While we can fairly say that Arsenal's additions were of a higher quality, the analysis left out is arguably more crucial.

Two questions:

Is the base team Utd have better or worse than Arsenal’s?
If Utd’s is better, were the additions made by AW sufficient to close the gap?

My answers to both questions will be No

Utd’s defence, particularly VDS, Rio and Vidic are far better than any at Arsenal - the improvements didn’t bring us even close to that level.

Berba and Rooney are far above any pairing at Arsenal. Giggs - with his technique, vision and title winning experience is an almost ‘unmatchable’ element that Utd had in its favour as well.

We might be at par in a few areas such as at RB, or on the wings (minus Giggs), and even ahead in central creative midfield (Cesc and co) but we are deficient in so many other areas.

Debo, As at last season I can say the man Utd team and Arsenal team were almost at par.

This season Man utd hardly had the luxury of playing Rio and Vidic, With Fabio, Rafael deputizing, Midfield, I see no reason why Arsenal shouldnt be better.

Attack: Ronney had a disaster of a campaign, while van persie had his best career season

Add that to the better signings. I am sure switching coaches Fergie would have gapped Arsene with over 15points

Before Chelsea adding players, they had already lost more than enough points already. No one would doubt that the signings gave them a glimmer of hope in a already dusasterous campaign.

If players addition dont necesarily win something then why are man City of 3yrs ago different from man City of today that just won the FA cup

Secondly I must make this comment - Arsenal fans have the ability to 'invent' excuses above all else.

When it is obvious to all and sundry that the playing staff isn’t good enough, Arsenal fans want to blame ‘mental strength’, and ‘change the No 2’ as the problems.

Did anyone at Liverpool ever say keep Benitez but sack the number 2 and things would improve? Did anyone ever say of Avram Grant’s Chelski that he should be given a psychologist to give them mental strength?

I’ve written a little (sarcasm ) on this thread, but I still believe the ‘issues’ lie in a few main groupings

1. Playing staff not good enough - I believe at least 80% of goners agree with this, the biggest bone of contention remains WHY the playing staff isn’t good enough.

Is it because:

a) Wenger is cheap and refuses to spend funds given him by the board but likes French players above all else?

b) Wenger is given funds by the board but he wastes it on giving ‘youth’ exorbitant deals and buying duds?

c) Wenger simply doesn’t have the funds and makes the best use (in his view) of the funds, but makes some mistakes (just like every other manager out there)

d) The board really isn’t interested in winning so they ration out funds that keep us ‘competitive’ (i.e in the top 4) but never enough to win the trophies.

e) The players are good enough in principle, Wenger’s inability to coach them is what makes them perform so badly.

I’d like to run a poll on this and let fans vote on their opinions - you can choose a maximum of two options each.

If the moderators can oblige with a poll that would be much appreciated.

I go with option E.

Wenger didnt win the league nor CL same with Ferguson.

Wenger beefed up his side with Kolscieny, Squilacci and Chamakh, Fergie added Chicharito, Smalling and Bebe.

12 months later Wenger who added much better and experienced players is once again trophyless, Fergie who signed players that would be considered huge risks. (1. never played in Europe 2.
