Health › Re: About Bird Flu and How to Protect Nigeria by dblock(m): 10:05am On Feb 03, 2007

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that the death of three Nigerians suspected to have resulted from avian flu could be attributed to other flu, not bird flu. “Samples taken from the affected people, so far, are yet to signal positive to avian flu,” the world health apex body said yesterday in Geneva, .

“Contacts have been followed up and have shown no symptoms at twice the incubation period for avian influenza infection. Samples have been tested from these contacts as well as from three other suspected cases, including one fatal case and have all been negative in preliminary tests.”

Apart from the health hazard the disease portends to Nigerians, it could also stifle the poultry sub-sector and the national economy of the much-needed investments both from domestic and foreign sources in the short to medium terms.

The world body said samples taken from another 11 people who came into contact with the three who died last week also tested negative to the deadly H5N1 avian influenza. It added that at preliminary level, all the samples tested negative to H5N1 strain of avian flu suspected to have been responsible for the death of the three people concerned.

The WHO report noted that it was too early to jump to any conclusion that the cases were fuelled by the deadly flu adding that only “preliminary tests on the samples from the 22-year-old were positive for influenza A/H5”, which is another type of flu.

The organisation said samples had now been sent to a WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza for confirmation adding that the results are expected shortly.

Lagos State government has taken steps to contain the spread of the avian bird virus should the human to human infection be confirmed by the world health body’s investigations.

Dr. Jide Idris, permanent secretary, ministry of health, said the state had started a massive mobilisation of marketers, farmers and health workers to contain its spread, adding that there is also separation of poultry from piggery farms to avoid infection.

Idris advised poultry farmers and marketers to improve on their bio-security measures such as protective clothing for workers on the farm, restrict movement of visitors within the poultry farm, ensure disinfection of farms, appliances, visitor’s shoes etc.

In a similar development, Dr. Abdulsalam Nasidi, director-general, Committee on Prevention of Bird Flu Human to Human Transmission, said samples from the three people who died and the 11 people who came in contact with them were still undergoing tests.

According to the Nigerian avian flu chief, the samples taken for test include one from a mother and daughter who died in Lagos and from a woman who also died in a remote place in Taraba state after suffering from flu-related symptoms.

“We are waiting for the results of the test from WHO which will show if it was normal common flu or bird flu,” Nasidi said.

Two people died in Lagos last week, and one in Taraba state. Health experts have said it takes average of a day or two to confirm through laboratory test on anyone with the dreaded flu which has claimed at least 163 lives since 2003. Though the flu has remained a case affecting birds alone, experts are jittery the flu could change into human to human transmissible form which could catapult a global pandemic killing millions of people.
