CultureRe: What Were Yorubas Called Before The 19th Century? by dblock(op): 9:09am On Mar 17, 2007
Teracotta, your post is very detailed and quite true but what are your thoughts on the actual question;  What Were Yorubas Called Before The 19th Century.

To tell you the truth I strongly believe that there must have being a common name, though it would probably not have been used as an everyday term. A term such as Awaloduwa or ifenwa might have being used. Yorubas lived in different villages/cities but they shared a common religion(at least that's what it says in the books), and they all believed that they were descendant from Oduduwa, hence they might have refered to themselves; "descendants of oduduwa" or something similar. Most of Nigeria history isn't preserved in regular historic books or scrolls but in songs, poems and stories. These stories are still being told today. I think the secret to unravelling the answer to this mystery is in stories. The evidence found would not be pragmatic, but it couldn't be overlooked wink

PoliticsGovernment Needs To Announce A State Of Emergency On Desertification & Lake Chad by dblock(op): 2:23pm On Mar 16, 2007
Government needs to announce a state of emergency on Desertification & Lake Chad

This is a very serious issue, and it should be on the Top of the agenda of the new administration. I have no doubt that the farmers, herders and fishers in Northern and North Eastern Nigeria will rather not have their fishing and Grazing sources depleted than have a stable power supply. The situation is very bad, the fact is that the sahara is moving southwards and it is englfing Nigeria

The government needs to;
* Educate people about the construction of Green belts
* Chanel rivers manually to strategic locations
* Ensure that the areas severly affected have enough water supply
* Ensure that the people of those areas have a proper diet and their diet is not affected by desertification
* Chanel a river to Lake Chad to act as major water source
* Commence on Majr irrigation projects
* Plant more trees to enjance local transpiration
* Advice farmers and educate them about proper ways to grow crops
* Supply large amounts of fertilizer
* Teach about the consequences of Over grazing and using primitive farming techniques
* commence on interleaving large amounts of Leguminous plants in the soil which will extract Nitrogen from the air and fix it into the soil thus making the soil more fertile and less subjected to desertification
* Teach about proper crop roation and purchase Solar Ovens

Lake Chad cry cry cry

Fishermen used to catch large fish in the lake but they only catch little fish now cry cry cry
Lake Chad is drying up.

The size of Lake Chad has increased and shrunk at regular intervals. Increasing aridity in the Sahel area and more demand for freshwater for irrigation may however entail that Lake Chad will continue shrinking. Lake Chad varies in extent between the rainy and dry seasons, from 50,000 to 20,000 km2. Precise boundaries have been established between Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger. Sectors of the boundaries that are located in the rivers that drain into Lake Chad have never been determined, and several complications are caused by flooding and the appearance or submergence of islands. A similar process on the Kovango River between Botswana and Namibia led to a military confrontation between the two states.

Climate change exacerbates the drying up of already arid zones in Africa. Vorosmarty and Moore (1991) have documented the potential impacts of impoundment, land-use change, and climatic change on the Zambezi and found that they can be substantial. Cambula (1999) has shown a decrease in surface and subsurface runoff of five streams in Mozambique, including the Zambezi, under various climate change scenarios. For the Zambezi basin, simulated runoff under climate change is projected to decrease by about 40% or more.Growing water scarcity, increasing population, degradation of shared freshwater ecosystems, and competing demands for shrinking natural resources distributed over such a huge area involving so many countries have the potential for creating bilateral and multilateral conflicts (Gleick, 1992).
This is very seroius people are being directly affected by the above developments. Nigeria must not wait until it is a crisis before they act, Nigeria must act now and prevent an Humanitarian crisis sad

Obasnajo did what obasnajo did, I am not on Drugs because I don't eant my country to go to Hell. OBJ ruined Naija but Atiku will take it one step further and turn it to Hell, that is why I am aginst Atiku, Justice or Injustice. I am willing to give my life to ensure that Atiku gets nowhere close to Aso Rock.

OBJ took some money but Atiku will take the whole foreign reserve plus the excess funds, thus instantly making him the world's richest man instantly.

If drugs makes me realise that Atiku is a bastard, then drugs I will smoke

TravelRe: Why Are Some Nigerians Abroad Scared Of Going Back Home? by dblock(m): 7:39am On Mar 16, 2007
The Nigeria curriculum is definitely more difficult than that of most countries, that includes America.
The reason why Nigerian students aren't excelling as much is due to the lack of credibility of our universities and the fact that a lot of our students are strangely reluctant to partake in more serious and productive industries like Business and Technology etc. instead a lot of people are lingering with less economically productive subjects like Poetry huh huh huh huh huh. and there are too many people in the medical field.

It involves research, class participation, internships
This does not take into account, the standards that are required to pass a class, and this is paramount!!!!!

But things are changing
(1)The University of Technolgy in Abuja (AIST) is under cosntruction, and when completed will be world class and as good as any other universiy of it's kind anywhere in the world
(2) The Akwa Ibom University of Tecknology
(3) Buisness is being taking more seriously and SMEs are to be encouraged and subsidized by the government
(4) Our makor ploytechnics are to be merged with universities, thus making equipement and facilities avaulable for exchange and support.
(5) The university of Yobe has improved immensely with the construction of four new buildings
(6) The university of Ibadan, Lagos and Ife are still substandard compared to other niversities worldwide but I know that things can only get better.

PS, You can cruise through education abroad, but it takes brains to excell in Nigeria
