PoliticsLeadership & The Tongue – A Case Of David Cameron by DeanSim(op): 11:04pm On May 11, 2016

The Tongue – A Small Member

The tongue is one of the very small members of the body, but there is no doubt that it can very destructive, in fact, more destructive than constructive. That is why extreme care is needed. This is particularly important when people in authority are at the receiving end. Let me buttress this with a short story. One that is so dear to my heart because of its many lessons that we can apply today.

A mighty king was sitting on his roof chamber when he caught sight of a beautiful woman taking her bathe. He did not do the right thing of taking his eyes and mind away from the scene. Eventually he had illicit sexual relations with her, and in order to cover up his deeds, as the woman eventually got pregnant, the king arranged for her husband to be executed. That king was David of Israel. The woman was Bathsheba, wife of Uriah. (Coincidentally, this story revolves around David Cameron)

A seer, Nathan was sent to put King David’s wrongdoings before him. Considering the weight of the message he bore, and the gravity of what the king had done, Nathan would probably have done nothing wrong if he had spoken bluntly to the king, from the start. No, he did not. He started by narrating a story about a rich man and a poor man.

“There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor. “The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds. But the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb which he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup and lay in his bosom; and it was like a daughter to him. And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him; but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”

With wisdom and courage, Nathan used a story to get the message through to King David. How do we know that he actually got through to David? Read David’s response.

So David’s anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to Nathan, … the man who has done this shall surely die! And he shall restore fourfold for the lamb, because he did this thing and because he had no pity.”

King David’s sense of justice was awakened, and even though Nathan did not ask for his judgment, he passed judgment, and condemned the man in the story, consequently condemning himself, because Nathan told him that he was that man he condemned. Powerful use of the tongue, in wisdom and with courage! Nathan didn’t have to struggle, or to explain himself for the wrong use of his tongue in delivering the right message.

Now David Cameron

Mr. Cameron was caught on camera describing Nigeria and Afghanistan as being amongst the most corrupt countries in the world, while speaking to the British Queen, Elizabeth II, ahead an anti-corruption summit taking place in London on Tuesday, May 10, 2016.

Is the substance of the utterance completely wrong?

Was Prime Minister David Cameron totally wrong in what he said? I do not think so. Both leaders of both countries in question have in the past expressly stated that there are high levels of corruption in their individual countries, and they both vowed to turn things around. Here in Nigeria, the ordinary Nigerian feels the excruciating pain of corrupt practices. Let’s not devour the messenger, while neglecting the import of the message

Where could the Prime Minister have done better?

In my opinion, he could have been more careful, and considerate of people’s feelings, vis-à-vis the impact of his utterance. Something tells me, he never meant this to go out, as he probably did not know that the camera was rolling. He should have been a little more tactful. He forgot to mention that these countries in question are taking steps to improve.

Lessons

1. A beautiful admonition could be thrown completely away, if the tongue of the giver is not masterfully tamed.

2. Especially when you have to give developmental feedback, be sure to commend the receiver first. Show appreciation for efforts made, before respectfully pointing out areas of improvement.

3. Some damage caused with the tongue, could be irreparable. I doubt if Nigerians will ever forget this. I pray we do not dwell on it, Just as the President has moved on.

4. Be careful not to stick to hard to a person’s past, without paying attention to recent efforts to improve. it could be really damaging both to you and the person.

5. Nobody likes to be mindlessly reminded of how far backward he/she is. we all like to be lifted.

Conclusion

I hope Mr. David Cameron has learned his lessons. I believe in the ocean of criticisms, we have also learned something about the tongue. Anyone can falter anytime in the use of the tongue.

Let’s be guided!

how will govt help them? will govt be there when they are doing the thing in their househuh grin grin
Then, they should continue to cause more problems and nuisance to our society. They can learn from dev countries.
I am suggesting govt should assume and accept this as a problem. There is limit to what civil society and ngos can do. There can improve on their welfare, social care and foster care.
The late Steve Jobs is great example here.
It can be better than this and we can do it.

CrimeRe: Fulani Herdsmen Attack: Igbo Should Be Patient, Peaceful —FG by DeanSim: 7:55am On May 03, 2016
Buhari should go after their arrest. People are committing and getting away with it.

The same people will do it again. Problems like this should hasten us to start gathering comprehensive data that will crime and seeking other solutions.

A lot of Nigerians don't have the national identity card, meaning anybody can claim to be citizen, they commit crime and no single way to profile the perpetrators.

The govt and crime fighters are in the dark and they keep remaining in the dark.

Is high times FG takes security of human lives seriously because all their available strategies keep failing and they keep repeating it.

PoliticsRe: What Will Ever Make Nigerians Protest by DeanSim: 1:35am On Apr 08, 2016
I weep wholeheartedly for this country which we don't seems to cherish dearly. Our number 1 enemy is disunity. It might seems stupid or negative but let's be realistic. Our hearts are not one sincerely.

Another problem is the poverty stricken mentality among majority of us. It saddens me that we are so immune to darkness, poor pipe borne water, lack of shelter, low-quality education and bad infrastructures.

I guess, we lack metrics for development. We don't objectively have a platform where we can analyze phenomena whether there is progression or otherwise. Do we have data or have the culture of collecting and maintaining one.

That Occupy Nigeria will forever be memorable to me. Some fellow youth died for that cause and what happen? What's the result? It doesn't worth it.

Since I was born, almost every homes have been providing their own stable facilities to survive. It is getting worse and becoming a culture.
I have concluded that, I will contribute only my part with wisdom to further make this country a better place for us to live and take strategy careful steps to influence the government where possible and promote good governance.
Our political system and governance is below average.

They have to show us there capability, by never experiencing re-occuring fuel shortages like the last administration and many other previous administration.

SportsRe: The True Problem With The National Team by DeanSim: 5:39pm On Mar 30, 2016
chrisooblog:
true the bottom line is our administrators have been the bane of our poor performances but the true root of the matter is if government is really ready to allow football run itself. a situation where government subvention is responsible for 90% of your running cost is not good for transparency and proper planning. that's why someone can wakeup and say go play in kaduna or pick this sponsor that sponsor. as poor as the nff leadership is removing them is not the ultimate solution. yes i agree pinnick must go but who replaces him? poliadministrators just like him who got to leadership positions not so much by expertise but whose a**e they happened to be kissing. one thing you must know is that the current system is rigged to keep out genuine people like segun odegbami, colin udoh, you, me etc who care about the game. look at the state FAs whose members will likely produce the next nff leadership how many are competent honest football people? who can barely run clubs properly owing players left and right. so people it's not that straight forward to solve. if i were buhari i would instruct the sports minister to liase with all football stakeholders to fashion out a way for gradual government (both federal and state) withdrawal from football administration. reduce funding while encouraging corporate involvement through transparency and little incentives here and there also withdraw sport ministry employees from the various FAs and allow them hire competent people based on performance not on man know man or ''federal character''. look at how well the LMC that is controlling the NPFL is being run because of the absence of government interference. so all these issues of foreign or local coach, salary no salary, bonuses, logistics you name it will continue to be problematic as long as government is deeply involved in football and sports in general.

going forward i also support hiring a foreign coach on the short term but one has to be pragmatic do we have the money? plus can the ''oyinbo'' work in our chaotic system? if the answer is no please they should leave siasia to do his work
Your thought is rich

PoliticsRe: Nairalanders Rate Buhari's Performance by DeanSim: 12:10pm On Mar 12, 2016
dazdilijae:
Boko haram was a northern conspiracy to distract the GEJ administration and was definitely going to reduce when the took over power( a fight on Boko haram is a fight on the north) Te so called TSA was initiated in 2013 and had over 100 Fed agencies on the pilot phase in 2015 GEJ ordered the remaining agencies to key in only to e voted out thus the continuation. so if this is why you say he is performivg well then please rethink.
On import dependence nothing has changed as every thing is still een imported jus that the cost has shifted to the common man to pay the charges as they are not produced locally

On my part i believe the administration is lacking in focus as every minister wants to prove himself rather than working as a team thurs making the govt look incoherent ut they do ve things to offer
The fight against corruption although looks selective at the momemt is good as you cant fight your house first cos when you go outside who would help you fight the enemy? More corrupt heads should roll even if its jus the opposition for now in that way the ones ruling also know their day of recorning would come
if the restructuring of the pulic service continues then we are on the right path
in all i say 5/10 for now
Northern conspiracy: And GEJ couldn't achieve these feats Buhari have achieve so far. Excuse! He said boko haram has infiltrated into his cabinet and he couldn't do much but dwell in his hypocrisy. Now you can correlate dasukigate and other corruption acts within the defence department under GEJ to boko haram menace.

On TSA: In my opinion, I felt it is being implemented under Buhari. We know how lack of policy implementation is one of the many bad acts of our govt. Some university don are tired of writing and dishing out solutions that the govt will never implement. For Buhari to have continue with such an idea from GEJ administration and strictly implement it is worth applause.
Besides, I and majority of Nigerians never heard of a policy tag TSA under GEJ, but Buhari made it known and Nigerians gladly welcome it.
