Politics › Edo Crisis: APC Leaders Give Condition To Back Obaseki For Second Term by deantimes(op): 2:02pm On Oct 14, 2019 |
Leaders of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has given a condition that must be met before they will back Godwin Obaseki, Edo State governor, to secure another term in office.
The political crisis bedeviling the state started at the inaugural sitting of the present State House of Assembly. The governor had issued proclamation for the formation of the legislative arm and some members, said to be loyal to Adams Oshiomhole, the national chairman of the ruling party, were absent at the time.
Unconfirmed reports said the formation of the house was done at odd hours, this has not been verified by TODAY POLITICS. Those at the helms of affairs are said to be loyal to the governor who is at loggerheads with Oshiomhole, his predecessor.
The members who were absent, backed by the former governor, are demanding a fresh proclamation which the governor has refused to re-issue even after the National Assembly urged him to do so.
Ward leaders of the party numbering 11 from Owan West Local Government Area has reportedly told the governor to bury the thought of a second term in office if he refuses to issue another proclamation for the fresh composition of the State House of Assembly.
“Until the governor issues a fresh proclamation, no second term deal,” Punch Newspaper quoted one Raymond Osumah, coordinating ward 3, as speaking on behalf of his colleagues.
“It is even a shame for the governor to have instructed the council chairman to stop the N15,000 stipends being given to ward chairmen because we are not supporting his second term bid. And Frank Ilaboya, our council chairman, is owning the eleven ward chairmen three months which amounted to N495,000. They can eat the money but we stand with Oshiomhole,” Osumah added.
The leaders denied endorsing the governor for another term in office and accused him of attempting to whittle down the political influence of Oshiomhole in the state.
“We want to make it clear that, nothing like that happened. Frank Ilaboya, the council chairman who said it, is being mischievous.
“What we are demanding from Mr Governor is to obey the directives of the National Working Committee of the APC and the National Assembly,” the spokesman said. Source: https://todaypoliticsng.com/edo-crisis-apc-leaders-give-condition-to-back-obaseki-for-second-term/ |

Workers in the country has been directed to get ready for an indefinite industrial action expected to begin October 16.
The directive is from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the umbrella body of the work force.

Politics › 2023 Presidency: North Will Not Relinquish Power To South - Northern Elders Foru by deantimes(op): 1:29pm On Oct 12, 2019*. Modified: 1:49pm On Oct 12, 2019 |
The North is not prepared to relinquish power to the South in the next general election, Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has said.
Ango Abdullahi, chairman of the NEF made this known in an interview he granted Sun Newspaper.
With the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, which began in 2015, winding down in 2023, speculations are rife that there will be a power shift to the Southern part of the country.
Some persons from Southern regions, considered influential in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), are said to be clamouring for the return of power to the South based on zoning or otherwise known as power rotation which is not known to the party or the Nigerian Constitution.
Their Northern counterparts in the ruling party are not buying the idea which has forced Nasir El-rufai, governor of Kaduna State to openly call for the scrapping of zoning formula on power shift.
While it held sway from 1999 upto 2015 when the ruling party snatched power from it, the now opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) usually choosed its presidential candidates from the two protectorates in the country.
For the NEF chairman, the Northern region will not relinquish power in the next general election and has the numeric strength which is needed in a democracy to hold on to power for as long as it wants.
He said there is nothing wrong if the protectorate decides to keep power for the next 100 years.
“I think there is nothing wrong at all if the north keeps power for century because democracy is all about numbers and we have it. You see, the North is the most liberal voting block in Nigerian political history,” Mr Abdullahi said.
“It is also important to remind ourselves whenever you are talking about power shift between the South and the North that, it was only PDP that had a power shift agreement; it is not in the Constitution of the country,” he added. Ibrahim Mohammed, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has warned against disobedience to lawful orders of courts in the country.
Mr Mohammed who gave the warning on Friday at the launching of the 9th House of Representatives Legislative Agenda, in Abuja said flouting of court orders will attract grave consequences.
The top jurist, represented by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, also said vowed that justice must be served without fear or favour.
“I will like to assure you that as you embark on this important voyage of national rebirth and reinvigoration through effective, people-oriented legislation, the judiciary is solidly behind you,” the CJN said at the gathering.
“Since our role is strictly limited to the interpretation of the laws of the land, we will not leave any stone unturned in that respect. You can rest assured that you already have a good and dependable ally in the Nigerian judiciary.
“We will on our part, as usual, vigorously pursue the observance of the rule of law by all citizens. There is no sacred cow anywhere, as no one is above the law, no matter his or her position in the society.
“Justice must be served without fear or favour. Every law of the land must be obeyed. Let me assure everyone present here that the consequences of disobeying lawful court orders will be too grave to bear.
“We all should gird our loins to do our constitutionally assigned duties with due diligence so that Nigeria can be the pride of everyone,” he added.
The warning comes amidst criticism against the federal government that has continued to detain some Nigerians freed by the courts.
Prominent among those being held by the government despite court orders for their release are: Sambo Dasuki, former National Security Adviser (NSA) and Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, among several other Nigerians. Hate speech fine: Remember you won’t be in power forever – Apostle Suleman tells Buhari, othersJohnson Suleman, the general overseer of Omega Fire Ministries, has reacted to the recent move by the federal government to increase the fine for defaulters spewing hate speech.
Information Minister, Lai Mohammed was recently quoted by TheCable as saying President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the upward review of fine for hate speech from N500,000 to N5,000,000.
Mr Mohammed was said to have stated this while inaugurating a committee with the sole aim of initiating reforms and legislative actions to regulate the online media.
Some Nigerians, including the cleric, has reacted to the decision, claiming it aimed at silencing opposition voices.
For the helmsman of the Christian assembly, the fine should be backdated to 2014 when the now ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) was in the opposing camp.
Their argument is that the present administration rode to power through hate speech thrown at the then ruling but now opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“Just read about N5m fine for hate speech…there is a thin line btw freedom of speech/hate speech..this is a deliberate attempt to silence people..we could back date its implementation to 2014,” Mr Suleman said in series of tweets on Friday.
“What they should be against is unverified news..fake news been peddled..not ‘speech’..this is quiet draconian and ill-timed..by stopping fake news, the media will be sanitised..but with this, every voiced opinion seen as confrontational will be tagged ‘hate speech’.
While warning leaders about power being transient, the cleric suggested that spreading false information should be looked into rather than silent dissent voices.
“What should be addressed is fake news..lies been peddled.unverified stories..that way, there will be media-sanity..but with this, every voiced opinion that appears confrontational to govt will be tagged ‘hate speech’…leaders, always remember you won’t be in power forever,” he added. Shehu Sani, a former Senator has lashed out at President Muhammadu Buhari over the latter’s accusation against assessment of some foreign bodies.
Mr Buhari while playing host to his Economic Advisory Council (ECA) accused World Bank, International Monetary Fund and other international groups of publishing inaccurate statistics about the country.
One of the damning statistics is that of World Bank Poverty Clock which opined that the acclaimed giant of Africa is the headquarters of poverty in the world.
The submission did not go down well with the administration of President Buhari which rejected and continues to kick against statistics of both foreign and local bodies.
The government which prides itself as seriously fighting corruption also kicked against the report of Transparency International which said the country is now more corrupt under Buhari than it was during previous administrations.
It has also rejected the submission of Amnesty International that the All Progressive Congress led administration has severally trampled and violated human rights in the country.

Mr Buhari played host to the ECA when the members of the council visited him at the presidential villa in Abuja.
The body was constituted last month with the mandate to advise the president on matters relating to the economy.
After the gathering, the president accused the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund of publishing inaccurate statistical data about the country.
Buhari also said he has mandated his economic advisory team with the new task of having proper statistics gathering mechanisms.
Both the World Bank and the IMF have in recent times lamented the debt profile of Nigeria in relation to GDP.
The World Poverty Clock also described Nigeria as the World Poverty Capital, a designation rejected by the Buhari administration.
The statistics regarding the high unemployment rate and poverty released by the National Bureau of Statistics which is a government agency, have also been rejected by the Buhari administration.

A Senator belonging to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari might soon be toppled.
Mr Buhari had on Tuesday presented the appropriation bill for next year to the joint session of the National Assembly.
Mr Buhari who proposed a N10.33 trillion budget tagged the financial document that of “fiscal consolidation to strengthen our macroeconomic environment; investing in critical infrastructure, human capital development and enabling institutions, especially in key job creating sectors.”
One assumption of the budget is that Nigeria will use nearly a quarter of the budget (N2.5 trillion) to repay debts the government owes locally and internationally.
The budget was also prepared on the assumption of $57 per barrel with crude oil production of 2.18 million barrels per day.
At the debate of the bill which began Wednesday, Senator Enyinnanya Abaribe, representing Abia South senatorial district, said the executive has failed and there is need for it to be taken over and the economic policies of the present administration redirected.
“I want to suggest a name to those who wrote this speech for the president that this is nothing but a budget of taxation,” Abaribe said before being interrupted by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who cautioned him to stop the attack.
“I just want to appeal to you to talk to what was read in the budget speech,” the top lawmaker advised his colleague.
Continuing from where he stopped the Abia lawmaker who is the Minority leader of the upper legislative chamber, re-emphasised the proposed name he gave to the budget and described it as unsustainable.
“This is a budget that is based on taxation. Its is based on 7.5 per cent increase in VAT, based on several other increases,” he said querying, “How would you talk about job creation when you do not invest in what will create jobs? Debt servicing as a component is higher than capital expenditure. Two trillion for capital expenditure, 2.4trn for debt servicing.
Abaribe added that it is time for the red chamber to take over from the executive whom he said have failed. He also pleaded with his colleagues to look at facts before accepting the bill.
“The projected growth that they put in the budget was 1.9 per cent, less than the population growth of 2.6 per cent. So, if we look at it globally, we are still struggling. We may have to take over and direct the economic policy of this government. having seen that they have not done anything and they have failed.
“I know that you have promised the executive that we are going to work very well with the executive to produce the budget but I plead with my colleagues to look at the facts. You cannot run away from facts.
“The facts say this is not a sustainable budget. The facts say that if we need to change, we must be able to look at the critical fundamentals of this budget speech and make adjustments as due,” he added. Politics › Why Obasanjo Is Not A Democrat – Presidency by deantimes(op): 8:39am On Jul 22, 2019 |
The Nigerian Presidency has said former president, Olusegun Obasanjo is not a democrat.
Mr Obasanjo who democratically governed the country for eight years,in his latest epistle, cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari on the need for a drastic action on insecurity if the nation must remain a united one.
He also called for a gathering of various ethnic groups in the country for deliberations on how to live peacefully with one another. The report of a similar one convened during the administration of Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has been dumped in a trash can by his successor. Mr Jonathan blamed lack of time for failing to implement the report of the 2014 conference after he lost his re-election bid in 2015.
But weighing in into the matter on Sunday, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman described the former president as non-democrat, saying those aggrieved with the present structure of the nation should approach the National Assembly, a position reiterated by herdsmen accused as arrowheads of insecurity nationwide.
“To call for a national conference when there is a sitting Parliament in place, whoever is making that call is not a democrat,” Mr Shehu said when he featured on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
The presidential spokesman also said the government in which he serves is on top of the security situation in the country.
He refuted insinuations in some quarters that the nation’s security apparatus has collapsed despite the unabated insecurity which saw 72 people killed while 32 were kidnapped last week.
“We are in total disagreement with the assumptions of collapse of security in the country,” he said.
“Security challenges have been present before the present administration came to office. We have met our own challenges and we are dealing with them as decisive as we can.
“The Government is on top of the security situation in the country because we have calmed down North Central and Niger Delta, the presidential spokesman added. Source: https://todaypoliticsng.com/why-obasanjo-is-not-a-democrat-presidency/
