Senate Summons Service Chiefs over Gruesome Herdsmen Attacks

The Senate on Thursday summoned the service chiefs to appear before it and explain why persistent attacks on innocent Nigerians by Fulani herdsmen have continued unchecked.



The upper chamber which suspected that the dastardly acts were being perpetrated by fleeing members of Boko Haram terrorist group, asked the service chiefs to appear and brief it on measures they are putting in place to forestall the spread of terrorist activities all over the country.

The National Assembly also constituted an ad-hoc committee chaired by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, to organise a public hearing on the rampaging attacks on innocent Nigerians by Fulani herdsmen and come up with recommendations capable of tackling the crisis.

The committee was asked to commence its assignment next week.
The resolution was the aftermath of a motion moved by Senator Chukwuka Utazi (Enugu North) during which he lamented the killing of scores of residents of Ukpabi Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State last Monday.

The Senate which also observed a minute silence in honour of those killed in Nimbo community, asked the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to urgently dispatch relief materials to the affected community as well as neighbouring Nkpologu, Uvuru, Ugbene-Ajima and Adani communities to alleviate the plights of persons displaced by the attack.

It also called on security agencies of the nation to improve its intelligence gathering and be proactive instead of merely reacting to threats to internal security especially in cases where there is credible intelligence to act upon with a view to safeguarding lives and property.

The senators also asked security agencies to enforce laws on arms’ possession against unathorised persons just as they appealed to the Nigerian Police to expedite action on the establishment of a rapid response police unit around the communities where there have been attacks.

Utazi told his colleagues that the herdsmen entered into the community through Enugu State border with Kogi State shooting, hacking, matcheting, slitting the throats of hapless residents and razing down buildings.

He said contrary to reports that 20 people were killed in the incident, 38 persons were actually killed while no fewer than 100 others sustained varying degrees of injury.
The senator added that domestic animals were slaughtered while efforts were still being made to recover corpses of victims and as well account for those missing.

Utazi noted that only three months ago, Abbi, a neighbouring community to Nimbo was attacked by Fulani herdsmen whom he said killed scores of people and houses and barns set ablaze. He noted that Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area now faces extinction as a result of protracted attacks on communities in the council area.

Utazi lamented that whereas intelligence meant to avert the attack was passed on to security agencies ahead of the act, they failed to act on it adding that residents of neighbouring communities now live in fear.

In his contribution, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (Bayelsa East) described the herdsmen as the worst group of terrorists who have been maiming, killing, stealing and raping women in the country.
According to Murray-Bruce, it was gruesome acts like this which precipitated the 1967-1970 civil war, pointing out that the situation had started resulting in reprisal attacks which he said would end up in a guerilla warfare, the battle he said could not be won by anyone.

He challenged the federal government to disarm cattle rearers, noting that the herdsmen were not licensed to carry arms. He also warned that if the situation was not quickly nipped in the bud, religious and ethnic colouration would be read into it, a situation he said would result in civil war.

While the Chief Whip, Senator Sola Adeyeye, said the killers should no longer be termed herdsmen but terrorists, Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, echoed Murray-Bruce that the last civil war started this way, observing that Nigeria would not survive a second civil war.

While disagreeing with Murray-Bruce that reprisals have started, Akpabio said with Nigeria’s population of 170 million, the entire African continent would be unable to contain Nigerians whom he said would be scattered across Africa if another civil war breaks out.

In his remark, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the session, emphasised the need for the Senate to act fast before frustrated Nigerians are forced to take laws into their hands.

“We must show some sensitivity on matters concerning our people. There are too many men and women in Nigeria today who are frustrated by economic realities and they will make themselves available for any possible mishap that this will give rise to. I believe that the earlier we nip this in the bud, the better for all of us.

“We want a very peaceful country and we will need to work towards that. And as leaders, we must be held responsible if there is breakdown of law and order because the primary purpose of government is the protection of lives and properties of the ordinary people. We must be able to come up with immediate approach to this problem, mid-term and long-term solutions so that people will see that we are interested in their welfare,” he said.

Apologies to Governor of Enugu state.

There was a call made by Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to the president, he was put on hold for over an hour 15 minutes.

This call was made in the presence of 13 men and 4 women, the president aid told the Governor that the president will get back to him. The president through his aid after 4 hrs told Enugu state governor that the president will do something about it.

My relative was among the people who witness this call. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on hearing that the police have not arrived at Uzouwani called GOC 82 division for help. He was refereed to the presidency again.

This time around, he was put on hold for nearly 2 hrs again, while waiting to speak to the president. News came in that the attack he was planning to prevent has actually taken place.

Within an hour, the commissioner and GOC who refereed the Governor to the president has mobilised their men to stop retaliation. The same way Lagos and Agatu was attacked and retaliation prevented.

I want to use this medium to apologise to the Governor of Enugu state, but I would like him to demand probe/investigation on this massacre. I will know he has learnt his lessons, if not he is still a cretin we will have for only four years.

We need to know why police commissioner and GOC need presidency order before they can protect the innocent citizens?.
We need to know - why police and military sent their men to Uzouwani after the attack to prevent retaliation?.
We need to know why a sitting Governor cannot use the support of police and military to protect his people?.

My governor, I am just apologising because l taught you did nothing at all, but as a man " what was your PLAN B?, if presidency fail to help. You would have use the media which is FREE.

THE LIMIT OF SUICIDAL SILENCE.

I have been watching keenly on social media since the breaking of the tragic news of Enugu massacre by Boko Haram terrorists, and I have noticed that once again my people (South-South) don't seems to be bothered by the Enugu tragedy, rather they are busy updating PDP marmot crowd in Jigawa while Enugu that is at their backyard is burning. Only few of us took out time to condemn it and showed solidarity to our siblings in the East.

This is very bad, it portrays myopia and shallow mindedness, it shows gross insensitivity and selfishness. This kind of trend would definitely destroy us.

I don't need to engage in frivolous sycophantic pro PDP updates just to impress anybody and to make them notice that I am supporting PDP because, the whole world is aware that I am fearlessly PDP body and soul. I am even more PDP than most of the highly placed PDP stalwarts because they have been jumping in and out of the party like frogs while I am still here like a relic. But no matter my strong love and support for the party, I cannot place its interest before the interest of my region, people or religious faith. I see no reason why I should be dancing atilogu dance over Jigawa PDP rally while Enugu is burning courtesy Hausa-Fulani Islamic terrorists.

I am not from Enugu but Rivers State, I am not from Igbo but Ogoni, but the problem of Enugu people should be my problem because we are one.

This not the first time my people are doing this, just recently DSS exhibited Buhari's hatred, disdain and disgust for Igbos by accusing IPOB of killing 5 Fulanis without any proof. There was wide spread condemnation over the wicked ploy of DSS to incite the Hausa-Fulanis, but such condemnation did not come from South-South because, most us don't want to be labeled Biafrans, some of us saw it as problems of the Igbos and not ours.

Igbos don't see things like that when it comes things that affect us, they are always sticking out their necks for us. They fully supported us during the election petition tussle involving the governors of Rivers State and Akwa Ibom State, and when we secured victory they celebrated with us. They condemned the cancelation of Maritime University that was billed for Delta State. They condemned military invasion of Ogoni land that led to the killing of over 30 Innocent civilians. They supported us during the rerun elections in Akwa Ibom and Rivers. They also condemned the cancelation of the Calabar/Lagos railway project. Not forgetting the overwhelming love and support they showered on GEJ which they are still paying the price till date.

Then why can't we show these people some love? Standing with your people in the East does not make you a Biafran if that is your fear. This is not about Biafra or Nigeria, this about uniting for survival because the enemies have marked us for destruction. It is South-East today but we could be next.

Ogoniland has being a volatile land since immemorial starting from the days of activist Ken Saro wiwa and the fight between Ogoniland and andoni people.

Phytochemicals for protecting against cancer: evidence from clinical studies

Evidence for a benefit before cancer
Although not all, many studies have linked a higher intake of phytochemical-rich foods, such as vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, herbs and spices, with a lower incidence of cancer as highlighted in the latest comprehensive review from the World Cancer Research Fund and other systemic reviews1,2.


More specifically, certain elements of food have been addressed within a number of cohort studies:

Carotenoids, found in leafy green vegetables and carrots, have been linked broccoli
with a lower risk of breast cancer in a recent meta-analysis3 and a lower risk of ovarian cancer4,5,6.
Higher intake of cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, radishes and broccoli, have been associated with a lower prostate cancer risk7, as have foods rich in isoflavones, such as pulses and soy products8, and lycopene-rich colourful fruits and tomatoes9.
Foods with abundant levels of flavonoids, such as onions, rich in quercetin, have been shown to reduce the incidence of numerous cancers, particularly those arising from the lung among smokers10, 11.
The anthoxanthins in dark chocolate have been reported to lower the risk of colon cancer12 and higher green tea intake lowers the risk of breast, prostate, ovarian and oesophageal cancers, particularly among smokers and alcoholics13,14.
Coffee consumption has been shown to reduce the risk of non-melanomatous skin cancers and melanoma, even after removing other factors such as ultraviolet radiation exposure, body mass index, age, sex, physical activity, alcohol intake and smoking history15,16.
Evidence for a benefit after cancer
The benefits of healthy foods do not stop after a diagnosis, especially if combined with other healthy lifestyle habits:

Breast cancer survivors who regularly consumed more than thevegetables government-recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day had a third lower breast cancer recurrence risk if combined with regular physical activity17.
In another study, women with breast cancer who had the highest serum lignan levels, reflecting good intake of legumes, cereals, cruciferous vegetables and soya, were reported to have the lowest risk of death18. Likewise, a lignin- and polyphenol-rich diet was associated with a lower colorectal cancer relapse rate19.
The large Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study demonstrated that women with the highest intake of the phytoestrogenic polyphenols isoflavones and flavanone, found in soya and other beans, had a 29% lower risk of relapse and death20. Similar findings were seen for green tea after breast21 and colorectal cancer19. Green tea also decreased the abnormal white cell count in 30% of patients with chronic leukaemia and reduced the levels of several markers of proliferation, as well as serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in men with prostate cancer22. A slowing of PSA progression has similarly been observed in other dietary studies, most notably in the randomised trial involving a plant-based diet together with other lifestyle changes23 and a phase II study of pomegranate juice24.
Another cancer influenced by nutrition is skin cancer, as highlighted by a study of individuals who have been treated for basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, and who have a high risk of further lesions due to their on-going solar damage. Those who consumed the highest levels of lutein- and zeaxanthin-rich foods, such as leafy green vegetables, had the lowest levels of new cancer formation25.
A number of other studies evaluating the impact of phytochemicals are underway, the largest and probably most comprehensive is the UK’s DietCompLyf prospective trial involving 3,159 women treated for breast cancer26.
