Not state acceptability, state creation. It was a strategy to unite the Christ followers with the Roman population that was into polytheism then. They added their holidays, Christmas and Easter as part of the Christian culture, for general acceptance. When Christ died they were his followers who were doing things seen as sorcery to the Roman authorities, hence they decided to create a generally acceptable Christian religion, watered down.
