I can talk about another country, our own dey ground.

You know there are things you can learn from other countries. This wouldn't have happened in Nigeria. We haven't even gotten to the stage where anybody can contemplate a 'motion of vote of no confidence.' against a President. This is the 8th time Zuma has been subjected to such a vote. It's important we follow what happens in other climes in terms of maturity of democracy and see what we can learn.

Foreign Affairs / President Zuma Survives 'motion Of No Confidence Vote' for the 8th time by Deeldorado: 5:55pm On Aug 08, 2017
President Zuma has survived a motion of no confidence vote in parliament. President Zuma won the vote by 198-177 allowing him to remain President. There were 9 abstentions.

ANC MPs were singing and dancing in Parliament after the votes were announced.

This is the 8th time President Zuma would survive a motion of no confidence vote.

Members of the South Africa's parliament cast their votes on a motion of no confidence vote on President Jacob Zuma. The case for a no confidence vote was championed mainly by opposition party MPs over corruption allegations against the President while Jacob Zuma banked on ANC MPs to survive the 'vote of no confidence motion.' This will be the 8th attempt to oust President Zuma from the presidency but he has survived the previous attempts. This time around, however, the voting was by a secret ballot which may have allowed some ANC MPs vote against the President. But Zuma still survived at the end of the day.

If the motion of vote of no confidence had succeeded, the speaker of Parliament would have assumed the position of Acting President.

As a keen follower of SA politics, and having watched it live, this is my own citizen report.

Politics / We Begged Audu Ogbeh To Join Buhari Administration – Osinbajo by Deeldorado: 3:53am On Aug 08, 2017
The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday revealed that the Muhammadu Buhari administration begged Agriculture Minister, Audu Ogbeh, to join the government.

Mr. Osinbajo made this remark at the Nigerian Initiative for Economic Development held at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja.

The acting president, while unveiling the potentials in the Nigerian economy, said apart from power and other economic investment areas, there is huge investment potential in the Nigerian Agricultural sector.

He, however, jocularly said Mr. Ogbe, was literally begged to join the government, adding that he was enjoying the wealth made from his agriculture investment.

“You heard the Minister of Agriculture talking about agriculture and the sad poem. By the way, I took the poem from him. This is a poem about how miserable it was at the time. Let me assure you that Chief Audu Ogbeh became very wealthy in the farming business,” he said.

“We literarily had to beg him to come into government because he seemed to be enjoying his wealth a little too much. But the truth of the matter is that the agric sector is a massive, massive sector.

“There was a Mexican who came to Nigeria; he is one of the big banana farmers, banana and pineapple farmers, and he is still in Nigeria. He is in eleven states now. He came in on the invitation of some Nigerians who wanted to export bananas.

“They wanted him to come in here, grow banana and export them. But what happened? After a while, they found that he wasn’t interested in exporting anything at all. When they asked him why, he said: “Look, I’m selling this stuff here. I’m making more money here than exporting it. Every one of these bananas I’m selling; every one of the pineapples I’m selling. He is still very happy with the market and the market is growing. The market is right here, this is the kind of place where you really just have to be here!”

The acting president explained further that Nigeria, with the size of its economy, is a huge investment market in Africa, adding that Lagos economy is almost six times of Rwandan economy.

“My friend is from Rwanda. Rwanda is a very lovely country and Paul Kagame is an incredible individual doing really good things in that country and I believe that the country will do great things,” he said.
“But compare Rwanda to Nigeria in terms of just the size of the economy. We have 36 states in Nigeria. Lagos alone which is the commercial nerve centre is six times the economy of Rwanda.

“So, really when you compare some of these things people say ‘Oh! I want to go to there; I want to go here…Yeah!’ It’s okay. But the truth of the matter is that if you are really serious about investing in Africa, this is where you have to come to.

“This is absolutely where you must come to. There is no other place,” he added.

He also expressed excitement about the partnership being built with the Nigerian Initiative for Economic Development NIED, adding that the government will facilitate regular engagement with stakeholders on a regular basis.

“We should not lose focus. I like the idea of investors knowing that the reason why you are coming to Nigeria is not to help Nigeria. You will ultimately end up helping Nigeria, but the reason why you are coming here is because this is a good place to do business.

“And that is the only thing that should interest us and focus our minds. Ultimately, we will help our country, but first and foremost, this is a very, very good place to do business and it is going to be a profitable place—and very profitable for all of us.”

OP, this is a good lamentation.

Religion is no longer credible because a lot of bad and stolen money is involve.

I agree with you, this area need to be regulated.

I Began to wonder!!!!!....if this was how missionaries ran churches...who will believe in God
The Church has committed so many offenses....deceit, misappropriation, cheating, robbery, criminal negligence, Bribery and corruption, criminal omissions and a whole lot more.

Because missionary ran schools My father's generation were able to go to school,.....but now poor Nigerians cannot even afford the schools set up by churches..........but thank Our Government ran schools too, majority of us were able to afford..... our Government is more charitable and more benevolent than the religious body.

No body will build anything and dash Govt...yet we want free everything.....let us start paying all those tithe, seed of faith, sacrificial giving, first fruit and all that it is......Govt will manage these fund better.......there should be a regulation to remove the control of monies and properties from the hands of the so call Religious.

Make Religion unprofitable....and see the true prophets

You're right. Churches definitely made more meaningful impact in the past.

You're driving a point but post now that most persons are mourning. Do you add fire to already existing smoke? Don't you think the smoke should quench before lighting up fire

After mourning, what next? Mourning does not solve the problem in any way. You must reflect as you mourn. The real question is how do you prevent incidents like this from re-occurring. And my post is not focused on the ugly incident per se but the broader issue of religion, corruption and national development. That's what you should be discussing, not being emotional.

Why didn't you write this article since? Why wait till now when people are mourning to post this? What do you want to gain from this ?

I'm not gaining anything. I have already stated that the massacre warranted this. Events provoke thoughts. There wouldn't be mourning in the first place if the church had not accepted a building donation from a fraudulent source. What those guys did was to send a message to the guy they were after. This is a broad subject matter and we are looking at a bigger picture. This is not a thread for a fight. If you don't have a meaningful contribution to make, you will be wasting space here.

Religion / Catholic Church Massacre: We Need To Regulate The Funding Of Religious Bodies by Deeldorado: 6:36am On Aug 07, 2017
This is not an attack on religion but an attempt to get to the heart of the subject matter of religion in Nigeria.

The massacre in the Anambra church has warranted this.

I daresay that if the so-called criminal called Bishop had not made that building donation to the church, this massacre would have been avoided. They were sending a message to him. The fact that he is the donor of the church while owing them explains why they cowardly carried out the dastardly act. Religious institutions are fuelling crime and corruption by accepting criminal donations and praying for criminal donors.

Religious institutions are fond of accepting donations even when they know the sources of funding are questionable. Churches now do bazaars and launchings when they know politicians will be in church. Criminals and very corrupt people have adopted a new model: steal as much resources as you can, donate part of the proceeds to a church/mosque, get your conscience massaged and then repeat the cycle.

We just saw the case of Sokoto State buying a N700 million building for the Sultan from the funds that's meant for paying workers. Note that the Sultan already owns this building and they are just buying it back from him with public funds.

We saw the mess that CAN was under Oritsejafor and we all remember the N7 billion election scandal.

Manufacturers face challenges with getting forex for their transactions but forex for pilgrimage is readily available and heavily subsidised.

Religious institutions are part of the corruption problem in Nigeria. We need reforms in the way we see and practise religion in this part of the World or we would keep moving in circles.

Individuals are now building and donating churches and mosques in different parts of Nigeria while mass poverty remains pervasive.

In 2013, former President Goodluck Jonathan travelled to Mpu, in Aninri local govt of Enugu State to commission a gigantic church built and donated by Sen. Ike Ekweremadu. Nobody questioned the source of funding. Just beside this gigantic church was a dilapidated primary school not even fit enough for pigs.

We are not heading anywhere with this grand conspiracy of the elite across all strata of society to subjugate the masses. My take is that we need to regulate the funding of religious bodies and we need sound regulation for the activities of NGOs in the manner that the UK Charities Commission operates.

Take back your country Nigerians!

Emergency drainage after the damage has been done. This will not go far. The best you can get with this is that you redirect the flood to another area or street but nothing would really change. All these cities have master plans which have been grossly violated. Restore the original master plans and you will have peace.
Business / Re: Photos From Mohammed Indimi's 70th Birthday Celebration by Deeldorado: 3:54pm On Aug 05, 2017
Northern leaders are just using public resources to service private individuals. Yesterday, Tambuwal buys N700 million house for Sultan in Abuja (a house that belongs to the Sultan already). Today, Dankwambo splashes millions of public resources to host a birthday event for a billionaire. And yet extreme poverty predominantly remains a Northern phenomenon.
Young and poor Northerners, take back your region from this callous elite of yours!

I also agree with the write-up. You need to come to the University of Cape Town. It's comparable to any western university. Within 3 months of schooling here, I met and got the complimentary cards of two senior people from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund who came to speak in my department. To be real, school pass school o.

The opportunities you can tap into as a student are unlimited. Yet people, go and spend thousands of pounds in UK and are sent back immediately they graduate. Going to UCT made me know you could get more for less and that there are immense opportunities in Africa if only you can receive the right training and is in the right place.

The lack of access is exactly my point. Should it be difficult to access the videos? Why was the event not live-streamed? Should we be begging to access videos from what is supposed to be a launch of products for the public? Or are the celebrities at the event the only ones that will use the products. I'm very disappointed that there is no video on the internet or youtube of Google CEO, Sundar Pichai's visit to Nigeria. Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba was in Kenya and Tanzania and the sessions were live-streamed on youtube.

What is the take away from this visit if young and aspiring technology enthusiasts from different parts of Nigeria and elsewhere who were not present at the sessions cannot watch the proceedings?

I actually saw this as a good opportunity for us to showcase to the World the emergence of Nigeria as a technology hub in Africa and to put our technology companies like CcHub, Andela etc on the global spot light. And to tell the world that our young people have taken charge of their own lives.

It's unfortunate Nigerians cannot even get to watch the sessions not to talk of the world.

My frustration is that it cannot be done by coercion and this government is not leading by example. The Honourable Minister should use incentives to drive the kind of behavioural change he envisages.
