Islamic Bankiing My Experience:

Securehuda Limited has pioneered the training on Islamic Banking and Takaful. This is a collaborative effort between Securehuda Limited (Nigeria) and our technical partner Al-Huda Centre for Islamic Banking and Economics in Pakistan. We opted for the on-line, distance learning because it is more convenient, flexible and students can learn right from the comfort of their home, each with a personal tutor.

Our faculty members did contribute to the current framework for Islamic banking in Nigeria and we are equally there to provide answers on Islamic banking and finance on radio, TV and the print media.

Training: Our primary focus in training in Islamic banking and Insurance is building the knowledge and the human capital/skills required for this industry, we seek to enhance the competency of personnel who wish to serve in this sector in-line with global best practice.


Islamic Finance is relatively new to a lot Nigerians (Muslims and non-Muslims) however, we see a lot of zeal on the part of the Muslims to learn it as part of their faith and the non Muslims are more focus in their approach to learning. They are interested in the knowledge from a more professional angle; they are more inquisitive and always coming back to the tutors with more and more questions. Their answers are more organised and they do lots of research as against copying the study packs.

 We have a total of 46 students, who are currently running their diploma program, of this number, 41 of the students are non Muslims who are mostly bankers, students, lawyers, clergy, and consultants. We have made deliberate attempts to reach Muslims directly and we want to believe that the responses are generally poor. We have received a number of brothers in our office who want to know if we offer employment after the training, if we can offer the diploma after 2-3 weeks of study or less. If we can organise a talk shop and issue a diploma at the end. I think the motivation for people is different and this is a good platform to see what is driving us as a people.


On scholarship to students: we wrote to all Islamic organisations in Lagos offering a single scholarship slot to each of the organisation. Seven Islamic organisations responded and we conducted and induction for all the students. In 3 months they all abandoned the free course on flimsy grounds. (Too busy, when can they get employment from this, etc).

At the moment we no longer offer scholarship, we allow students to apply, evaluate their educational background and place them accordingly. I think we will have a sizeable number of none-Muslims in the future occupying very sensitive position in Islamic banks. Except we have a change of attitude and vision. Am I sad about this trend? I don’t think so, Islamic Finance is found in judio-Christian scriptures and found in the Quran.
