Science/TechnologyHovercraft- What Do You Know About Hovercraft? by dekins(op): 8:41pm On Nov 16, 2013
To start with I am not too sure which category to place this hence I will appreciate if the mods put it in the appropriate category.

One thing that has always amazed me is the rate at which inventions has grown over the years by the practical application of science which has contributed immensely in solving most problems encountered by humans. This is not to say that inventions are restricted to the sciences but bulk of modern day discoveries has science at their core front. As a result of these great discoveries one question that is often asked is if science is a blessing or a curse. This without fail has equally led to a debate as to whether if science has done more harm than good.

I have always wanted to know more about hovercraft and how they work as well as their possible uses and applications. From my little findings I have this to share. I guess a great number of people already know some things about hovercraft.

The hovercraft is more or less a specialized type of vehicle that is capable of travelling over land, water, mud or ice and other surfaces both at speed and when stationary. It is a vehicle supported on a cushion of air supplied by a powered fan mounted on the craft. Its invention was done by Christopher Cockerell in 1956. It is also known as an air-cushion vehicle (ACV) . It works by its ability to produce a large volume of air (with the help of blowers) located at bottom of its hull that is slightly above atmospheric pressure. The difference in pressure between the higher pressure air below the hull and lower pressure ambient air above it produces lift, which causes the hull to float above the running surface. It was originally tested in 1955 using an empty KiteKat cat food tin inside a coffee tin, an industrial air blower and a pair of kitchen scales. Hovercraft is able to travel over small obstructions without damage. Its design comes in various sizes and it now has many features compared to when it was first invented as a result of technological advancement.

Presently hovercraft are used globally as specialized transports in disaster relief, coastguard, military and survey applications as well as for sport or passenger service. They also have military applications for transporting tanks, soldiers and large equipment in hostile environments and terrain.

As a matter of fact hovercraft can used for leisure, rental ,commercial, military, patrol, survey and rescue purposes. Thus their applications and types are leisure hovercraft, rental hovercraft, survey hovercraft, commercial hovercraft, military patrol hovercraft, UXO hovercraft, rescue hovercraft and super yacht hovercraft.

Hovercraft Applications

Hovercraft comes in different varieties, designs, make and sizes.

The one that is available as a 4-stroke 120HP or 2-stroke 65HP variant take up to 4 adults with speeds up to 40mph.The Hov Pod SPX is the perfect all in one craft to take on the role of other vehicles for traditional coastal/inland/border patrol. It is more or less the only vehicle suitable for areas that are not accessible to conventional vehicles because they can operate effectively and efficiently over mud, riverbeds, tidal regions, rapids, shingle beaches, open water, grass, sand, swamps, marshland, weeds, submerged plants, snow, desert, ice, roads, shallow lakes & dried up salt marshes. These and other reasons make the hovercraft an ideal vehicle for government as well as Oil &Gas companies in securing pipelines.

The new TCC 3-layer composite High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is lightweight, extremely buoyant, yet far stronger & more impact resistant than brittle glass fibre (GRP) which cracks & breaks on impact. You can hit HDPE with a mallet or jump up & down on it without cracking it, this means the Hov Pod can withstand operational use, impacts, knocks & bumps that destroy other craft.

The Hov Pod skirt material is a unique specially developed weave & fabric combination with anti-rip properties & incredible wear resistance. It means you can operate in greater safety & will not be forever changing or repairing skirts. Individual skirt sections & the unique IAPSS skirt design gives far greater flexibility, continued operational ability & high speed safety.

Hov Pod’s have been used in many applications & by various clients in severe conditions, just a few amongst these include:

They have been used by the UN world food organisation.
Used by the oil industry in remote locations in central Asia & Middle East.
Used as commercial workboats & rescue boats day in and day out at various locations.
Australian EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
South Korean fire & rescue departments
Used in dried up salt lakes for many 100's of hours.
They have been used in northern Norway & Canada in winter.
Used in the Middle East & African counties such as Sudan & the Congo in desert & very hot & dusty areas.
They have been used by the German DLRG
They have been used by the Red Cross
They have undergone European inspection in France. The Hov Pod went through the French Centre de Securite Des Navires marine certification approval. This stringent process involved technical/fire/safety inspection, flooded buoyancy tests & operational use.
They have been approved by Harrods of London for sale.

Other Useful Applications of Hovercraft are:

Border/coastal/inland patrol, anti-terrorism, drug smuggling patrol.
High speed marine sub surface & ground scanning survey & detection.
Rescue work from flooded areas, mud, sand, tidal areas. Hovercraft do not create the problem with downdraft associated with helicopters, & a fraction of the cost to purchase, operate & maintain. Rescuers can reach floods, mud, sand & ice victims without exposing rescuers to life threatening danger.
Distribution of famine or flood aid support craft. Relief work (United Nations).
Civil emergency & infrastructure support
Oil industry survey, exploration & pipeline patrol.
Electrical Power-line patrol & safety.
Remote mining access support vehicle.
River, lake & port geological surveys.
Mud & riverbed sampling.
Environmental projects & clean-up operations.
Airport bird scaring/support/rescue services.
Coastal civil engineering & bridge construction & repair/maintenance.
Transport, service & safety craft for river & low tide coastal work where 24-hour access is vital for staff safety.
Fish farm & low tide access.
Leisure & family fun, rental operations, corporate entertainment, Education & schools, summer fetes & shows.
Access to riverside, lakeside & island properties. Hovercraft travel over mud, sand & ice. Hovercraft are not restricted by tide, or fast running water, shallow water, or submerged rocks, coral, or marine life.
SuperYacht Tenders
Filming & TV work.

PoliticsRe: Goa Minister Apologizes For Cancer Comment On Nigerians by dekins: 11:20pm On Nov 07, 2013
It's high time we stood up against all these defamatory remarks and comparison about Nigeria. I have a dream that in a none distant time Nigeria will over take most countries economically. If only we can take the last position in all corruption related issues then Nigeria will be greater. Our image has been dented by a few of us who in the quest of getting rich over night. Our Government should make good policies that will boost rapid development in all the sectors in Nigeria so as to make Nigeria great. As citizens let's support our leaders in prayers as well as making frantic effort in making Nigeria an enviable nation to others. Yes we can make it a reality! Since the so called Indian senator thinks Indian is medically ok maybe he can help cure the cancerous Nigeria he created. But wait, it is only Nigeria that can cure herself from all these mess.

I don't think there's a problem with the bastardization of English especially if it is done just for entermainment. Even the whites equally bastardize English in one way or the other. However, it is left for whoever that wants to bastardize English in either formal or informal gatherings. It is either you bastardize English and be famous or don't and be infamous. Period!!!

Jobs/VacanciesTop 24 Jobs With Low Stress And High Pay by dekins(op): 2:50pm On Sep 09, 2013
http://infonownow..com/2013/09/top-24-jobs-with-low-stress-and-high-pay.html
Do you feel like you're just making it through day after grueling day of work while only barely keeping up with your bills? Maybe it's time you considered a career with low stress and high pay. They do exist, according to the fortunate folks who have discovered them.

Online salary database PayScale.com recently conducted a survey and asked workers about their stress levels at work. Those jobs considered "low stress" were rated as "a little stressful," "not stressful" or "relaxing" by at least 40 percent of the respondents in the survey.
And, it turns out that many of these jobs pay well. The following are 10 well-paid, low stress gigs. We've included the requirements for getting started in these jobs and how much they pay per year, according to PayScale.com.

1. Biostatistician
Median annual salary: $86,000
If you're a natural number-cruncher and lover of science, biostatistics will keep you employed, well-funded and, apparently, happy. Most statistician jobs require a master's degree, and 30 percent of statisticians are employed by the government, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

2. Software Developer
Median annual salary: $70,000
Here's a great job that's expected to be in very high demand in the coming years, according to the BLS. Applicants with a bachelor's degree or higher will have better job prospects and earnings. Obviously, some developer jobs are more stressful than others depending on the company you work for, but many developers attest that the low-stress gigs do exist.

3. Business Analyst, IT
Median annual salary: $69,000
As companies adopt more complicated technologies going forward, business analysts with IT skills will be in high demand. A bachelor's degree will get you started, though a master's will put you ahead of the competition.

4. Physical Therapist (PT)
Median annual salary: $69,000
This gig puts you in direct contact with people and offers the satisfaction of helping others. Plus, it has great prospects for the future as demand for physical therapists is growing, according to the BLS. You must complete at least a master's degree, pass a national exam and gain licensure in your state.

5. Mechanical Engineer
Median annual salary: $68,000
Mechanical engineers design industrial equipment and consumer products of all kinds. Perhaps being able to actually create something makes this job satisfying and lower in stress. You need a bachelor's degree to enter the field.

6. Aircraft Pilot, Corporate Jet
Median annual salary: $64,000
While pilots who fly jumbo jets for major airlines or take military planes into enemy territory may feel a lot of stress, the pilots who fly corporate jets report little stress on the job. Getting this gig requires extensive training, thousands of hours of flight time and, increasingly, a bachelor's degree.

7. Database Analyst
Median annual salary: $60,000
Database experts will be in very high demand through 2018, according to the BLS. Analysts help companies optimize how they store, organize, use and present data. A bachelor's degree is common, though an associate's degree, professional certifications and work experience may also get you a job.

8. Financial Analyst
Median annual salary: $59,000
Financial analysts advise people or companies on investment decisions. Their work can be very highly paid, depending on expertise and the size of the investments. A bachelor's degree is required, as well as various professional certifications and licenses.

9. Technical Writer
Median annual salary: $56,000
A technical writer has a knack for making complicated topics easy to understand. The job requires a bachelor's degree, ideally in communication, journalism or English, and it helps to have expertise in a technical topic. Job prospects here are good, especially when writing for the Web.

10. Internal Auditor
Median annual salary: $56,000
As business regulations become more stringent, internal auditors will be more in demand. An internal auditor checks to make sure that a company's internal financial controls are working and looks for waste or fraud. The work requires a bachelor's degree, at least, though a master's degree and further certification improves earnings and job prospects.

Shortlisted stories will focus specifically on issues such as: sanitation and water-borne diseases, infectious and noninfectious diseases, neglected diseases, vaccines and immunisation. Submissions should include investigative, data-driven stories that employ multi-platform approaches and engage the public through social media and other digital tools.
The African Story Challenge advisory council comprising senior journalists and editors will oversee the shortlisting process. The finalists will be brought together for intensive sessions to improve their project ideas. Cross-country reporting and collaboration or joint applications between different media organisations is highly encouraged.
An independent international panel of editors and media experts will judge the entries. Grantees who produce the best stories published or broadcast in media that reach African audiences will win cash prizes or a major reporting trip abroad.
The Story Challenge is a project of the African Media Initiative (AMI), the continent’s largest association of media owners and operators. AMI content development director and former Knight International Journalism Fellow Joseph Warungu is leading the project. The Knight Fellowships are administered by theInternational Center for Journalists(ICFJ).

“Without good health there is no wealth. This competition is aimed at encouraging journalists and media organisations to break away from the routine issues on the daily agenda and pitch to us bold and creative ideas on health,” said Warungu, a former BBC Africa Editor.

AMI Chief Executive Amadou Mahtar Ba added,

“we want to support innovation in the telling of more and better stories on health and development in Africa. AMI is committed to support the media to expand coverage of fundamental issues that matter to Africans and the building of a strong media sector.”

Winners of the first round of the grant programme, which opened in May 2013 and focused on Agriculture and Food Security, will be announced in November. Other themes to be launched next year in this $1M challenge include business and technology.
