People forget that: 1. Mr Tinubu will appoint the next INEC Chairman before 2027 2. 2027 Presidential election will take place before Governorship election, so opposition Governors going for a 2nd term will have to play it safe with the President. These Governors will fear that if the President is re-elected, he can mess their own re-election up. These ones will prefer Mr Tinubu to win, if he will guaranty non-interference with their own elections. There is still a lot of games to be played before 2027. That is why you'll see that the only PDP Governors making noise are Messrs Makinde, and the Bauchi guy, neither of who is going for re-election. |
N3TRAL:Compared to previous administrations, there's actually been fewer obvious examples of corruption. No doubt, corruption is going on every where every day, at federal, State, and local government area levels. The woman Minister, Eyo, or whatever her name is and another senior lady in the Ministry were removed. I am not aware of other obvious incidents of corruption that have come to the public domain though I stand to be corrected. Even on flamboyant spending, that has reduced significantly. The administration bought a plane. Ok, was it necessary or needed. Many would say it wasn't necessary while others would say it was. The jamboree on foreign trips in the early part of this administration has stopped to a large extent. The President has issued guidance on how many people can accompany him, the vice President etc on foreign and local trips, and in recent months, we can see that the size of entourage has reduced significantly. Cadillac Escalade for the President is nothing at all. What is the big deal in a vehicle that many private individuals in Nigeria also use. The President is over 70 years old. Getting into and out of an SUV is easier for older people than a low lying Mercedes-Benz car. So, all in all, it seems to me that the government has cut down significantly on frivolous expenses in the past 6 months or so. |
No. This is the most reformist government in the history of Nigeria. Worst Government? Mr Jonathan's government is a strong contender. How the man's government wasted over $100 billion dollars in 6 years with Mrs Okonjo Iweala even borrowing to pay salaries, remains a mystery. |
Molineoux:I was wondering too. I suspect they need a new law, or an amendment to an existing law. That would mean a bill would have to go through the National Assembly. That needs time. |
Just because politicians hoarding dollars have been part of the problem doesn't mean a politician like Mr Tinubu can't change things. One thing we have learnt in the past 18 months is that, whether it is removing fuel subsidy, foreign exchange subsidy, local government financial independence, student loan, going after and destroying unprecedented number of bandit leaders, this President has the courage to make changes that past Nigerian leaders have considered too hot to handle. Whether ot not you like his policies, one thing is sure, you must not bet against him dealing with unwholesome dollar hoarding. The man no send. |
IamaNigerianGuy:No, he is not. Trying to find a solution to a self-inflicted problem that has existed for several decades is not madness. You can't open a dollar account at any bank branch in the UK, nor can you open a Pounds account at a bank in the US. Why should individuals be allowed to operate dollar accounts in Nigeria. Is it our legal tender ![]() This is one of the factors fueling the current misalignment of the naira. The government needs to phase out dollar accounts. It should not be possible for any individual to open or operate a dollar account. |
Kobojunkie:Nigeria can run itself the way it chooses. We are not China. After the expiration of the 9 months grace period, cash deposits at bank branches should be limited to a maximum of $100 per person per week. Anything more than that can only be deposited at a single CBN - designated bank in each State. Dollar cash withdrawal should also be limitedl to $100 per week per person. Since dollar is not our legal tender, it is even questionable whether anybody should be allowed to withdraw dollars in cash. To do what? Buy tomatoes? Those who need to make foreign payments should obtain dollar Atm card with a maximum spending limit of $1000 per month. Possession of more than $1000 cash should result in automatic forfeiture to the government and prosecution for money laundering. The government should then set out a 2 year plan for phasing out individual dollar accounts. After the 2 years, all existing individual dollar accounts will close and banks will not be able to open new ones. Only companies involved in import and export should be able to open and operate dollar accounts. |
LadyExcellency:Most Nigerian banks are not doing well on the customer service front. GTB is becoming more and more frustrating. |
GTB, fewer branches than Zenith, First Bank, Access, UBA etc, yet makes more profit. Consistently the most capital-efficient efficient bank in Nigeria. GTB makes very little noise. |
Distribution companies serving the Northern areas that dont pay power bills, will struggle to make enough money to buy electricity to distribute. If they cant make money, then they will not take up all the power allocated to them by generating companies. Power companies in the South will swoop in, buy the additional allocations, and supply it to their paying customers. |
No lawyer will file an action without a person's consent. A SAN will certainly not do so. The negative public reaction to news of the Governor seeking those outrageous orders has certainly spooked the Attorney General into make a statement this morning. We need to know the truth. |
SA is learning that putting all your eggs in Russia's BRICS will not work out for most African countries in the long run. Russia is not going to save you in the long run. It doesn't have the capacity. I hope the Nigerian government doesn't listen to social media noise from some Nigerians clamouring for the country to join BRICS. Nigeria should not join. Nigeria's BRICS partner-status announced recently is where it should stop. As the largest country in Africa, both the Western alliance and BRICS wants Nigeria on their side. Nigeria should remain non-Allied, and be smart in benefiting from both sides. |
helinues:Any Nigerian has a right to comment on happenings anywhere in the country. |
Even powerful NNPCL ran from Dangote refinery. The whole thing is a mess. I think some people are determined to show Mr Dangote 'pepper'. Initially, people thought NNPCL was the problem. Now, it is Marketers refusing to buy from him. |
Both can go hand in hand. Infrastructure doesn't have to be left behind. By the way, saying that a region of over 40 million people need re-education just because a President that you disagree with comes from that region is taking things too far. The President believes in one approach, you believe in another. So? What's that got to do with SW people. When did you sample the views of all 40 million of them to come to a conclusion on their views. And yes, your write up is tribal. |
Salewa97:1. Incorect. PDP has always been strong in Ondo State. The only reason APC will probably win is they will have greater capacity to financially induce voters on election day. 2. The Muslim population in Ondo is probably less than 20%. It's funny that you think muslims in the State will vote APC because of a religious celebration coming up a week after the election. Unlike Osun, Oyo, and may be Lagos, there is no history of tension between Christians and Muslims in Ondo and Ekiti to warrant voting on the basis of religion. You can hardly tell who is Muslim or Christian. Religion has zero relevance in elections in those 2 states. They don't and won't vote along religious lines. Politicians of all parties carry all sides along. |
Paramount01:I can't speak for the entire South, but I don't believe South West people will fold their hands and blame a national government if they know the vandals are their own people living amongst them. Kings, prominent people and the youths will come out forcefully to condemn the perpetrators, and the youths will join in hunting them down. In a situation like this, the affected communities in the North need to rise up in a single voice in condemnation of the perpetrators of this terrible acts. Such united voice of condemnation would send a strong signal to the perpetrators, and may even dissuade them. However, when whole communities focus on blaming a federal government in distant Abuja, this will only encourage the perpetrators. You can't blame federal government for everything. |
Paramount01:Correct. CCTV won't prevent a determined vandal from doing whatever he wants to do. Another commenter even said AI will solve all these problems. That's laughable. It seems many people spend too much time watching YouTube and TikTok videos on security. That's not the real world. |
AntiChristian:This is just unrealistic, fanciful, theoretical suggestions. AI cannot PREVENT these attacks. It might tell you when it happens. But knowing AFTER the vandalism has happens still doesn't stop the loss of power. CCTV? So you think all the thousands of miles of high-power electric cables across forests all over Nigeria can be covered by CCTV? Even if they are, will that stop one or two people wearing baseball cap from doing what they need to do. |
GOFRONT:These things are not that easy. Many of these important electrical infrastructure including high-power lines are located in remote locations, including inside thick forests. Serious vandalism that can bring down power across vast swathes of the country can be done within 2 - 5 minutes, and it can happen in many different locations. It is not practicable to provide 24hr, round the clock security for all of the infrastructure. Not even the USA can provide such level of security across its entire electricity network. So, this is not about government alone. It is about citizens who choose to do to their country horrendous things that citizens of other countries will never do to their country. |
The President is trying. Crude oil to be sold to local refiners in naira. Gas to be priced in naira. To think that all these years under Saint Obasanjo, Mr Jonathan etc, cooking gas that is produced locally was priced in dollars before being sold to long suffering Nigerians ![]() Now, this President is stopping that daft policy. T Pain is working. |
In just 18 months, Mr Tinubu has brought in more far reaching reforms than Mr Obasanjo did in 8 years. The only thing I remember of the Obasanjo era is debt forgiveness and banking reforms. Most of the endemic problems Nigeria faces today, including wanton corruption by the political class, election malpractices, political assassinations started under Mr Obasanjo's watch. |
Isn't that the Agency that declared Dangote Refinery products was substandard. Suddenly, House of Rep Committee shook their eyes into the Agency's matter and discovered N32 billion loophole. How come House of Rep suddenly remembered they needed to investigate the Agency's financial records, after all the years of the Agency's establishment. Those who can put 2 and 2 together knows what this is all about. |
Wonderful. Excellent public servant. She has worked in the Ministry and also proven herself as a school administrator. She should be Minister of State for Education (Primary and Secondary Schools). But politicians will block people like her. |
The damage (inflation) caused by the 20 trillion naira Ways and Means and the rest of money printed under Mr Buhari is going to take several years more to repair. That is why the CBN is doing all it can to bring down inflation, yet it remains stubbornly high. If Nigeria goes on another reckless naira printing jaunt, inflation will get worse and remain so for at least 10, may be 15 years. Naira will collapse. A loaf of bread will be sold for N25,000, if we are lucky. If we are unlucky, may be N50,000. A bag of Cement, N100,000 or more. Petrol? At least 70% of the cars on Nigerian roads today will be permanently parked at home to rot. Petrol will simply be unaffordable. There is hunger now. Then it will be starvation. It will be unbearable. Ask Zimbabwe. In Nigeria's case, ethnic blame game will reach unprecedented levels. Igbos will blame Yorubas for bringing Messrs Buhari and Tinubu. Yorubas will blame Mr Jonathan for squandering the large foreign reserve Nigeria had then. Igbos will support Mr Jonathan. Everyone will conveniently blame Northerners for every bad thing that has happened to Nigeria since independence, absolving their own people of any blame. In frustration, Northerners will say they have had enough of blackmail by Southerners. It will be chaos. Any military coup will be short lived because the military will also split along ethnic lines. Inter tribal strife will break out. People will start moving back to their regions out of fear of civil war. One or two Southern regions will declare independence. Any attempt to hold the country together will likely fail. All because of reckless naira printing o. Don't say those consequences can't happen. If any politician promises you magic in 2027, don't believe him o. There is no easy and quck way out for Nigeria. Nigeria must pay for the recklessness of its past governments. We can recover, but only if we take tough decisions now. |
Ikaeniyan0:Though not popular, I think the Minister of power seem to finally have a grip on the Power brief. I have seen more electricity in my area in the past 3 months than at any time during the past 10 years. And I am not in Band A. Infrastructure is now the main problem in the power sector. |
Before names are made public, contact will have been made with some of those concerned to check their acceptance. My guess is that Mrs Ojukwu has already accepted in private. |
Mindlog:She probably tried to do things the right way. Most government workers don't like that. |
I am disappointed the President did not move her to another department, instead if letting her go. I liked her even though her performances in front of the camera suggested she lacked a bit of experience. But I admire her strength of character. When you see Nigerian workers jubilating at the departure of a boss, it is usually either the boss was a bad boss, or a good disciplined boss who tried to change their usual inefficent and corrupt ways. I suspect the woman belonged in the latter category. |
Mr Dangote himself stood before news cameras in August and announced to the Nigerian people that his company was ready to supply petrol. He also went on a PR stunt to suggest his refinery was not being supplied enough crude. Now, crude is being supplied, and still he is producing way below what he promised. Yet, he is taking the government to court demanding that other businesses including NNPCL should be stopped from importing petrol. ![]() Those who want to import must be allowed to do so. |
The most reformist national government in the history of Nigeria. If you disagree, name any government since independence that introduced anything on the scale of the numerous bold, courageous and fundamental economic changes that this man's government has taken in just 18 months. The only government, though a regional one, that did better is the outstanding Western Nigeria government led by Chief Awolowo. That is not to say that the ongoing changes are painless. They are not, and I hope the government finds a solution quickly to help the large proportion of the population that desperately needs help. I still don't understand why it is proving so difficult for the government to transfer money to elderly people on a monthly basis. Ms Edu left the scene a long time ago, yet social payments have not resumed. Mr Tinubu, what the hell is going on ![]() It is so painful to see so many needing help and not getting it while politicians are living fat. |
NothingDoMe:In this case, some factors have not remained constant. With prices in August and September hovering above N1000 in many areas, smuggling of petrol to neighbouring countries will have reduced. Improvement in power supply in certain parts of the country has resulted in fewer people fueling their generators at the same level as before. Finally, fuel price increase has resulted in many car owners cutting down on their car usage. These 3 factors have contributed to usage levels crashing. |
