Oga, am not blind. Am observing things from a safe area. Rain has made their number to dwindle.

Am in a safe area far away from these Biafra Crooks observing developments. Rain has temporarily stopped, some are hungry, some are cold. A lot of them have gone back to open their shops and sheds.

ting

I am not against what Senator Bruce said, in principle.
I am only contrasting/comparing what the South African Deputy President said against the mentality and attitude of Nigerian officials and Nigerians in general when Nigerians/Nigerian companies face similar sanctions in other countries e.g. in Ghana, Malaysia etc.
We must first charge our people to respect the host nation's laws FIRST, then other considerations or negotiations can follow.

Ok, stop being vague. Give me specific examples to substantiate ur claim.

Personally, I refused to accept that MTN should pay as much as N1.42trillion as FINE.

Did MTN agreed to the fine before they chose to flout it? If they signed for it then, why now shying away from taking responsibility?

If I were the CEO of MTN South Africa, I would rather negotiate for a reduced fine or pull out of Nigeria.

And Nigeria has the prerogative not to agree with u. Ooo I see, pull out from a business unit that supplies 1/3 of ur worldwide income. Believe u me, ur shareholders will eat u raw. Already, they Av applied and granted extension of their operating license.

That amount is too much for a single company to pay.

For many companies, it is but for MTN, it's not.

I am sure Nigerian would not want MTN to pull out.

If that is so, Nigeria wouldn't have speedily approved an extension of their operating license within 2 weeks when MTN applied. Ur allegation has no basis.

The lesson I want people to draw from the SA Deputy President's comment is: Respect your host country's laws if you do not want to fall into trouble, and we Nigerians must learn that

I agree. In addition, if u chose to flout any of the laws, be ready to face the music when applied.

mikeapollo:
I hope you will say the same thing when Nigerian companies come under similar sanctions in other countries.

Yes I will. I don't expect Nigeria companies to go outside and start disobeying their rules and regulations. MTN signed and agreed to this so it's right for them to face the music. They are not even claiming ignorance. Wise up please.

What the South African Deputy President said is the right thing for reasonable people.

The deputy President is simply saying........MTN, u signed for the approx $1000 per SIM penalty. U Av flouted the law,now pay up. Simple.

But here in Nigeria, we think other countries owe us any special duty so they must not sanction Nigerians/Nigerian businesses when they run foul of the laws of the country.

I don't know about these Nigerians u are reffering to but what I know is am surely not among those.

That is when we start talking about discrimination, hatred, jealousy and other silly excuses[/s]

An agreement is an agreement but all we are asking the judge is to temper justice with mercy thou Mtn doesn't deserve any.

Just that ripple effects will be on the masses because after paying the huge fine they will like to cut production n delivery costs by sacking some staffs and increasing workload for the remaining..

Don't be bothered. Because of competitors who themselves are capable, MTN dare not increase tariffs anyhow. They will loose a substantial number of subscribers to their competitors. As for staffs, MTN is going no where even if tariff is double what they asked them to pay because Nigerian market gives them one third of their entire earnings. Already they willingly applied and were granted extension of their operating license. Does that suggest a company ready to wind up?

some of you just comment without the aids of common sense, the senator was right, the fine is way too much unless the aim is not to deter others from flouting the laws, possibly a revenge or something petty. Before some of you run off to post like little angry children, you should also consider the effect such a fine will have not just on foreign investment but also on the Nigerians who make up more than 90% of their workforce, unless you do not care if they lost their job as a result of this preposterous fine.

Nobody is saying the NCC should not fine them for violation but they must do so with some degree of fairness and moderation, you don't throw the baby and the bathwater away just because you want to have a clean bath.... Think before you comment and mislead others.
[/s]

The same repeated senseless thrash being peddled around. Before the law was flouted, MTN was aware and signed for it and knew of the repercussions yet they chose to disobey. That the fine is excessive is debatable and can be amended subsequently but the will be after they have faced this music. U and the likes of Bruce are the kind of peeps drawing this nation back.
Rubbish.

Can u imagine......all other telcos including foreigners complied except MTN who chose not to with a whooping 5.2 million subscribers. What do they take us for? They were aware of the penalty of approximately $1000 for each SIM and they signed for it. Yet they still went ahead to flout it.
The fine is legitimate and MTN should urgently pay up or close shop and go. ( of cos, they are going no where even if the fine is double what they are suppose to pay now. grin Greedy arseholes. grin)

Shame to that hypocrite called Senator Bruce. Our laws, rules and regulations must be obeyed. Any foreign investor that isn't comfortable with it shouldn't bother to come while those already here operating under impunity should close shop and go home. A new sheriff is now in charge. Era of impunity is over.
InvestmentMTN Must Respect Laws Of Host Countries - South Africa Deputy President by Demdem(op): 2:42am On Nov 08, 2015
South Africa’s Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged Africa’s biggest mobile-phone company, the MTN Group Ltd., to follow the rules in countries where it is operating.

This followed a fine of $5.2 billion imposed on MTN by telecoms industry regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), for failing to disconnect customers with unregistered phone cards.

NCC gave MTN until November 16 to pay the fine, which relates to the timing of the disconnection of 5.1 million subscribers and is based on a charge of N200,000 ($1,005) for each unregistered customer.

Nigeria is the Johannesburg-based MTN’s biggest market with 62 million clients as of September.

The company’s shares have slumped 14 per cent since October 26, when the fine was imposed.
Ramaphosa, in an address to lawmakers in Cape Town yesterday, said the government would be taking note of what “is happening with a view of seeing how the company involved responds and reacts” to its challenges.

“We would like our companies to comply with the laws and regulations of countries where they operate, without violating them.

“It does seem like in the case of Nigeria, there were issues, and those issues need to be addressed.

“If this fine is indeed imposed as it is, it is going to impact on South Africa as well, as our revenue fortunes from a taxation point of view are going to be lower,” he said.

Agency reports indicated that comments by Ramaphosa, a former chairman of MTN, suggested that South African authorities might leave MTN to face its problem as it seeks to have the penalty reduced.

South African authorities might also be reluctant to confront their Nigerian counterparts following a series of diplomatic spats that have soured relations between the Africa’s two biggest economies.

The most recent occurred in April, when Nigeria’s government allegedly ordered its two most senior diplomats in South Africa to return home for consultations following a wave of attacks against immigrants, including Nigerians, in Johannesburg and Durban.

“South Africa does not have a track record of defending its national company champions internationally,” Nic Borain, a political analyst, who advises BNP Paribas Cadiz Securities, said by phone.

“On the face of it, this fine seems seriously over the top. Ramaphosa’s words about the issue seem weak as they veer too much on the side of caution,” he added.

South Africa’s telecommunication and finance ministries didn’t respond to agency’s calls and e-mails seeking comment.

Lawmakers plan to summon MTN officials to explain why the company was fined, Nkhensani Kubayi, chairwoman of Parliament’s telecommunications committee, said by phone from Cape Town.

The panel will also ask the South African industry regulator to determine whether MTN is compliant with local rules, with hearings likely to take place next year, she said.

Everything starting from the foundation of the conference is wrong about the conference report.
The conference report was basically similar to what Obj's report presented so why should we expect another different result from what Obj's report faced.
Starting with the so called delegates selection (many of which were political patronage), to duration, to the entire operations down to what and what must and must not be discussed made it a fraudulent conference/report.
Any conference that doesn't discuss if we want to be together and basis of being together if so is a fraudulent conference. Jonah-daft the curse deliberately removed this vital point from being discussed which rendered the entire conference a very useless one. Instead, these fools were discussing about more states.
We demanded for a Sovereign National conference (SNC) where these vital fundamental questions threatening our existence will be answered for the first time by ourselves in our history but Jonah-daft and his cohorts gave us a National Conference (NC) whose report is bound to be subjected to NASS politics and caprises. If these questions were diligently answered and attended to, nonentities and never-do-well eediots who are proponents of this Biafra nonsense wont even have any basis for their agitation. Even the otueke drunkard never knew what will become of the report himself. When asked, he said maybe referendum. Peeps like me saw this and forewarned that it's another jamboree. Fools disagreed then and now they are shouting Blue murder. Exposing their useless bigotry, shouting hausa this, hausa that as if hausa is the reason why they are so senseless.
By the way, Ffuck hausa.
Besides, during campaign, General Buhari and his party publicly categorically stated that they don't believe in the NC report and expect to junk It if elected yet vast majority of Nigerians still went ahead to vote them in. This simply mean that vast majority of Nigerians don't want the implementation. It's as basic as that.
The conference report is just another hopeless report that has already been shredded just like her earlier conference reports. Only fools will try and resurrect it.
Pending when a true SNC is convened, u goons can continue to gnash ur teeth on a dead issue.
Conference report my left arse.

Am solving respect to ordinary Nigerians on the street.
Don't be deceived, even if the fine was doubled, MTN isn't going anywhere. On their own volition, they applied for further operating right and already they have been granted. They get most of their income from the Nigerian economy.
It's only criminous or errant foreign investors that needs to be scared and such are not wanted on our soil.
Investors that respects us, our laws and willing to abide to our rules and regulations have nothing to fear. Show me any other investor that has been treated likewise? None. So ur point has no basis.
