Jide Alade, MD/CEO, Structuracasa International LLC

Jide Alade is a man who knows what his mission is as a businessman in Nigeria. His knowledge of real estate extends far beyond his passion for residential real estate. He has a long-term perspective on housing in Nigeria and has been able to see beyond the grandiose nature of Lagos to focusing on tapping into the resources and opportunities that Ibadan has to offer. His grasp on the problem that housing is facing in the country makes him a true visionary.

My first question is, were you born and raised in Ibadan?

I was born and raised in Ibadan. I grew up here; I went to Staff School, University of Ibadan. After Staff School, I left Ibadan for secondary school, University of Lagos, Youth Service Corps in Abuja then I went aboard. It was 5 years ago that I came back to Ibadan and started rediscovering my roots and I love it.
Most people know real estate as the buying and selling of houses. Can you expatiate on what real estate is?

Can you expatiate on what real estate is?

Real estate has anything to do with the built environment, any type of space that people live in, do business in, recreate in, shop in, is real estate. Our focus is on housing.

Tell us more about what you do and the impact it has on the Ibadan economy?

My area is residential real estate, my passion is housing and for Nigeria particularly I believe in the democratisation of home ownership. There are a lot of studies that tell us that the population of Nigeria is increasing rapidly and there is not enough housing, which is one big issue. Real estate is a driver of the economy, as you build you creates jobs, goods are bought and sold, and commerce is generated.

What are some of the problems you’ve found with the real estate sector in Nigeria?

A big issue we’ve been having in Nigeria is the ability to provide a payment methodology for people who are buying residential real estate and pay for it over time, that is, mortgage. That is a market that is still in its infancy. The percentage of mortgage outstanding to GDP in Nigeria is below 1%. A lot of advanced economies go much higher than that. So there’s very little mobility, people don’t move houses or change houses frequently which also affects the economy.

Any plans to branch out of residential real estate into other real estate facets?

At this time, the focus is residential and we might do something here or there in other sectors but not as a primary core of our business. There’s more than enough work to be done in the residential real estate space in Nigeria.

Have you always known that real estate was the path you wanted to take?

Growing up, I wanted to be a pilot but I didn’t have very good eyesight, apparently, guys that wear glasses don’t make very good pilots. I was discouraged from taking that path. Very soon after, I discovered a love for the built environment, for making things, for designing so I got into architecture. I actually don’t actively practice architecture now; I’m more on the business side of things, business strategy, real estate development. After graduating from Unilag with a degree in architecture, I went to the United States and got my Masters in Real Estate Development and an MBA in Finance.

Am I guessing right when I say there are no regrets for deciding to start your Real Estate Company in Ibadan?

I don’t think I have regrets about starting in Ibadan. Obviously, every business has issues; I won’t call them regrets I’ll say they are learning pains that one has experienced in Ibadan and one would probably have experienced anywhere else. Ibadan is giving us the opportunity to build a distinct brand.
Structuracasa International LLC was founded in 2008 by a team of US based real estate developers with combinations of skills and attributes including real estate development, real estate brokerage, business strategy, finance, home building and international business experience. This team of like minded individuals joined forces to further the democratization of housing opportunity for people in modern African societies.

prodigy24:
HISTORY

The story of ASCON OIL is the story of an idea defying all odds, born in the mind of one of Nigeria’s brightest visionaries who came, who saw and who conquered. His name: GEORGE IKEMEFUNA ENENMOH, the founding Managing Director that passed on in 2005.
“In 1985, George Enenmoh refused to be cowed by the inherent vagaries in the Nigerian business environment. He had a vision to grow a fully integrated Oil and Gas company. Barely 30 years old and still green, but armed with encouragement from his family, grit and tenacity of purpose, he launched into the murky and uncertain terrain of the Nigerian oil and gas industry; then an enclave entity. That vision led to the birth of ASCON Oil Company Limited.” – Vanguard Newspapers. October 29, 2006.
The statement above is an apt backgrounder to the thinking that led to what is known today as ASCON OIL, a company that became incorporated in 1984. Three decades down the line, we are still very clear about our vision to be Africa’s most innovative, principled and value driven oil and Gas Company. Every step of the way in the last thirty years, we have continued to live each day laying the foundation for reciprocal loyalty by setting the standards for customer satisfaction and employee engagement.
Our company started operations initially in Kano and got its NNPC/PPMC bulk purchase agreement signed in 1988 as an Independent Petroleum Products Marketer. In 1991, we moved our Headquarter to Lagos from Kano which now serves as a regional office for northern branches. In 1999, the company completed the construction of a bulk storage terminal at Ibru Port complex. Designed and constructed in its entirety by Nigerian Engineers, the terminal has a capacity of 35,000 MT with a loading capacity of 3 Million litres per day. Basically, our operations cover the marketing of refined petroleum products through retail outlets (petrol filling stations), and bulk supplies to commercial and industrial consumers.
In 2005, we added another laurel to our achievements by purchasing and taking delivery in Turkey of the twin 7000 MT capacity sea-going vessels namely MT CALIP SETER, which we named MT AGBOIYI and now presently called MT LOVELY GEORGE. The other half of the twin vessel is the MT AHMED KARAOSMAN which is also presently known as MT GRACIOUS.
From 2005 when the Founding Managing Director passed on, the baton of leadership was passed to Mrs. Grace Olowofoyeku who has sustained the dreams, the aspirations, the drive and the brilliance of the late George. Under her leadership, the company has grown in leaps and bounds, expanding its retail outlets from eleven to thirty-nine.
Sustaining the posture of a leader responsive to the ever-growing need of a populace as large as Nigeria, ASCON OIL, in 2010, expanded its business frontiers to include a new range of lubricants for the market. Innovating at the speed of need, we have brought the ASCON QUALITY to bear on the lubricant market and the buying public have been more than loyal to that gesture.
Today, we have added aviation fuel to our range of products as ASCON AVIATION commenced operations in September 2014. This is a commitment aimed at setting a new bar of performance for a sector that has zero tolerance for errors. It is a commitment to safer air journeys.
As the world goes green, we are also looking in the direction of liquefied petroleum gas, which will be a testimony of our commitment to a cleaner world. We think of your energy needs everyday. Welcome to the home of energy.

Founder of Olashore International School, Oba Oladele Olashore (CON)

Olashore International School (OIS) is a private, coeducational boarding school for 600 students which offers qualitative education in a wide range of subjects at junior, senior and advanced levels of education.

Mission Statement

The School believes that all youth should have the opportunity for education consistent with their individual capabilities and with their personal and social needs.

The School believes that change is a constant fact in life and that education should encourage in students the development of values and thinking process, which will facilitate their intelligent adaptability in a changing world.

The School believes that learning is an unbroken activity continued throughout an individual's life. Education, therefore, should foster independent thinking, exploration and experimentation as a lifelong experience.
My role as Head of School is to oversee student affairs in both the pastoral and academic departments of the school. Traditionally, the academic programme includes the curriculum, teaching and learning and performance in examinations, whilst the pastoral work of the school focuses on student welfare, extra-curricular activities and life in the boarding hostels. My view is that there is no real distinction between pastoral and academic life and that in a boarding school like Olashore, the two systems work closely together to support the overall development and welfare of each student.

The core of the pastoral structure is built around boarding life. Within the boarding hostels, the hostel parents support students in the many challenges they face in adjusting to boarding life. Many of our students are as young as ten years old when they join the school and this is often their first experience of life away from home. The hostel parents help the students to learn basic routines, such as washing clothes, tidying their personal areas and maintaining good personal hygiene. They also provide a lot of counselling, both to individual students and through regular group counselling sessions. Maintaining good relationships with peers are an important part of boarding life and the hostel parents work with student to promote good interaction and resolve the petty conflicts that inevitably arise.

A second major arm of our pastoral structure is our programme of extra-curricular activities. This includes not just sports, but also different clubs, debating groups, quiz competitions and our comprehensive programme of school visits. Through participating in a wide range of extra-curricular activities, students are able to explore their potential in different areas, whilst learning many new skills in areas such as ball sports, team-building and competitive awareness. The impact of this on personal development is often underestimated but experience shows that students who are fully involved in the extra-curricular programme often excel academically.

Of course, the health of our students is at the top of our priorities. Through our system of school refectories, we ensure that students are well-fed throughout the day with a healthy, balanced and varied menu of meals. Providing meals to meet every palate is quite a challenge, but we have a Food Committee which meets regularly and listens to the views of the students themselves in preparing future menus. Olashore does not encourage students to eat junk food, so we have no tuck shop and do not allow students to bring in food from outside when returning from vacation. Still on health, the school clinic operates under the pastoral umbrella. We have a well-qualified staff or doctors and nurses, living on site and on call 24 hours a day to attend to any health issues.

One other aspect to the pastoral system is the matter of student discipline. Olashore expects high standards of behaviour from its students and for the most part, our students and law-abiding live up to these expectations. However, when rules are broken, it is the pastoral staff who deal with the students concerned, applying appropriate sanctions in line with the school’s Code of Conduct, but also ensuring that the students involved are given the necessary counselling.

At Olashore, we believe in the development of the whole child and the pastoral system is there to ensure that each child has the support necessary to achieve his or her full potential.

Kunle Akinniran MD, VATEBRA

VATEBRA, a new technology company positioned as the backbone of major industries in Nigeria and beyond has unveiled its new corporate identity. Formerly known as Fleet Technologies Limited, VATEBRA was recently launched at the Grand Ball Room of the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos amidst pomp and pageantry.

Speaking as the guest speaker of the event, Dr. Doyin Salami of the Lagos Business School who delivered a lecture titled: Beyond Now-Nigeria without Oil, Prospect for Technology and Innovation said Nigeria need Information Communication Technology (ICT) to drive the much desired national development we all crave.

According to Dr. Salami, “Technology has become arguably, the fastest growing sector in Nigeria. In 2016 alone, ICT accounted for 10% of the total Nigerian Revenue, the highest in a decade and half.”

The erudite scholar added that recently, Nigeria ranked 121 out of 148 in the Global Innovation Index. With this in mind, he said Nigeria needs to create necessary infrastructures to accelerate technological innovations if truly the country is serious about matching up with the pace of growth and development around the world. He also, noted that the launch of VATEBRA is a great step towards achieving technological innovation in Africa.

The high point of the event was the transition of the old Fleet Technologies corporate logo to a new, dynamic and futuristic global brand identity called VATEBRA, which means backbone. With the emergence of VATEBRA therefore, the economy of Sub Saharan Africa now has a backbone upon which it can ride.

Mr. Kunle Akinniran, Managing Director of the company, in his welcome speech stated that, “as a company, we have seen the evolution of thoughts and ideas. Ideas that simplify the way we conduct business to how our students register for examinations and check their results, we have seen how the mobile device has become the first and last touch point for virtually every young person in Nigeria today.”

He also explained that as one of Nigeria’s most innovative ICT companies, VATEBRA has been at the forefront of championing innovative ICT solutions that have helped automate many manual processes both in government and private organizations.

On the part of the Deputy Managing Director of company, Mr. Mike Aigbe, the organization is just getting started. “It is a common knowledge that we as a nation depend on a mono source of revenue. The current plummeting oil prices and the high level of volatility in that sector continue to strain our economic prosperity. We must begin to explore means of converting our social-capital, creative- capital and human-capital for economic prosperity. Above all, seek ways to convert the opportunities available in technology and innovation to solutions that benefit our people, he said.

The event attracted influential personalities from federal government Agencies, multinational bodies and regulatory institutions like Registrar/CEO, NABTEB, Dr. Olatunde Aworanti; Registrar, West African Examination Council (WAEC), Dr Iyi Uwadiae, The Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, Chairman of Chams Group, Demola Aladekomo, Founder and Chairman Phillips Consulting, Mr. Folusho Phillips, Dr. Peju Adenusi (MD, Hygeia HMO Limited) and Mr. Niyi Yusuf (Country Manager, Accenture Nigeria) amongst other notable figures.
