I personally prefer Revit Architecture because it's easier for me to work in 3dsmax or Maya via exporting as CAD or FBX rather than 3ds format. I learnt it in a shorter time compared to ArchiCAD(which I couldn't just get the hang of it with its user interface)

From 3dsmax,Maya to Cinema4D,the quality of work depends on the artist's understanding of the aforementioned apps. Yes,you're 3dsmax and Maya are mainly used for movie visual effects(vfx) but also Cinema4D also.
Am more of an Autodesk user but because of Motion Graphics I need to try it out a bit more.
Lots of free videos on to learn from on www.youtube. Then for more professional tutorials visit www.pluralsight.com and lynda.com.

Animation is not cheap any part of the world if you want the best. Everyone wants to animate & not pay the price for it via sacrifice then it is all day dreaming,amigo. OrangeVFX Studios has moderate fees under a 100k promos last time I checked visit www.orangevfx.com. Otherwise you travel abroad if you are that passionate.

Thanks sirs. I did a little research on movies and games and found that they work well with maya and 3ds max mostly. I intend learning maya and 3ds max. Must I go to a school to learn them because the schools I saw cost about N200k to N300k to learn just one of the mentioned softwares. That is too costly for me. Where else can I learn it??

If I am to learn it by myself, how long can I get grip of the basics??

That isn't entirely so correct. Well given you made this comment in 2013 and this is now 2015,things have changed drastically the reading culture has improved.

2years ago,when I attended the Lagos ComicCon 2013 I met the Super Strikas creator none other than the amiable Mr. Tomi Davies in a free session on comics. He shared a lot of tips and offered to help out those who contacted him via his email.

I got the chance to meet the Comic Republic team creators Jide Martin & co of Guardian Prime, Eru, Ireti, Avonome, Hero Gen, Aje, Jade Waziri and Vanguards Rising. They didn't have a website then only social media presence but all has changed.

There's now E.X.O - The Legend of Wale Williams, a Nigerian comic that sold out on the 1st day. I got to meet the creator D-Roye Okupe at this year's ComicCon & bought my discounted copy with a branded tshirt.

Get on facebook and join the Association of Comic Makers of Nigeria(ACMON) and Nigerian Comic Artists Group (NCAG) for the latest info on the Nigerian and International comic scene.

3dsmax is still a bit more straight than complex in my own opinion. It's sister app Maya is more challenging and complex to master. As long as it's for rendering and architectural visualisation you will be fine. Check www.youtube.com, www.digitaltutors.com and www.lynda.com for videos on it.

You need to go for the training or install it and use the help file. It's quite complex, but you can export revit model for better rendering in it.

I quite disagree making tutorials can be fun depending on your attitude towards it. If you passionate sharing creative information & knowledge then it shouldn't be a boring chore. If not for Digital Tutors,Lynda,PSDBox,CubeBrush amongst the many video tutorial firms offering quality premium tutorials most of us in Nigeria wouldn't know much,youtube carried us to an extent but those higher level videos killed it always*winks winks*
On this end we don't really have the culture of sharing knowledge via web tutorials or free videos. Ironically one can make money via youtube or vimeo...na we dey dull ourselves...#period

As a newbie keep it simple for now,I recommend Adobe Photoshop,Illustrator and InDesign available in the Design or Master Suite of different versions CS3-CC(Creative Suite or Creative Cloud) depends really on your pc configuration & processor strength. Globally if you can use these apps you can work anywhere in the world & even the oldest media school in world these are what they teach. PDF is the standard for printing with them. CorelDraw is just needed especially in Nigeria because that's all printers know to how to use. Learn it also similar to Illustrator.

Hey,thanks,bro and hey we have a challenging envronment no doubt with the lack of power supply especially and training academies dedicated to Digital Comic Illustration in Nigeria. Nevertheless,people are making things happen & getting sponsorships from banks and other corporate organisations like Indomie(biggest sponsor of Lagos ComicCon)I attended this year's own and got their freebies.

Much respect OP, timely thread. Saw an ad for spiring comic writers/artists by MM. It's not easy to suceed in our enviroment and i'd advise anyone with talent to try out openings at the big foreign comic companies. Mark Millar is doing his, an advance notice as submissions will be open next week. Selected entries will be paid 90$ per page for writers and 200$ per page for artists. Not bad at all and the recognition would let the winners get a foot in the proverbial door. These guys don't care where you're from or who you are. They just want talent. All you need is a working internet link. Will be posting any more competitions or openings Marvel, DC, Vertigo or Image if i see them. Best of luck

Note the differences in the comments above on CorelDraw being more vector based than pixel while Photoshop vice-versa. CorelPaint now called CorelPainter is used digital art/painting with wacom tab just like Photoshop though less versatile in my opinion.
Illustrator is the go-to app for logo design,vector art,graphics and compatible ai. and eps. formats in the signage design/fabrication industry for the Computer Aided Machines(CAM)namely the acrylic cutting machines,vinyl plotter and CNC routers for cutting alucobond sheets,MDF,Foam boards,marine plywood amongst other materials.
InDesign is now globally the preferred application for desktop publishing of flyers,posters,magazines,comics,books just mention a few. This largely because of its ability to set document from cover page to back page at a glance unlike CorelDraw where you save out all pages or create a page layout equivalent to the pages with double leafs,tweak the design interactively and even animate the document for web upload in its inbuilt Flash slider format amongst other dope features.
Over time,media and advertising firms in Nigeria especially Lagos now ask for graphic artists who use Adobe Photoshop,Illustrator and InDesign with other apps in the Design Suite of CS3 versions upwards.
