The other day I was lambasting that newsbit attacking the President with regards to this issue, it seemed to some people that I had no premiss for such assumption.

It hurts to be compared, yes. But what our parents expect of us is to turn the pain from it into constructive energy, and we cannot blame them for wanting the best from us. If they do so, inspite of the negative feelings it may brew in us at first, they do so for our own good.
Even as you get older, you begin to compare yourself to others to motivate yourself, so, what really is their wrong?
Perhaps they overdo it, perhaps we overeact to it, all in all, lets not lose sight of the message they give.
After all, they do not expose all our wrongdoings to our faces, do they? They notice some, but keep mum on it.
Imagine a life without challenges and targets. The comparisons are essential, I tell you.

It's not really about blaming anyone.
The Executives-in-charge seem not to be operating with any priority list.

There should be no specific age for this. I feel it should depend on some factors like:
1. How the parents want the child to blend into the society.
2. How the teenager reacts to orders and control.
3. The environment they live in.
4. The abilities of the child in question...and a host of others.
So, it is not just easy to ring a bell, DING, and let the child take decisions himself or herself.
Rather, it is a step by step decision, influenced by certain dispositions.

It's not always about the grades though.. Not every one is cut out to be a bookworm or grades freak..
He who gets the C's in class may eventually go on to get the real A's in life.
If the grades aren't working out despite the input, try considering improving other aspects like hobbies and talents.

It is very important.
Although not all families are comfortable with discussing such issues amongst themselves.
