Meeting late fiery human rights activists, Gani Fawehinmi was a morale booster for the former presidential candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Nuhu Ribadu, he admitted yesterday adding that Mr. Fawehinmi’s mentorship helped him in shaping his ideological stance. Mr. Ribadu, who spoke at a mentoring programme organised by the Group of Patriotic Corpers (GPC) and #AdoptATweep in Abuja at the weekend, said he meet the reputable lawyer while serving as a pupil lawyer at the military Special Investigative Panel during the short-lived Buhari/Idiagbon regime. Late Mr. Fawehinmi, according to Mr. Ribadu, provided him with critical advices and mentorship lessons that continue to serve as his guiding lights to this day. He said it was from Mr. Fawehinmi that he renewed his resolve to continue to fight the cause of the poor and subsequently join the Nigerian Police Force. He therefore underscored the importance of mentoring young ones which, he said, could surpassed what one can learn from formal school. “A Chinese saying has it that discussing with an experienced person is worth more than 10 years of education. It is therefore good to always relay one’s experience to the younger ones,” Mr. Ribadu said. The former EFCC chairman admonished the youth to make right choices at early stage of their career by choosing to live a humble and exemplary life than a life of material accumulation which, he said, does not guarantee eternal happiness if acquired through corrupt means. He also asked youths not to lose hope of rebuilding the country but said they required strong will and incorruptible life to salvage the nation, adding that the resolve has to be made at an early age. ” My success at the EFCC, especially in resisting all tempting offers and calls to bend the rules was a direct result of my bow from when I was like you that I will never be corrupt. “I resented corruption not by lips of mouth but by personal conduct. I refused to be bribed or compromised throughout my public service career. Yet, I am ever happy with myself. I have no regrets that I don’t have mansions all over the world or own a private jet. I derive happiness from contentment and the feeling that what I possess are things I genuinely earn. You can make similar resolve today,” he said. Late Lagos Lawyer and fiery human rights activist, Gani Fawehinmi Mr. Ribadu charged the youths to conduct an audit of their abilities before making career choices, which is a life time decision. “Therefore, if you really wish to be a home-builder, one possessed by a desire to change our realities, then you have to conduct a self-assessment. Look into your strengths and weaknesses and then take decision on whether to follow the left or the right path that leads to integrity, self-satisfaction and reputation that could outlive generations.” Source http://premiumtimesng.com/?p=142957 2 Likes |

The students created the prototype as their final year project. Two 500-level students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ilorin, Ali David and Patrick Effiong, have constructed an aircraft prototype. The duo told journalists in Ilorin that they had nurtured the passion to construct the aircraft when they were in 100 level, adding that it was now their final year project. Mr. David noted that many of his colleagues were skeptical when they first broached the subject, adding that they were not deterred by the challenges they faced. “What we are actually working on is a machine that will lift up itself through the law of aerodynamics and having an engine, a propeller and the fuselage,” he added. Mr. Effiong, on his part, said: “With some of our lecturers backing us, we were motivated; we decided that we can carry out the construction. “Ali brought the idea to me that he had the dream of constructing an aircraft, but I didn’t really buy the idea then and I thought he had forgotten about it. “So when we got to 400 level, he raised the idea again.’’ Also speaking with newsmen, the project supervisor, Tajudeen Ajiboye, said the students had demonstrated a high level of intellectualism inspite of the challenges they faced. Mr. Ajiboye, who said the students were faced with the problems of materials and manpower at the initial stage, commended them for their tenacity to accomplish the project. President Goodluck Jonathan’s recent Facebook claim about three weeks of uninterrupted electricity supply to Anambra state capital, Awka, is nowhere near the reality, residents of the town have told PREMIUM TIMES in a quick rebuttal that again casts doubt on the president’s public claim about his achievements. Residents from several streets of Awka said while power supply had improved in their areas in the past couple of weeks, the difference was fairly minimal to be regarded as “steady” since interruptions have continued. “They give us light mostly in the day time and take it during the night when we need it most,” said Mike Nweke, who lives along Zik Avenue, and runs a shop at Eke Awka market. “In spite of the fact that our NEPA credit finishes within days of recharge. There is nothing to celebrate. Four other residents of the area corroborated that claim of improved power supply over the past three weeks, but they all added that the usual power failure persisted. At Ifite Awka, mostly habited by students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, residents said the only difference they witnessed in recent weeks has been the stoppage of the power rationing called “One day ON, one day OFF”, which makes light available to different areas on alternate days. “Before they use to share light for us and that made us to be having light once in two days but now that has become history because they are now giving us light everyday though the power supply has never been stable as claimed by the president,” one student said. The responses, randomly drawn from several parts of Awka, particularly refuted the president’s claim about “uninterrupted public power” in a Facebook comment on Thursday. In the unusual post, which the president said was meant to “drown out the unacceptable negatives in the polity”, Mr. Jonathan highlighted the appointment by telephone company, MTN, of its first Nigerian Chief Executive, as the proceed of his administration’s resolve to build local content; and spoke of steady electricity in Awka, and the registration of the new party, All Progressives Congress, as a reflection of the success of his government’s reforms. “The second occurrence is the celebration by the city of Awka, in Anambra state of three weeks of uninterrupted public power supply and counting,” Mr. Jonathan wrote. “More cities will soon be able to have such celebrations because the Roadmap to Power Sector Reforms is having the desired effects with almost all of Nigeria’s electricity Distribution companies (Discos) and Generating companies (Gencos) now in private hands as I promised on the 26th of August 2010 in Lagos when I launched the Power Roadmap.” For a president whose past claims on achievements, particularly about power supply had all turned out fictitious, and were roundly refuted by Nigerians, his remarks about Anambra state immediately stirred swift reactions from Nigerians. Readers who responded to PREMIUM TIMES’ call on Facebook, asking Awka residents for response, provided mixed opinion of the situation in the commercial state. While a majority denied the president’s claim, a few admitted the situation had improved. A respondent, Oraneto Ndubuisi, affirmed, “For real, four weeks now”, while another, Toby Obaji, interjected, “Wait a minute, are you guys trying to say three hours or three weeks. Well, if its three hours …yes, sometimes. If you actually mean three weeks, then it’s not this Awka, might be the Awka in Japan.” Other residents from different parts of the town, interviewed by our reporter in Awka, returned a verdict that largely disclaimed Mr. Jonathan’s. At Ogechuckwu Street, five people interviewed said there was no difference in power supply in the area over the past three months because they still used generators at night. At Emma-Nnaemeka Street, residents also denied there was stable power supply in the area as claimed by the president. “Enough of that lie and those people presenting those lies to Mr. President should stop it,” one man, visibly angered by the question, said. http://premiumtimesng.com/?p=142187 |

The Federal Government has set up three committees to fast-track the privatisation of 10 power generation plants and 11 power distribution companies under the National Independent Power Plants (NIPP) project. The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) and the Niger Delta Holding Power Company (NDPHC) set up the committees on Friday. Presenting the joint memo from NDPHC and Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), the Managing Director of NDPHC, James Olotu, sought the ratification by the joint Board of NDPHC and NCP of the divestment of 80 per cent shares of the company and the list of nominees for the road shows in Lagos, London, Hong Kong and New York. The joint memo also sought the approval of some committees that will handle the sale of the power plants in line with due process and laid down procedures. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/138059-nigeria-sets-up-three-committees-to-fast-track-sale-of-power-generation-distribution-plants.html The three committees formed are the Joint Evaluation Committee whose work is to evaluate the expression of interest for the NDPHC power plants; the Joint Transaction Committee of Niger Delta Power Company headed by the Managing Director of the Company; and the Joint Technical Committee headed by Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State. This is even as the Federal Government commended the management of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) for successfully completing the building of National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) power plants across the country. Presiding over the joint meeting of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company and National Council on Privatisation (NCP) today at the State House, Abuja, Vice President Namadi Sambo gave the commendation, saying “the manner in which the management of the NDPHC handled the successful completion of the ten power plants is commendable.” Mr. Sambo said President Jonathan will from henceforth commence the commissioning of the power plants, noting that the issue of gas availability has been resolved, remaining transmission. He also noted that before the end of 2014 the power sector is expected to generate 20,000MW of electricity. He advised that everything should be done in accordance with the law and guidelines by the experts, adding that the sale of the produce would be used to bridge the gap in transmission and distribution in the sector. In his remark, Governor Suswam noted that the Lagos Raodshow was very successful and marked a good beginning as many investors indicated interest in the power sector. He said the aforementioned joint committees have prominent personalities. He also said a final approval of what the three committees had done would be given by a board of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company and National Council on Privatisation.

Gone are the good days when people treat Corpers with courtesy and sometimes feed them free of charge. These days, it is common to see young guys serving Nigeria under the NYSC scheme struggling to “survive” at their place of assignment. Amenbovillage observed that help is no long as it used to be. The crux of the matter is that today people don’t trust easily. Wearing an NYSC gear is no longer enough to be trusted. And a male Corper worsened this fear recently when he was caught… The 26yrs old Corper, identified as Amadi Stanley, was said to have taken a 15-year-old girl, whose parent were friendly with him, saying they were going on a stroll. The girl, a secondary school student, wanted to return home after they’ve covered some distance, but the Corper refused and they started “dragging”. Before the teenage girl could know what was happening Corper Amadi was on top of her and he was said to have forcefully had carnal knowledge of the girl. She was later rescued from him and he was arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Force in Ede, Osun State, where he is posted to. Corper Amadi was charged before an Osogbo Senior Magistrates court on Tuesday where he was charged for counts relating to abduction and rápe. Prosecutor, Meriti Wilson, told the court that Amadi committed the offence on May 24 at about 6:30pm. When the charges were read to him, Corper Amadi pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail for N100,000 and the Magistrate adjourned the case to July 22, 2013, for trial. source http://amenbovillage.com/nysc-member-caught-raping-a-female-student/

Nigerians may not watch Wednesday's 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier in Nairobi due to rights issues. Officials at Nigeria's state-owned television network NTA told KickOffNigeria.com that the rights holders are asking for an astronomical €400 000 broadcast fee to carry the game. "It is outrageous! That is an obscene amount of money for just two hours of live transmission and at very short notice," an NTA official said. He added that the network is still in negotiations to review the fee downwards. "If we can get it down, and bring in other stations like AIT, and so on, we may still be able to bring the game to Nigerians," he said. source http://www.kickoff.com/news/34827/the-nigeria-v-kenya-2014-world-cup-qualifier-may-not-be-televised With just hours to go until the game, that is looking like a long shot |

[quote author=berem]Am sorry to say this. Igbos are the most stubborn set of humans on planet earth! How can people value their business more than their lives? If 2 Hausa men are killed in igbo land today, you will see how Hausas will leave their businesses and run back to their states pending when things calm down or they might not even return. But igbos will rather remain in volatile areas and get killed. I won't be surprised if igbos still reside in SOE states. ebere m na emere umu igbo! This is so sad smh.... Is nt easy to come back home and settle down, did you have anything to offer wen they comeback? |
