How Ndigbo Can Break Free From Their Victim Mentality Syndrome By Churchill Okonkwo.

I don’t know about you, but it looks bizarre to me anytime I come across phrases like these on social media: “Igbo man achieves…”; “Igbo student ….”; “Igbo woman became…”; “Igbo man this, Igbo man that”. Suddenly, accomplishments by Nigerians across the globe are being zeroed down to tribe by a section of the country. What could be the reason behind this? To feel superior? To feel good? To show “them” that you are excelling?

Whatever you think it is, reducing the nationality of an individual’s achievement to the lowest decimal possible - one's tribe - to me does not elevate nor strengthen such honors. Rather than strength, it all points to something strange, a feeling of inferiority and fear. I thus see such actions as unconscious acts of perpetuating a self-imposed and unwarranted sense of marginalization – a victim mentality syndrome that only reinforces negative attitudes and isolation.

Negative attitude is poisonous and can negatively impact the way we feel and act. It is therefore extremely important that Ndigbo should switch to a positive frequency in order to reshape our realities and thoughts. That’s why I am here to let you know that it’s time to let go and start with a new thinking.

But first, here’s how to know that you have this victim mentality syndrome as Onye Igbo. You feel like every other tribe has it so easy in Nigeria except you; you always feel like it’s not my fault, they did it to me. You want to be a martyr, so you confront the security forces to be killed; you are addicted to imaginary misery and drama; blaming Buhari for everything improves your state of mind; you never feel responsible for your negative behavior; you only focus on negative events and disappointments, so even when Boko Haram are being decimated and massive corruption exposed, you keep focusing on real and imaginary marginalization; you display self-defeating, almost masochistic behavior – I am miserable therefore, I am. You know yourself now.

For Ohaneze Ndigbo that is meeting tomorrow at Owerri, here is the deal; you should make it clear to Ndigbo that the traits listed above are not an excuse to embrace a victim mentality. Tell Ndigbo that they should not be steering the pirate ship into the same iceberg that sank their father’s ship. After accepting that something shitty happened to them (whatever it is), tell Ndigbo that they need to embrace a new and fearless chapter. So, here are the bold steps to release ourselves from our victim mentality syndrome.

Stop asking why.
You will only end up torturing yourself more with that painful loop of questions without answers. It should have been that simple from day one. There will never be a satisfactory answer or gratifying analysis as to why Nigerian government will not “let you go”. So, stop playing the “poor me” card. Take responsibility. Wise up your life, there is really no way around it. Stop committing acts that will make you a martyr. The world is not paying attention.

Ask courageous questions.
I completely agree that space must be given for the “marginalized” to express themselves. But by clinging to the victim mentality, you get lost in the funk of sadness and self-pity. You fail to take action and exempt yourselves from the risks of failure. You carry an extra baggage. The fact is that surviving and thriving in multiethnic and religions society like Nigeria is not easy, but one need not assume a victim mentality in relation to it. So, ask courageous questions. How can we as a people move forward from here? Can you grab some power at state level of government and start setting example of what live will be like in the land of the rising sun?

Name your prize.
If what it will take to rid yourself of victim mentality is to have an Igbo sounding name as Nigerian President in 2019, start planning for it now by forging alliances with other political forces. If, on the other hand, ‘restructuring’ Nigeria will make you feel ‘rich’, take responsibility by strategizing on how to elect public office holders that will champion that cause from the local to the federal level. That’s how to take responsibility. Not this present display of victim mentality syndrome.

Unfortunately, your pro-Biafran movement is full of unhappy and confused people who keep telling you that the only way to achieve ‘sovereignty’ is by airlifting all your kinsmen to Mars. But what if you start with what you can grab immediately while you wait for the airlifting? You can shoot for political power base in the entire Southeastern Nigeria starting with the “Biggest Price” – The Anambra State Government House come 2017. The election is more than one year away, so you have more than enough time to start planning.

Forgive.
The most important thing you need to do is to forgive. Forgive the Hausas for the atrocities leading to the civil war. Forgive the Yorubas for betraying you during the Biafran civil war. Forgive the Niger Deltans for conniving with the Nigerian government to effectively block the Biafran enclave. After all, we are all over Southwest, North, and South-south working as professionals, doing business and prospering. By not forgiving them, you are bound to them by an emotional link that is stronger than uncooked ponmo (‘kanda’). Do you know the best thing about forgiveness? It does not only release the other person, it also sets you free from agony and unnecessary pain.

Finally, give yourself a break. Take a break from social media and all the junk websites that have kept you on the edge with fake stories of how the whole world (except Mugabe, Putin and Trump) has turned against you.

I know it’s hard getting out of the victim mentality syndrome but, you should be nice to yourself. All it will take to free yourself from the victim mentality syndrome is to remain an Okonkwo. Yes, Okonkwo! That’s who we are as Ndigbo - outgoing fearless, hardworking with reasonable sense of integrity. And that is freedom!

What do I feel about all these? I feel the pan igbo online agitators or historians are looking for ways of validating Igbo ownership and grips on Porthacourt and its territory. While I cannot for a fact dispute or accept their claims, its pertinent that they know that United Nations article recognizes human right which include the right of tribe that owns Porthacourt to be what and who they want to be.
That a group speaks igbo language doesn't necessarily make them Igbo. For example, people in Southern Kaduna speaks Hausa being close to and has acculturated into Hausa doesn't make them Hausa, so, that basis is completely wrong.

I honestly think the igbo country will be determined by what groups stand to gain if they should be part of it and not by a forcefully coercing people because they dress or speak igbo, that's will be a reflection of lack of cosmopolitan civilization in that part of the country.

What makes a race or ethnic group superior? Without any unreasonable debate I think such people will have with them at least 200 years or more of civilization, empire, human advancements, cosmopolitan culture and linguistics, what do writers of those books had to show for it?

The truth is that in the last 600 years in the areas now called Nigeria, only three major empires lasted into the 20th century; The Kanen Borno, Oyo and Benin Empires.
There are smaller kingdoms though like Tsoede, Jukun. I believe superior people should demonstrate superior organization, governance, commerce, historical relics and linguistic standardization.
In the event of a Nigeria disintegration which I do not hope for really, the Igbo may find it incapable of earning the trust of their neighbors and actually cone up with a much smaller country except they wish to wage decades of protracted wars that may work against it in the long run.

igbo superiority should be showing in today's Nigeria by leading in cutting edge technologies, medical advancements, political sagacity, cosmopolitan developments and in faith or religious evolutions, alas these aren't so, so on what basis is igbo superiority based? Africans are struggling and its a general stuffs, the igbo aren't better and in fact, have political structural challenges and are in most cases find it difficult to evolve a communal based human developmental ideas over individuals desires, now that's an African problem and igbo is not exempted may be even in a deeper quagmire.

While i was growing up and even till date, my father never ever told us anything about Ikwerre rather he always admonished us to make sure we excel in our various career, he encouraged us to keep improving our education up to PHD level. It is rather shameful that while our fathers are urging us to excel in life, Ikwerre fathers were/are busy poisoning their children's heart with satanic lies about the igbos. What a shame. Little wonder Ikwerre youths are so lazy while cultism thrives amongst them. Cultists camps are scattered in various parts of the states and these foolish youths are killing themselves almost on daily basis. Sometimes one wonders whether these youths are under a generational curse.
I cant imagine myself wasting my precious time to tell my children negative things about Ikwerre or any tribe when i have more important info to give them so that they can excel in life.

Please allow me to share my legal opinion via this medium.

The CJ is supposed to swear Ogah in for two reasons:

1. The State High Court lacks powers to halt or suspend a Federal High Court Decision. There is no order for Stay of Execution from the Appeal Court and so there is no reason for her to ignore the action of INEC which she is duty bound to conclude. She is therefore currently in Contempt of a substantive court order.

2. Ogah currently has the certificate of return issued by INEC. Ikpeazu, without such a valid certificate of return now becomes a persona non grata in the governors office and is an inteloper and usurper. The Governor-Elect, Ogah, must be sworn in with immediate effect.

Now to the main issue. Does INEC have the right to issue certificate to Ogah without waiting for an appeal? And why should that be valid?

Fine.

Ogah took three people to court (three defendants); INEC, PDP, and Ikpeazu.

The court said Ogah should have been the governor elect and ruled that he must be immediately sworn in right away.

Out of the three defendants, one decided "I won't appeal, I will agree and obey"..that was INEC.

The other two (Ikpeazu and PDP said they won't agree, they will appeal)

Fine.

But if INEC refuses to appeal, then that judgment is now binding on INEC to invalidate whatever election announcement was made in April 2015 and give it to Ogah. So, INEC, having stopped their own disagreement with the plaintiff, now have every right to comply with the judgment without looking to the Court of Appeal.

Now that Ogah has become the new Governor Elecct. It becomes sensible for Ikpeazu to march to the court of appeal, dragging both OGAH and INEC as Respondents..and even PDP who naturally should also follow INEC in accepting their new candidate...Ogah.

If the CJ refuses to swear the man INEC has now accepted as being anointed, then she is claiming to be loyal to Ikpeazu instead of to whoever has an authentic certificate of return.

Mind you, INEC has every right by law to withdraw a certificate of return from anyone if found to have been in error, and it is your duty to go to court, but that does not invalidate or delay whatever INEC deems fit in the eyes of the law.

The CJ either obeys or risks being petitioned.

Let justice be served no matter whose ox is goard. My problem with this judgement is that a criminal case of this magnitude has been established but there is no clause for immediate prosecution. If a poor man defraud a govt by not paying his taxes heaven will let loose. #justicemustbeserved.

It is believed by some that the current Igbos in parts of Imo and Abia once inhabited the current Cross River area, but were gradually pushed into their current area by the current occupants of the Cross Rivers area, he(Abagworo) was probably insinuating that Ikwerre ancestors were part of that great Igbo cross riverian migration, along side their "Isoma" neighbors.

How exactly is that possible? Do all Igbo people speak same dialect? Which dialect of Igbo was forced on Ikwerre? Oguta dialect of Nzimiro? Onitsha dialect of Zik? Ohuhu Umuahia dialect of Okpara? Idemili dialect of Achebe? Ehugbo dialect of Ibiam?

Does it even occur to the Ikwerre that Igbos speak in distinct but closely related dialects, that Igbo Izugbe is an artificial language created for Igbo language studies only but not spoken by any Igbo clan?


If you have any bit of rationality and any iota of logical thinking, you would know that your parents were pathological liars, and that no such things as lynching an Ikwerre man in PortHarcourt for speaking Ikwerre dialect occured. Izugbe is wat doz fools call igbo LANGUAGE!
