Drama, as Okiro is named new Police IG
By Kingsley Omonobi
Posted to the Web: Saturday, June 02, 2007

ABUJA — PRESIDENT  Umar Musa Yar’Adua, yesterday, appointed Mr. Mike Okiro as 13th Inspector-General of Police. Until his appointment, the new IGP  was the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of Works.

The appointment of Okiro was confirmed via a statement signed by Musa Aduwak, Senior Special Assistant, Media to the President. Okiro’s selection as IGP  followed a day of drama regarding the refusal of his predecessor, Mr. Sunday Ehindero to hand over to his former number two, DIG Ogbonna Onovo on the  grounds that he (Ehindero) was not authorized to do so.

Things dramatically changed when Ehindero was later called from the presidency and directed to go and hand over the instruments of office to Onovo because there  cannot be a vacuum in the Police chain of command. But no sooner had Onovo received the instruments of office from Ehindero as acting IG that the President was  said to have made his decision based on advice of his security chiefs and kitchen cabinet.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that the high-wire lobbying and pressure mounted on President Yar’Adua to announce a Police boss from the North since former  President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed the IGP that worked with him from the South-West, tilted the appointment in favour of Okiro.
Onovo was said to have lost out in the last minute when powerful forces were said to have argued that giving such a sensitive position of the number one security  organization to an Igbo man, could be dangerous.

The new IG who hails from Rivers state, is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies and was at one time, Lagos State Police  Commissioner and DIG Operations before he was made DIG Works, the number three position in the force.

As an Igbo, I should have been sad about these discriminations, but somehow I am happy instead that Nigeria keeps pushing certain component parts to the wall. When the corner becomes too tight, such people bounce back to gain some space. This is 2007 and not 1967. Meanwhile ONOVO should resign.

that could be true 75% of achievements by ibo but if you have the opportunity to meet any one of them ,they will tell you they could have never be successfull without the political will and that credit goes to the former president who is a yoruba man,so tribe or no tribe we would never get anywhere unless the will to make things work is there and my hope is that the new president have the will and determination too
I like your line of argument. But isn't surprising that the Yoruba ministers could not achieve anything when their brother was a president. For example, look at the CBN under Sanusi (Yoruba) and compare it to now. Does that by any chance confirm the Yoruba penchant for incompetence and mediocrity?

Ige’s Murder: How Ehindero Used Corporal To Deceive Nigerians

By Simon Ateba

Controversial Lagos lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has revealed how Mr. Sunday Ehindero, immediate past Inspector General of Police, attempted to fool Nigerians by blindfolding a police corporal who he alleged exposed the killers of the late Chief Bola Ige, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

Addressing journalists in Lagos yesterday, Keyamo said he recognised the hoodlum paraded by Ehindero alongside five other alleged suspected killers of Bola Ige.

He identified the hooded man as a police corporal at the Police Headquarters, Abuja, adding that he knew his name and would disclose this later for the world to know.

Keyamo rejected the fresh disclosure of the police about the identity of those that killed Ige, saying it is unbelievable that an ex-convict could walk into a police station six years after the murder of Ige and claim that he knew the killers and the police believed him just like that.

He said it was a shame that the police believed the story of an ex-convict.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Kehinde Enifeni, wife of Moshood Enifeni, the suspected drug baron the police claimed to have masterminded the killing of Ige from prison, has described the trauma she faced when she saw her husband paraded on television.

Kehinde, in an exclusive interview yesterday with P.M.News in Lagos, described as irresponsible the last act of Ehindero as the police IG by parading her husband as the mastermind of Bola Ige’s death.

“My husband and myself have been married for 24 years and we have four children. Since he was paraded as the killer of Bola Ige, I stopped going to shop and my children would no longer sleep and study in peace.

“My husband is the breadwinner of the family and his prolonged detention is traumatic,” she said.

Kehinde in tears, further explained that her husband was innocent, adding that he cannot even kill a fly.

“My husband does not know anything about Bola Ige’s death. He has never killed anybody in his life. They just want to set him up. It’s obvious to all Nigerians that he is not the killer of Bola Ige. Because we don’t have money, they just thought they can accuse us wrongly,” she said.

She further explained that her husband had faced drug charges before, and after pleading guilty, he was released. He never had any criminal record, either before or after the drug issue.

A family friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confined that Moshood Enifeni did not kill Bola Ige.

She said that he is a very calm and patient man who does not go to bars or clubs.

“He is a very good person. His wife is my friend and I have known Moshood for many years,” she said.

The families of the other suspects Ehindero paraded last week, have equally carpeted the former police boss, describing him as a liar since their relatives that were paraded had nothing to do with Ige’s murder in 2001.

What is UniAD?

As far as any reasonable and unbiased person knows, no Nigerian university apart from Lagos Business School also known as Pan African university, is worth anything. In Africa, OAU, the so-called best in Nigeria is number 49 or so, far behind universities in Kenya, Ghana etc. So what are you boasting about, local champion?

By your logic, it means that it is ''expo'' that Yorubas need to get admitted? BTW, to alleviate your ignorance, the best university in Nigeria is Pan African University managed by Prof pat Utomi Also, check the good students in those universities in Yorubaland. They are mostly Igbo. Yoruba students do not study outside of their place. Hence they are local champions.

Onovo takes over as IGP

LUKKEY ABAWURU

BARRING any last minute hitch, Deputy Inspector General of Police, (DIG) Mr Ogbonnaya Okechukwu Onovo would today formally take over the mantle of leadership of the Police force as Acting Inspector General of Police pending his imminent appointment as substantive police boss.

This follows the retirement of former police boss, Mr Sunday Ehindero after extended mandatory years in service. Ehindero would be pulled out today in Abuja with full honour.

Onovo, who is the most senior policeman in the country, was directed to take over from his boss by President Umaru Yar’Adua.

With the appointment, even in acting capacity, Onovo becomes the first Igboman to ascend the post since independence.

The Enugu-born outstanding policeman was enlisted into the force as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in 1977.

He attended Transport School in Abeokuta from 1960-66 and later proceeded to Ezzi Boys High School Abakaliki from 1967-71 and finally transferred to May Knoll College, Ogoja, Cross River State.

In 1973 he gained admission into University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and graduated in 1976.

He enrolled into the Police in 1977 and rose to commander, Police Mobile Force Squadron from 1980-84, Assistant Force Secretary, 1986 and Staff Officer, Kam Salem House, Lagos 1987-92.

He rose to the post of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Edo State and was later transferred to Adamawa State.

In 1997, Onovo was appointed the Commissioner of Police, incharge of Ogun State, from where he was appointed as chairman of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in 1998. He held the post briefly before he was elevated to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) and later to Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) on March 6, 2000.

With his experience in the force, spanning over three decades, Onovo is expected to turn around the force to enable it regain lost glories.

However, the appointment of Onovo as Acting IGP has been widely commended within and outside the force.

For instance, many rank and file, in Lagos were seen clicking glasses in celebration of the appointment.

One of them, a Sergeant, who pleaded anonymity said "Onovo is the Messiah we have been waiting for, he is one of the best cops in Africa, we urge Yar’Adua to quickly confirm his appointment.

In his own remarks, chairman of concerned youths, a pressure group, Mr Chris Orji said the appointment of Onovo shows that Yar’Adua is truly a listening government.

"We are happy that Onovo is appointed at last, we are praying to God to touch the minds of government to immediately confirm him to enhance rapid turn around in the force".

Zoning: Yar’Adua under pressure
From JACOB EDI, Abuja

There are indications that the recent zoning formula adopted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may have put the newly inaugurated President Umar Musa Yar’Adua under pressure.
Accordingly, President Yar’Adua was headed towards convening a fresh national caucus of the party. The venue and date of meeting was not clear at the time of this report as President Yar’Adua is said to be getting set to travel to his home state, Katsina, for the weekend.

Presidency sources hinted Daily Sun that some members of the PDP, especially those from the South East, have expressed serious reservations over the zoning of the national chairman of the party to the South East.

At the time of this report, no fewer than four people have shown interest in taking over from Ahmadu Ali. They include incumbent PDP National Secretary, Ojo Maduekwe; two former presidential aspirants, Owelle Rochas Okorocha and Gen Ike Nwachukwu as well as immediate past governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Sam Egwu.
Shortly before his departure, Obasanjo presided over the PDP national caucus meeting that reportedly zoned the seat of the national chairman of the party to the South East.

Yar’Adua, it was learnt, had argued that the South East deserves more than chairmanship of the PDP. Sources said he canvassed that the Speaker of the House of Representatives be zoned to the South East.

It was learnt that Yar’Adua wants to bring up the reservations of the South East before another national caucus meeting to look into the question of zoning again, with a view to restrategizing on the zoning formula.

One of the contenders to the post of the chairmanship of the party, Owelle Okorocha told Daily Sun that there was the need to re-consider the zoning arrangement that gives only the party chairmanship to the South East.

Insisting that he is eminently qualified to lead the party to greater heights by reconciling all the aggrieved members, Okorocha said the party chairmanship position has no constitutional role.
"If you say zoning the chairmanship to the South East is that they have given us something, then it’s not fair. As PDP chairman, you are talking about the Igbo in PDP. But with a position like Speaker of the House of Representatives, you are talking about the whole nation," he reasoned.

Okorocha, who came second in the PDP convention, said he has the national spread and acceptability to lead the party. He had served as a Special Adviser to former President Obasanjo on inter-party relation as well as coordinator, National Peace Forum.

Yeaterday, there was one Yoruba nairalander called Fekuti running his mouth about how Igbo should not be trusted. I guess that thread has been yanked off by admin. In it I told him/her that for every Igbo who is bad (and there are indeed many) there are at least 10 bad Yoruba. I asked her to mention a single notable Igbo killed by political assasins (they are so few that you cannot even remember them, only one actually, in 1999 called OGB-Imo state). He could not remember any himself. I gave him at least three names (Bola Ige, Funsho williams and Daramola- there are so many, I do not remember their names) Hardly did I finish this when news of the assasination of Agagus's former CSO came out. You can imagine that inspite of all the bad publicity from Anambra politics, nobody has really been reported felled by political opponents

Now, people, who are more of the killers and untrustworthy people in Nigeria?

You stinky swine, Majamaja. What is the connection between politics and Igbo high rate of acquisition of land in Abuja? Is it the fault of Igbos that Yorubas prefer to do weekly Owambe and satisfy their drooping libido via marrying manifold wives (eg Abiola, Obasanjo etc) with borrowed capital instead of investing same in Abuja land? Nigerian presidency is turn turn. It will get to Igbos turn before any Yoruba presidency again.
