However, they are lucky medicine has global mobility and our official language is English. But this belief that certain professions which cater solely to the Nigerian market should be highly paid is misplaced.
As for nursing, it has never been a lucrative career in most of parts of the world. Nigeria is a poor country no reach your thieving politicians |

spiceadole: Relocation requires a lot of money. There are foreign professional exams to write and pass home and abroad,in other to get licence to practise abroad. And with the extremely high exchange rate plus meagre salaries that doctors earn in Nigeria,it's not easy for many except the few who have financial support from their families and other sources.
If I hadn't relocated about 5 years ago,It would have been almost impossible now. it'll take longer but still not impossible |

Porksupplyib: Can you define the "NOT THAT WIDE"?
Even if it is 10k difference, we all know the benefits of being a government staff far outweighs that of being in the private sector.
Moreover how many big private hospitals are we talking about here? Very few. And how many private hospitals are in the country? Thousands. So what are we talking about? government pays better in the long run not in the beginning, the problem is no one is staying long enough to care , doctors just want to save for about a year or at most a year and a half and leave |
Health › Re: LUTH Reacts To Reported Shutdown Of Its Wards by docsholz(m): 9:30am On Dec 03, 2023 |
Porksupplyib: It is undeniable that we are losing Doctors faster than we are making them as a result of the "japa" trend. The CMD didn't deny that. However it is a big lie and an exaggeration that LUTH closed wards because of lack of doctors and nurses. Haba!
Before that will happen, it will mean every private hospital in the country won't have Doctors again. Do you know why? Because the government pays doctors far better than private hospitals.
Any advert for position in government hospitals would be swiped up in no time by ready hands who are yet to leave the country.
At the end of the day, everyone wants better pay. That is why skilled labour's including doctors are relocating abroad. That is the very same reason why doctors in private hospitals will tender their resignation letter fast and pick up jobs in hospitals like LUTH before they close down wards. the difference in pay between private and government hospitals is not that wide, some big private hospitals even pay better, this isn't 10 years ago |

SmartPolician: Life is much cheaper in Nigeria than in the United States, so I feel it's unfair to compare what Nigérian doctors earn here to what US doctors are paid.
For instance, our annual rent in Nigeria is equal one month rent in America. However, that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be paid a little higher than what they are paid now. My good man, it might interest you to know that we have specialist that can't afford 2007 lexus, the pay is too bad even Ghana isn't this bad |

infolekan: It’s not even fake news. It’s just nonsense interpreted with biased eyes for most people. Canada needs your school accredited with over $10,000 to be able to apply directly for training. India paid for almost all the schools in India starting from next year. No part of the article talked about professionalism or being better. Just that a country has paid that huge amount and someone here is talking about Indians being better. When Nigerian doctors are almost everywhere flourishing and leading. The problem now is the Nigerian government won't pay, they'll see this as a way to keep doctors in Nigeria by force rather than improve working conditions |
Health › Re: Nigerian Doctors Relocating To Sierra Leone, Gambia To Earn $4,000 Wages, CMDs by docsholz(m): 5:16pm On Aug 31, 2023 |
modernWays: You are still saying the same thing over and over again. The question is, what is average cost of obtaining the kind of quality medical training in Gambia that Nigeria doctors received here in Nigeria that made Gambian government to offer such pays? What is the comparative cost of living and earning in Gambia? They are not fools, they know what they are paying for. Besides, if such skill/experience is that cheap to obtain, they would've prefer to train their citizens and pay less(if what they are paying is so far above cost of living).
As regards to "our collective money" you keeps repeating", let me break it down in a lay man understanding, for instance, if government were to subsidise education of each student with 50k, the cost of doing the same for medical students would be 500k each. Government can easily gives the 50k as it was givien to others and allow you to fund your education but they cant, because they knew that 98% of the applicants would not be able to afford it, which may eventually affect quantity of doctors needed in our hospitals. As for the employment opportunities and wages, Nigeria produced too much Doctors on the average, due to the fact that the cost of training are relatively peanut compared to their counterparts abroad. Nigeria too can comfortably pay her consultant $4000 if you are paying the value of your training fees and the masses are also paying the value of health care services. Alot of Nigerians are quick to condemn government but fail to realise that we too have alot to do to fix the system. If you can't appreciate a system that trained you for a peanut because you feel it is our collective money, you don't have moral right to blame our corrupt leaders who might also feel the same and loot (because they spent too to acquire the positions).
Let me cut it short and ask you few questions;
1. If I may ask, why do you think government subsidise medical students training cost with 500k, while others are only entitle to 50k?
2. Why should doctors be paying in dollars, while we spend Naira in Nigeria. Can they spend the naira where they were paying in Dollars?
3. If medical training can be easily funded by everyone in the said developed countries, why do they still need poor trained ones from developing countries?
Note: I am not trying to defend our corrupt leaders, all of us know they are not doing well, my point is that, where is humanity when we keep chasing money. Besides, doctors are not doing badly in Nigeria, it is greed and hunger to live large that made alot of them abandoned their jobs in Nigeria. A young Nigerian Medical officer can not buy 2006 Toyota Corolla even if he/she saved their salary for a whole year without touching it, you have got to be joking to say Nigerian doctors are not doing badly |
