•Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, may now finance party Fresh woes may be on the way for President Goodluck Jonathan following his ill fated re-election bid. Most of the governors elected on the platform of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are understood to be plotting to sideline him in their plan to rebuild the party. https://thenationonlineng.net/new/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Jonathan.jpg The governors, outgoing and surviving, want to chart a new course for the party with them in the driving seat. But they are also disposed to bringing in as many of those frustrated out by President Jonathan as possible, sources familiar with the development told The Nation in Abuja yesterday. Barring any alteration of their plan, the governors are expected to go full blast from May 29, hijacking the party’s affairs from President Jonathan whose tenure terminates on that day. One of those the governors have listed to bring back to the party under the reformation plan is former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who shredded his PDP membership card in the run up to the just concluded presidential election, and publicly campaigned against the President’s return to office for what he termed below par performance. Also likely to be brought in is the Second Republic Vice President Alex Ekwueme, who engineered the founding of the PDP during the late Gen Sani Abacha regime. Sources said yesterday that Friday’s public castigation of President Jonathan by Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State for causing the fall of the PDP from power in the elections, was not a co-incidence. Aliyu who doubles as Chairman, Northern Governors Forum said in Minna that President Jonathan and PDP’s defeat in the elections was caused largely by his failure to keep to the alleged single term agreement he reached with the North on assumption of office. Besides, the reformation plan is believed to have informed a recent meeting in Dutse, Jigawa State attended by Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa, ex-Governor Orji Uzor Kalu and others. “Some PDP governors, ex-governors and party leaders have started talking on how to revive the party and restore its glory as a democratic party,” said one source. “It might involve doing away with the present crop of leaders in the party to restore the PDP to its pre-1999 era. Some of the present leaders of the party have been rated as ‘mere usurpers’ because they have destroyed it. “One of the issues on the card is how to snatch the party from the grip of President Jonathan who brought in the present National Working Committee (NWC) which failed to sustain the party’s winning streak. “We will not allow any individual to own the party anymore. Even if you are a former president, you have equal right as any member of the party. This is what has made the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa to survive over the years, including the apartheid period.” Another source said: “The reformation of PDP might be pioneered by some of the founding fathers of the party like Chief Ekwueme and other members of the Board of Trustees of the party. “It might involve bringing in on board former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former national chairmen of the party, ex-governors, past elected leaders and others who can help to revitalise the party. “It is going to be a total overhaul of the party from the grassroots because we realised that we have really lost our goodwill and focus as a national party.” Alhaji Atiku has repeatedly said he has no intention whatsoever to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the PDP. He has turned down several overtures from the leadership of the PDP to jump ship including a recent personal visit to his Abuja residence by President Jonathan. The Nation also gathered that pro-Jonathan forces in the PDP are not prepared to give up. They are said to have drawn up a revival plan of their own with President Jonathan as the rallying point. They are looking up to the incoming governors of Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers states to bankroll the PDP revival project. Lagos State was in the original plan but that is no longer possible with the loss of the party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje to the APC candidate, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode . “Unless these rich states intervene in financing our party, we may not be able to fully recover,” a member of the NWC said. He added: “You know we have never been in opposition, it will be difficult to survive.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/governors-move-to-hijack-pdp-from-jonathan/ |

No fewer than 50 Nigerians have been affected by the xenophobic violence in South Africa, the President of the Nigerian Union in that country said yesterday. Mr. Ikechukwu Anyene said efforts were being made by the association to resettle those affected. He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by phone from Pretoria, South Africa, that the Nigerians were displaced at Jeppes Town, near Johannesburg. “We met about 300 Nigerians in Jeppes town, near Johannesburg, who fled for their safety and about 50 of them do not have any place to stay,” he said. “We are making arrangements with the Nigerian mission in South Africa to get them a place to stay for their safety. “The Nigerian union has also presented relief materials to those affected by the attacks and we are in touch with various branch chapters of the union in the provinces on their safety and security,’’ he said. According to him, Nigerian shops and businesses in Durban and Johannesburg have been looted and some burnt. He said that two shops belonging to Nigerians in Durban were looted and goods worth 400,000 Rand lost. “In Jeppes Town, near Johannesburg, five shops were looted and one burnt while the estimated loss is put at One million Rand. “The incidents have been reported to the police and we are still taking stock of attacks on Nigerians,’’ he said. Mr. Anyene reiterated the union’s call to the Federal Government to put more pressure on the South African government to halt the attacks. The Nigerian foreign minister had however claimed on Thursday that Nigerians had so far not been attacked, saying it would only evacuate Nigerians only if the situation gets worse. “With the discussions I have been having with Nigeria’s Head of Mission in Pretoria, no Nigerian has so far been affected,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali said Thursday in Abuja. “They informed me that they have called the Nigerian community and addressed them and told them to close their shops, stay home and keep out of trouble and obey the laws of South Africa. https://thenationonlineng.net/new/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Africa-700x407-1.jpg “They have also confirmed that the South African authority has moved in to take actions that would forestall any further disturbance in South Africa,” Mr. Wali said. “If it gets worse it is the duty of our country to make sure our people are brought back, and we are taking that duty serious. “We are not prepared to allow any of our nationals to be subjected to such inhuman treatment. “We are monitoring the situation and will now take action according to the situation that develops,” he said. |

Deny Christ or Remain Behind Bars: American Pastor Imprisoned in Iran Standing Firm Despite Threats An American pastor imprisoned in Iran is reportedly being threatened that he will not be freed from prison until he denies his faith in Christ and returns to Islam. https://christiannews.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Abedini-4-300x181.jpg As previously reported, Saeed Abedini, a former Iranian Muslim turned Christian, left Iran in 2005 and moved to the United States with his wife and two children to find religious freedom after facing conflict with authorities for planting house churches in the county. In 2012, he traveled back to Iran to build an orphanage and visit his parents—and was about to return to the states—when he was taken into custody. Abedini was later charged with threatening the national security of Iran, and for attempting to turn youth in the nation away from Islam and toward Christianity. He was then sentenced to eight years in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison, where he has spent the past two years behind bars. In November 2013, Abedini was transported to Rajai Shahr Prison, which was believed to pose an even greater threat to Abedini’s health and safety. Last May, while obtaining treatment at a local hospital for injuries sustained from beatings, he was likewise beaten and returned to prison. Abedini’s wife, Naghmeh, requested a face-to-face meeting with Barack Obama in January as he was scheduled to speak at an area university. She later told reporters that Obama advised her that “getting Saeed out is a top priority and he is working very hard to get Saeed home back to our family.” But Abedini stated this week that her husband’s situation is still very serious as guards continue to pressure him to deny Christ and return to Islam. “He has been under a lot of pressure and attack from the hardliners,” she stated in an update released by the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). “The guards have also been threatening Saeed that he will never go free and additional charges (and years) will be added to his sentence (which they have done to other Christians and fellow inmates).” “They continually threaten Saeed that the only key to his freedom is denying Christ and returning to Islam,” Abedini continued. “Saeed refuses to deny Christ and continues to be a light and witness in that dark prison.” She asked that Christians continue to pray for her husband. “These threats coupled with the fact that there have been mass executions during the last week in … prison, have really taken their toll on Saeed,” Abedini said. “He asks for prayer for continued strength.” The ACLJ urges Christians to also continue to speak out on Abedini’s behalf. “[A]s fellow U.S. citizens, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we must not be silent,” Executive Director Jordan Sekulow states. “Our government must do everything in its power to bring Pastor Saeed home. It is absolutely critical that the Obama administration and the State Department continue to demand that our innocent citizens—especially Pastor Saeed who is suffering only because of his religious beliefs—be returned home.” The U.S. will be involved with nuclear negotiations with Iran on April 21. Agents of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Ondo State Police Command on Wednesday arrested some thugs who recently attacked Deputy Governor Ali Olanusi in Akure, a police source told SaharaReporters. The source disclosed that the seven thugs were arrested in a chalet inside Government House as they reportedly were planning another attack on the deputy governor, who recently broke with Governor Olusegun Mimiko and defected from the PDP to the APC. Our source, who asked not to be named because of the "sensitivity of the case," also stated that the hoodlums had been released on the orders of Governor Mimiko, who pressured the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Isaac Eke. “The thugs were arrested inside the government VIP chalet where they were planning to coordinate another attack on the Deputy governor,” said the police source. He added: “A senior police officer from the SARS department led the team of the officers that effected the arrest of the thugs inside the Government House, VIP chalet. But, unfortunately, they have been released on the direct orders of the governor who put pressure on the state Commissioner of Police to quickly release them.” SaharaReporters exclusively obtained the names of the arrested suspects who are mostly known by their street nicknames in Akure: Dada (Alias Bullet), Aperi, Dele Origbe, Asin, Akin Iroko, Opejole, Ojule. Our source said the suspected attackers are household names in the remote area of Oke Aro in Akure. Earlier today, a member of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed the arrest of the thugs, telling SaharaReporters that the thugs were well known members of a PDP killer squad. "I knew those guys very well, especially the one bearing ‘Aperi.’ They are Mimiko's boys. Those guys are on the payroll of the governor. They use exotic cars and have big houses inside the Alagbaka GRA based on the sponsorship of the governor.” He added that the governor always used the thugs to threaten his political opponents in the state. “One of those guys eliminated the son of a popular Akure union leader," the PDP factional leader revealed. Another source in the Government House confirmed the brief detention of the suspects, but added that not all of them were caught inside the government chalet. He said two of the thugs were arrested outside the chalet. "They were waiting for the governor, when the police van drove inside the governor's compound and immediately arrested them.” The source also confirmed that the governor intervened to have the suspects released. Shortly after the attack on him, Deputy Governor Ali Olanusi exclusively told SaharaReporters that Governor Mimiko was planning to eliminate him. Meanwhile the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the state police boss, Isaac Eke, of being unduly biased by releasing the hoodlums arrested yesterday for attacking the deputy governor. In a statement, the APC’s publicity secretary, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya, to journalistson Thursday in Akure, accused Mr. Eke of ignoring orders from the police zonal command in Osogbo to investigate the attack on Mr. Olanusi. Mr. Adesanya said the people would not tolerate any form of partisanship from the police. He urged Mr. Eke to immediately ensure that the perpetrators of the attack were prosecuted. “Mr. Eke should also be reminded that we would not tolerate a bit of what Mr. Joseph Mbu, the former Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, did, in Ondo State.” He called for professionalism, adding that the era of impunity was over.
