Dehumanizing Practices to Widows in Nigeria. How are widows treated in Nigeria? Why are widowhood rites performed? What influences the practice?

In Nigeria, women are regarded as appendages to their husbands. For this reason they face a lot of inhuman traditional practices that are harmful to their health.

Widowhood is a dishonourable situation which happens to women after the death of their husbands.
And widowhood practices are the rituals that the woman has to undergo immediately after the death of her husband.

Unfortunately, in Africa and especially in Nigeria, these rituals are dehumanizing and obnoxious.

When the man dies, his wife is usually the prime suspect to his death. Thus she must undergo these rituals to prove her innocence.

But when the woman dies, her husband is given all the comfort that he needs to withstand the loss. He has free access to go wherever he wants.

Even if he is confined to the house, he has free access to move about within the house. And part of the funeral processes are funded by his inlaws.

Many people tend to be angry due one issue or the other, especially with the way things are this days.

Actually, it may result from failed relationship, business agreement, colleagues, arguments, or price negotiation.

One Igbo adage says, “If one plants yam with anger, the yam will not flourish the way it supposed to.”

Well, that is my people for you. But in reality, being provoked or angry can lead to destruction of properties if not lives.

Using myself as an example, I don’t get angry so easily but when provoked, my best remedy is to walk away from that person or premises.

I know that is not the best way to handle such condition or situation, but it works for me and I’m OK with it.

Although, my case may not actually be like yours, but someone or something must provoke you one day.

Your boy or girlfriend may get you angry in that relationship, your parents or siblings can offend you, your kids can be source of disturbance.

In Lagos state, conductor will likely annoy you, Abuja airline will delay your flight, Port Harcourt people will vex you unnecessarily, Owerri people will be showing off, go-slow or hold-up while trying to get to your destination on time and many more.

Before now, the practice of circumcision on new born baby is well pronounced. But currently, the practice, especially on the female child, is not acceptable globally.
