Please how can one access a websites API? Can it be copied or does it require the use of an application.

hmmm, your question is a bit vague, buf using a webites api, depends on what language was used, and the permissible mediums by which the API can be called (used/applied)

Seun, why can't you install an open source code like reddit.com on this platform?

I know you a Python Django person. My suggestion is, since this site nairaland.com has been stale without any modifications in years, why not try and install some open source script like Reddit.com

Reddit I think was made with Django and Node.js

So many companies are using it and they are doing well. Sites like https://www.codeschool.com/discuss/ , even https://radar.techcabal.com are using it.

This sites is becoming very boring to visit.

*My Opinion.

No offense you haven't actually stated what exactly you want or what Nairaland is lacking , "stale without any modifications" , I believe this forum is unique enough , remember its a general forum , if it was niche specific its a different issue .

All the happenings in Nigeria is really taking a toll on us even psychologically, i am a patriotic Nigerian but would you believe i just scrolled down to about number 50 without checking the ones above, and started looking for Nigeria from there,i became conscious of my subconscious condescending action thereafter. We really all have to change our thinking towards our dear country and one another regardless of tribe or religion, its one of the first steps in making this country great again .i believe we would get there. As a man thinketh so is he, a house that is divided cannot stand.God bless us all and God bless Nigeria.

Open source social network

sorry for late reply, try this oxwall.org

what script do you intend using.

Well i agree with you,i believe its the silicon valley of Naija, but to say its because of CCHUB and Andela i disagree, there are countless tech establishments and startups there who have no link whatsover with CChub and Andela (i leave in Yaba,i have worked with a team at CCHUb to create a 3D game as a character Deigner ,so i know what i am saying)

I Own A Site But Now I Want To Add A Digital Clock To My Site Which Html Code Will Be Suitable For This

Have you tried what the bros above gave ?

Fedric:
ok for someone who is new to programming and want to be both websit and software developer, what language do u advice he should learn?

First of all learn html , then proceed to css, then Javascript, then python, all the aforementioned are more like writing in plain english,it should take you about 2 weeks to be up and running not an expert(for html, css and javascript) , you can also be up and running with Python in about 2 months , then you can move unto other languages like C-based languages and Java (Learning this would be easy since you already have a considerably strong foundation.

Fedric:
the great programmers in the house, i would like to ask you all this question.

which aspect of programming pays better, website programming OR software programming?

are you a website or software developer? am a newbie like me and for the benefit of others who want to go in to programming.

That would actually be a difficult question to answer(which pays more) , but the truth is if you learn the basics of programming ground up you would be able to build a website , but if you just learn web development you might not be able to do software development ,so its just a case of learning something that would give you knowledge in both fields then you make money from both

It depends on various factors just like a boss stated above , what do you really need in the software
Are you concerned with its usability
Its responsiveness
Ease of customization ?
etc
So it depends on what feature you are more concerned about .
Some are more robust that others you could try bbpress

I would like a list of pros and cons regarding both systems before making a decision. Can you provide one?

There are a bunch of pros and cons , The only disadvantage i see in the online option is the availability of internet connection , but it has way more advantages like , it can be viewed anywhere ,your uncle can be anywhere and monitor activities etc ,

charix:
I have an uncle who's fairly new in the hotel business. Business has been going smooth since 1999(the dawn of true independence) however this current administration has been really hard on operations. In his hotels' boom period everything was run manually using record books but I convinced him things would run even more smoothly if he automates record keeping. I showed him an example of a small business I indulged in once and how I was able to see profits rise and drop without guesstimating(a trick I've seen him use one too many times). The problem now is I've no idea how to create a management system for such a huge operation. I've heard him complain of theft from employees and sometimes contractors shortchanging him with help from inside sources who "accidently" destroy physical record books. With a software based management system I foresee such problems being issues of the past.

The question now is:

1. How much would it cost to install a hotel management software system in Nigeria?

2. Is it an automated system or one has to keep inputting figures from time to time?

3. Does location matter? Can I get it cheaper for a location in Ibadan as opposed to Abuja?

There are so many things involved, but first, do you want it to be online based or offline based ?
