Politics › BBOG Disowns Fund-raising By Buhari’s Daughter, Peace Corps by donbrowser(op): 9:12pm On Oct 17, 2016
The #BringBackOurGirls coalition, has disowned a fund-raising organised in its name by President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter, Hadiza and a group, the Peace Corps of Nigeria, on Monday in Abuja.
The BBOG urged the public to disregard attempts at linking it to “this highly suspicious event.” A non-governmental organisation, run by Hadiza, Africa Support and Empowerment Initiative, had signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the ‘Chibok Girls Endowment Project’ with the the Peace Corps during which N3m was said to have been raised for the Chibok schoolgirls.
But the BBOG in a statement by Co-coordinators, Oby Ezekwesili and Aisha Yusuf, said it was not a party to the alleged fund-raising, noting that it was shocked and perplexed by the use of its name at the event.
The coalition said after 902 days of advocacy for the release of the abducted Chibok girls, it was disheartening to see attempts by external actors to use its name for selfish purposes.
The movement noted that it had carefully built its reputation as a well-organised and disciplined global movement that is completely self-funded, adding that it had contacted its lawyer, Femi Falana and was considering a response to the attempt to smear its name.
The statement read, “Following repeated enquiries from the media, we stumbled upon information of an event tagged “Official Inauguration and Signing of Memorandum of Understanding on the Chibok Girls Endowment Project” organised by the “Peace Corps of Nigeria” and “Africa Support and Empowerment Initiative”, with Hadiza Buhari-Bello.
“We are shocked, perplexed and completely dumbfounded to see the bold inscription of our hard-earned name, #BringBackOurGirls, on the event’s backdrop.
“We state categorically that we are not party to the said event and have absolutely no information of its origin. We urge the general public to disregard attempts at linking our movement to this highly suspicious event.”
“Together with our lawyers, Femi Falana & Co., we are considering a response to this attempt to smear our movement.
“We call on the general public and law enforcement agencies to be on the look-out for unscrupulous persons who may already be/are planning similar nefarious acts to deceive the local and international community.”
The group said it was a citizens’ movement and not a non-governmental organisation, hence the decision to fund its activities by sacrificial contributions of members.
“It will be highly injurious to allow it be dragged in the mud at this point. We therefore demand an immediate retraction and unreserved apology from the organizers,” it stated.

Business › Food Importation: Nigeria At Risk Of Hunger, Says Dangote by donbrowser(op): 9:04pm On Oct 17, 2016
Africa’s richest man and Chairman, Dangote Group, Mr. Aliko Dangote, says 98 per cent of all dairy products consumed in the country are imported.

He said that the nation was at the risk of hunger in the next few years if the mass food importation was not checked.

Dangote made this assertion in lagos on Monday while addressing some students of the Executive MBA class of the Lagos Business School who visited the Dangote Petrochemical Refinery.

He said, “Ninety-eight per cent of all the milk and dairy products we consume in Nigeria are imported.

“This is why Dangote Group has planned to develop dairy plants, and develop homegrown milk production, to reduce importation.

“By 2020, it is estimated that the Nigerian population would have risen to between 207 million and 210 million. If we do not make efforts to grow and process our own foods, God forbid, we will go hungry.

“We have been in talks with the Central Bank of Nigeria on ways we can add value to our local produce, and we have marked massive dairy production for the next three years.

“We cannot solve all Nigeria’s problems, but at least we can embrace and add value to areas where we have comparative advantage.”

He said that Dangote Group was the most capitalised company on the stock exchange, with investments which include six ongoing projects that would create not less than 250,000 jobs across the nation.

He said that the refinery, which primarily majored in gas plants, petrochemicals and fertilizer production, could generate an annual foreign exchange savings and earnings of $15bn dollars.

He said it would also generate up to 1500 direct jobs and 15,000 indirect jobs in support services and logistics, which would also include up to 22,000 housing facilities.

Dangote also said that the East West Onshore Gas Gathering Section pipeline of the refinery was a $3bn investment specially dedicated to generate 12,000 mega watts of power for industries.

He urged the students and other potential entrepreneurs to endeavour to venture into businesses that they are familiar with.

Politics › World Bank Intervention In Nigeria’s Agriculture Hits $1.5bn by donbrowser(op): 8:57pm On Oct 17, 2016
The World Bank says the worth of its running projects in the Agriculture sector in Nigeria is 1.5 billion dollars.
The Senior Chief Agric. Economist of the organisation, Dr Adetunji Oredipe, made this known to newsmen at a live Video Conference to celebrate “End Poverty Day.’’
He said that in Africa, the bank’s strategy to ending extreme poverty and boosting prosperity was through investment in agriculture. He said that the bank dedicated 10 per cent of its total portfolio in Nigeria to Agriculture.
He explained that the World Bank had invested 495 million dollars in Irrigation, 450 million dollars in its FADAMA development project and 150 million on other Commercial Agriculture projects. Oredipe said that the bank also has a 50 million dollars intervention fund for the resuscitation of the North East.
He said, “The key message is that we are making progress towards our goals, but it is still a tough road ahead.
“Extreme poverty continues to decline, but remains unacceptably high.
“Our most recent flagship report pointed toward inequality as a persistent barrier to progress.” Meanwhile, the Vice President, Africa Region, World Bank, Mr. Makhtar Diop, said a vibrant, sustainable and resilient agriculture sector was vital for sub-Saharan Africa’s economic future. He said that a study of the World Bank has shown that while productivity of African agriculture has grown, it still lags behind Asia and Latin America, He said, “Investments in rural public goods, combined with better policies and institutions drive agricultural productivity growth.
“The dividends from investments to strengthen markets, develop and disseminate improved technologies and expand irrigation can be enormous.
“Similarly, improvement of the policy environment through trade and regulatory policy complements spending by enhancing incentives for producers and innovators to take advantage of public goods, thereby crowding in private investment.
“Reforming the design and implementation of these subsidy programmes while prioritising government spending in favour of high-return core public goods and policies could produce significant gains.”

Passing shot, may God continue to bless you for this wonderful piece. I careless about what disgruntled elements on this forum have been saying or will eventually say, but what people like you, modath, seunmsg, omenka, fulanimafia, quota system etc say is something I take very serious and with great concern. I even thought I was the only person who finds Aisha's outburst very disgusting and ludicrous, but thank God am not alone on this.

I'm still bemused by that silly woman's arrogancy and outright pompousness. Like seriously!!! Who the hell does she thinks she is? A president, your husband have to consult you before he makes his appointments? Aisha is very silly and I hope buhari will tame the nonentity once and for all.

Buhari knows the woman very well and that's the main reason he never wanted the office of the 1st lady in the first place. Now that she has achieved her stupid goal, what will be next for her? Can you believe that what she did was so big that local televisions and newspapers over here are carrying the news. Funny indeed.

Anyway, Mrs modath, you haven't made any comment regarding this buhari/Aisha saga. I'm looking forward to read your comment.

Politics › Ambode Urges South-West To Activate Odu’a Investment by donbrowser(op): 5:06am On Oct 15, 2016
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Friday said there was need for states in the South-West of Nigeria under the Odu’a Investment Company, to reactivate the partnership for economic growth.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the maiden edition of the executive/legislature retreat held in Lagos, Ambode said the move would be in line with the region’s vision of reawakening the political economy and socio-economic hegemony of member states.

A statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Haruna, quoted the governor as saying that the Odu’a Investment initiative was a veritable economic vehicle to take the people out of the current recession.

Ambode said the economic downturn in the country does not respect tribe, religion or political party and therefore, Nigerians must rise above personal differences to solve the problem.

He said, “Our people demand and request from us good governance, leadership and hope at a critical time like this in our nation. We must therefore rise above our personal differences and interests, with a common unity of purpose; staying focused on our promises and manifesto at all times.

“If our economy must grow, it must also have the mindset and culture to want to grow. It is, therefore, left for all of us to learn to put emphasis the people. Getting good results requires that we abide by the principles of good governance.

Ambode listed fairness, equity and obedience to rule of law as necessary for good governance. He said the last 16 months of his administration had focused on these principles.

“Allowing everyone to participate to reach consensus is good governance. There must be direction as to where our government is going. Strategic vision, performance, responsiveness in getting the needed results in the most cost-reduced efforts possible is good governance,” he said.

In his message, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, commended the governor for initiating the retreat, saying that it was a good thing that the state was championing a platform for elected and appointed officials to deliberate on matters of paramount interest to the people.
