PoliticsRe: Would GEJ Dare Campaign As "Fresh Air" Or "Boy With No Shoes" Today? by DONLEKAN: 11:17am On Oct 17, 2014
His campaign speech will be like.

Four years ago. I came here to tell you I had no shoes. You bought me a rubber shoe. For that I thank you all. In 2015, it's leather shoes or I return to Otuoke.

Please, I don't need military leather boots as I have no plans to go to Sambisa.

I believe in Nigeria's muguity. Sorry, I meant to say magnanimity.

naijababe:
I am trying to keep an open mind about Buhari, but I am super concerned about his policies and what solutions he intends to proffer to our myriad of problems. I am admit I have not gotten around to reading some of your suggestions on dealing with NASS and our dubious executive but then aside from 'credibility' what else is Buhari bringing to the table? The man has enough baggage and swapping a thieving leader for an ignorant one is not making progress in my books. They are both going to be disasters!!! You need more than good intentions to be a good and capable leader!

Show me his policies in a format i can understand, heck! it can even be in cartoons, I will read it and draw my conclusions. Unlike many here, I lived through Buhari's regime even if I was a child. I still remember a lot of things about that regime I would not wish on Nigerians.
Hi my sister, I understand your fears but in the present situation in which we find ourselves in Nigeria. Buhari is a million miles ahead of Jonathan. Fine, there are many qualities needed in an ideal leader of which oratory is one of them but what you must not have as a leader is a thief (particularly in our part of the world with deliberately compromised institutions by the high and mighty) . That is what Jonathan is. A bloody, glutinous thief. Not only is he one. He is a friend to many thieves.

When Dora Akunyili was the head of NAFDAC. How many times did she deliver speeches demanding of a thunderous applause?. But the agency she did head came to life because she was a leader who led by example. She didn't fire all the people she met in NAFDAC. Rather, she achieved all with the people she met who were hitherto deemed unproductive. Truth is that when a leader has integrity. His/Her love for the nation will make him attract the right people that will take the best decisions in the interest of the nation. In addition, everyone who hitherto would have taken decision that would compromise states will be forced to do the right thing or get out.

In Buhari, you are rest assured that anyone who steals will be dealt with. Under Jonathan, tell me one big fish that has been prosecuted in his regime. Rather, he is dropping all allegations against these evil corrupt elites.

If I understand you correctly, that the age of Buhari's idea is not in tandem with the 21st century. To some extent, I agree because the Buhari I know may not be so pro free market economy, privatisation etc. But as far as I am concerned as much as I am an unrepentant capitalist. I believe all of the jargons about economic models pales into insignificance in the face of our realities in Nigeria.

For me, 2015 election is basically a contest between a good man of conscience (Buhari) and an unrepentant thief, tribalist, myopic, ungrateful, clueless, evil promoting Jonathan.

I have made my choice. As God lives, I will make sure I canvas for GMB in the 2015 election. My sister, we would like to have you too on board. I sense you have a heart for the nation and you would like to take the best decision in 2015. I can tell you in good authority GMB is the right decision for nigeria.

Come join the Nationalist team. History beckons.

PoliticsFear Grips Presidency, PDP Over Buhari’s Declaration Rally by DONLEKAN(op): 9:16am On Oct 17, 2014
There is disquiet in the Presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the crowd-pulling declaration rally of a presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ex-Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

The massive rally has forced the ruling party to return to the drawing board against the opposition.

It was gathered that some strategists in the Presidency and the PDP met on Wednesday and yesterday to analyse the rally, especially the massive turn-out and how some key APC leaders queued up behind Gen. Buhari.

It was gathered that the presence of notable and influential political leaders from the North-West, North-East, North-Central and South-West forced the Presidency and PDP leaders into a series of meetings.

In one of the sessions in Abuja, it was learnt that some parts of the Gen. Buhari’s speech upset the Presidency.

Although some strategists attempted to dismiss or underrate the rally, the Presidency and the PDP thought otherwise.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “Contrary to the permutations of some forces in the Presidency and PDP, the huge crowd at the declaration indicated that Buhari is still enjoying large following.

“The wrong assumptions in the ruling party were that Buhari’s influence had waned since 2011 election and the emergence of other presidential aspirants in APC might reduce his chances.

“Some APC leaders and governors at the rally also lent credence to the readiness of the opposition to support Buhari for the party’s ticket.”

A member of the NWC of the PDP said: “We are not underrating the implications of Buhari’s declaration rally. We have woken up to the reality that we must gird our loins. With Buhari, the battle has started.

“Our leaders are already doing some rethinking because we know what Buhari’s candidacy portends for our party.

A source in the PDP Governors Forum said: “I cannot deceive you, we met on Wednesday night on some issues and Gen. Buhari’s declaration rally took the central stage because he seems to be in control of the North-East and Northwest.

“And if you look at the North-Central, APC is certainly stronger in Niger, Kwara, Benue and Nasarawa.

“To us, the forthcoming poll might not be an easy ride as being projected by some strategists in the Presidency.”

There were indications last night that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors have resolved to either be allowed to anoint their successors or leave the party to its fate in next year’s poll.

Gen. Buhari yesterday picked his nomination form to contest for the ticket of the party 24 hours after he declared in Abuja. He expressed concern about the N27.5 million.

The former leader who spoke at the party’s national secretariat said “If I were not part of the constitutional body of the party and the fact that I am part of those that formed this party, I would have complained about the amount that we have to pay.

“It is a pity that I could not influence this amount like was done for the women who are trying to participate and for the disabled. I looked left and right and could not read sympathy on anybody’s face and so, I kept my trap and felt heavily sorry for myself because I don’t want to go and ask anybody to pay for my nomination.

“If you could recall, in all the contests, I have always tried to pay myself at least for the nomination. But paying N27.5 million these days is not easy. Thank God I have a personal relationship with the Chairman of my bank. I called him and told him that the forms are coming and so, whether my account is in red or green or black, you must honour this, otherwise, I will lose the nomination.

“I was about to go to Kaduna today and I told the Chairman and he said, you better pick the form and he kept a straight face. That means that there is no excuse. I thank God that we have got to this stage and all speculations will now cease and now, in the best tradition of democracy, people can now follow their choice aspirant into the arena”.

National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, said the N27.5 million nomination fee was meant to separate the boys from the men.

Chief Odigie-Oyegun assured that the leadership would not impose any candidate on the party in the name of consensus, pointing out that if the aspirants decided on a consensus candidate among themselves, the party would go along with them.

He said “I will give you one clear assurance and that is, if there is consensus among the aspirants, we as a party will welcome it. But if there is no consensus, we are going to give you the cleanest and the most transparent primaries.

“We are going to let this country see, like your declaration has already showed that this is a party that is different, these are people that are different and these are leaders that are different and will do things differently and we will teach this nation a lesson in democracy and what democracy is all about.

“There is one thing that the public is looking for today and I am sure that your friends, when they talk to you, always say it because when people talk to me, they always say, Mr. chairman, there is one more bridge to cross. Have a free, fair and transparent primaries to choose your candidate without rancour.

“The implication of their statement is that once that happens, you are on your way. I am so confident that with proper leadership, once we get a proper candidate who will become the face of the party without rancour and we hammer the party and its great fighting force behind that candidate, nothing is going to stop that train except when it arrives at its destination.

“We must run a rancour free runoff to the presidential primaries such that it becomes easy for all the aspirants to embrace each other and work with each other. We will do whatever we can in that regard.

“I intend to talk to all the aspirants once we know the number of aspirants we have. I want you to tell me what you want to see in the process and I want you or your representative to participate actively in the process towards the presidential primaries so that everybody will be on board.

“There is no secret about it as everybody will be part of it and whatever modification the aspirants want to make will be accommodated so that all the aspirants will know that we want to run things freely, transparently and above board”.

Congratulating Gen. Buhari for the success of his declaration of intention, Chief Odigie-Oyegun said the implication of the success of the event is that Nigerians will be saying that “truly, the APC has arrived and they mean business”.

He added that while the party is looking forward to a number of aspirants, he said: “we are very glad by the kind of display that, one by one, they are putting up. It is a clear indication of the quality in the APC.

“It is a clear indication of the quality of leadership that we are offering the nation which were being showcased yesterday before the entire nation. The nation will watch and then decide for themselves.

“Of all the people being presented by the APC, There is no one, to my mind who is not eminently qualified to govern this country and who, when given half a chance can beat anybody the PDP is bringing to the fore. We have two aspirants who have come forward and what that means is that as at today, we already have two possible Presidents of this great nation, Nigeria.

“I want to say that I was truly very glad watching the event yesterday. We saw the crowd and as usual, we saw how feverish they were and that is to be expected because that is vintage Buhari.

“When you bring hope to the people, they are over joyed even without putting money into their pocket. That share feeling that tomorrow is going to be better than today brings them satisfaction”.

Electing Buhari would be retrogressive, even with all of GEJ's failings I would not support an ageing man whose only claim to credibility is 'integrity' from way back in the early-mid 80's when probably half the Nigerians alive right now were not even born.

I don't really doubt his integrity, but clearly we need far more than just integrity at this moment. Buhari's utterances on violence in the North are not exactly palatable (albeit blown out of proportion by the PDP). Nonetheless he is not a suitable candidate - he is from a different era and should be mentoring younger candidates.

I think we can do much, much, better.
If a man could be just at a younger age when he had propensity to be materialistic and desirous of a secured future. Don't you think the probability of same looting public treasure at a much older age is next to nil?. Think about it.

PoliticsDont Field Atiku, Obasanjo Warns APC. by DONLEKAN(op): 1:00am On Oct 11, 2014
There are strong indications that former President Olusegun Obasanjo may have warned the All Progressives Congress not to field former Vice-President Abubakar Atiku as its flagbearer in the 2015 elections.

Obasanjo, during a recent visit by the APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to his residence in Abeokuta, was said to have warned the opposition party against fielding an “unclean vessel” as its presidential candidate in 2015.

An impeccable source, who was at the meeting but did not want his name mentioned, told Saturday PUNCH that last week’s visit by Tinubu to Obasanjo was meant to remind the former President of the need to support the APC to realise its ambition of winning next year’s presidential election.

The source said, “Chief Obasanjo appreciated Tinubu’s visit to his home, but specifically warned the APC to shut its door against “unclean vessel.”

“Chief Obasanjo reiterated his refusal to join the APC when Tinubu visited him in his Abeokuta residence, but warned the party to beware of Atiku.

“The former President appreciated the move by the APC to find out what he knew about two of the APC aspirants seeking the party’s presidential ticket. He was happy that the party consulted him over whom to pick as its presidential candidate. The former President gave detailed information on the APC presidential aspirants to Tinubu.”

But Atiku’s media aide, Garba Shehu, said he was not aware of such comments by Obasanjo against the former vice-president.

Shehu, who said that Atiku had consulted relevant stakeholders on his plan to become Nigeria’s president next year, said, “You can quote me; we are not in any way aware of such comment. What I can say is that the former vice-president has written a letter to his former boss, respectfully informing him of his wish to bid for the APC ticket.”

He also said that Atiku had sent similar letters to other Nigerians.

“These letters, which were personally signed, had gone to thousands of other Nigerians, including politicians, traditional and religious leaders as well as friendly-diplomatic missions.”

Senate President David Mark and Tinubu had last Friday held separate closed-door meetings with Obasanjo. Both Mark and the former Lagos State governor said the issues discussed at the meetings held at the Obasanjo’s Hilltop residence in Abeokuta centred on the state of the nation.

Tinubu had told journalists that he had discussion with Obasanjo on “some of his former boys” who would vie for elective positions in the 2015 general elections, especially the Presidency.

He had said, “We are here to pay homage to our former President and discuss with him because he has a number of influences in the political sphere.

“We need to talk to find out his thinking about Nigeria and the future. We need to seek his observation on some of his former boys who are running for Presidency in our party.”

Mark had also described Obasanjo as the father of the nation with a wealth of experience.

The Senate President had told journalists after the meeting that he came with his team, including Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan; the Peoples Democratic Party Women Leader, Mrs. Josephine Anenih; and Senator Polycarp Nwite, among others to discuss with the former President and raise some basic issues that affected both the party and the nation.

He said, “We discussed issues that will move Nigeria forward because Chief Obasanjo’s love for Nigeria is unquantifiable. So, we had a good discussion with him.”

Saturday PUNCH also learnt that the former president would support APC in its bid to win next year’s presidential election.

Party sources said Obasanjo did not need to defect to the opposition party before he could support it to win the poll.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, told one of our correspondents on telephone on Thursday that the recent visit to Obasanjo by Tinubu was part of efforts to ensure that the opposition party got the former President’s support ahead of the poll.

Though the APC spokesperson said that he was not fully privy to the topic of discussion between Obasanjo and Tinubu, he said that if the party leader had gone to visit the former President, it was about how the former president could help the opposition party win in the 2015 general elections.

He said, “I am not fully aware of what they (Obasanjo and Tinubu) discussed. But of course, did you expect they would discuss church matters? Clearly if he went to visit Obasanjo, it had to be about politics and the party. What else would you expect them to talk about?

“That would not be the first time the party chieftains would meet with the former President. There is no secret about it. We want the party to win in next year’s elections. That is it.”

When asked whether the former President might defect to the APC to help the party achieve its goal, Mohammed said, “Obasanjo does not need to defect to the APC before he could help the party.

“The former President needs not declare openly or defect to our party before he can help us. Someone went to visit him, he was chased out; Asiwaju Tinubu went to visit him and he was entertained. What are you talking about? What does that tell you?”

Obasanjo had in 2013 embraced the APC when some of the party’s national leaders and governors elected on its platform visited him in Abeokuta.

The APC leaders then sought Obasanjo’s support for the party’s bid to win the forthcoming elections.

Among Obasanjo’s visitors during the December 2013 visit were Tinubu, former APC Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande; former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari; former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff; Senator Osita Isunazor; and Senator Bukola Saraki.

Tinubu, who hailed Obasanjo’s contributions to nation-building, had lamented that the country was divided more than ever.

Tinubu had added that the APC had resolved to rescue Nigeria and appealed to the former President to lead the mission.

He had said, “You have come out of tribulation and held the highest position in this country. We are here because of your courage. Nobody can say he has information more than you. You have surmounted a number of crises. Nigeria is divided more than before; to realise stable Nigeria, we want to encourage you to continue to speak the truth. We are resolved and determined to rescue Nigeria. We want you as navigator.”

But the Peoples Democratic Party, which apparently sensed that the APC might finally get Obasanjo’s full support, on Wednesday, made entreaties to beg the former President.

Obasanjo, a former Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, had refused to identify with the party following series of disagreements he had with President Goodluck Jonathan and the running of the party.

The former President even as the chairman of BoT of the party shunned the meetings of the various organs of the party, including its National Executive Committee.

But speaking while receiving former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, who defected from the Labour Party to the PDP in Abuja on Wednesday, the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’Azu, begged Obasanjo to return to the PDP.

Mu’azu, who was reacting to an earlier apology offered by Daniel, said every member of the party must beg the former President for forgiveness.

He described Obasanjo as a pragmatic leader, who he said hailed from a zone he claimed had produced the best educated people in the country.

Mu’azu said, “I want to join former Ogun State governor, I want to join my dear elder brother and indeed all the teeming members here to very sincerely apologise to our leader, to our baba, my baba, General, President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to forgive us.

“We cannot continue. I know he has been very prayerful. In the Villa, I know he used to pray every morning. Very early, 5:30 to 6am, he is praying.

“And I know he keeps on praying all the time. As we say in our Lord’s Prayer: ‘Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who trespass against us’; Baba, you have to forgive us. I beg you in the name of the Almighty God, so that you too can be forgiven. We are your children. We are making mistakes, we have made mistakes, we have apologised.

“We will not agree even if you want to throw the baby away with the bath water, the baby will not go without you.

“So, please baba, we apologise. Come and lead us. Even the President (Goodluck Jonathan) is waiting for you. Come and lead us. You are our leader, we appreciate you, we thank you for your leadership.”

1.1.1 I must commend you for effort make at re-awakening national consciousness. But, need I to tell you that the problem with the Nigerian nation is that there is no convergence in that which we consider good for us. The only set of people with a unity of purpose in Nigeria are those holding one political office or the other and I bet you; they are doing good at that which they have chosen to do; looting.
I take the issue of true federalism as an example. Everyone who finds himself in political office thinks why should I devolve powers to the federating units when that will mean that I have less funds to play with, the people around such ruler inclusive of the critical mass of his ethnic nationality believing that it is better to have as much resource as possible in the hand of our son, since he is the only one we trust.
