A Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Wuse, Abuja has granted Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye leave to travel to the United States, US, for medical treatment, The embattled lawmaker was arraigned before the court on May 2 on charges bordering on his alleged escape from a police vehicle in Abuja on April 24, 2018, Melaye was alleged to have jumped-off a police van conveying him to Lokoja. But at the resumed hearing yesterday, Melaye’s counsel, John Odubela prayed the court to order the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command to release the lawmaker’s international passport to enable him travel to the US for a medical treatment, Odubela disclosed that the embattled lawmaker was an asthmatic patient and his health conditions had deteriorated. Counsel to the Police, Alex Izinyon, however opposed Odubela’s prayers, saying the defence did not present any referral from the National Hospital to the Proposed US hospital. Ruling on the matter, the presiding Magistrate, Mabel Segun-Bello held that Melaye be allowed to travel, the magistrate ruled that since Melaye’s health condition existed before the case was filed and the appointment at the hospital predated the trial, there was no need for a referral letter. She ordered that Melaye’s international passport be released and be allowed to travel out of the country for treatment for a period of 20 days. The Magistrate, however, ordered that Melaye returns the international passport to the custody of the Commissioner of Police of the FCT upon his return. A 36-year-old trader, Mrs Florence Anyasi, on Wednesday told a Customary Court in Igando, Lagos to dissolve her 10-year-old marriage because her husband, Stanley is a chronic womaniser. She told the court that apart from many cases of him following women around, her husband used to sneak into their maid’s room at night to sleep with her, I have caught him severally on my maid’s bed sexually assaulting her. “A neighbour approached me and told me to warn my husband to desist from asking her daughter to have love affairs with him, “I once caught him sucking the breasts of my niece, who is very young and he is also fond of wooing my friends,” the mother of three said as she reeled out her grievances before the court and Anyasi also accused the husband of threatening her life. “My husband always tells me that he will get rid of me and had once succeeded in poisoning me. “He bought food for me and after eating, I started having serious pain and vomiting, I was rushed to the hospital by neighbours, when I was diagnosed, it was detected that the food I just ate had been poisoned.” The petitioner said that her husband equally turned her into a punching bag, beating her at the slightest provocation, and has been calling her thief and prostitute in public and that her husband was irresponsible and unable to provide food or pay for the education of their children, She therefore urged the court to dissolve her marriage with Stanley. The defendant, however, denied all the allegations and in turn accused his wife of adultery, claiming that her lover even bought a car for her, “In January 2017 she came home with a car of N1 million, when I queried her where she got the car from, she claimed she bought it with her money. “I strongly disagreed with her because she is only selling foodstuffs and can never afford that kind of a car.” The 40-year-old businessman said that his wife packed out of their matrimonial home in 2017 without his knowledge, “I came home from work and discovered that my wife had packed all her belonging out with the children to start living with her lover and “I called her severally, she refused to pick but she eventually picked my call last January and informed me that our last baby she delivered in May 2017 was not mine that the child belonged to the man she is presently living with. “Before she even gave birth and packed out of my house, I always received information from people that they saw my wife in hotel with men but I always ignored them and he further stated that Stanley said that he provided food and was paying the school fees of their children. On the allegation of turning her to a punching bag, Stanley said that he only beat her once when she stabbed him with bottle on his head, The respondent urged the court to grant his wife’s wish for the dissolution of marriage, saying that he too was no longer interested. The court president, Mr Akin Akinniyi, admonished the couple to maintain peace and adjourned July 3, for judgment. The Nigerian Government has scrapped Award of HND Certificates by Polytechnics. The decision was reached at the Federal Executive Council, FEC, yesterday where the approval of a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s tertiary education system was made. The award of HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes, there will be no fresh admission for HND programmes that is not technical. Also all the programmes currently being run by polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70 per cent, will be scrapped, it is going to be a rigorous implementation programme. Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils. The polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university. Enforcing the new policy, the nation’s two most prominent polytechnics – Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic – will henceforth be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna and to give legal teeth to these approvals, the FEC approved the submission of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment. With education being on the concurrent list, the states may wish to consolidate their tertiary institutions. But if they do not wish to follow the federal example, their programmes will continue to be regulated by the relevant agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education. Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, told journalists after the weekly meeting of the council that under the reform measures, his ministry would, however, continue to license private polytechnics and colleges of education for the award of qualification at ND and National Certificate in Education (NCE) levels. He said, “There will be no more award of HND. A ministerial committee to ensure the smooth implementation of all that is required for the take-off of the reform initiatives is to begin work immediately. Adamu further stated that, “The HND certificate will remain a legal tender in Nigeria and holders of such certificate will continue to be recognised as the equivalent of first degree holders without discriminatory remunerations and limit to progression in the work place. “The NCE certificate will be retained as the minimum teaching qualification at the basic level of education. Any higher qualifications by these private or state-owned polytechnics will be only affiliation with a university. So, HND is no longer in existence, but existing HND will be respected and considered legal tender.” The first bill will concretise the setting up of the two city universities while the second will approve the preparation and consolidation of all federal polytechnics and colleges of education as campuses of proximate universities. The Ministry of Justice will do the preparation and submission of the two bills to the National Assembly. Source :https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/post/editdiscussion/820

In an interview with BBC, Falz opened up on the inspiration behind the viral video, “This is Nigeria’ and how he feels his critics have missed the point of the video. The rapper said, ”The video has been very well received. Even initially when I was releasing it, I didn’t sort of anticipate the magnitude of reaction… I thought there will be some form of reaction and conversation but I didn’t know how widely it will be received. He further stated that ”It was important, first of all, I was inspired by the original, This is America by Childish Gambino, I thought it was a very artistic and creative way to tell the American story and I thought it will be amazing to tell the Nigerian story in a similar fashion. “It was very important to stir up a heightened level of political and social consciousness out here. ”Majority of what I have been facing, in terms of reactions to the video is just a matter of people that are trying to shoot the messenger so that they miss the message, but at the end of the day, the message is really clear and everyone knows that the message is the truth.” source https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/814/falz-reacts-to-criticisms-on-this-is-nigeria-video?new=1 lalasticlala

President Buhari dismissed fears and once again proved that he is open to any initiative that would further the interest of the younger generation by approving the 'Not to young to run' Bill. The President in a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday at 7:00 a.m. in commemoration of the Democracy Day on Tuesday vowed to sign the 'Not to young to run' Bill into law. He said he will be joined in a few days time by many promising young Nigerians to sign into Bill into law. The bill which was first passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives in July 2017 seeks to modify the 1999 Constitution, which will reduce the minimum age requirement for elective positions in the country. This amendment will relieve advocates of the revolutionary new law which will in turn help to relax the stringent and discriminatory provisions of the Constitution. Since the bill was passed about 25 states, representing more than two-thirds of the country’s 36 states, had adopted the bill as at March ending. This 'Not to young to run bill' passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives is the outcome of relentless efforts by the alliance of more than 40 youth-based initiatives across the country. The President in his speech described the commemoration of 2018 Democracy Day, which is the third anniversary of his administration, as a celebration of freedom for Nigerians. He said the celebration was also a recommitment by his government to keep its promise to lead Nigeria into a new era of justice and prosperity. source:https://www.infonewsnigeria.com/discussion/423/buhari-promised-to-sign-not-to-young-to-run-bill-into-law#latest
