The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has launched a manhunt for Ugonna, son to the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke. This is in connection with the alleged disbursement of money to INEC officials and election monitors in the build-up to the presidential election. According to sources at the EFCC, Ugonna is the key to arresting all those involved in the case. EFCC officials had stated that Diezani’s son served as a middleman between the ex-minister and the bank MD. A senior official, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said, “We have launched a manhunt for Ugonna, who the suspects said was the one who drew up a list of individuals, who should be given the N23bn ($115m). “We don’t know exactly where he is but we will get him. He needs to explain his role in the sharing of the money because the bank officials have been mentioning his name since they were brought in.” Ugonna is the Head of Business Development and Commercial Marketing at Radam Maritime Services Limited, a firm, which is headed by his father, Alison Madueke, a former Chief of naval Staff, who is also under investigation by the EFCC for alleged money laundering. He is said to have business interests in the United States and the United Kingdom. Ugonna, who is an engineer, burst into the limelight in 2012 when photos showing his ostentatious lifestyle went viral on the Internet. In one of such pictures, the graduate of University of Maryland College Park in the US, was seen flying in a private jet and later drinking champagne in a limousine. He has also been seen displaying wads of dollar notes on social media. http://www.punchng.com/efcc-launches-manhunt-diezanis-son/

“They were sent there by their constituents to represent them and that takes precedence, after plenary those that can make it may still show up.” |
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki just arrived the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, for his ongoing trial in company of two senators again. Saraki who is currently standing trial on a 13 count charge bordering on false declaration of assets arrived the tribunal in company of two Senator, Ogola Foster of Bayelsa West and Senator, Jubrin Barau from Kano State. DAILY POST recalls that the same number of Senators accompanied Saraki to the tribunal in a show of solidarity yesterday which is a significant decrease from the number that previously accompanied the Senate President to the tribunal. Speaking with DAILY POST, a source from the National Assembly who wished not to be mention said the reason for the reduction is because there is a plenary session. The source said, “There is plenary today and you don’t expect these Senators to accompany Saraki to the tribunal. “They were sent there by their constituents to represent them and that takes precedence, after plenary those that can make it may still show up.” The ongoing trial has seen the prosecution witnessed disclosing how Saraki used over N522m to purchase a property in Lagos. The witness, Michael Wetkas, who is an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, told the tribunal how the Senate President used his account with the Guaranteed Trust Bank to launder money and procure properties while he was governor of Kwara State. Wetkas had disclosed how Saraki transferred over $73, 000 to a foreign account from his account with Guaranteed Trust Bank. He had said that documents relating to the transfer were burnt during a fire incident that occurred in one of the branches of the bank. During yesterday’s sitting, Saraki’s counsel, Rephael Oluyede argued over a pending application which sought the disqualification of the trial judge, Danladi Umar. Umar had adjourned the matter till today for ruling and continuation of trial. Today’s proceeding is yet to commence. “Your Lordship has not being tried, convicted by any court, investigation is investigation. |
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Wednesday said the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Danladi Umar has no right to preside over his ongoing trial. Saraki is currently standing trial at the tribunal for false declaration of assets. The Senate President through his counsel, Raphael Oluyede informed the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, of a pending application filed on April 19, 2016, seeking the Chairman of the tribunal, Danladi Umar to disqualify himself from conducting the trials, citing likelihood of bias. Oluyede alleged that there was a likelihood of bias on the part of Umar who was investigated for corruption to the tune of N10m by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, as was directed by the then Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke, adding that the same EFCC is the prosecution in the current matter involving his client who is the Senate President. He claimed that Umar admitted to the anti-graft agency that he met with an accused person privately in his chambers, thereby raising doubt over his credibility to try this case. Oluyede contended that the anti-graft agency in various letters alleged to have cleared the CCT Chairman do not completely clear him, saying “this evokes a cloud and we do not know what is behind it. We submit that the continued sitting of Umar on the panel removes the guarantee that the tribunal trying an accused person will act independently or impartially.” On these grounds, Oluyede urged the tribunal to grant “the relieve sought in this application in the interest of justice.” But counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs contended that the tribunal Chairman had the right to preside over the matter, stressing that Umar has not being tried in any court or being convicted before. He added that there is no evidence to show that Umar was still being investigated by the anti-graft agency. He said, “Your Lordship has not being tried, convicted by any court, investigation is investigation. “Even if he is under investigation, he can still continue with his duty. The defendant in this case despite being charged to court is still carrying out his duty as a senator.” Jacobs argued that Oluyede was not a counsel on record when he brought up the application before the tribunal. Citing Section 349(7)Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Jacobs argued that only the lead counsel can represent an accused person from commencement to the end of a trial, adding that a 3-day notice must be given. He maintained that if the tribunal should consider the application of Saraki, it “means whenever a judge is accused , he should not sit over the matter which is not right.” Jacobs also stated that EFCC had concluded its investigation on the alleged corruption charge against the tribunal Chairman since 2015, stressing that the anti-graft agency in a letter to the then Attorney General of the Federation dated 24 June 2014 never indicted or recommended that the tribunal Chairman be prosecuted contrary to the argument of Saraki’s counsel. Jacobs while urging the tribunal to dismissed the application which he claimed is “frivolous” said it’s meant to “harass and disgrace the tribunal Chairman.” Proceedings is still ongoing.
