CrimeFake Presidential Villa Staff Nabbed by DONSMITH123(op): 7:19am On Aug 04, 2015
Life Camp Police Division on Friday nabbed one Abubakar Sadiq for impersonation and defrauding unsuspecting members of the public claiming that he was a staff of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

A source told our reporter that the police arrested the suspect, who made promises of juicy appointments in government establishments to his victims, while acting on a tip-off.
The source said the suspect was arrested in a hotel that he used as hideout for his nefarious act.
“One of his victims informed the police that the suspect collected the sum of N1.5 million from him with the promise that he (suspect) will secure appointment for him(victim) as a board member with the Customs Service.
“Police investigation also revealed that a Mercedes Benz E350 with registration number JJJ 442 AP used by the suspect was actually bought from one his victims without him making any payment for it. He however promised the car owner the appointment in lieu of payment for the car,” the source said.
City News also gathered that he had duped many people of various sums of money as they believed he actually worked in the villa.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, said the Life Camp Police Division recovered from the suspect 19 CVs, international passports, 19 passport photographs, 3 cheque books, 1 expired driver’s license, 20 pieces of bank tellers, 1 Dstv drifter, 3 handsets, 1 mini Ipad, and a black Mercedes Benz E350 with registration number JJJ 442 AP.
The police boss enjoined members of the public to guard against falling prey to fraudulent people.
He said the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCIID) for further investigation.

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, said at the weekend that he was satisfied with the apology offered by former Niger Delta Minister Elder Godsday Orubebe over his behaviour during collation of last presidential election result.

Speaking with our correspondent in Ilorin, Kwara State, where he attended the 80th birthday ceremony of a former National Commissioner of INEC, Dr. Abdulkadir Oniyangi, Jega said he had since forgotten about the matter. It would be recalled that Orubebe who was the PDP agent during the last election accused Jega of bias.

Jega advised Nigerians to put Orubebe’s performance behind and move on in building on the gains of the last election which he said met the requirements of international best practices.

He said: “I think the Orubebe’s incident is behind us, and we should just move on and not be held back by it. I was made to understand that a day or two after the incident, Mr. Orubebe made a public apology through the news media and I think that is sufficient enough.

“I think the challenges for us include ensuring that statesmen act as they should. And under all circumstances, we must control our emotions and resist the temptation of making wild allegations which can disrupt a process as important as the election. But I think we all learnt something from the elections,” he added.

The former INEC boss who has now returned to the classroom said he was delighted to be back. He stressed that the commission should continue to work on the voters’ register.

PoliticsAnglican Church Sorry For 'betrayal' Of Samuel Ajayi Crowther by DONSMITH123(op): 9:49am On Aug 03, 2015
The Archbishop of Canterbury has apologised for the Church of England’s ill-treatment of its first African Bishop, Samuel Ajayi Crowther.
Preaching at a ‘thanksgiving and repentance’ service marking the 150th anniversary of Bishop Crowther’s ordination, Archbishop Justin Welby said: “This is a service of thanksgiving and repentance. Thanksgiving for the extraordinary life, which we commemorate [and] repentance, shame and sorrow for Anglicans who are reminded of the sin of many of their ancestors.

“We in the Church of England need to say sorry that someone was properly and rightly consecrated Bishop and then betrayed and let down and undermined. It was wrong.”

Regarded as the father of Anglicanism in Nigeria, Bishop Crowther, who was born as Ajayi in western Nigeria in 1807, is credited with bringing many Nigerians to Christ. So great was his impact that he was ordained the first African Anglican bishop in 1864, despite great protest. A former slave, Bishop Crowther became a great linguist, translator, scholar and mission teacher. He is also credited with producing the Yoruba Bible and greatly influenced how government’s improved their view of Africa in the 1800s. But despite his passion and high achievements, Bishop Crowther’s mission was undermined and dismantled in the 1880s by racist white Europeans, including some of his fellow missionaries. Historians said prejudiced fellow Anglican missionaries wrongly questioned the moral values and competency of Bishop Crowther and his African staff - and systematically dismantled his mission and undermined his work. In the end, he resigned. Researchers at the Boston University’s School of Theology in the US wrote: “Mission policy, racial attitudes and evangelical spirituality had taken new directions, and new sources of European missionaries were now available. By degrees, Crowther’s mission was dismantled: by financial controls, by young Europeans taking over, by dismissing, suspending or transferring the African staff. Crowther, desolated, died of a stroke.” Bishop Crowther was replaced by a white bishop.

In his sermon on Sunday (June 30), Archbishop Welby said of Crowther: “In spite of immense hardship and despite the racism of many whites, he evangelised so effectively that he was eventually ordained Bishop, over much protest. He led his missionary diocese brilliantly, but was in the end falsely accused and had to resign, not long before his death.” Archbishop Welby added: “Crowther did not make himself grand. He lived out the commands of the words he took at his consecration. And from his time forward, God has demonstrated his grace through that ministry. Today well over 70 million Christians in Nigeria are his spiritual heirs.

“Today we honour him and in so doing The Lord Jesus Christ whom he served. We are sorry for his suffering at the hands of Anglicans in this country. Learning from their foolishness and from his heroism, we seek to be a church that does not again exclude those whom God is calling. We seek new apostles, and the grace to recognise them when they come.”

PoliticsJonathan: God Has Vindicated Me, Says Father Mbaka by DONSMITH123(op): 2:32pm On Jul 31, 2015
The founder of Enugu Adoration Ministry, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, said Thursday that his celebration of 20th priesthood anniversary was victory over enemies of truth and blackmailers.

The highly outspoken Catholic priest, who rode the storm ahead of the March Presidential election for his prediction that then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan would lose to now President Muhammadu Buhari, has a penchant to stand against authorities when he perceives foul play.

For his direct prediction against Jonathan, the candidate that enjoyed overwhelming support of Mbaka’s Southeast people, he was roundly condemned by many, and vilified by not a few.

The Catholic cleric, while speaking at the Christ the King Parish, Enugu, during his 20th anniversary mass, attended by thousands of worshippers, said despite all the attacks against him, God continued to protect him because he remained on the side of the truth.

He said, “I am not tired after 20 years, 20 years of good health; 20 years of miracles from God; 20 years of hard apostolic work; 20 years in the hand of God.

“There was a time they blackmailed me; they were saying such things like 'Mbaka why? Mbaka this, Mbaka that', but I have remained in the hand of God.”

He, however, said he had forgiven his attackers, praying God to “forgive all those who have fought us on the course of this ministry and bless those who have stood behind us.”

Although he did not name names, it is obvious the cleric was referring to his December 31,2014 prediction of former President Hoodluck Jonathan defeat at the polls.

In a special message, entitled, '20-point agenda,' Fr. Mbaka said he was praying for President Buhari “that God will protect him so that enemies will not destroy him. I also pray for Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi so that God will not allow occultic men to steal his vision.”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has hailed Mbaka for his stoic support for truth agsinst all odds.

Buhari in a statement by a Senior aide on Media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said “Father Mbaka is a great priest who was not afraid to speak truth to power, even at the cost of his own life or being hated by leaders in power.”

He said further that “Mbaka was a remarkable example that religious leaders are the conscience and moral compass of the society.”

The statement further stated that the priest “rose to the occasion to add his voice in support of good governance and identify with ordinary Nigerians in the face of despair and uncertain future.”

It also explained that adding “one's voice to make one's country better has nothing to do with politics”, and that as the “conscience of the nation”, religious leaders cannot afford to be aloof or indifferent to the miseries of the people.”

According to the statement, President said “though honest opinions attract hostility from leaders detached from reality”, history would be kind to Father Mbaka for courageously speaking truth to power, even at great risks.

President Buhari, who said he is “overwhelmed by Mbaka's sincerity and patriotism” prayed to God to grant the Priest more good health, long life and wisdom in the service of humanity, adding that he is a fountain of inspiration to all Nigerians.

PoliticsHow Fifth Columnists In Nigerian Military Leaked Operational Plans To Boko Haram by DONSMITH123(op): 2:10pm On Jul 31, 2015
Alex Badeh, the immediate past commander of the Nigerian military, has revealed that the effectiveness of the fight against the militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, was greatly hampered by fifth columnists within the military who leaked sensitive information and operational plans to the terrorist sect.

Mr. Badeh, whose hometown, Mubi, was briefly captured by Boko Haram in 2014, was speaking on Thursday during his valedictory ceremony from the Nigerian Armed Forces.

He said the activities of saboteurs within the military led to the unnecessary deaths of many soldiers and officers who unknowingly walked into ambushes laid by Boko Haram who had prior knowledge of troops movement.

“The activities of fifth columnists in the military and other security agencies who leaked operational plans and other sensitive military information to the terrorist, combined to make the fight against the insurgents particularly difficult,” he said.

“The activities of these unpatriotic members of the military not only blunted the effectiveness of the fight, but also led to the needless deaths of numerous officers and men who unwittingly fell into ambushes prepared by terrorists who had advance warnings of the approach of such troops.”

Describing his task of coordinating the war against the insurgents as the “most complex and challenging assignment” of his 38-year-long career, he said he was saddled with the task of leading a military which lacked the “relevant equipment and motivation to fight an enemy that was invisible and embedded with the local populace”.

He said the decision of some countries not to sell arms to Nigeria to prosecute the war also limited the capability of the military to effectively fight the insurgents.

Citing human rights abuses perpetrated by the Nigerian military in its campaign against the insurgents, the United States, for instance, refused to sell arms to the Nigerian military and blocked an arms deal with Israel on one occasion.

Nigeria’s decision to purchase arms from the black market led to the confiscation of $15 million illegally transported into South Africa by arms dealers contracted by the government.

Nigeria later bought arms from China, Russia and other Eastern European countries to turn the tide against the insurgents.

Mr. Badeh also blamed successive governments for neglecting the military over the years thereby reducing its capability as a fighting force of note. He said unlike the situation the Nigeria military found itself in, an effective military is built during peace time and adequately trained to combat future threats. He also blamed previous governments for listening to foreign advice to cut the size of the Nigerian military.

“Permit me to also add here, that nation’s militaries are equipped and trained in peace time, for the conflicts they expect to confront in the future,” he said.

“Unfortunately that has not been our experience as a nation. Over the years, the military was neglected and under-equipped to ensure the survival of certain regimes, while other regimes, based on advice from some foreign nations, deliberately reduced the size of the military and underfunded it.

“Accordingly, when faced with the crisis in the North East and other parts of the country, the military was overstretched and had to embark on emergency recruitments and trainings, which were not adequate to prepare troops for the kind of situation we found ourselves in. It is important therefore for the government to decide on the kind of military force it needs, by carrying out a comprehensive review of the nation’s military force structure to determine the size, capability and equipment holding required to effectively defend the nation and provide needed security.”

He thanked the personnel of the Nigerian armed forces who showed uncommon patriotism and commitment in the fight against the insurgents despite fighting under a very challenging condition.

“Despite these challenges, I am glad to note that a lot was achieved during our time in the fight against terror,” he said.

“The achievements recorded are largely due to the commitment, patriotism and fighting spirit of our men and women in uniform who saw the fight against terror as a task that must be accomplished no matter the odds and in spite of the campaign of calumny against the military by a section of the media with their foreign collaborators.”

Mr. Badeh, now a retired Air Chief Marshal, and other service chiefs, were sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 13. He was replaced by Abayomi Olonishakin, a major general.

PoliticsFormer Defence Spokesperson, Chris Olukolade Resigns As FOSSRA Chairman by DONSMITH123(op): 1:54pm On Jul 31, 2015
The former defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, on Thursday resigned as chairman of the Forum of Spokespersons of Security and Response Agencies.

Mr. Olukolade, while handing over to his navy counterpart, Kabiru Aliyu, at the forum’s monthly meeting at the Centre for Crisis Communication, formally informed his colleagues about his retirement having reached his retirement age.

He told his colleagues he ought to have retired from service since November 2014 when he applied for voluntary retirement, but was not obliged by the Army Council, who he said extended his stay in the service on the grounds that it was not proper for him to go at that time when the country was at the peak of battling Boko Haram terrorists.

Mr. Olukolade, retiring as a major general, thanked members of the forum and their agencies for the support and understanding they accorded him while he chaired the forum since its formation in 2013.

He solicited the same measure of support for his successor while reminding the members of the core essence of the forum, which is to deepen the collaboration and understanding among security and response agencies in information management and communication.

Also, Mr. Aliyu, a Commodore, praised the leadership qualities of his predecessor and assured that he would take up responsibilities where the retiring general stopped.

Mr. Aliyu said he was determined to strive more to move the forum to another level.

The executive secretary of Centre for Crisis Communication, Yusuf Anas, a retired air commodore, also commended Mr. Olukolade for his positive contributions to national development and crisis communication strategies in one of the most critical period in Nigeria.

He also wished him well in his future endeavors.

The membership of FOSSRA are the spokespersons of Military, Security, Intelligence and Response agencies.

They represent the Defence Headquarters, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police, Department of State Service (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Customs Service, Nigerian Immigration Service, Nigerian Prisons Service, Federal Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

CrimeSecurity Guard In Court For Stealing N2m Fowls by DONSMITH123(op): 11:50am On Jul 31, 2015
The police in Kubwa have dragged a 29-year-old security guard before an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court over the theft of 2,200 fowls valued at N2,220,500 from a poultry farm at Kubwa, a satellite town of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

David Buba of Arab Road, Kubwa, was charged with theft, an offence that contradicts Section 387 of the Penal Code.
The police prosecutor, Lukas Ephraim, told the court that one Ajonye Amina of Navy Quarters, Phase 4, Kubwa, on July 23, reported at the police station, how the accused, between May and June, acted in a dubious manner and stole the said number of fowl.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N2, 000, 000 by Judge Mohammed Marafa, with two reasonable sureties, one of who must be a civil servant of not less than level 6 and resident within the court’s jurisdiction.
The case was adjourned to September 7, 2015.
Similarly, a 21-year-old man was sentenced to one year imprisonment by the same court for stealing a motorcycle in the same area.
Dauda Bala of Dei-Dei was convicted for theft, offence contrary to Section 287 of the Penal Code.
The police prosecutor, Yakubu Enang, told the court that one Babatunde Abegunda of Dutse Makaranta, on June 24, complained at the Dutsen- Alhaji police station that the accused criminally stormed his house, forced the padlock open and stole his ZS 110-60 Champion motorcycle worth N115, 000.
He said the accused was arrested while trying to push it away with the aid of a motorcyclist, now at large, adding that during investigation, he confessed to have stolen several motorcycles from different places in Abuja.
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year imprisonment by Judge Mohammed Marafa, with an option of N30, 000 fine.

PoliticsModernity Clashes With Tradition: Ife Chiefs Insist Ooni Is ‘alive’ by DONSMITH123(op): 2:46pm On Jul 30, 2015
Modernity characterised by the social media and citizen journalism clashed with Nigerian tradition, when the Royal Traditional Council of Ile-Ife categorically denied news reports of the death of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade Olubuse II, adding that the paramount Yoruba traditional ruler was “alive and well”, and preparing for his son’s wedding this weekend.

Despite the denial, disbelieving residents of Ife and its environs thronged the Oba’s palace, which was shut to the public, to sympathise with the traditional council and his family, even as his first son, Prince Adetokunbo (Tokunbo) Sijuwade, arrived London onboard a British Airways flight yesterday morning. Tokunbo had departed Lagos Tuesday night the minute he got word of his father’s “condition”. He joined other members of the family comprising Olori Mori Sijawade, the Ooni’s most senior wife; Olori Odun Sijuwade; Olori Ladun Sijuwade; Erelu Abiola Dosunmu, who had a daughter – Oyinade Ademide – for the Ooni; and his nephew Prince Rasak Adewole. Other children from across the world and Nigeria, as well as close family members had also all converged in London wednesday. Upon his arrival, Tokunbo, took full charge of the situation in London, and all members of the family were said to have deferred to him as the their new head.

However, addressing journalists in the House of Chiefs located within the premises of Ile-Oodua Palace of the Ooni, the Lowa of Ife, Oba Joseph Ijaodola, said the reports in the media that the monarch had died in a London hospital from an undisclosed ailment was untrue.

Also speaking, the Secretary, Royal Traditional Council of Ife, the Ladin of Ife, High Chief Adetoye Odewole, said the Ooni was “hale and hearty” and even spoke to the chiefs on the phone a few hours earlier. He said that those behind the death story were enemies of Ife, adding: “As I speak with you, chiefs have not heard anything like that. This is not the first time such a rumour will be carried about our father. “They did it in 1984, also in 2004 and now, these people are coming up with another rumour. Oba Sijuade remains in a sound state of health.”

Commenting in a similar vein, Chairman of Ife Development Board, Prof. Muib Opeloye, said Ife as a town with rich tradition has its way of managing its affairs. Opeloye maintained that the Ooni was preparing for his son’s wedding and urged the public not to panic.
Despite their assurances to the public, the entrance of the Ooni’s palace was firmly shut to visitors and only newsmen, chiefs and relations of Oba Sijuade were allowed into the premises.

Many indigenes and residents of Ife had converged on the palace but were prevented from entering by the palace guards.

The Osun State Government on its part, kept mum on the death of the Ooni, as the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, did not issue a statement nor did he pay a visit to the ancient town of Ife to confirm the truth of the traditional monarch’s death.
Also, at the family house of the Ooni, the Ogbooru Olubuse compound, there was no sign that the monarch had died as people were seen going about their normal duties.

The denial by the traditional council and refusal to confirm his death by the state government, notwithstanding, a renowned Christian cleric, Mr. Toluwase Akeredolu, said if indeed the Ooni was dead, it meant he died as a born again Christian, having confessed his sins recently.

Akeredolu said he was privileged to have ministered to the monarch a few weeks ago, adding that the Ooni, a staunch Christian, confessed all his sins to God after the ministration.

The Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) pastor, who hails from Ido-Ani in Ondo State, said he lived as a youth in Ile-Ife and got to know Oba Sijuwade during a revival programme he organised in the ancient town.

He recalled that the monarch, at one of the last crusades he attended publicly, announced his acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Lord and saviour.

According to him, “Oba Sijuwade told the congregation at the last crusade we organised in Ile-Ife that he had forsaken sin and accepted Christ as his Lord and personal saviour. He confessed publicly that he will live the rest of his life to serve the Almighty God.”
Oba Sijuwade who was said to have died in a London hospital on Tuesday evening, had in 2010 dropped the title of “Alayeluya”, meaning omnipresent, saying he took the decision out of reverence and fear of God.

Meanwhile, more facts have emerged on how the Ooni, who fell ill last Thursday, was whisked away to the United Kingdom.
According to close family sources, the Ooni had suddenly collapsed in Ife and was rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, where a team of doctors led by Dr. Tony Akintomide attended to him.

A quick decision, said the sources, was taken to fly him to the UK the next day from Ibadan airport.
Accordingly, a private jet, which was given special immigration clearance to depart for the UK from Ibadan, which is not an international airport, was leased to fly him, a few family members and Dr. Akintomide to London.

However, a source said there was insufficient aviation fuel in Ibadan, which compelled the pilot to make a detour to Abuja, where the airplane refuelled and departed for London.

On arriving the London Luton Airport, he was taken by ambulance to The London Clinic, one of the UK’s largest private hospitals with premises across Harley Street and Devonshire Place in the centre of London.

The family source said Akintomide, alongside specialists at the hospital who had the Ooni’s medical history, succeeded in stabilising him at the weekend.

Up till Tuesday morning, the Ooni was said to be in high spirits and was talking with family members who had come to visit him, but suddenly his situation took a turn for the worse and despite spirited efforts to revive him, he was said to have joined his ancestors by the evening of that day.

His body, the source confirmed, was moved to a morgue in London.
Given the situation, the family source disclosed that two major problems have arisen, the first being the marriage of his son, Prince Adegbite Sijuwade.

“Ife tradition forbids any form of celebration when an Ooni ascends to his ancestors, so we are waiting for Tokunbo’s directive on the matter.

“However, there are others who believe that the wedding could go ahead since it is not scheduled to take place in Ife and Ooni had lived to a ripe old age of 85, which calls for celebration. So there is no basis for unnecessary prevarication,” the source said.
The second issue has to do with one of the Ooni’s closest friends and an Ife high chief, Chief Alex Duduyemi, who is the Asiwaju of Ile-Ife.

Duduyemi, he divulged, was meant to start his 80th birthday celebrations with a book launch at the Lagos Metropolitan Club in Victoria Island today.

“And the grand finale of the celebrations was billed for the ancient city of Ile-Ife on August 9. Now it is uncertain if this will be cancelled or shifted to another location,” he said.

The source also confirmed that major contenders for the Ile-Ife traditional throne are beginning to emerge. Major contenders include Prince E.O.C Eludoyin, a Lagos-based prominent businessman and close associate of Chief Bola Tinubu. Eludoyin is the Chairman of Paragon Holdings, which owns the popular Ikeja Mall in Lagos.

Another likely successor is Prince Ade Adefioye, who is an Executive Director at Wema Bank Plc and is a close confidant of the Osun State governor.

Also, there is Prince Adetokunbo Sijuwade, who is the crown prince of the Sijuwade royal family.
Others include Prince Akin Adewuyi, who is a Deputy Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS); and Prince Adegbambo Ademiluyi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

In addition, another likely contender is Prince Adedamola Aderemi, a lawyer and the grandson of the 49th Ooni of Ife, Sir Adesoji Aderemi, who was also the first Nigerian Governor of the old Western Region pre-independence.

Prince Aderemi is said to have a very enviable pedigree, as in addition to being the grandson to the predecessor of Oba Sijuwade, his maternal grandfather, Alhaji Dauda Adegbenro, was also the Premier of the old Western Region.

Prince Aderemi is married to the granddaughter of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a renowned politician and statesman, another former Premier of the Western Region, a former Federal Commissioner for Finance in the 1970s, and a two-time presidential candidate in the Second Republic.
