Senate President Ahmad Lawan has said he will not be a “rubber stamp” to the executive. Mohammed Isa, a media aide to Lawan, quoted the senate president as saying this when he received Women Parliamentarians, a group led by Joy Emordi, former senator representing Anambra north. Lawan said it is “laughable” that he is being referred to as “rubber stamp”, vowing that the senate under him would challenge the government of President Muhammadu Buhari but “in a decent manner. There is no time that I will ever be a rubber stamp,” he said. “YES, I BELIEVE IN PRESIDENT BUHARI AS A PERSON AND I BELIEVE IN MY PARTY, THE APC, BUT I BELIEVE THAT OUR PROBLEMS AS NIGERIANS ARE NIGERIAN PROBLEMS. THEY ARE NEITHER APC NOR PDP PROBLEMS, THEY ARE NIGERIAN PROBLEMS THAT REQUIRE NIGERIAN SOLUTION. SO, WE HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER. “WE WILL BE THERE FOR THE EXECUTIVE ARM OF GOVERNMENT ALL THE TIME IN MOVING THIS COUNTRY FORWARD. WE ARE GOING TO CHALLENGE THE EXECUTIVE IN A MANNER THAT IS DECENT BUT DECISIVE. AS A MINISTER, YOU HAVE TO DO YOUR MINISTERIAL JOB WELL. WE WILL MAKE GOVERNMENT APPOINTEES TO DO WHAT IS REQUIRED OF THEM. WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUES CONFRONTING US. IT IS NOT GOING TO BE EASY, BUT WE HAVE TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP THAT HAVE MUTUAL RESPECT, COLLABORATION AND PARTNERSHIP. IT IS ACHIEVABLE.” The senate president urged the women to be more involved in politics, saying: “the political space in the country is wide enough to accommodate our women.” On her part, Emordi urged Lawan and his colleagues to work for the good of Nigerians. A South African court on Friday acquitted Duduzane Zuma, the son of former president Jacob Zuma, of manslaughter charges over a fatal late-night car crash in 2014. Duduzane, 35, had pleaded not guilty at a magistrates' court in Johannesburg to causing the death of Phumzile Dube after his Porsche hit a minibus. One woman died in the crash, three others were injured and another passenger died in hospital weeks later. Magistrate Tebogo Thupaatlase said the state had failed to prove the manslaughter charges beyond reasonable doubt. "The accused is found not guilty," he said. "None of the evidence presented established that there was anything that a reasonable man in the position of the accused, on that night would have foreseen." Zuma had testified that his car had spun out of control after hitting a pool of water. Amid tight security, former president Zuma was at the court to support his son, as well as Duduzane's twin sister Duduzile. "The court assessed the situation well and the court's decision has made me happy," Jacob Zuma told reporters after the ruling. Zuma, 76, was forced to resign in February 2018 over corruption allegations centred around the Gupta business family, who reportedly held such sway that they picked cabinet ministers. Duduzane was previously employed by the Guptas. Jacob Zuma, who has five wives and at least 20 children, has been charged with 16 counts of graft linked to an arms deal from before he became president. A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, collation agent for the 2019 presidential election in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State, Bukar Bukar Petrol, has claimed that the All Progressives Congress, APC, took advantage of the bombings that occurred in Damboa town during the February 23, 2019 election, to rig the election. Petrol, who was the 27th petitioner witness, made the disclosure at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja on Thursday. He said due to the insecurity situation caused by Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State, the 100 polling units in the 10 wards of the Damboa Local Government Area were sited on the premises of the Local Government Secretariat in Damboa town. The PDP agent stated that the distribution of sensitive electoral materials in the local government area which ought to commence by 4am was deliberately delayed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, officers till 8am and voting actually commenced at some few minutes past 10am. Petrol informed the tribunal that in the course of voting, there were bombings in the area which made everybody to scamper to safety. He said when they returned to the venue of the election, the Civilian Joint Task Force, had taken over the election and the APC allegedly took advantage of the situation to rig. According to Petrol: “When the explosions occurred, everybody ran away. After the explosions, the Civilian JTF took over the election and the 3rd respondent (APC) took advantage of the situation to rig the election.” Petrol said he subsequently reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer, the military intelligence, the Criminal Investigation Bureau, the military police, head of the National Orientation Agency and his party, the PDP. https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/apc-took-advantage-of-bombings-in-borno-on-presidential-election-day-to-rig-pdp-agent/amp/

The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), has said that he cannot speak on the decision of the Muhammadu Buhari-led government to drop the prosecution of Gombe Central senator, Danjuma Goje, because he did not have details of the matter. Sagay said this during an interview Tuesday The senior advocate, however, said he would not be in support of the move if it was done for political reasons. He said he could not speak on the matter because he did not know why the case was dropped. Sagay said, “I’m not aware of the reason because my answer must depend on the reason. I’m going to find out. Let’s put it this way: if there is a good case against him, then it is withdrawn, it’s not justified. “One really needs to know the reason; I don’t want to start condemning him without finding out why. But if there’s a good case and that case is withdrawn for political reasons, I cannot support it. “That’s all I can say, but there may be a justifiable reason which I don’t know yet. So, I’m not going to condemn (the Federal Government) yet without enough knowledge of the circumstances.” https://punchng.com/why-i-cant-comment-on-fgs-decision-to-drop-gojes-case-sagay/amp/

According to the report, some of the leaders of PDP had on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, endorsed Senator Adeleke to fly the flag of the party in the next Osun State governorship election set to hold in 2022. Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana has said that the Senate ad hoc committee was wrong to have questioned embattled lawmaker, Senator Elisha Abbo, on Tuesday. Falana said although the Senate had a right to discipline its members, Abbo could not be questioned because the matter was already in court and questioning him now would amount to subjudice. He noted that Abbo had already been arraigned before a magistrate court, pleaded not guilty and granted bail. The senior advocate noted that the Senate rules clearly state that when a matter is before a court of law, the Senate cannot discuss such a matter. The activist said, “We all watched the video showing the senator allegedly assaulting a lady but we all demanded justice and the police have already arraigned him. The matter is now before a court and Senator Abbo is a defendant. “It is, therefore, wrong for the Senate to sit and investigate a matter publicly while the matter is ongoing in court. That is subjudice. The Senate rules are clear that when a matter is in court, the Senate does not dabble into it.” Abbo, who represents Adamawa-North senatorial district, was caught on video assaulting a shop attendant in a intimacy gadget shop. The video sparked outrage across the country with different rights groups demanding his prosecution. The Senate President subsequently set up an ad hoc committee headed by Senator Sam Egwu of Ebonyi State while Lagos Central lawmaker, Senator Tinubu; Senator Stella Oduah of Anambra-North, Mathew Urhoghide, Dauda Aliu Jika, Sani Musa, and Danladi Sankara are members. The committee was asked to submit its report within two weeks. Before the committee could sit on Tuesday, however, the police had already arraigned Abbo the previous day. https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/why-remi-tinubu-other-senators-have-no-right-to-question-abbo-over-adult-toy-shop-assault-falana/amp/

The Presidency on Tuesday clarified that the National Livestock Transformation Plan of the Federal Government was not suspended. While advising Nigerians not to worry about the 30 days ultimatum given by the Coalition of Northern Groups over the Ruga settlement project, the Presidency advised the CNG to respect the Office of the President which, it said, took the decision in the national interest. The Senior Policy Adviser (Agriculture Interventions Coordination) in the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Andrew Kwasari, stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja during a training session organised for the executives of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and its officers in eight states considered to be flashpoints. The spokesperson for CNG, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in giving the 30-day ultimatum to state governors to accept the Ruga programme, had said the conspiracy to weaken the North had been perpetrated with the active connivance of some leaders from the region. But Kwasari dismissed the threat, saying a large section of the citizenry was in solidarity with Buhari over the suspension of Ruga policy. He said, “I think the President has the overwhelming support and his decision has resonated with the majority. I think we should not worry about the threats. They don’t earn my respect in anyway, I can’t support them. My support is for the President and the people of Nigeria. “Their threat is divisive, I think these people should listen to the majority of this country and above all, accord respect to the office of the President, if they are true citizens of this country. “The President took the decision to suspend the Ruga policy in the interest and common good of all Nigerians. Are we supposed to be concerned about rallying around the President who has taken a decision or a portion of society that feels otherwise for whatsoever reason? I don’t know whatever evidence that they have.” Asked if he would demand their arrest, Kwasari said he was sure that the security architecture of the country had taken a strong stance against hate speech and divisive rhetoric. “So, I’m sure that the appropriate age cues are considering whatever action they will take. What is within my power is to make sure that the President’s directive is obeyed”, he stated. He said, “The training was informed by the need to build the capacity of the stakeholders that we consider to be pivotal in the peace process in Benue and Nasarawa states. “If you are going to mediate in these two states in the farmers-herders crisis, then you should be talking to MACBAN and All Farmers’ Association with a view to building and enhancing their capacity on mediation and dialogue.” “Peace is very essential in the communal peace and dialogue plan. There has to be initiative that will bring about understanding among communities, most importantly among the pastoral communities and other communities in the country. What is missing now is the peace that had existed in the past between the pastoralists and the communities across the nation.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/disregard-northern-groups-threat-on-ruga-presidency-tells-nigerians/amp/
