Politics / Court Asked To Sack Buhari’s Chief Of Staff Abba Kyari, Boss Mustapha by doris00: 8:01am On Jul 05, 2019
The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and the Action Peoples Party (APP) have approached an Abuja Federal High Court, to order the vacation from office political appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari, who are yet to be re-appointed.

Among presidential aides the coalition is seeking their sack include: Buhari’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity and Special Adviser, Femi Adesina, amongst others.

The plaintiff stated that it is an aberration, for the presidential aides whose tenure ended with the expiration of the president’s first term, to continue in office without being re-appointed.

Those sued as defendants in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/762/2019, include; President Buhari, Abba Kyari, Boss Mustapha, Garba Shehu and Femi Adesina, as 1st to 5th defendants.

The plaintiffs want an order of the court to restrain Kyari, Mustapha, Shehu, Adesina (2nd to 5th defendants) and any other personal staff of the president, from parading themselves as the Chief of Staff, SGF and media aides to the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, until official reappointment is made.

They also prayed the court to order the defendants and other aide or personal staff of the president appointed prior to May 29, 2019 and still acting in that capacity without reappointment, to return and pay into federation account, all their emoluments, salaries and allowances received from May 29, 2019 till the day they vacate office.

The plaintiffs, in the suit filed on July 3, 2019 by their counsel, Chibuzor Ezike formulated three questions for the determination of the court, one of which is, “Whether by Sections 151(3), 152 and 171(1)(2)(a and e) and (6) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended, the first defendant (Buhari) has the power to extend and elongate the tenure of the office of the 2nd to 5th defendants and any of his aides appointed pursuant to Sections 151(1) and 171 (2) (a and e) of the constitution without first terminating their tenure at the end of his four year term on the 29th, May, 2019?

“Whether the tenure elongation and continued service of the 2nd to 5th defendants and all other aides of the first defendant, despite the expiration of the President’s four year tenure on May 29, without official reappointment taken and subscription of oath of office and oath of allegiance is not in clear breach of Section 151(3) 171 (6) of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended?

“Whether the 2nd to 5th defendants or any other aide of the president appointed pursuant to Section 151 and 171(2)(a and e) are entitled to any official emoluments and benefit with respect to their offices as from May 29, 2019, when the first four year tenure of the president ended?”

CUPP added in a statement that the “Former SGF, Boss Mustapha is still in that office, Sen. Ita Enang is still parading as special adviser to the president on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Abba Kyari as Chief of Staff, Adesina is still appearing in TV programs as Special Adviser to the President on Media, likewise Garba Shehu parading as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity.

“These among other officials of the presidency are still illegally occupying their former offices without any lawful authority as the president have not made any announcement to the nation that he has appointed or reappointment officers onto thee positions,” it said.

According to CUPP, “President Buhari’s inability to appoint personal/presidential aides or indeed any other appointments over one month after taking oath of office is a sign that the president is still not yet ready to govern and lacks understanding of the urgency needed to fix Nigeria.”

Politics / Fashola To Nigerians: Let’s Work More; Prosperous Nation Comes Not By Talking by doris00: 8:08pm On Jul 04, 2019
Former Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, on Thursday advised Nigerians to talk less and work more, saying a better and prosperous country cannot come into existence by talking, but by dint of hard work.

Fashola lamented that people dwell so much on talking about “what is not happening” in the country  instead of giving prominence to what is being done, stressing that “we can’t talk our away out of our problem but can only work our way out it.”

The former Governor Lagos state made this known while inaugurating Gasco Marine’s N2.2bn Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Plant (mother station) at Onijaganjagan, Abeokuta, Ogun state.

He urged other Nigerians to emulate the indigenous investors in Gasco Marine and invest in the gas subsector to drive cleaner air and environment, generate employment and reduce gas flaring.

“While some people are busy talking some people are actually working to change things for the better. That is what this plant is all about. Young people are still actively planning and getting things done. This group has done something great, putting the gas into more productive use.

“We can talk about climate change and how we need to convert bad fuel, coal; diesel into cleaner but it won’t go away by just talking. This group has done something about that again by making sure there is cleaner fuel, there is cleaner source of fuel to use.

“We talk about lack of money to do business, a group of people have said no, we can access pension fund to do infrastructure, this project has delivered that again so when we talk about ease of doing business everybody has a role to play. We can’t talk this into existence; you have to work it into existence.”

Politics / INEC Empowered To Trim Political Parties From 91 To Seven —lawyer by doris00: 2:30pm On Jul 04, 2019
The House of the Representative has resolved to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the rowdy session and attempt by some members to grab the mace during plenary on Wednesday.

This was sequel to a matter of privilege raised by Rep. Benjamin Kalu (APC-Abia) at the plenary on Thursday.

Earlier, Kalu said that it was disappointing to see ranking members engage in a struggle to displace the mace during sitting.

He alleged that Rep. Gogo Bright (PDP-Rivers) carried the mace from the upper bracket and put it on the lower bracket during plenary which was not supposed to be so.

Kalu said that he was a new member, who joined the National Assembly with a patriotic zeal to contribute to nation building, saying that the event breached his privileges.

He urged the House to set up the committee to investigate the matter to forestall future reoccurrences.

In his ruling, the Speaker of the House, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila (APC-Lagos) agreed that the scene created by some members breached the collective privileges of the house.

Gbajabiamila said an ad hoc committee would be constituted to look into the matter and that the members would be announced before the end of the day.

Politics / My Best Not Good Enough Yet – President Buhari Admits by doris00: 7:39am On Jul 04, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has admitted that the performance of his administration in the power sector was “not good enough.”

He said that this called for more efforts by Electricity Distribution Companies to provide the needed resources and technical expertise.

Buhari assured that his government would play its own part by improving the transmission of electricity.

The Nigerian leader stated in Abuja on Wednesday when the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’ Edo Ewuare II, led members of the Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and chiefs on a visit to the President at the Presidential Villa.

The Benin monarch, who sought Buhari’s intervention on the poor power supply situation in Edo State, had described it as a “pathetic situation.”
The President, however, appealed to Nigerians for calm, while urging them to be patient with the Discos to deliver on their mandate.

A statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, quoted him as saying that though his administration had put in its best to improve power in the past years, especially improvement in gas supplies, the performance was not good enough.

“We are building infrastructure. We are doing our best, but, obviously, our best is not good enough yet”, the Presidency quoted Buhari as saying.
Buhari praised the monarchs for their combined efforts in tackling trafficking in persons and rehabilitating the victims, who were repatriated back home.

“I am pleased that you have taken up the fight against human trafficking and I know the effect of your intervention will be felt beyond our borders,” the President told his visitors.

Buhari spoke on the Benin-Abuja Road project and his administration’s efforts to develop the agricultural sector, “promising that more will be done to diversify and strengthen the Nigerian economy.”

Oba Ewuare II, while congratulating Buhari for winning a second term, prayed God to guide him in picking a formidable cabinet.

Politics / Why Buhari Suspended Cattle Settlement Project by doris00: 6:52am On Jul 04, 2019
News of the suspension was broken yesterday by Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi after a meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House in Abuja.

Many Nigerians, including Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) Femi Falana, Dele Adesina and Paul Ananaba, as well as elder statesmen Pa Ayo Fasanmi and Chief Ayo Adebanjo have been hailing the suspension.

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom and the pan-Igbo socio-political group Ohanaeze have also described the suspension as a step in the right direction.

The Ruga project was not integrated with the NLTP agreed upon by the 36 governors at the Vice President chaired National Economic Council (NEC).

The President also uncovered how contract sums for various aspects of the Ruga project were heavily overpriced.

While solar panels were put at tens of millions of naira each, boreholes were to be procured at an average cost of N20 million each.

But a new implementation committee for the project, under the auspices of NLTP, will soon take off.

The committee might comprise members of NEC, the National Food Security Council (NFSC) and the Federal Executive Council.

According to a source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, the President only suspended the Cattle Settlement Project because officials of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development derailed from what governors agreed on at NEC.

The source said: “The President opted for the suspension of Ruga Project because it was at variance with what was agreed upon by the governors at the National Economic Council (NEC) and other levels of government on the National Livestock Transformation Programme (NLTP).

Read also: Ohanaeze rejects Ruga settlements in Igboland
“The officials of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, who are the promoters of the controversial Ruga Settlement Project, went overboard. They proceeded with the implementation of the scheme as opposed to the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP) developed by the National Economic Council and approved by the Federal Government.

“The President, on hearing about the Ruga matter, first expressed surprise about the programme, and then got angry on finding out that it was different from the NLTP which NEC (the governors) and the Federal Government had agreed on.

“The President then ordered a swift review of what Ruga was about and sought clarifications on its connection with the NLTP.”

“Prof. Osinbajo had also strongly resisted the Ruga plan, arguing that it made nonsense of the NLTP, a very deliberate and elaborate plan developed by NEC, under his watch, and a plan which the Federal Government had okayed.

“The President later discovered that not only was Ruga not under the VP, but that the programme was not aligned to the NLTP. He then ordered a suspension Tuesday afternoon,” the source said, pleading not to be named because he was not permitted to talk to the media.

The grey areas which heated up the polity are:

sidelining of NLTP and its Action Plan;
lack of consultations with the governors/ states on Ruga;
gazetting of land in states without deferring to state governments; and
high cost of implementing some components of the project
The source added: “When news about Ruga Project broke out, it immediately raised widespread controversy as state governors and other interests expressed surprise on how it was developed.

“They alleged that there were no consultations with states, especially regarding land, which, according to the law, is vested in the governors.

“The President was annoyed that senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and other government officials purport to use gazetted lands in the states for the purposes of building Ruga settlements without carrying along the states, creating a wrong impression that the Federal Government was trying to take over land belonging to states and the people in those states.

“There was visible panic in the Villa on Monday when senior officials in the President’s office were trying to get information about Ruga and its connection to the NLTP, although some in the office had tried to suggest that Ruga and the NLTP are the same.”

Responding to a question, the source said: ”It was also discovered that the contract sums allocated for various aspects of the programme were heavily overpriced. For instance, purchases of solar panels were put at tens of million naira each while boreholes were also to be procured at an average cost of N20 million each.

“This is why the government was careful in suspending action on Ruga Settlement,” the source said.

Politics / Elisha Abbo:apc, senate Under Fire For Not Taking Action Against Omo-agege by doris00: 6:35am On Jul 04, 2019
Reno Omokri, a former Media Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has berated the Nigerian Senate and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, for not taking action against Senator Ovie Omo-Agege when he allegedly assaulted his colleagues and made away with the mace.

Omokri was reacting to the position taken by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the trending issue concerning Senator Elisha Abbo, who physically assaulted a lady in a intimacy gadget shop in Abuja.

The National Working Committee of the PDP, through its Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, had on Wednesday said that as a law-abiding and upstanding party, it detests and completely condemns such act of lawlessness and callousness as exhibited in the video and will therefore never condone it.

The embattled senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District had since apologised to Nigerians, the PDP and women in general.

Following his apology, Omokri, who was among the first persons to condemn the lawmaker’s action, tweeted, “Omo Agege was accused of physically assaulting his colleagues and stealing the mace.

“The @NGRPresident & @OfficialAPCNg rewarded him with the Deputy @NGRSenate President.

“Abbo was similarly accused and @OfficialPDPNig condemned him and disciplined him.”

Politics / Reno Omokri Reacts To Senator Elisha Abbo Beating A Woman by doris00: 8:38am On Jul 03, 2019
Reno Omokri, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has joined the long list those calling for the arrest and prosecution of the Senator representing Adamawa North District in the National Assembly, Elisha Abbo, for assaulting a lady in an adult toys shop in Abuja.

He said the Senator should be prosecuted and jailed for his action.

Abbo in the viral video on Tuesday was seen descending on the woman after she pleaded with him not to physically assault the shopowner.

The lawmaker had accused the shopowner of calling him a drunk.

Reports had that the Senator has not been arrested despite case been reported to Police station in Abuja.

The video has since stirred controversy online as Nigerians and prominent individuals are calling for his arrest.

Reacting, Omokri said Senator Abbo should be immediately rejected, following the evidence against him.

In a series of tweets, the former presidential aide said the action of the Senator was an indication that he is unfit to be a lawmaker.

“Not only should Senator Abbo be arrested, prosecuted & jailed, but the policeman that was with him should be disciplined. Additionally, the lady he assaulted should get damages. Abbo can use some of the money he spends on relaxing his hair to pay her #FreeLeahSharibu #RenosDarts

“I call on the @OfficialPDPNig to immediately repudiate Senator Abbo in the face of overwhelming video evidence proving that he is not a man of fit and proper character to hold the distinguished office of a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria #FreeLeahSharibu #RenosDarts,” he tweeted.

Politics / Adamawa Guber: Drama As APC Withdraws Election Petition Against Gov. Fintiri by doris00: 6:45am On Jul 03, 2019
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa has filed a motion seeking the leave of the Adamawa State Election Petition Tribunal to withdraw the petition it filed contesting the declaration of Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri as the winner of the governorship election in the state.

Ex-governor Jibrilla Bindow lost the 2019 governorship contest to Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

But he declined to challenge the outcome of the elections while his party, the APC, insisted on heading to the tribunal.

At the resumed sitting on Tuesday in Yola, APC’s motion to withdraw the petition was, however, accompanied by disorder as another team of legal representatives, also for the APC, claimed it has filed a counter motion dismissing that claim.

The lead Counsel to APC, Smart Ukpanah, informed the tribunal that his client had filed a motion seeking to discontinue the case.

Aliyu Bakari, APC Vice Chairman (Adamawa Central), also announced appearance for the party alongside Smart Ukpanah.

But Eze Okoye Esq., led a team of other lawyers to also announce appearance for the APC, just like Smart Ukpanah had done.

Mohammed Adamu, APC Treasurer in the state, took side with the Okoye led legal team.

After the motion of withdrawal was mentioned, Okoye objected and told the tribunal that he has filed a counter motion on behalf of his client, the APC.

In the ensuing confusion, Justice, A A Adebara, Chairman of the tribunal, asked the opposing APC counsels to go and sort things out.

The hearing was then adjourned to July 15 to hear both the motion and the substantive matter.

Commenting on the motion after the sitting, A T Shehu, counsel to PDP said, “we have no objection about the motion seeking to withdraw the petition as filed by the petitioner.”

Sports / Brazil 2-0 Argentina: Jesus & Firmino Send Messi Home As Tite's Side Reach Final by doris00: 3:32am On Jul 03, 2019
Brazil booked their place in the Copa America final, thanks to goals in either half from Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino to defeat Argentina 2-0 on Wednesday morning. The Copa America hosts put in a composed performance to deny their age-old rivals, who hit the woodwork twice as they attempted to get back into the contest.
Argentina created the first chance of note, as midfielder Leandro Paredes took aim from a full 45 yards out. The swirling shot curled just over the bar and had Brazil stopper Allison scrambling.
Still, it was Brazil who opened the scoring, cutting through the Argentinian backline with ease. Dani Alaves rode a number of tackles before a perfect no-look pass to Roberto Firmino. The striker drilled the ball across the box to fellow attacker Gabriel Jesus who turned the ball into the net, past Armani to give the hosts the lead.
Argentina pushed hard to get a foothold in the contest and hit the woodwork eleven minutes later through the head of Sergio Aguero. A smart free-kick from Leo Messi picked out the Manchester City attacker, yet his looping header had Allison beaten but agonizingly rattled the crossbar.
Lionel Scaloni’s side had a point to prove in the second half, and started brightly as Lautaro Martínez’s shot which he didn’t quite connect with was gathered by Allison, but the signs where there that La Albaceleste were more than capable of mounting a comeback.
Yet Brazil still remained a threat on the counter-attack, and just before the hour mark Phillipe Coutinho found himself in the Argentina box with time to shot, however, his effort flew well over.
Argentina was denied by the woodwork for a second time in the contest, as Lionel Messi latched onto a blocked shot by Lautaro Martinez, his first-time strike had Allison well beaten, yet it rebounded off the post.
Unperturbed the visitors continued to impress in their rivals and came close as Leo Messi’s free-kick looked bound for the top corner, but Allison was equal to it and plucked the ball into his arms.
That save would prove to be a turning point as Brazil killed off the tie thanks to the determination of Gabriel Jesus. The Manchester City attacker broke up the pitch avoiding two challenges before squaring to Roberto Firmino, who applied the deftest of touches to put Brazil 2-0 up and into the Copa America final for the first time since 2007.
