The World Pharmacists Day campaign is led by International Pharmaceutical Federation(FIP) which is held every 25th September as an avenue to promote the pharmacy profession worldwide.


The theme for this year is : Pharmacy united in action for a healthier world .

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PHARMACY
According to Greek legends written centuries ago, the Greek god of Medicine, Asclepius, delegated the compounding of his remedies to Hygieia, his apothecary or pharmacist.
As such healing and pharmacy went hand-in-hand and were often thought of as the same practice.

The line between pharmacy and medicine began to be defined by the eighth century and was firmly established in the 17th century as physicians could no longer prepare medications for their patients themselves.

The field transformed yet again with the onslaught of World War II where new drugs were constantly introduced into the market broadening the role of the pharmacist.

THE ROLES OF PHARMACY IN HEALTHCARE
Today’s pharmacist performs multiple vital roles
making them indispensable to health care.

1. ROLE IN DISPENSING
The tasks bestowed on pharmacists include identifying and providing people with the right medication, stocking/restocking of all essential medicines, staying ahead of medicine expiry dates, patient counseling, compounding, drug information etc.

A contributing factor to why some people might be oblivious to the role of a pharmacist in health is due to their familiarity with patent medicine ventors/chemists who are not professionals.

A lot of people do not know that there is a draconian difference between a chemist and a pharmacy.

a. PHARMACY: A Pharmacy is a premise overseen by a licensed pharmacist that carry out activities like counseling, patient care, compounding and preparation of medicines along with dispensing of medical prescriptions (prescription , controlled and over-the-counter medicines) from a Registered Medical Practitioner.
Pharmacies are generally larger in size and carry a wider range of medicines and consumables not found in a chemist.

b. CHEMIST: Patent medicine stores/chemist are lower-tier retail outlets, with no pharmacist , who sell over-the-counter drugs(those sold directly to a consumer without a prescription), chemical products and household remedies.

They might also sell over-the-counter family planning methods, especially condoms, oral contraceptives, and emergency contraception.
They usually have storefronts, product displays, and a counter.

Many have a small room in the back, separated by a curtain or door, for examinations and treatment.

2. ROLE IN QUALITY ASSURANCE
The menace of counterfeit (fake) and adulterated drugs have been linked to illegal drug distributors.

In their quest for cheap drugs patent medicine vendors might end up acquiring substandard drugs which leads to a patient getting a sub therapeutic dose.

Those who operate patent medicine stores do not have grounded knowledge in drugs and as such are oblivious to the nature, mechanism of action, interactions and contraindications of most drugs.

In addition they do not know how to authenticate many drugs gotten from distributors as such more prone to dish out adulterated, substandard or fake drugs unknowingly.

They might also be oblivious to the proper storage of thermolabile drugs as such may end up dispensing denatured drugs.

3. ROLE IN CURTAILING SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Pharmacists have played a role in curtailing the menace of drug abuse in Nigerian.


Drugs like Codeine, Tramadol, Pentazocine, Promethazine, Benzodiazepine class, etc have been prone to addiction. Drug addicts try to maneuver their way to get those drugs, some have went to the extent of forging prescription with the doctor signature.

I once caught an addict who forged a doctor's signature demanding a pack of Pentazocine. On seeing the oddity of the prescription I asked where he was coming from so I can meet the doctor, he told me so I followed him to see the doctor. He only went and showed me a patient claiming the patient was in serious pain that was why . I then went to consult the nurse on duty. Only for me to turn around and can't find the patient , he ran away. This happened in a hospital.

4. ROLE IN SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF DRUGS
The pharmacist is the drug expert trained in the correct and safe use of drugs.
Drugs are one of the greatest inventions known to man. A drug is "a substance intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease.
However, a common paradox in disease management is: every drug is a potential poison. The dose determine that a thing is not poison.

So when does a drug becomes a poison? Simply put, when it is misused or abused.
This is done by using medicines other than how it is prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner( Self medication)

In self medication, the illnesses may not be correctly recognized by individuals due to lack of training. Hence, the drugs may not be the right one as such the possibility of drug harm is largely increased.

Conversly, a patient might know the illness but demographics might discourage the use of the drugs . There are drugs pregnant women or children should not take, or that people with certain diseases should not take. Such drugs can become poisons to those individuals when taken.
Another problem is taking improper dosages. Drugs are precisely dosed so they are not harmful. If improperly taken, such drugs become poisonous and deadly.

Considering the several variables that may make a drug poisonous, the pharmacist is in the best place to give advice regarding drugs.

5. ROLE IN DRUG DISTRIBUTION
Pharmacists and other bodies have worked tirelessly to curtail the chaotic drug distribution problem in Nigeria.

In 2012, the New Drug Distribution System was established to increase access to high-quality, low-cost medications at all levels of health-care delivery while also reducing the activities of charlatans( those who distribute counterfeit. or adulterated drugs).

Noncompliance with regulatory agencies such as the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria (PCN) and the NAFDAC results in disciplinary measures.

6. PHARMACISTS ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE
The best part is this is that a pharmacist is always ready to handle any drug related problem even without an appointment.

Unlike a doctor you do not need an appointment to see a pharmacist.

The best bet in the continuous safe and effective use of drugs are the Pharmacists.

May it be our goal to consult a pharmacist when the need arises.

As a commemoration of the world pharmacist day with the theme "Pharmacy: Always trusted for your health".

I will like to use this medium to enlighten the public in the roles of the pharmacist in health care.

¶ Pharmacist are not just drug sellers.

There is a skewed perception of pharmacists being just drug sellers or dispensers just like people in the patent medicine store or chemist. Yes that is partially true but that is a microcosm of what we do.


A pharmacist also compound drugs and extemporaneous preparations to specific patients when the need arises.

A pharmacist can also provide patient counseling on the right way to taking medication and maintaining good health.

He/she also plays a role in counseling patients on smoking cessation, drug abuse, alcohol addiction and other toxic substances.

A pharmacist does not only dispense drugs but provide pharmaceutical care to the patient.

¶ Community pharmacists have diverse roles
A community Pharmacist can also provide medical checkup services such as blood pressure measurement, temperature, auscultation, first aid services etc

Aside dispensing, pharmacist are active in cold chain management and administration of vaccines, patient counseling and medication therapy management to better understand the drugs you are about to take and any caution if there is.



¶ It takes a lot of schooling to be a pharmacist:

It takes a total of 5-6years of rigorous training to finish the pharmacy degree program, this is excluding a one year internship.

Pharmacists are well trained professionals on drugs and drug related information, no health professional knows it better than them.

A pharmacist in summary is a drug expert.

¶ A Pharmacist provide drug information:

Pharmacists are the hub for drug information.
Both health care professionals and patients consult pharmacists on drug information.

A pharmacist tells the patient which drugs to take with or without food, which drugs should not be taken at the same, what drug is not recommended for you or not etc.

Patients who are non compliant to the Pharmacist's instructions are at risk of exacerbating the illness or reducing their quality of life.


¶ Pharmacists can save you from spending more:
There are times a doctor will prescribe expensive drugs to a patient and if that patient is not drug insured he might find difficulty in acquiring them.

Most of the time a pharmacist can recommend another drug similar in action but cost effective or the same drug prescribed but at a lower cost by replacing a branded with a generic drug.

A pharmacist can also provides information on rebates and other cost saving tips to help lower cost of medicine.

¶ A pharmacist checkmates a doctor's prescription:

When a doctors prescription enters into the hands of a pharmacist, the pharmacist first authenticates if it is actually from a doctor or the patient is trying to forge it so he can self medicate or abuse the drugs ( drug abuse have become a menace in the society)

If it is truly from a doctor the pharmacist checks for drug-drug interaction, drug food interaction, allergy, adverse effects than might harm the patient in special conditions such as pregnancy, being a child or an old man.

The pharmacist also checks for accuracy and dose of the medication for the patients indication.

He or she then raises any concern to the prescribing doctor and provide recommendation.


¶ Pharmacists work in variety of places:
Most people assume pharmacists only work in the community (community pharmacist) or hospital (hospital pharmacist) .
Pharmacists also work in the government, administration, pharmaceutical companies, public health, academia, research, informatics and management care.

Pharmacists who work in pharmaceutical industries ensure that high quality drugs are being supplied to the public.
They utilized their knowledge on pharmacology, pharmaceutics , biotechnology and pharmaceutical chemistry to further advance the health care system.

Pharmacist in government and administration such as NAFDAC, NDLEA ensure sanity in drug distribution and work in eradication the menace of counterfeit drugs (e.g Dora Akunyuli).
Research institute like NIPRD carry out research on our indigenous plants and were able to discover for promising drugs such as Niprisan ( drug for sickle cell).

¶ Pharmacists are quintessential
Pharmacist are one of the most accessible healthcare professionals in the community.
Pharmacists have an important role in healthcare delivery because of their expertise and also their location within communities that gives them close proximity to patients, such that they are sometimes the first respondents in the healthcare system.

In commemoration of the world Pharmacists Day i will use this opportunity to share what we Pharmacists face in school.

Today is World Pharmacists Day ( 25 September) with the theme "Transforming global health” this is particularly timely as we all face the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This year sees our 10th World Pharmacists Day. We aim to show how pharmacists contribute to a world where everyone benefits from access to safe, effective, quality and affordable medicines and health technologies, as well as from pharmaceutical care services,” said FIP President Dominique Jordan.

“We are one of the key health professions that will help meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Colleagues in all fields of the profession are all individually playing a part in transforming the health of their communities. Together, united by FIP, this is a global effort that we must continue, and that we must also highlight.

Right now, for example, pharmacists all over the world are working tirelessly to stop the spread of the coronavirus/COVID-19, and to ensure people continue to have access to medicines they need. I want to thank pharmacists for their efforts during this difficult time. The 21st century will be the century of pharmacists and I invite colleagues around the world to mark 25 September in their calendars,” Mr Jordan added.

The World Pharmacists Day theme this year is an opportunity to communicate how pharmacists are transforming health through a variety of health services in their communities, including advising on healthy living, vaccinating to prevent disease, and ensuring that medicines are taken correctly, thereby managing diseases well and improving quality of life.

It also covers how pharmaceutical scientists transform and prolong people’s lives by developing safe and effective medicines and vaccines. On the education front, pharmacy educators are transforming outcomes by ensuring that there are enough qualified and competent pharmacists and scientists to meet the growing needs of our societies.

FIP’s member organisations and others around the globe use World Pharmacists Day to highlight the value of the pharmacy profession to stakeholders, and to celebrate pharmacy

Happy International Youth Day

As part of the celebration of the International Youth Day (today); Nigerian Youth Organizations across the country have bestowed on Imo State Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, the title of Pan Nigerian Governor, for his contributions to Youth Empowerment and National Unity and peace.

The Youth Organization known as Coalition of Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders of Nigeria (CENYLON) is made up of Youth Leaders from Arewa, Ohanaeze, Oduduwa, Niger Delta and Middle belt.

The title of Pan-Nigeria Governor was bestowed on Uzodimma by the youths through a letter to the governor signed by the Chairman of the Coalition, Mohammed Salihu Danlami and Director of Programmes, Morgan Ocheukwu, and dated August 10 2020, which was made available to newsmen in Owerri yesterday by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba.

Titled: Conferment of title of Most Outstanding Pan-Nigerian Governor of the Year in celebration of the 2020 International Youth Day”, the letter disclosed that the youths took the decision unanimously at a special convention in Abuja as part of this year’s celebration of International Youth Day.


According to the letter, the youths chose as their theme for the celebration of the youth day this year as “Promoting National Unity, and Peaceful Co-existence among Ethnic Nationalities of Nigeria”.

The letter read: “In furtherance of this theme and having considered record of achievements of governors, particularly their efforts towards promoting national unity and peaceful co-existence in the country, the delegates at the convention unanimously voted to bestow on Your Excellency, Dist. Senator Hope Uzodimma, Executive Governor of Imo State, the title of the Most Outstanding Pan Nigerian Governor and Best Committed Promoter of National Unity and Peaceful Co-existence in celebration of the 2020 International Youth Day”.

The letter said the formal investiture of the governor as the Pan-Nigerian governor will be performed in Owerri in a forthnight.

Emelumba said the governor is humbled by the honour coming from the youths who are championing peaceful co-existence in the country and that he has consequently accepted the title.

International Youth Day ( IYD) is an awareness day designated by the United Nations. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth .The UN’s International Youth Day is a United Nations day of observance but it is not a public holiday.

Background
The UN defines the worlds’ youth as the age group between 15 and 24 years old, making up one-sixth of the human population. Many of these young men and women live in developing countries and their numbers are expected to rise steeply.

The idea for International Youth Day was proposed in 1991 by young people who were gathered in Vienna, Austria, for the first session of the UN’s World Youth Forum. In 1998 a resolution proclaiming August 12 as International Youth Day was adopted, it was endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 1999 and was first observed in 2000..

2020 Theme: Youth Engagement for Global Action
The theme of International Youth Day 2020, “Youth Engagement for Global Action” seeks to highlight the ways in which the engagement of young people at the local, national and global levels is enriching national and multilateral institutions and processes, as well as draw lessons on how their representation and engagement in formal institutional politics can be significantly enhanced.

It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. During IYD, concerts, workshops, cultural events, and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organizations take place around the world.

Suicide is a crime in some parts of the world and Nigeria is one of the eight African countries that criminalize it.
Suicide affects people from all walks of life, sometimes in silence and isolation. It can reach across social, political and economic lines.

Attempting suicide is a criminal offence in Nigeria under Section 327 of the Criminal Code Act, and it carries a penalty of up to one year in prison.
According to Section 326 of the criminal code, a person will be charged with a felony and liable to life imprisonment if she or he aids, counsels, procures another person to kill himself.

These laws are a holdover from when Nigeria was a British colony. However, similar law was abolished in Britain under the Suicide Act of 1961, which happened after Nigeria gained its independence in 1960.
In 2015, Lagos State amended its law to recommend hospital treatment for those who have attempted suicide. But the law has yet to be changed at a national level and is not currently being considered for review.
The recent death of not less than five Nigerians, in the last one month, to suicide is the latest reminder that suicide is a complex and growing crisis in the country.
Yet its frequency is usually under-reported in Nigeria because of the stigma associated with it.
The World Health Organization estimates that there are 9.5 suicides per 100,000 people in Nigeria.
Some common causes are depression and anxiety linked to high levels of poverty.
A 2017 WHO report found that Nigerians have the highest incidences of depression in Africa, with around 7,079,815 suffering from depression, a figure that represents 3.9% of the population.
Suicide doesn’t end the chances of life getting worse for family and friends of anyone who commits suicide, it terminates the possibility of it ever getting any better.

I just give it to these Hollywood guys.
Took me ages and a lot of persuasion to convince my popsy and mom that those people shot/killed/maimed in their movies are not actually dead in real life.

But for some funny reason, my dad is just in love with the 2003 version of Hulk.

The funny thing is that some movie today do not use CGI or film tricks, they do it real life such as fighting(rocky), destruction of vehicles or planes (tenet) or ships(titanic). Only dying remains a film trick for them.
