Jobs/VacanciesOn The Road To Marriage: The Reality Of Securing A Job In Nigeria by dramaticspeak(op): 9:01pm On Mar 16, 2018
I want to crave the indulgence of everyone to read this story carefully and share it if possible because it concerns everyone. Those planning to enter university (jambite), those in the university (undergraduates), those that have finished from the university (graduates), those serving the nation (Corpers) and those done serving the nation (job seekers). I promise you if you will read this carefully, your problem is 50% solved. Everything stated here are real and practical steps taken and lessons learnt along the way. For the sake of confidentiality I would not mention the names of the companies involved and would rather use fictitious names.

I begin. Several factors influence ones choice of course into the Nigerian university system. Its either you write jamb and you are frustrated then you just pick any random course that can get you into the four walls of a university or polytechnic or you write jamb and you don’t get the cutoff for the course you applied for and the university decides to give you a course to pursue. Sometimes even when you get the actual course you want, for those that make merit list or go to a private university several factors influence your choice of that course. Maybe you saw how doctors and lawyers dress and you were moved to study the course so you can dress like that. Probably you had a childhood ambition to pursue a particular discipline and you just want to fulfill that ambition without minding your areas of strength or weakness, your areas of gifting’s or talent. The reality of it all is that most of us do not have a career path.

Now you are in the university. You are an undergraduate. Understand that the Nigerian university system is to everyone’s advantage. How do I mean you might wonder? It provides everyone with a level playing field. Most of what we are taught is theory so do not let anyone look down on you because of the course you studied. It is now left to you to distinguish yourself from the crowd or join the crowd. At the end of every semester it is advisable you volunteer or intern somewhere. Don’t wait for the period of Industrial training alone. Don’t be after money at this stage too. The implication of doing this is that you will gain soft skills and your eye will begin to open to the reality of the Nigerian environment. To even secure a place to do internship you will see the amount of effort you will have to put in if you do not have a very influential connection. The Nigeria of today an ordinary connection would not do you any good. If you want to take the connection path. You will need a really influential connection to get in. But do not deny yourself of the experience of going through the normal route of applying for internships or volunteering somewhere. Some people get retained in the process, if the company sees potential in you. This internships would also help build your cv.

Regarding your studies.please take it very serious and try as much as possible to finish on a 2.1 or first class. The vacancies of today ask for minimum of 2.1 in most cases. Don’t use your hand to shortchange yourself. If you eventually finish on a 2.2 or third class don’t lose hope but be rest assured it is going to be a long route to enter an organization especially the ones that pay well. You will need to find a way to gather experience and skill somewhere before you can come back to apply as an experienced hire. But why take that long route when you can shorten that distance by finishing on a 2.1 or first class.

Your final year project. Most people do not know the value of this that is why they foolishly contract it out to someone to do for them. Buy projects or just reproduce what someone else has done. Take this seriously as it has landed some people jobs. Be intentional about your project topic. Choose something relevant to the happenings in the country. Do not deny yourself of the experience that would be gained through project research. I also plead with Nigerian lecturers not to fail students too but rather show them the way if they are going out of course. I did my project on a popular television station and the MD whom I was privileged to interview after 3 months or trying to pass the gate of that station asked me to ensure I send him a copy of my project when it is done. You can imagine if I wanted to work there, that alone has given me free access.

Now you are a graduate.Don’t get too excited. Your country will not call you up immediately you graduate to come and serve. There is usually a period of waiting before you are called upon to serve your nation. Don’t sit down at home for a day. Go out and look for something to do. You could market for someone, be a salesperson, volunteer somewhere, intern somewhere. By all means find something to do that you can learn from and improve yourself. I was a salesperson. Several soft skills were acquired in the course of my work. I learnt the art of selling, negotiation, handling customers, customer service etc these are skills that would be useful even in a corporate environment. Take certification exams. Start practicing GMAT, GRE, SHL etc as these are the format most standardized test take.

Time to serve. This is one very dicey period in the life of every Nigerian graduate. You know why? If you are not careful, you might end up wasting one year of your life. You will have a lot of free time believe me. It is now up to you to invest it or waste it. I advise you to take trainings and write professional exams. Learn a skill. Continue practicing GMAT, GRE, SHL etc Learn how to write cover letters and cv. Don’t contract your cv out. Learn how to write it yourself. Give a professional to help you review and make adjustments. Watch interview videos. Be careful when preparing your cv at this stage and look out for grammatical errors. Remove unnecessary information on your cv so it doesn’t look clumsy. In the course of your youth service you might hear of some vacancies. Please apply. Usually the recruitment process of multinationals takes a while. It is usually in stages.

When Applying.Recruiters find it insulting when you are sending your cv to them and you just state kindly find attached in the mail and that is all. This is your opportunity to propose. What do you do? You toast first before you propose. How you package yourself would determine if the recruiter would be interested in you or not. Take your time out and compose a proper email. Dear sir/ma/recruiter, ………..then you end politely. Warm regards, best, yours sincerely etc Be sure you attach you cv as that is the ring you will be needing to propose to the recruiter. If the recruiter is impressed and accepts your proposal you will be receive a mail saying you have been shortlisted for a test or invited for an interview. If the recruiter does not accept your proposal you will receive a mail saying we regret to inform you….. most people do not even get the opportunity of being shortlisted talk less of being rejected. Their cvs are usually trashed.

Think out of the box. While doing my youth service I drew up a list of 6 oil companies I would like to work for. Went on their website and did my research. Then I prepared cover letters and packaged my cv and used a courier to send my cv to the MDs of this organisations. I was lucky enough to land my first invite to write an aptitude test and consequently I did an interview. This is just one method. I will leave you to think of yours. Don’t just rely on job boards. Linkedin is another method. Instead of spending so much time on facebook and building friends list. Go on Linkedin and build a profile and subsequently connections. Connect with HR people there. They usually post some vacancies there that you might not find on job boards. Some of them headhunt from Linkedin too. There is so much you can do with Linkedin. Time would not permit me to talk about it.

CelebritiesOne Of The Things You Don't Know About Being A 'celebrity' by dramaticspeak(op): 5:42pm On Nov 22, 2017
Okay you all waste your time abusing celebrities when they put up parts of their lives in public for we all to see. But let me shock you, that is their work.

They are meant to put up stuff for we to watch. They are meant to do stuff to make the news and hit the headlines so we all can watch and also help to oil their pockets. The more popular they are the more money they are likely to get.

Lol this life is funny. People look for ways to make the news while others stand afar off watching and remaining on the same spot. I am helping to challenge someone today. Instead of wasting your time making someone else popular invest it in yourself. If you must abuse a celebrity let it make you popular or else you have just wasted your time.

Oya if this post pained you. Crucify me
NYSC10 Facts all ex corpers should know about getting a job by dramaticspeak(op):
I've read through a number of posts welcoming our colleagues and friends who recently passed out into the job market. Many have followed this up with a reminder that there isn't such a thing as "The Nigerian Dream." Once you're done with service and no longer have the guaranty of the (paltry) N19,800, nothing is certain: not the job, an income, savings for marriage, rent, etc. Nothing!

Many have been told to lower their expectations and not to dream of great jobs because many before them dreamt such dreams which never found a visa out of "Dreamtopia." Many have been told to forget their grades, great CVs and promises from friends and acquaintances of certain employment after POP.

Now, whilst I agree with the spirit behind these admonitions, I beg to differ on so many points. This post is mainly for those seeking paid employment.

1. THERE ARE NO JOBS IN NIGERIA

This is one great lie many of us have been told. And many of us agree because we believe the recession, which has been upon us for quite some time, has eclipsed whatever was left of the jobs in this country.

Well, wake up, brethren! While we've folded our arms and wallowed in this falsehood, people have turned offers down, switched jobs and had pay raises.

A career advisor once said that most available jobs are never advertised, and I strongly agree. This is not particularly because the "ogas" want to offer "their people" the roles. Not at all.

If you are interested in a paid role in any establishment, take the bold step of applying for it. As they say, finding a job is a full-time job of its own. So, get recruitment emails from the websites of these organisations and send out your applicationggggggs. If you can find their email addresses, copy a decision maker or two in your email, and see how it goes.

If you can't find any emails, which I doubt, drop physical applications at their offices.

2. TAKE WHATEVER YOU'VE BEEN OFFERED; HALF BREAD IS BETTER THAN PUFF-PUFF

Whilst it is okay to have modest expectations when applying for entry level roles, never lower your expectations to levels that make you come off as cheap, unambitious and willing to settle for anything. Funny enough, this may be a turn off for serious recruiters.

Knowledge of one's worth is a great thing, but we must be careful not to cross the thin line between this consciousness and coming off as egotistic.

If the puff-puff does not align with long term career goals, cannot conveniently sort out transportation, accommodation and feeding (unless someone else has got you covered on these in the interim), and is uninspiring, you may need to really weigh your options.

3. I DON'T HAVE A FIRST CLASS OR A 2:1

My friends, good grades place you on a great pedestal, but there's grace, too, that places you on a higher pedestal!

Employers put a cap on grades because they believe that this would enable them find smart (emphasis on smart) people who can withstand the pressures of the work they do and still deliver stellar results.

My people, when you work in an organisation and have dealings with clients, none of them is interested in your grades. What is foremost on their minds is how well you can offer smart solutions to their problems.

So, when you think the grades don't look too good, place emphasis on other things you've done that stand you out! Have you held leadership roles, received any awards, attended conferences or been involved in some other endeavour that "smart people" engage in? Put them all in your CV. I have had the privilege of knowing people this has worked for.

4. FORGET YOUR GRADES

Please if you have the good grades, by all means leverage them to your advantage. They will open doors for you! Don't forget them when you're applying.

But when you get invited for an interview, leave them at the door, unless your interviewers bring them up. Focus on your people skills, suitability for the role and other life experiences. The key is, endeavour to be interesting and a great conversationist (but biko avoid talking too much).

My interviews have all averaged 45 minutes, and this time was never spent discussing grades. Placing your emphasis on your grades during an interview would suggest that this is all you have going for you.

5. FORGET YOUR GREAT CV

Never believe this lie. Dress your CV up how you want it to be regarded. Tailor it to suit the role and your industry, and place emphasis on your strengths.

If you've sent CVs out without responses, ask your friends who have been invited for tests or interviews what they did differently.

Avoid typos and disorganisation. It is ironic when you state that a skill you possess is "Attention to Detail" when your CV looks tacky.

6. ABEG, BIKO, MBOK LEARN HOW TO SEND EMAILS

These days, especially when you apply via email, unless specifically asked to, you do not send cover/application letters. You need to learn how to send cover emails.

DO NOT ATTACH CVs TO BLANK EMAILS. Endeavour to write the subject of the email appropriately, begin with a proper salution and have a proper complimentary close.

Do not include any addresses in the body of your emails.

Please delete default signatures on your phone which read "Sent from my iPhone," "Sent from my BlackBerry 10," etc. You can replace them with a proper signature, such as:

Best regards,

Ade-Musa Chukwuma

7. BE PATIENT AND PRACTICE TESTS

Recruitment processes may take anywhere between a few weeks to a couple of months. Be patient, and pray. Generally, it is best to start applying for a job a few months before you are actually ready to commence a new role. For serving corps members, this should be a few months before POP, so that you reduce the possibility of spending even a day after service without a job to the barest minimum.

Many organisations administer aptitude tests which may be GMAT, LSAT or nondescript. Before and, especially, when you get an invite, confirm which tests these organisations administer. Download practice apps from your app store or download practice tests from the web, and do the needful - practice!

Ask around, someone you may know may work or know someone else who works in that organisation. Ask them for any avoidable pitfalls. You may also find other people's experiences online.

8. THEY MUST HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT YOU EVEN APPLIED OR WROTE A TEST THERE

If you've sent out applications or you've written a test or even had an interview and haven't received any acknowledgement or feedback, simply send a respectful reminder. The delay may be due to many reasons. For example, due to the volume of emails they receive, they may have inadvertently glossed over your application. To avoid this, try to send your applications during business hours. Each time I've done this, responses (not automated) have returned within an hour or two.

Again, they may not have gotten back to you due to administrative issues, and would most likely not mail you an explanation unless you ask. A pretty simple mail reminding them of your application, test or interview, and asking "Abeg wetin dey shele?" (of course not in these words) should do the trick.

Generally, you should send reminders after a reasonable period of silence, say, two weeks in all other cases or a few days after a timeframe within which you were told to expect feedback, and maybe a week after sending an application.

In conclusion, I'll state that you should never leave anything to chance. Promises of certain jobs by friends, family and other associates, although followed through with actual offers sometimes, should never be depended on solely. If the promises come through whilst you have another offer, no harm, no foul. Better this than waiting for months and, sometimes, years for these promises to materialise.

This has gotten even longer than I'd hoped, but I pray someone finds this useful.
Jobs/VacanciesThe Usefulness Of Linkedin When Job Hunting by dramaticspeak(op): 5:54am On Nov 09, 2017
I think anyone looking for a job should go and create a page on linkedin if they have not gotten one. Most of the jobs I see on job boards I see them first posted on linkedin by HR managers. There was a job I applied for and later I saw it on job boards. That means those relying solely on job boards for vacancies have carried last. But it is not just about establishing a presence on linkedin. You have to follow and connect with the right people. Be active by posting relevant information and making intelligent comments on peoples post. Share helpful post. Build a relationship with people. Nowadays its not all vacancies that will ever get to job boards.

I urge every job seeker to take advantage of this platform. Create a profile. For those who have gotten jobs through linkedin kindly share your experience below to encourage others. The interesting thing is you are not limited with linkedin. You can always get international jobs if you are qualified.

Today we will talk about Cover letter

I will drop a sample cover letter that you all can always edit to your taste to suit any company you are applying to. Be sure to research on the company you are applying to. Find out what they do, the departments they have and where you can fit in based on your skill sets or the problem you can solve. Outline it in the cover letter. Just be concise. Find out the address of the company through the company website. If it’s an unsolicited application you address it to the Managing Director but if it is for an advertised position, you address it to the Human Resource Manager. I always advise people to sign their cover letters. It adds to your credibility.

Jobs/VacanciesAre You Not Tired Of Just Applying Without Getting A Call For An Interview by dramaticspeak(op): 7:11am On Nov 07, 2017
The norm these days is for people to see a vacancy posted by a job board or nairaland vacancy section and you just rush to apply. Yet no calls are coming in and you keep applying. No one has ever bothered to sit down and ask why. You can’t expect to be doing the same thing over and again and get a different result. Why not try a different approach. For the next 30 days I will help you all and show you a different way to get a job. I will also post exclusive vacancies here. Please do me the favour of sharing your testimony here.

Let’s start with your cv
Is your CV Professional enough to catch attention of the recruiter within THIRTY seconds? A CV is a document which represents your life’s story in a short yet concise form. Yet, there is no formal training given to most of us to prepare a CV that makes an impact, markets you and helps you get shortlisted in the opportunities that you deserve.
I will show you the Dos and Donts of cv writing

Dos
1.Key in all your ideas as per the format and then delete information which you find redundant. Don’t focus on length of CV at the first time when you are building the same.
2. Focus on formatting, spelling and grammar is of utmost importance. An improper CV gives an impression that the candidate is unsuitable for even being shortlisted.
3. CVs should be tailored to the description of the Job that you are applying for. With the advent of AI in selection of CVs that get shortlisted for interview, it is important to have key skills (found by reading and understanding the job description) strategically placed in the CV so that the same is shortlisted for interview.
4. The document name for CV should be “First name Last name – Profession”
5. CV should always be shared to employers in pdf format as it reduces the formatting errors that might creep in due to differences in Software versions used to open and read the CV.
6. Always have 2 references ready for your candidature from either professors at college, peers at work and people who are placed in a good career path and know you well.
7. Whatever you write on your CV should be supported with a story which can be elaborated in the interview. Employers use your CV as a basis for asking questions during interview, if you fumble on answering any question related to the information provided in your CV then you come across as a person who has mentioned incorrect information and disqualifies you from rest of the interview process.
8. Professional Skills that you have developed over the years should be highlighted on the CV.
9. Use “Action words” while documenting your work experience and extracurricular activities.
10. Mention the respective year for all Achievements/Extra Curricular Activities.
11. Mention an alternative contact number in your CV.
12. Mention your LinkedIn profile via a custom link/QR Code.

Don’ts –
1. Write Curriculum Vitae as a heading in your document. It wastes valuable space and gives a bad impression.
2. Send CVs which have a lot of empty space. A 2 Page CV which has only 1.5 pages filled with information and rest of the page left blank demonstrates that the candidate ran out of information to put on his CV. Either keying in more information to make it 2 pages long or deleting redundant information to make it reduce to 1 complete page is advised.
3. Mention everything on the CV as you will not be able to come up with new content to elaborate during the interview.
4. Mention Full Correspondence/Permanent Address as the same is wastage of valuable space and might lead to security concerns.
5. Mention Strengths and Weaknesses in your CV.
6. Use Word Art/Fancy Fonts anywhere in your CV.
7. Mention a lot of achievements in your CV. It will make you sound egoistic and proud.
8. Hurry in making a CV as you will make an improper one.

Send your cvs to pointresources@gmail.com for a free review. If it’s bad they will ask for a token to edit or write a new one for you.

PhonesWhat They Do Not Tell You About Uk Used Phones: Read And Be Educated by dramaticspeak(op): 2:42pm On Oct 11, 2017
The only advantage the customer who walks into a shop to get a brand new phone has over the user of a UK used phone is the fact that the brand new phone comes with original charger and earpiece. Getting a UK used phone, you would have to get those separately and most times people end up getting fake which they know and will spoil the phone. It is advisable the users of UK used phones seek to buy “follow come” accessories. They are more expensive but they will last as against the “original” 1k or 1k5 chargers people commonly buy.

Let me make it clear here that there is a difference between Nigerian used and UK used phones. Nigerian used phones as the name implies, refers to the phones used by Nigerians and put up for sale. Several reasons make Nigerians want to sell their phones. They include: The fact that they want to upgrade to a higher version of a particular phone, They are in need of urgent cash, The Phone has hidden faults which is always usually the case, They have used the phone and are tired of it and just want to dispose of it. UK used phones are the phones used by foreigners. It is not only UK citizens but even those used by Americans, Arabians etc are all classified as UK used phones in the Nigerian market. These Phones are usually very clean and look just like new. .They are in perfect working condition as they have been tested .They come locked but are expected to be unlocked by the seller before they are put up for sale. When a phone is locked it means that if I insert my Nigerian sim into the phone no network would be discovered. There are several carriers a phone can be locked to and they include but not limited to: T-mobile, Verizon, AT&T, Tigo etc. Another category of locked phones especially for iphone users is icloud lock. I do not advise people to buy phones that are icloud lock because many a times such a phone is stolen and the cost of unlocking icloud is relatively high. How are these phones unlocked? They can be factory unlocked through the company website or they can be unlocked using a chip. Any phone that is unlocked using a chip it means that without the presence of that chip on your phones sim tray your phone would not recognize your sim network. But it is far cheaper to unlock a phone with a cheap and it helps to reduce the cost of such a phone in the market as it cannot the sold in the same price range as other phones. So far in my 7 years of selling UK used phones I have not had a single complaint on any of my phones.

How come people get scared to buy UK used phones? It is because of the activities of the customer’s ignorance of buying a fake charger that can damage a phones battery and dishonest sellers who either sell Nigerian used phones which has fault as Uk used phones to unsuspecting customers. Sellers who do not unlock their phones in order to save money and sell a phone locked to an unsuspecting customer or they put in chip and still sell at the normal price. Customers who know nothing of the chip might open the sim tray and dispose of the chip. Some sellers even sell stolen Phones and have ended up putting unsuspected customers in trouble.

InvestmentA Must Read For Every Nigerian: The Comedy Of Economic Recession by dramaticspeak(op): 7:57pm On Jun 01, 2017
My journey into Ponzi began during my service year. It was introduced to me by a friend that meant me no harm. Initially when I heard about MMM I was never interested because I had a legitimate source of income. On starting my national youth service I was introduced to a couple of Ponzi schemes that give 100 percent return within 24hours. I thought to myself that this is not bad. After all people willingly agree to donate this money to you. I was then introduced to two terms that are used in the Ponzi world. They are GH-get help and PH-place help. I first did a lot of website Ponzi and gained a lot and lost a lot as well. The person that introduced me lost her savings and had to eventually quit. I wanted to quit but greed did not let me. I knew that the 19800 I was receiving as allowance as a corper would not satisfy me. Although there are corpers that were living off the 19800 and did not die. I then shifted into whatsapp Ponzi it was there I borrowed money from my friend and I gained for a while and lost the money instead of me to return the money back. I lost over 500k of my friend’s money. It was at this point I realized I needed to stop this joke called Ponzi and focus on doing something meaningful to people’s lives and earn a living through it. Name any website Ponzi I participated. The number of whatsapp and telegram Ponzi I participated as at my last count was over 100. Somebody would just wake up and decide to start a group, milk from it and when it crashes smile to the bank.
People fail to realize that this system is a money game and there are bound to be winners and losers. Some will smile while others will cry. The people that profit from the system are the early starters. Those that come in late eventually shed tears because they pay out and don’t get anything in return. The admins of these groups are then cursed and hurtful words are sent to them. There is a certain class of people in this Ponzi system. They are the very smart ones. The system calls them eat and run. Why I call them smart is this. They invest early (PH) and profit (GH) and then leave the system. They don’t stay to do again. Ordinarily the system expects them to continue (recycle) but they access the system and know that if they do again. They might loose the profit they acquired. I would not begin to list the Ponzi schemes I was involved in.
Why did I take the pain to share this with you. This is a clarion call to all my fellow Nigerians. Let us put a stop to this. It is better to stay hungry than to soil your integrity and name. Most people borrow money to play this game and the amount in question is usually huge. 10k 20k 25k 30k 50k even 100k. Don’t try to live above your means. People have used their house rent, school fees, flight ticket money and have run into serious debt. A lot of people are in huge debt as I write because of Ponzi.
If you are in it please stop and if you are not but are considering it please don’t get yourself involved in it. I know of legitimate ways to make money so you can sleep with both eyes closed. As I write I teach at the skill acquisition programme and entrepreneurship development programme of NYSC Abia State, Umunna Bende Camp. It is not enough to say a word is enough for the wise. I am beginning my fellow Nigerians lets all put a stop to this. MMM was the beginning of this madness. A lot of people are weeping right now, some are in jail. Let’s help ourselves and stop this.

My thought is born out of these two truths; that testimonies are shared to strenghten the faith of other believers and What God did for one he can do for another because he is no respecter of persons.

See where the problem lies. When testimonies are shared sometimes amongst believers, the testifier would many a times skip the details of what he or she did to get such testimony and would rather make it look like he just prayed and God did it or the pastor spoke and he just said Amen and that was all. Then when someone else desiring the same testimony should try only what was shared by the testifier he might not get such a testimony.

For example someone testifies about miracle job and in the cause of job hunting reached out to a friend who connected him to the job and when he is testifying he might only say he prayed and trusted God and the job came.
Amongst many other similar testimonies. Business people are not left out. You collect a loan from your husband and you fail to mention it.

The summary is that christians should be very open when sharing testimonies. State what you did before the testimony did so others that desire it can do same. #justmythought.
