No one wants to hear that.

Based on the OP's attitude if birds of a feather flock together I can see why the friend was dumped.
That's all.

Lol. You referred me here. The fact that you think what he said in the emboldened was correct already shows how wrong you are. Even he now knows he was wrong.
Lemme clarify issues here, I only said increase in volume of water doesn't necessarily mean increase in sea level. That's the essence of all I've been saying. I never said the volume wouldn't increase when ice melts.

If you have seen your mistake just say it at once instead of telling me about the essence of this thread.
I initially told you to check something out yourself. Instead of doing that, you came back here to tell me I'm wrong.

You only came here to argue. You didn't even know what the subject was about.
I'm saying volume of ice will reduce when it melts, you're talking about how the increase in water level affects the environment. How are they the same thing?

Dude you're wrong, but then you're entitled to your opinion. (btw its SS1 physics work sef undecided)

2ndly the ice you refer to as 'single minute breakage from Antarctica' is actually about 4 times the size of London, not just the visible top but also the large mass of ice underneath it. It will eventually melt completely and you need to put the volume of water gotten from that in perspective.
When you tell me I'm wrong, why not at least show the part that proves me wrong.

And yes, the breakage is minute relative to the rest of Antarctica.
And you talking about SS1 Physics work, didn't they teach you that water expands when frozen? In liquid form, it's volume will actually be less than it was when iced.
Perform the experiment I spoke of and if you get a different result, tell me. Don't walk about making unnecessary noise. A properly trained WAEC candidate won't make this mistake you're making. You even referred me to wiki. Chai

Explorers:
If am making a mistake, then this thread is not necessary, it's useless.

I would have modified my post on the previous thread instead of creating this.

Someone asked a question like melting of the ice in Antarctica, will it increase the water level creating flood in the coastal cities/countries? something like that.

So i replied that even scientists around the world have been arguing about that too, some are with the fact and some are against it.

So i said personally, i believe the water level will increase.

Then i came up with dropping an ice weighing 5kg into a filled up bucket, is going to spill.

I never said is like removing an ice weighing 5kg from a bucket of water then dropping it back.

The bucket am talking about is the ocean and 5kg of ice is the billions or trillions of tons of glacier that will flow into the ocean when the ice start melting from the land.

That's why i have to come up with this thread that is only about 44% of ice in Antarctica that's floating, the rest lies on the ground and on mountains in the continent.

The picture of iceberg i added, i was only trying to let the person i was quoting know how big or massive they can be.

No one knows it all bro, we are learning everyday.

If we're making a mistake and we're being correct, i will take it and modify my mistake.

Not to create a thread to cover it up.

The thread is to make my point clear sir.
Calm down. I know this thread was to make your point to clear. I've said it repeatedly. There was no need for this epistle.
And Btw, I have nothing to do with everything emboldened.
My only problem was with your initial bucket example. It was supposed to be a simple correction, but your hard core followers decided to insult me because of it and that's what led to all this. It seems they believe you know everything.

I love your work and the efforts you have been making. Don't let this issue ruin any of it. Good luck.

Its like this explorer guy took it gf with the way u kept harping about his mistakes upandan.....
Now...to U.....if melting(imagine d kind of heat involved) can cause ice 4 times d size of London to break up from d Antarctica ice shelf....u think some of the ice floes(underneath) won't melt toohuh For me that's a strong possibility..... N who are we to know if there is no increase in sea level yet....the ice won't just break off one day...its a long, slow process involving melting on d nanoscale....before u see d visible effects(actual ice breakaway)......Now while the increase in sea level from this process(ice melting) might be small....it is still a possibility one cannot ignore.....
But the massive ice separated from d shelf is going to melt further so FURTHER increases in sea level is expected!!!!

* I am glad u realised ur mistake n corrected ursef...don't bother thanking Me..its all good*

Back to ur hypothesis.... I quoted what u said about ice melting yet sea level would be lower... Correct DAT n we are good!!!!
About d rest up there...I actually don't care!!!
Ice melting yet sea level would be lower. Right. You joined two different conclusions together.
I referred to two different scenarios.
Melting can cause ice to break off. In that case there will be no increase in water level. It's just broken ice.
Melting can also cause ice to turn liquid. That is where water level increases. That's all I said.

Explo.rers made a comment about a bucket full of water, that if you drop ice in it, the water will spill out. He related it to the effects of global warming, implying that the broken ice would increase sea level. And that's where my problem with him was. He created this thread and rectified everything wrong with the previous one. He saw his mistake.
You, came out of nowhere to start insulting me. Pls, if you don't know the origin of a case, just ignore.

Ogbeni keep kwayet!!! Are u a scientist? If yes....u were trained by donkeys!!!
If ice suspended in water melts of course d added volume will cause sea level rise n by d percentage of increase quoted by OP....of course landmasses would change with new coastlines!!!
Even NatGeo did a simulation.. U better than them?

How on earth would ice inside water melt...n d sea level would be LOWERhuh? U dreaming or whathuh
Wow. You didn't bother to understand what I said. You just poured insults. Welldone.
What you're saying and what I'm saying are not directly related.
Sea level will only increase when melting occurs. Sea level will not increase due to an ordinary breakage. That is what I've been saying.

Just because you like the OP doesn't mean you have to ignore when he says something wrong. He knows where he made a mistake and came up with this thread containing more accurate information. I had already made it clear that the things he posted on this particular thread were correct. Don't annoy me.
EducationRe: A Trillion-tons Iceberg, 4 Times The Size Of London Broke-off Antarctica(photos) by DrayZee: 10:20am On Jul 16, 2017
ThierryJay:
The above is not true sirs and madam. The 10percent ice-berg portion above the water level will contract into the space occupied by the 90% underneath when the ice-berg melts, leading to zero change in the sea level since the ice berg is already in the sea. The basis is that when ice melts, it contracts into about 90% of the volume it initially occupied.

However, contrary to what most people have been saying here, the sea-level will RISE when a one-trillion tonne ice-cap breaks into the sea, as its one-trillion tonne weight will displace a similar amount of water upwards or sidewards. The rise in sea-level is not from melting but from its original displacement into the sea. Thus, any resultant increase in the water level from this break-away should be happening gradually now and not when the ice-berg melts.
I get what you're saying in the first paragraph. It's basically the same thing we said, but like a more complete evaluation.

But in the second paragraph, I need to clarify some things:
Firstly, it's not the weight per se, that causes the displacement. It is the volume immersed in water that causes the displacement. So the only thing that should cause any increase in sea level, is the part of the ice above the water.

Now, here, you are correct in saying that ice contracts when turning to liquid water. But, due to the addition of any more liquid to the ocean, that will cause increase in sea level. This is the only thing that should cause any increase.

A break-away from a bigger ice sheet doesn't cause any change in sea level (except the break occurs from a part of the ice above the water, which is not the case in this aspect).

you're wrong. pls read more abt dis on wiki etc
Wrong on what aspect?
If it's the volume of ice and water thing, you can check that out yourself. I'm absolutely sure about that one.

But for sea level to rise, the level of melting required will need to be much more than just a single minute breakage from Antarctica. You can check the comments on Ex.plorers previous thread to understand what I'm saying.

don't misquote me pls.

the change of state from ice to water will cause an increase in the overall volume of water in the oceans. thats my take.
Well what I'm saying is that ice has a greater volume than water...So in general, the volume of water will increase, but it won't lead to flooding, because the sea level will actually be lower.
