MrEgghead:
Over the past fours years, I've been a strong admirer and a follower of this thread..

Here, I met a lot of personalities whom their words had been a source of encouragement in my staunch pursuit for a place in the Medical school.

The founding fathers of this thread in Lagusta, Josh, Ashashacash, DrHesjay and a host of others with their constant contributions deserve mentions.

Bobola07, Historian, and many of whom I met on Ibadan's thread deserve mentions also. If I drop my former monicker, I believe many of you would accede with me that its been a long way coming.

I gained admission into a course I had never wanted but chose to accept it on the virtues of family pressure and the fear of being left behind by my friends but It was a decision I've cultivated ambivalent feelings about. I became a shadow of my old self, my results were nothing to write home about in my second year; I had many carry overs and this was as a result of jamb exam coupled with hatred for the path I've chosen, though I'll be done this year; my recovery was just God's grace.

But to cut the long story short, I've just been admitted into Medicine and Surgery by the University of Benin making me a full blown member of this thread and I dedicate this success to God and every member of this thread, Thanks and God bless you all.

1/u-1/v equals 1/f
Since v is negative, I guess

Yes, I know that V is negative...

But, What of 'f' ?

In as much as I know that the focal length of a diverging or concave lens is negative, some questions seem to deviate from that...Check out the questions below please...

pabostt:

Don't be confused

1/f = 1/u 1/v

However, in calculation the value of v is negativeand the value of F is negative because most images formed in a concave lens always give virtual, erect, and diminished image wherever the object is placed.

I prepared a free preparatory physics guide in pdf for students who want to download https://servantboy.com/category/physics-for-a-level-&-utme/

So you mean that the correct lens formula equation for concave or diverging lens is
- 1/f = 1/u - 1/v ??
If yes,that is what I already know !!...

But some questions seem to deviate from that...Eg:

1) Find the nature and position of the image of an object placed 6cm from a diverging lens of focal length 15cm.

Using your formula,I got 4.28,...but the textbook wrote -4.28 ...How come ?

2) For an object placed 6cm from a diverging lens of focal length 18cm,the image is :
A) 4.5cm in front of the lens
B) 4.5cm behind the lens
C) 9.0cm in front of the lens
D) 9.0cm behind the lens.

I also got 4.5cm here,but they wrote -4.5cm still picking (A) as the answer ...How come..?

Please Clarify...

Hello UI bosses here....

Please this is very very very urgent..!!!

I have two friends who got 309 and 302 respectively in this year's Jamb exam but were not offered admission(to study medicine) in UNN due to the competitive nature of the school(i.e. Their names did not appear on the merit list that was just released)...

Their question now is...

1) Can We do a change of institution to UI since they have not conducted their Post UTME exam...??

OR

2) Is there any other thing we can do to get admission in medicine this year with our Jamb score..?....no matter the school..??

DrBESTJC, u dnt answer questions nowadays, why?? You just dey view without commenting. Help me with my question.

Oh..so sorry for that Boss...
The thing is that something came up lately that gave me a very busy schedule and I was working to relieve myself from it.

I solve every single question posted on this thread. I post only the ones I am 100% sure about......and the ones solved and posted by other Bigger Boses here,I need not stress myself to post them again.

Now back to your question:
Eben331:
A Physics student standing on the edge of a cliff throws a stone vertically downward with an initial speed of 10m/s. The instant before the stone hits the ground below, it is travelling at a speed of 30m/s. If the physics student were to throw the rock horizontally outward from the cliff instead, with the same initial speed of 10m/s, what is the magnitude of the stone just before it hits the ground? (a) 10m/s (b) 20m/s (c) 30m/s (d) 40m/s. PLS SHOW UR WORKINGS!!

I have been ruminating over this question from the very first day you posted it.

But,my problem with the question is in the last sentence which says:
what is the magnitude of the stone just before it hits the ground?
Magnitude of the stone....as in what?
Is it magnitude of the Mass of the stone or Magnitude of the weight of the stone or Magnitude of the final Velocity of the stone ?

I think from the options given that the question should be :
What is the magnitude of the (Final Velocity of) the stone just before it hits the ground?

Please check well and reply....So that I can give you my final answer to your question.

(1) A bullet of mass of 20g is fired from a gun of mass 1kg. If the velocity of the bullet is 250m/s, calculate the backward velocity of the gun.

Solution.

1) From the principle of conservation of momentum;
Momentum of the bullet = Momentum of the gun.
i.e.

Mb x Vb = - MgVg

Note that the negative sign shows that the momentum of the gun is directed oppositely to that of the bullet.
Mb = 20g = 0.02Kg
Substituting the values in the equation above,we have:
0.02 x 250 = 1 x Vg
.: The backward velocity of the gun, -Vg = 5m/s

Eben331:
(2) A ball P of mass 0.25kg loses one-third of its velocity when it makes a head-on collision with an identical ball Q at rest. Q moves off with a speed of 2m/s in the original direction of P. Calculate the initial velocity of P. PLS SHOW YOUR WORKINGS!

Solution:

2) Since P and Q are identical,it means that they have the same mass. Also,Q moved off with a speed of 2m/s in the original direction of P,meaning that their final velocity after collision is 2m/s.
From the law of conservation of momentum:
( Mp x up ) + ( Mq x uq ) = (Mp + Mq ) x V

From the question,P loses one-third of its initial velocity,which implies 1/3 x up .
Substituting the values,we have:
(0.25 x 1/3 x up ) + (0.25 x 0) = (0.25 + 0.25) x 2
.: The initial velocity of P = up = 12m/s

(2) Which one of the following is not used in the formation of a pure spectrum? (a) plane mirror (b) convex lens (c) prism (d) slit (e) screen

Answer: A

Reason

Pure Spectrum

When a triangular prism is used only, an impure spectrum is produced,one in which the colours are indistinct. To produce a pure spectrum; two convex lenses, a triangular prism, a screen and a light source with narrow slit are needed.

A 15.0kg of monkey hangs from a cord
suspended from the ceiling of an elevator.
The cord can withstand a tension of 200N
and breaks as the elevator accelerates.
What was the elevator's minimum accleration
(in magnitude and direction)? g = 10ms^-2

Solution:
Using the formula:
W = m(g + a)
200 = 15 x (10 + a)
200 = 150 + 15a
200 - 150 = 15a
50 = 15a
a = 50/15 = 3.33m/s...in the upward direction.
I think that this should be the maximum not minimum acceleration because above this acceleration(3.33m/s), tension becomes greater than 200;meaning that any acceleration above this will cause the cord to break.
