I will like to make a comment but i'm afraid of my oga at the top coz he may sack me and said he has nothing to do with exploring Nairaland during my leisure time. |
Let us look at this and reflect on it, British Prime Minister, David Cameron standing inside the train while other passengers are sitting down enjoying the ride, can our leaders do this? www.nairaland.com/attachments/1050754_david_cameron_jpg05bfd22f95dc1214886b088365c79d75

Ras Kimono, Lijadu Sisters, Sir Shina Peters, Uwaifo, Onyeka Onwenu and Christy Essien- Igbokwe Apart from Mandy Ojugbana, who has obviously taken to the air-waves for a promising career in the Nigerian electronic media, the likes of Uncle Tunji Oyelana, Hakeeb Kareem, Dizzy K Falola, Lorine Okotie, Alex O, Alex Zitto, among others could be described as most wanted music stars of yesteryears. However, in this concluding part of our series thatstarted last week, few of these stars of yesteryears have actually fizzled out while some have actually made a return to the game in which they set the pace many years ago. Victor Olaiya Baby Jowo, Omo Pupa, Odale Ore, Iye Jemila, among other classic hits of his rocked the music scenein the 60s and 70s and they conveniently placed Sir Victor Olaiya in the league of Nigerian living music legends. Although, theoctogenarian highlife music geniusno longer hits vocal booths for new album, he’s learnt to be performing once in a while at his Surulere, Lagos’ Stadium Hotel. Christy Essien- Igbokwe One time PMAN President and Calabar born lady of soul shook the music world back in those days with such songs as Omo mi seun rere, which is still a classic. Christy remains an icon and a living music legend. Her disappearance from the music scene few years ago has however left no one in doubt that probably the velvet- toned voice songstress has dumped her music career for good. Christy’s plans to record another album and the recent remix of her old song Omo mi seun rere by one new female singer which had her dropping few lines, is an indicationthat she is making a comeback tothe music scene. Bongos Ikwe Aside been the sweet voice behind the sound track of Cock Crow at Dawn, the old popular television drama series, Still Searching, Teardrops, and Mariama are some of Ikwe’s classic songs that earned him an enviable position among the top 10 music stars of yesteryears. While he’s still a making a frantic effort to return to music, BongosIkwe is currently making ends meet as an hotelier in Oturkpo, Benue State. Dan Maraya Jos He is the favourite of the Northerners in the 70s and 80s. Dan Maraya Jos became the toast of Hausa music lovers with the songs like Gulma Wuya, Auren Dole, Jawabin Aure, and host f classic hits. Ever since he came toLagos to perform and was honoured during one of PMAN’s events, few years ago, little or nothing has been heard of the Jos, Plateau State based Dan Maraya. Felix Liberty He is one of Nigerian great artistes who were carried away by their fame. The reckless life-style of Felix Aigbe Liberty of Ifeoma and 419 fame was the genesis of his fall scene and this really affected his music career. But thank God, he had since beenarrested by the Holy Spirit and the lover boy as he was fondly called in those days is now a pastor, singing for the Lord. Lijadu Sisters They were the first Nigerian female identical twins to dictate the pace in the Nigerian music industry in the late 60’s, 70s and early 80s. The sisters with voices released their debut album titled Iya Mi Jowo in 1969 on the Decca Records Label and dropped Danger, a sophomore album in 1976. Their final two albums before they went abroad were Sunshine and Horizon Unlimited in 1978 and 79 respectively. While inthe US, they released Double Trouble; a compilation of previously recorded materials from their albums Horizon Unlimited and Danger, in1984. After settling in the US, they disappeared from the public eye, making details of their music career sketchy, as they rarely grant interviews. The Lijadu Sisters, will be forever remembered for their hit classic Orere Elejigbo Victor Uwaifo That the famous guitar boy is a man of many parts, is like statingthe obvious. Apart from being a living music legend, Sir Victor Uwafor is a writer, sculptor, university teacher and inventor of repute. His all time mega hit song, Joromi, is reputed to be the first African song to win a gold disc, and certainly one of thehottest selling classics to have ever come out of Nigeria. Some ofother unforgettable songs of Uwaifo include Siwo-Siwo, Sweet Banana, Guitar Boy, Do Amen Do, Akwete, Ebiss Ebiss, Dododo among others that have ruled the airwaves for many years. Onyeka Onwenu The Elegant stallion as she is fondly called is a name that has found its way in the history bookof Nigerian music industry. Dancingin the sun, Ekwe, Iyogogo and OneLove are just few of Onyeka’s many classics that launched the sweetvoiced singer cum actress inthe league of Nigerian music legends. Briefly, after the controversial One million march for the late General Sanni Abacha, Onyeka’s few appearances in home videos sparked up speculations that probably she had dumped singing for acting. Although, she has also joined the political train, Onyeka sealed the lips of those who thought she had kissed music goodbye with a new album, which is currently under media review. Ras Kimono It is no longer news that the famous rub-a-dub master is back in Nigeria, Ras Kimono’s much talked about new album seems tobe long overdue for release. Delay that has sent tongues wagging that probably there is something that Kimono is afraid of. Anyway, while Rhumba style, Whats gwan, Under pressure, Natty get jail, among other old classics of Kimono had accorded him the power and respect which the US returnee still commands inthe music industry, many music lovers have not stopped to wonder ‘what’s gwan’ with Ras Kimono. Bright Chiemezie The fair-complexioned Akpu and Ogbono soup exponent is one of the leaders of old school (Highlife music) in the Nigerian music industry. After the release of his popular album ‘Oyinbo Mortality’, which comprised of hit tracks like Achoron Zigima sound, Remember your roots, Oyinbo mentality among others, the Okoro Junior as he is fondly called, has been battling to revive his music career. The leader of the Zigima sound, who relocated to his village in Umuahia, Anambra Statefew years back, breezed to Lagoslate last year to promote his newalbum Sir Shina Peters (SSP) The highly- gifted guitarist experienced a phenomenal rise tostardom with the success of Ace, his debut album as a solo artiste that sold several millions of copies. This was after he parted ways with his age-long rival and former mate, Segun Adewale. They both formed a band known as Sir Shina Adewale in the 80’s The success of SSP, as he is fondly called, follow-up albums likeExperience, Shinamania among others permanently put Shina Peters on the lips of both the young and old in the Nigerian music industry. Interestingly, whilecritics believe that Shin Peters has lost the grip on his groove despite his romance with Kennis Music a couple of years ago, which brought about the re-mix of one of his old songs, SSP seems to be getting it back with recent stage performances. Esse Agesse This soul queen, whose style of dancing and singing reminds one of the present day Janet Jackson. The beautiful dark lady laid a siege on the Nigerian music industry in the mid 80s and early 90s, with some of her classical songs like Back to the basics, Finepepper soup and kissing game, a duet with Blacky. Although, she is currently romancing politics, Esse had since announced her return to the music scene with new gospel album, which audio and musical videos hit the airwaves sometimes ago. BLACKY The acclaimed dancehall king, Edward Iyang, also known as Blacky got two new albums after many years of hiatus in the musicscene. While Blacky is battling hard to regain his balance musically with his new efforts, he is still much relevant with few recent performances at high profile events. Blacky’s old tunes like ‘Rosie’, ‘Bang belly’, ‘Blacky’s kank’, among others are the reason why the name Blacky, is inthe consciousness of old generation music lovers. Daniel Wilson This is a reggae artiste with a style, his numerous songs had fetched him one alias or the other, like ‘Mr. Ragamuffin’, ‘Original Bad boy’ and ‘Don Dada’. He made a breakthrough in the Nigerian Music Industry in the late80s, when he hit the scene with his popular songs, "Mr. Ragamuffin" and Original Bad Boy".Since then, he has been making waves among the raves of Nigerian entertainment industry but along the line he took a leaveto re – lunch his career with an album in the new millennium. Almost through with a new album to relaunch him back to the game, O.B.B, who dropped the microphone for confectionery business sometimes ago lamented that he regrets quitting the music scene.

Here are ten fashion commandments that will help you a great deal to look good with little effort as eureka reporters takes you through a journey of fabulousness in fashion 1. Disregard trends you should't wear something just because it's of the fashion moment. You have to be yourself, find what looks good on you, and embrace it, even if it's not in vogue. The biggest fashoin faux pas is trying to look like somebody esle. 2. Never underestimate the power of detail. The last thing on is the first thing noticed. Take necklaces as example. Food stains don't count though.(doesn't mean you keep going around with huge oil stain on your cloth) 3. Keep it simple For the average dude like me, it's about building a personal wardrope that looks great on you. Don't make it complicated. When you have a choice between two items, choose the simpler one. 4. A garment should never be made of more than 25% of an unnatural fiber. A little bit of polyester isn't going to kill you. A lot of polyester? That's a different story. 5 Experiment with style. If you make mistakes, life goes on. 6. Never in shopping You've got the store trying to sell you items and you are not sure you look right. But if you have a friend along, you can always get an objective opinion from someone who knows you.(never go with geeks coz they know nothing about fashion) 7. Don't overdo it You want to be noticed for a look that's yours and not because you look clownish. Overdoing is like crying, "Oh, look at me!!" I think it's far better to be noticed for subtlely than for garishness. 8. Never wear anything sheer. Let's leave the exposed nipples to Genevieve(our nollywood actress) and janet jackson, shall we? But even the last time i checked, Janet was all covered up. Thanks anyway Janet, for the mammaries we used to see.But woe to you our shameless actress. 9. Spend with reason. I encourage many trips to the mall or to your favorite fashion retailer. However, when shopping becomes an addiction, and you have to move every two weeks to flee creditors, you officially have a big problem. 10. Cashmere is seasonless. Wear it in winter. Wear it in summer. Wear it to bed and to garden in for all i care, but cashmere is never, ever the wrong answer. Daps |

HAD he remained in office Joseph Aloisius Ratsinger would have clocked eight full years on the throne of St. Peter as the 265th Pope of the Catholic Church in April. But on February 11, 2013 just as the West and the rest of theworld that has caught the bug was getting feverish with last minute plans for Valentines Day in came the news that the Pope would resign effective from February 28. The news had earth-shifting effect and millions were left nonplussed at the Pope’s decision. As I write this, it’s just been five hours since Benedict XVI’s resignation came into effect and he began life, in his own words, as a “pilgrim on his last journey on earth”. Now to bear the official title of Pope Emeritus, Pope Benedict was the first Pope to give up the papacy voluntarily since 1415. April is an important monthin the life of Pope Benedict. It was in April, on the 16th day to be precise, that he was born in the German city of Bavaria in 1927. He was on April 19, 2005 electedPope by the conclave of cardinals when John Paul II passed on and at 78 he was theoldest person to become pope since Clement XII who reigned between 1730 and 1740. Right from the beginning he was something of an unwilling pope. Not, as the records show, for lack of qualification. If anything he was by most accounts first among equals by the time he was elected. There was probablynobody more qualified for the position of pope than the effacing Ratsinger. His reluctance, it seems now, was informed by his sensitive awareness of his role as a priestwhose duty was to illuminate theteachings of Christ to an ignorant world. What better wayto do this than as a teacher, a theologian of the Catholic Church? For most of his life before becoming pope, Joseph Ratsingerwas an academic of no mean repute becoming a full professorby his thirty first birthday. He taught from one university to another until the late 1970s when he was first appointed archbishop and shortly after cardinal by Pope Pius VI. Thus he was not a career church man in the traditional sense of it. The newly-appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is inthe same mould. Perhaps the apparent rise of academics as influential leaders of the church, a phenomenon that can be observed even in Nigeria in the careers of the likes of Pastor E.A. Adeboye, W.F. Kumuyi and Daniel Olukoya, among others, testifies to the pedagogical foundation of Christianity. This observation may look surprising now only because of the many generations of charlatans that have emerged as founders/leaders throughout the history of Christianity as well as other religions. Otherwise, religions right from time had been founded and led by teachers, people of knowledge from Jesus Christ andMohammed through Buddha to Orunmila. But Ratsinger’s reputation as anacademic was solidly earned and at the last count he has to his name nothing less than 65 books. His rise through the Church was meteoric and his intellectual input prodigious. To be pope is to combine spiritual reverence with earthly power. The Pope is the Bishop of Rome. More than this, he is the head of the Catholic Church worldwide, a position that sometimes frames whoever is pope as the leader of Christendom. He is also, as pope, the sovereign head of the Vatican, that is the leader or head of the government of the Vatican. This puts him in the same class as the president of any country, from the US, Russia to Britain and France. It was all of this that Pope Benedict turned his back on to live a life of prayer and contemplation in a monastery. This is one man thathas come to full awareness of the vainness of worldly recognition, power and material acquisition. All indeed is vanity Ratsinger says without for once alluding to it. Nobody expected a papacy couldcarry a retirement caveat. Once elected, a pope dies in office. At least so it’s been in the last 600years. But none of those who expected a pope to die in office thought of a Ratsinger. None reckoned with the leadership of a quiet revolutionary in priestly frock and nothing but the firmness of his belief that leadership is service and once such responsibility could no longer be effectively met there leadership ends. As he put it in his last public audience at St. PetersChurch on Wednesday February 27, “one receives life when one gives it up” and “loving the Church means being brave enough to make difficult decisions”. He madeno show of his retirement plans; gave no indications that he was about to make a momentous decision, nor did he leave room for any pretentious avenues forhim to be talked out of what he thought was the right thing to do. Having prayed and reflected deeply on it, he made his move and announced his retirement. The conclave of cardinals got the news the same way as the rest of the world. Nothing rehearsed, nothing scripted. Failing spiritual and physical strength, both reasons that could be overlooked in an 86 years old man, were his reasons. He gave enough room for a successor to be elected by Easter nor did he stay back to influence the choice of a successor. He chose his pontifical name, Benedict, in honour of St. Benedict and the Italian Pope Benedict XV who was pope in theperiod of the First World War. Well did he choose, for whereas Pope Benedict had the onerous task of uniting a world devastated by the First World War, Benedict XVI’s reign had a lot to contend with by way of sex scandals. Aside his mission to forge unity and peace between Christianity and Islam among other religions, his was a pontificate nearly marred by serious allegations of sexual misdemeanour against senior leaders of the Catholic Church. This was very ironical for a pontiff who probably more than any other leader of the catholic Church fought to stamp out sexual misconduct among Catholic priests. One of such cases involved Keith O’Brien, the Archbishop of Scotland, who had to step down just three days before Pope Benedict left office and has now admitted to sexual misconduct. In his time as the pope, BenedictXVI tried to hold the Catholic Church together in the face of contending forces pulling it at the seams. Whether you agree with him or not, you cannot but admire the life and career of such as Benedict XVI, now Pope Emeritus, a leader and teacher of the Word whose life is a lesson in Christian humility. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/benedict-xvi-the-pope-emeritus/ |
