Greetings to the university Vice-chancellor

To the Dean of school of medicine

And all protocols duely observed.

Over the years seniors had kept quiet on this issue for fear of the unknown but I guess it is high time someone spoke on this issues

Length

Its no news that UNIBEN medical and dental school is 8 years, yes its 8 years.
Namely
100 level - first year
200 level - 2nd year
300 level(called MB class for students in both departments)-3rd year
New 400 level - ( called oral Biology or OralB class for those in Dentistry)- 4th year
Old 400level -( generally called Pathology and pharmacology class or path/pharm class for both departments) - 5th year
500 level - (called medicine and surgery class or med/surg class for those In dentistry and O and G class for those in medicine)- 6th year
New 600level - 7th year
Old 600level - 8th year,

This is very very bad,in unilorin for example and even some state schools whose reputation isn't up to half of Uniben's , they spend 1 year in 400level, I really do not see the need why UNIBEN would spend 2 years in 400level, when I'm in 300level,I'll graduate same time with an 100level student in UNICAL. And at the end we both get same certificate regardless of the rigours we individually went through in medical school.
Please sirs, we'll like if you'd rectify this quickly because during your days, you spent 6years, the 8 years we spend is just a waste of 2 years of our lives.

Difficulty

With deep sincerity, UNIBEN medical and dental school is one of the hardest in Nigeria, Especially the dental school ,this year only 66 medical students and 8 dental students were inducted out of 25 initially admitted in 100level. Its so alarming and unrealistic, after Spending 8 years ,only 8 out of 30something will now graduate, while in schools like U.I that spend 6 years, 22 graduated out of 35 initially admitted in 100level , does it mean they are smarter than us? Are we that dull?, why is there little failure in other medical schools,even schools with embarrassing teaching hospitals are recording more success than us. A year in UNILAG 13 students got distinction in anatomy but that same year in UNIBEN, only one student got distinction, does it mean UNILAG students are smarter than us?, please we need to reduce these things,why make it hard for no reason. Before Pius got distinction in pathology in 2013, the last time someone got was in the 90's ,so over 2 decades nobody is brilliant enough to have distinction in it?. . this is very bad and its not telling well on UNIBEN college of medical sciences and UNIBEN at large, a school that controls so much respect as UNIBEN shouldn't be lagging in issues such as these.
I guess my pen will stop Dancing now.

OAU don tire everybody... Dis one no be cut-off mark issue again. Cut-off marks just dey commot after a day hin go format. OAU go talk say dem one change somefin. New development everytime. I hope say next week dem no go commot talk say na only waec dey wan use I heard they are trying to rectify somefin dats y oda faculties cut-off marks are being delayed. lolz exactly o! Smh at folks saying 30 is young for a guy.

Let's do the maths.. get married at 30 have a kid by 31( for instance) by the time that child is ready for secondary school the guy is around 42! Add 6 years to that and he is 48.
Uni starts for the child at age 18-19 add 4years uni and 1year NYSC the child is 23-24 ish and the father is 53-54 ish.

And yet some people want him to wait?

Life is just beyond what you presume..I'm aware you've only done your calculations with the belief 'all things being equal' but you failed to understand that things don't work for different persons the same way. How are we sure the op will have children as soon as he gets married;no one prays for unfortunate situations anywhere.I will still reteriate on the op chasing his academic career for now if he's so ardent about it.I might have being jaundiced in my views though but Its just an opinion.

Am at crossroads here, I got 58.3,the cut off for my course is 63.,but Elds is 57.71,am from Rivers,I don't know whether it's advisable to change since am not sure I belong to the Elds.

Rivers is surely among the ELDS.All things being equal,you'll be admitted.

Kayode Soyinka should be interrogated. how come the bomb exploded at the exact time he excused himself? He knows about his death. but It's been memory and any legal actions taken now might be a waste of time and resources.Everyone is bound to taste death,invariably his killers will definitely die one day.

Sorry for your disappointment. However, u should know that a very good o'level grade is a requisite to gain admission into a highly competitive course such as medicine particularly in unilag. I advise you to write waec Gce and try and get better grades.

Which prerequisite are you blabbing about?The requirements are spelt boldly:Five credits including English n mathematics at one sitting.I don't know why people add bunkum to their assertions just to justify their claims.

This is unarguably beyond the scope of only an oral n maxillofacial surgeon..combined efforts of so many surgeons of different specialties are required..I pray they get the funds..May God help us.

Thats when that date will still be it....

It's on rare occasions old students resume before newbies. infact, I've not seen or heard such before. From the situation on ground, I don't see us resuming until a month's time.. Supplementary admissions screening commences next month, few days shy of the first screening..And it's most likely admission lists take a month to be released.. From these analogies, our resumption date is tentative.

This is the worst nightmare that can ever happen to any student..It simply means such a person will not be issued a certificate at the end of the study. This grievous incident is more prevalent among medical schools in Nigeria which has rendered so many inspirational students hopeless and dejected.Some spend more than the expected number of years in medicine because of ignorance on their part and levity on the part of their administrators.. If the student had been in the program before it lost accreditation;there is no cause for alarm but not been accredited at all is very disastrous. And the most ironic thing is that many will read this piece and still fall to their bait as a result of impatience and easy admission.. Nigerian students should make an exclusive enquires on their choice course of study and institution before applying as discarding this may result to a waste of time and resources.. Be careful!

All this peanut disparity that we are using to shout noe make sense at all... In the long run a smart person who read a 4-5 year course would be better financially than MOST smart doctors..i knw people that if they remain with their coys for 19years might start having bonuses of 100s of millions at the end of the year excluding salaries.No exaggerations..can you say the same about yourself in the next 20years in practise assuming u even double as a consultant and professor?..The world has gone beyond this stupid little fights we have of 50k disparity at most and who has or doesnt have inferiority complex. If its for the money and to own properties in high brow areas i advice u run away from anything called health in nigeria, until the system comes back to its senses! How wud we fight the opposition(govt in this case) wen we cant even agree as a single health body..last week about 500 prospective house officers applied for a job of less than 100 persons and about 900 medical lab scientist applied for a job of less than 50 persons..All this brouhaha is not worth it! Thanks for sharing this piece. I'm Not oblivious of the fact the doctors are not well catered and the field of medicine is highly exaggerated.. I'm only passionate of the profession, nothing more nor less.. If it were because of the money I wouldn't dare the medical field;some many legal ways to acquire ginormous wealth abound outside the medical field.. I was only trying rescue the guy from the ocean of illusion and ignorance because he thinks he knows all;He's too fond of making disparage remarks about Dentistry as a profession in which I abhor most..
