Comedienne and actress, Helen Paul visited Thailand some months back. She shares fond memories of her trip to the Asian country in a recent Interview.

When did you visit Thailand and why were you in the country?

I visited Thailand last year and I was in the country for a private event that I had been invited to, so I won’t really be able to disclose the details. Nonetheless, I had fun during my trip.

How long did you stay there?

I was there for three days and I made the most of my brief stay, even though I was basically preoccupied with work.

What were some of the things that struck you on arrival in Thailand?

One of the things that I found very fascinating was the airport; it’s very big and clean compared to what you would see in other places. The fact that Thais were also speaking their native language, which is also known as Thai was quite commendable too and it drove home the point that they are very in tune with their culture.

Since you couldn’t speak their language, how were you able to effectively communicate with the locals?

The good thing was that I had two attendants who served as translators for me during my stay. They could speak English fluently, so I was able to overcome the challenge language would have posed. I also observed that although most Thais could speak English, they speak more of their native language.

In terms of food, what were some of the dishes that you tasted during your visit; did you find any Nigerian cuisine on the menu?

For the most part, I had to make do with Thai food during my stay-they had rice but it wasn’t anything compared to what we have back home in Nigeria. Similarly, their spaghetti was also slightly different from ours. I also ate a bit of chips and fish and drank tea too but sadly, there was no regular beverage and I really missed that.

When you introduced yourself as a Nigerian, what was the reaction of the people, did they take a second glance at you?

Not at all; from my own perspective, they saw me as friendly and quite playful because I went there to represent the country so I had to put my best foot forward at all times. They liked me anyway and that was really heart-warming.

In terms of comparison, how would you compare Thailand to Nigeria?

The fact that they appreciated their culture more clearly stood out for me. In Nigeria for instance, we are very welcoming as a people and sometimes, we want to speak like visitors almost immediately they come in contact with us in a bid to make them feel at home in our country. On the contrary, the people in Thailand are not like that; they are so in sync with their language and they kept more to themselves from my observations while Nigerians are more welcoming and receptive.

Do you recall how you spent your typical day, did you find time to visit some tourist locations?

I didn’t have time to do that because I went there strictly for work-related purposes so I couldn’t really unwind much but I would like to visit the country again at some point and this time around, I would definitely go there with my own food, if they will allow it at the airport.

What kind of tips can you offer travellers from your own experience?

When you are visiting a country, you must realise that their food may not augur well with your taste buds so be prepared to taste something different from what you are used to in your home country. Then, you must make sure that you travel with your first aid box intact with drugs including pain killers and drugs to fight constipation because if they don’t speak your language, they might not be able to understand what you want for your body should you fall ill.

You must also travel with your Bible or Koran as the case may be. More importantly, always Google to find locations and sites on the Internet to make your trip hitch-free. These are just a few things that will help any traveller.


How would you rate the entertainment industry in Thailand?

I noticed that the Nigerians over there were really welcoming and they were happy to see me because they don’t get to see much of our entertainers. Thankfully, with the advent of social media, they are able to keep abreast and sort of have a good leverage to know what is happening back home on the entertainment scene.

I wasn’t really keen on looking into the Thais’ form of entertainment though but from their newspapers, I still saw more of their culture which is what makes Nigerians different-we know about our culture and also seek to discover other cultures as well.

… and the fashion scene?

The people I interacted with were very fashionable but you just can’t compare the Nigerian fashion scene with what is obtainable in other places. With all sense of pride, apart from the US, you would always think of Nigeria and the fashion content available in Africa. We are highly rated on the continent, if not number one, as far as fashion is concerned.

You mentioned earlier that when next you visit Thailand, you would go there with your own food…

Yes, I’d like to go there on my next visit with my own food because I missed my garri and amala during my last trip. I spent only three days so there was really no time to explore that much in the food department.

Retired footballer, John Fashanu, was reported arrested and held in an unnamed Abuja cell over an alleged dodgy land deal, police have revealed.

The former Wimbledon and England star spent two days locked up with 200 other inmates as police investigated claims he acted as a fixer in a scam to sell plots that were not for sale.

He was arrested at his home on the Sun City Estate, in Abuja, and taken in on suspicion of “criminal conspiracy”, detectives said.

It is alleged that earlier this year the former Gladiators presenter acted for a friend looking to buy land.

The pal claims he was told by Fashanu, 54, of two contacts who would help with buying “forgotten lands” – plots owned by chiefs that the state were unaware of.

He was allegedly given N9,550,000 in cash to fix the deal with his “boys”. But when the new “owner” went to claim his land, it is alleged he found it not for sale and not in the hands of local chiefs.

Fashanu, who appeared as character witness in a London court for former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, during his money laundering trial in 2012, was arrested last week to explain himself before being left in a packed cell, police sources said.

Officers are now looking for the other two men said to be involved. It is believed they are still in Nigeria.

Fashanu has agreed to pay the money back, although he denies wrongdoing.

A source close to the ex-footballer said: “This is a business deal between friends that has gone south and the police were asked to basically mediate.

“It will all be sorted very quickly. It was just a business deal.”

It is understood Fashanu was released after surrendering his British passport and agreeing to pay back a first installment of the money.

Sources said he looked to sell some of his cars to raise the cash as he waited for funds from his numerous business interests to clear in his bank account.

His Nigerian barrister, Hyp Egbune, confirmed he had this week paid a second instalment of the money owed.

He said: “The matter is being resolved. He won’t be charged to court is my understanding.

“We are repaying the money and that should settle this matter.

“The person who made the complaint has been a mutual friend for quite a number of years and we are more interested in keeping that relationship so we are making amends. We hope to do that as soon as we can. It is quite a lot of money so we hope to do it as soon as we can. We want to have this resolved.”

Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of operation, Hyacinth Dagala, said: “John Fashanu was arrested on July 17 in connection with an allegation of criminal conspiracy and obtaining the sum of N9,550,000 under false pretence.

“He was granted administrative bail on July 18 but because of his inability to produce the requisite surety on that day, he remained in detention until July 19 when he was released.”

This is not Fashanu’s first brush with the law.

During his playing days, in 1997, he was acquitted in a high-profile match-fixing trial along with goalkeepers Bruce Grobbelaar and Hans Segers. In 2015 he was arrested over an unlicensed gun found in his Nigerian house during a police raid. He ended up paying a fine.

Two days ago, we brought you reports that a member of the House of Assembly in Bayelsa State, Kate Owoko, built an ‘ultra-modern’ floating toilet and invited the press to commission it!

Coming after her ‘floating toilet’ hit the internet and sparked outrage, with many saying its an insult to democracy, she has come out to defend it!

In a statement she released via her social media handle, Kate said the women in her community demanded for the floating toilet, saying that it was their most pressing need. The statement released by her media team reads

“In line with widespread rumors on the ‘floating toilets’ provided for the women of Okori-Ama and Oweidei-Ama of Amassoma. These were the pressing (immediate) need from these women at the time. Due to the terrain of these said compounds, they were in grave need for such toilets to answer to the ‘call-of-nature’.

Prior to today these women hard to expose themselves to unsanitary conditions. Hence, requested particularly for such toilets from their representative. Hon Kate Owoko ‘personally’ saw to the actualization of this pressing demands from her constituents.
This should be in no way mistaken for a constituency project which is her primary duty to her people. We are all aware that Her constituency project is on Education and it is ongoing” the statement read

Two popular Nigerian actors, Bolaji Amusan, popularly called Mr Latin, and Odunlade Adekola were attacked by armed robbers on Saturday night.

The actors were returning from a Glo music show in Ijebu-Ode, when their cars ran into the armed robbers who had laid siege along Ilishan-Sagamu road.

Mr Latin narrated the ordeal to Premium Times on Sunday.

“We left Ijebu-Ode after the show and heading to Abeokuta, when at about 7.30 p.m. we ran into the armed robbers already stationed themselves on the road,” he said.

The actor explained that Odunlade was driving ahead of his car when he sighted the road block by the bandits. Odunlade attempted to make a detour, but the bandits rained‎ bullets on the tyres forcing the car to a halt, he explained.

Mr Latin, who drove in his Toyota Camry behind Odunlade’s Toyota Avensis, said he and his colleague, alongside some of their aides, had to abandon their vehicles and run into the bush.


He said they were in the bush for almost two hours, while the bandits ransacked their vehicles, carting away valuables including money and mobile phones.

“We took to our heels as the robbers pursued us with guns. We were in the bush for about two hours, before we later regained freedom after the robbers left the scene,” Mr Latin stated.

He said some vigilante members later came to their rescue and they were taken to Ogun State University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu for medical treatment.

He said‎ the matter has been reported to the police and thanked God for sparing their lives.

Jude Okoye, the older brother of Nigerian music duo, Psquare has reacted to the plan of the federal government of Nigeria to stop the production of Nigerian movies and music videos outside Nigeria.

Recall, that the Federal government, through the minister of information, Lai Mohammed said;

‘This government has agreed that henceforth, whatever we consume in Nigeria in terms of music and films, must be made in Nigeria.
“We cannot continue to go to South Africa or any other country to produce our films and then send them back to be consumed in Nigeria.

A Nigerian lady who doubles as a lawyer, Ayomide Adebayo-Oyetoro has written an open letter to comedian Seyilaw over his daughter whom many have reportedly fingered to be obese, according to Ayomide she suffered child obesity and still battling with it – She had this to tell SeyiLaw !

‘I was obese as a child and I still am. And I’m not the only one. Research shows about one in five school aged children are obese. Parents close their eyes to this reality by claiming the child would outgrow it. It rarely happens.

Children should be fed right, properly and healthy. An obese child is open to a lot of health really risks. I know because I am speaking from experience.

Firstly, an obese child is prone to eating disorders. Most times, an obese child becomes an obese adult and becomes prone to eating disorders because she’d lack self-control to be able to say no to good food.

Another effect of child obesity is cardiac issues including but not limited to hypertension, asthma etc. I had asthma as a child and I still do as an adult. My attacks zigzag with my weight.

Lastly, another effect of child obesity is bone related diseases. An obese child is prone to bone ailments like arthritis, rheumatism. Tell an obese person to climb stairs and watch them thank you.

Sugarcoat it all you want, the effects are long lasting. From low self-esteem to depression.
