Ishilove: You know he has a point. Most, if not all the doctors I have met almost have to be forced to explain your ailment, and woes betides you if you dare ask them to explain the name of the drugs that they have scrawled in indecipherable letters on crisp slips of paper. Some time last year, one of them, an elderly man snapped at me for 'asking too many' questions. He refused to explain the ailment, and it was only after a year that a doctor here on Nairaland explained it to me. The drugs I took was a result of research work which I carried out on my own. This 'doctor' did not deem it fit to prescribe the right drugs for me. I agree with you Boss! Many doctors esp the elderly ones still carry the 'doctor knows best' attitude which was obtainable back then. However, things have changed and doctors are encouraged to explain and lay options open for the patient to choose what's best for him. I know many people have had funny experiences but it ain't really fair that people would now band the whole profession as 'goofers' whereas we know that they're trying |

Samgreguc: Why out of ignorance? That then will mean he wasn't adviced properly which puts either the Pharmacist or Physician at fault.
We must learn to tell ourselves the truth without emotional sentiments. Did you see the part where I said 'failed to heed medical advice'? Bro, we're only making speculations. That's why we don't reserve the right to make allegations till we hear from all parties. |
Health › Re: Charles Oben: GSK Drug Turned A Healthy Banker Into A Monster by DrObum(m): 3:59pm On Sep 11, 2015 |
Samgreguc: Sir, are u alright to think no one has done wrong? Its either the Pharmacist's, Physician's or patient's fault. Am very sure it's not the fault of GSK. Yes Boss, I'm alright to think that nobody did any wrong. I never pointed at the drug firm, when I said nobody, I meant nobody. In a situation like this, even if the patient had failed to report adverse reaction on time nor keep to medical advice, we can't say he's at fault, cos he acted on ignorance. It only robs him of a right to lay claims on the firm or the medical team. So, nobody did wrong! |

gulfer: Lost a cousin to this in 2009, I froze when I saw him before death at LASUTH and it has continued to haunt me. I did a little research after his death and below two steps might have saved him according to what I read. 1. Stop the medication immediately-he did not know and never stopped. 2. The hospital resorted to conventional burns treatment and we eventually lost him. Aloe Vera was mentioned online as a very good restorative aid before it becomes severe. Reading your post, I felt why most nigerians would just look for who to tongue-lash in situations like this. It's a pity you lost a cousin to this. The painful truth is that, in your own case, i'll hold the managing medical team responsible for your cousin still continuing that drug despite his reaction. Means they left a few loose ends in their management, if not they would've stopped the drug. But on your despair of his management as being like the typical burn case, i'll tell you they were right. Regardless of how it happened, when the epidermis (outer layer of the skin) is lost, he faces the same risk as a burns patient and so they are managed similarly. Those online stuffs about aloe Vera should be downplayed in your mind cos they start becoming a bit relevant when you're now fully concerned about re-epithelisation ie when you've saved the patient from the immediate causes of death (dehydration and infection). Part of the problem is that we've lost so much confidence in the system that when things go wrong, we think that the professionals goofed. |

Change2015: Half-baked is your assumption that there was no existing literature about the drugs potential side effects, no matter how rare. Ignorant, is your assumption that a doctor does not need to communicate properly with his patient and make him or her aware of the positives and negatives of his advice and actions. Please go on, throw your hands up and 'leave it to God' as you revel in your own docility. And you my dear friend was in the consulting room to know the details of the discussion that ensued there. My point is, try to know the realities of medical practice in different climes before looking for who to tongue-lash! |
Health › Re: Charles Oben: GSK Drug Turned A Healthy Banker Into A Monster by DrObum(m): 1:22pm On Sep 11, 2015 |
Spirit1: This absolutely has nothing to do with GSK. Steven Johnsons Syndrome is a very well known side effect of this drug (Zyloric)
The doctor should have warned the patient of the potential side effect. This is what happens when doctors hide the names of the medication they are giving to patients or do not appropriately educate their patients. The pharmacist who sold the drug is also liable as he/she should have warned the patient too.
What will need in Nigeria is a legislation on patient's bill of rights. It is the right of the patient's to be educated by their healthcare providers about medications and treatment options.
Nigerian doctors sometimes act like demi-gods. It is the patient's life and they have the right to ask questions; ANY question.
By the way, keep in mind that every medication is a potential poison. There are thousands of different medications that we all take every day that can cause this and more.
I wish him a speedy recovery. You can make a point without painting the poor doctor as bad or incompetent. I take time to explain drug reactions to patients but does that mean it can't or wouldn't occur NO! It could still happen. You weren't in that consulting room, you're only reading what a blogger wrote. So read and comment with an enlightened mind and save this unnecessary aspersions on the noble medical profession. |
Health › Re: Charles Oben: GSK Drug Turned A Healthy Banker Into A Monster by DrObum(m): 1:17pm On Sep 11, 2015 |
figoperch: Very enlightened post from you. The doctor is expected to find out from the history of the patient if there's any allergic reactions to some drugs. Tests should have been conducted. In fact, the doctor, GSK and sometimes the patient may be at fault.
I've seen a situations where patients Dont want to wait for test results. They just say doctor, give me something now now. Even after taking allergy history, one could still experience this. Mind you, history taking is a story of what the patient has experienced before, so could be that he doesn't know himself to have any allergies to allopurinol nor Sulphur drugs. A colleague of mine had the same Steven Johnson Syndrome after taking ART for PEP, and that doesn't make the drug company liable or the prescribing doctor stupid, it's one of those adverse reactions that occur in life. Being enlightened, he simply stopped the drug and was managed intensively. Nigerians just seeking opportunities to tongue-lash others whereas it's their ignorance at play. |

Change2015: To be honest I have had many interactions with our doctors, and they just scare me with their general lack of awareness of modern treatments. Patients needs to research their diagnosis and treatment intelligently. They do not even mention the name of the doctor or the hospital and if this case is to be credible the prescriber of the drug must explain his own role. Why not check what Steven Johnson Syndrome is on Google before you spill your half baked knowledge. Any where in the world, people react to certain drugs like that. The situation has nothing to do with the doctor nor the company. |

Ndeewonu: This is serious!
By the way, I am not a lawyer, neither am I a pharmacist, but I know that nearly all drugs have side effects. Individuals also react to such drugs differently. I am sure that many people have taken this same drug without the same kind of reaction.
To me, if there is anybody to be dragged to court, it should be the Cardiologist (I doubt if he actually saw the cardiologist in a good hospital) who recommended the drug.
Good luck to you anyway. There's nothing to sue anybody for. Nobody did wrong there. He simply had an adverse drug reaction which is quite rare but has been numerously documented in medical literature. Doesn't mean that everybody that takes that drug would react that way, but it happens. |
Health › Re: Charles Oben: GSK Drug Turned A Healthy Banker Into A Monster by DrObum(m): 1:01pm On Sep 11, 2015 |
There's nothing fake about the drugs and the company isn't liable to any charges.
Steven Johnson Syndrome is a known adverse reaction to many drugs, however occurs only in few persons.
I'm also sure that the company provided such warning on the leaflet accompanying that drug.
Good news is, it's treatable and the drug and all that carry that risk should be withdrawn from the patient. |
