Politics / I Will Kill Anybody Who Tries To Disgrace Me Before Buhari– Bello Kogi Gov by Drsheddy(m): 12:39pm On Jan 11, 2019
Miss Natasha Akpoti, a Social Democratic Party, Kogi West Senatorial candidate has urged Mr. Yahaya Bello, the Kogi state governor to allow peace in Okene land.

Akpoti, accused Bello of instructing Okehi Local Government Area police Area Commander to arrest and detain Mr. Muhammed Ibrahim and Mr. Tunde Ojo for supporting her senatorial ambition.

She has since reminded Bello how he threatened her on a telephone asking her to drop her senatorial ambition.

“I recall your words when you called on me to step down for your anointed candidate Yakubu Oseni “Natasha I have everything at my disposal to frustrate and defeat you if you challenge my decision to make Oseni a Senator” she said.

Akpoti recalled how Bello called her and told her, “I am so powerful I can shut down the entire state for 1 week and nothing will happen. I will fight you and everyone who wants to disgrace me before president Buhari with my last blood”

She reminded the governor of the 2007 incidents where for 10 months, hundreds of lives and properties were lost in a battle between the Ibira indigenes and police, and warned him never to allow that happens again.

“Today, you might have most of the police and thugs, but I have the good people; and one with the people has God; one with God is majority”.

Now, for the first time I openly, call on you to sheath your sword and let the spirit of democracy reign, she told Bello.

Crime / Kogi: Renewed Ethnic Clash Claims 10 In Bassa by Drsheddy(m): 10:33pm On Jan 10, 2019
Over ten people were said to have lost their lives, in a renewed ethnic clashes in Bassa local government area of Kogi State, following the return of the Egburas who were displaced from their community in Biroko, during the hostilities between the Bassa Kwomu and Egburas in April last year.

Our correspondent reliably gathered that following the intervention of elders from the area, the Egburas who left their homes when the community was razed down were asked to return, to pave way for lasting peace among the two ethnic groups.

However, when the Ebguras returned to Biroko yesterday, some Bassa militias were alleged to have attacked them, insisting that it would be too risky to allow the people they forced out to return, considering the proximity between Biroko and Sheria, a major settlement of the Bassa Kwomu ethnic group.

This development, according to the source, led to renewed hostilities between the two ethnic groups, thereby forcing residents of the area to flee, so as not to be consumed in the crisis.

The source further disclosed that tension began to build in the area when Bassa Kwomu militias allegedly attempted to attack the Ohiogba of Mozum and paramount ruler of the Egburas, Alhaji Halidu Bukar Ali, when the royal father went to Oguma for a peace talks.

According to the source, the Ohiogba, with the administrator of the local government, Mr. Sam Alumka and other government officials branched at the palace of Aguma of Bassa Kwomu, on their way to resettle the people of Biroko community.

The Bassa Kwomu militias, it was further gathered, locked the gate of the palace of Aguma, saying it was God that brought the Ohiogba and some prominent Egburas leaders into their fold.

Seeing that the life of Ohiogba of Mozum and his people were under a serious threat, the security agents at the palace of Oguma, particularly the military threatened to open fire on who ever attempts to undermine peace in the area.

The source added that it was by sheer determination and bravely displayed by the military that enabled the Ohiogba and some Egburas leaders to escape from the palace of the Aguma of Bassa Kwomu at Oguma.

He therefore appealed to the state government to take decisive steps to tackle the matter before it gets out of hand, maintaining that the local government is presently in disarray, as thousands of residents have fled for fear of being caught in cross fire.

He disclosed that hundreds of people in the area are currently taking refuge in neighbouring villages in Dekina local government so as to escape from the crisis, even as he confirmed that many lives might have been lost in the renewed hostilities.

Health / 24 Die Of Snake Bites In Gombe by Drsheddy(m): 10:37am On Sep 11, 2018
The Snake Bite Treatment and Research Centre in Kaltungo, Gombe State, says it has recorded 24 deaths out of the 1,829 cases of snake bites recorded between January and August.

The officer in charge of the centre, Abubakar Ballah, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaltungo on Monday.

He said the 24 deaths recorded were due to the lateness in reporting cases to the hospital, with many of the patients admitted in critical conditions.

“Today is September 10 and we have 84 patients in our records currently receiving treatment and probably more patients will come before the month ends.

“The cases are on the increase because of the downpour which dislodges snakes from their holes to seek higher ground because they do not like wet environment.

“They climb trees, maize or millet to keep away from water; that is the reason why people are severely bitten,’’ he said.

He said apart from farmers, herdsmen who climb trees to cut leaves for their livestock are also at risk as well as those who go to the bush to fetch firewood.

Mr Ballah appealed to farmers to refrain from staying late in their farms, saying snakes often come out in the evening to look for prey.

He also lamented the attitude of treating victims at home with the use of herbs until the condition had deteriorated.

“We are calling on their relatives to stop giving snake bite victims herbs because some of the herbs cause the person to vomit, thereby making the condition to deteriorate.
“The only first aid you can give to a snake bite patient is paracetamol and then you rush to the hospital.

“We have drugs in sufficient quantity and enough backing by the state government.

“Even though some of the patients we receive come from the neighbouring states, they receive treatment free of charge like indigenes,’’ he said.

Religion / China Thinks Islam Is A Disease by Drsheddy(m): 10:26am On Sep 11, 2018
Authorities in China have embarked on a large-scale and systematic campaign against the country’s Muslim minority, sending a staggering one million Uighurs to internment camps.

People showing any adherence to Islam in China’s northwestern Xinjiang region - praying, fasting, abstaining from alcohol or pork, growing a long beard, or wearing Islamic clothing - have been detained by authorities and treated as though they suffer from a mental illness.

Taken from their homes to re-education camps, the detainees have been forced to comply with Communist Party propaganda, which includes singing party anthems and slogans and attending daily brainwashing sessions. If they fail to submit, detainees are subjected to torture, including sleep deprivation, solitary confinement and physical violence.

Held without charge

Treated as “enemies of the state” solely because of their religious identity, the detainees are held without charge and often without access to legal representation, human rights activists say.

Yet, while the treatment of Uighur Muslims is shocking, it has failed to cause a global outpouring of sympathy or anger.
authorities began using “transformation through education” to deal with Uighur Muslims amid concerns of “extremist” or “separatist” elements in the community, including reports of a few hundred Uighurs travelling to Iraq and Syria to join the Islamic State. But experts say the arrival of Communist Party leader Chen Quanguo to Xinjiang saw this programme expanded and intensified in 2017.

During the course of last year, Uighurs accounted for 21 percent of all arrests in China, even though they make up just 1.5 percent of the population.

News of discrimination and prejudice against the minority has repeatedly filtered out of China, but the events of the past year - including comments last month from the head of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which stated that Beijing had “turned the Uighur autonomous region into something that resembles a massive internment camp” - have lent credibility to a story that most would rather pretend didn’t exist.

Shocking silence

While international media have predictably started to ask questions about the treatment of China’s Uighurs, leaders and governments around the world have carefully steered clear of the issue. The silence has been startling.

China’s position as an immense economic power, able to wield tremendous political clout over governments around the world, is without question. But not one of the 49 Muslim-majority countries around the globe have asked for clarity or condemned the Chinese for the escalation of human rights abuses in Xinjiang.

Last week, leaders from more than 40 countries - including many with sizeable Muslim populations - travelled to Beijing for the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. President Xi Jinping pledged $60bn to the continent in development initiatives and promised to cancel debts of those nations struggling to repay them.

Police patrol a night food market in China’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region on 25 June 2017 (AFP)

For all the talk of Africa being “an equal partner” and the relations being a “win-win”, not one African leader dared to ask their hosts for clarity on the rights violations reported.

Clearly, “trade” between China and the Arab world and “economic development” in Africa is way more important than institutionalised bigotry on the part of their benefactor, an emphatic endorsement of China’s policy of non-interference in the domestic issues of the countries it deals with.

Yet Paul Kagame, Rwanda’s president and the current head of the African Union, described China’s engagement with the continent as “deeply transformational”, noting: “We will also open new pathways on environmental protection and scale up people-to-people exchanges.”

Social engineering

By refusing to raise legitimate concerns with their Chinese counterparts over the treatment of the Uighur population, those Muslim and African leaders in attendance were complicit in what is essentially a project of social engineering.

This is the same inertia that led to the murder and expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar’s Rakhine state in 2017, in what is now being openly called a genocide.
accompanied India’s decision to potentially strip some four million people - mostly Muslims - of their citizenship in the northeastern state of Assam. They are now described as imposters and foreigners.

This same lacklustre approach has also allowed the US to continue to ban citizens of several Muslim countries, without so much as a whimper from the African and Arab world.

New world order

The humiliation suffered by Uighurs, and the silence that has accompanied these disclosures, emphasises the rise of a new world order.

Xinjiang has long acted as a test-site for the Chinese government to experiment with new modes and methods of control; with endless checkpoints, including facial-recognition systems fitted on street corners across villages in the province, Uighurs face endless scrutiny. It may be among the most policed areas on the planet. Should such conditions go unchallenged, activists say, these policies could easily be replicated by other countries looking to repress or control minorities.

With fascism knocking on our doors from India to the US, such concerns have never been more pressing.
