HealthRe: Ask The Eye Doctor Any Problem Concerning The Eyes by drsteroid(op):
Tomideee:
hi doc' i will try and state my eye problem as vivid as possible , i pray its not what i think it is

My story
since my primary school days i have been short sighted, although i dont have problem with close stuff up on till now but back then couldnt view the black board from a far distance, i compensate for this by trying to sit at least somewhere around the middle of the class this was about 12 years ago, was in primary 4 when i first notice this, bt years later my distance of clearity or say the distance from where i could see the board kept decreasing, i went from sitting at the middle to the core front before i could see the board clearly, i just had to struggle with note taking and drawing diagram from the board, but during this period my immediate senior brother was diagnoise with myopia and was given a -3 glasses' i tested the glasses and was suprise how sharp and clear the world really is .
by 2011 i was done with secondary school , didnt write the jamb for that year so i was at home during this period i brought a desktop computer, with an estimated use of atleast 9 hours without break for 3 years, i notice a huge decrease of sharpness withing this period plus my vision started getting blurry occationally in the morning when i use it over night with less sleep. But by january this year the blurriness was permanent and i notice i cant recognise faces accept the person is close, i decided to cut down on my heavy computer usuage and get enough sleep but yet the blurriness wont go away except if i use my brother's -3 myopia glasses.
Finally now i have started noticing "Floaters' 2 quite large cobweb like thing and small tiny ones in my vision .

Some of what i notice
- my vision get quite sharp if i woke up in the middle of the night .

- i once had an injury on my right eye were a single broom pinched my eyes ( i was about 12 then ) and i couldnt open the eye, when i finally open it, it was cloudy and watery for almost a day

- my near vision is completely okay

- if i stare at bulds or lamps, it seems to be brighter and sometimes i get uncomfortable staring the at light from my phone when i adjust it to full brightness

Family history

- I have two uncles from my dads side diagnose with glaucoma ( my worst fear )

- my dad is longsighted ( he is using glasses for close work and reading )

-my mum is midly shortsighted

- my senior brother is also shortsighted ( although without blurriness )

please what might be my own problem?
wot a nice and detailed case history.let me just add little 2 what jaunty has sed.does it means dat since u started experincing dos symptoms since primary school days,u have neva seen an eye doctor? I wil advice you to stop using your brother's eyeglasses because it was personally made for him afta a thorough eye examination on him.u may think u re ok and can see clearly with it,but its really not good for you cos your refractive status may not be the same with your brother's own..floaters can be as a result of serious problem within the tissues of the eyes or just a normal and self limiting physiological process..I wil advice u 2 see an eye doctor asap 4 a detailed eye examination..tanx

thanks guys so much. sorry i'm not on bbm.

was given that eye drop some months back for an allergy but i stop using it after a while though.

it seems like it has resurfaced cuz i wake up itching my eyes in the morning i thought maybe i could just know what that eye drop is for so i can get one later.
I will advice u to see your doctor again so that he can examine your eyes again to know if there is something else causing the aallergic reaction, maybe misdirected eyelashes known as trichiasis or other causes.try see your doctor as soon as possible and make sure u encourage facial hygiene by always washing your face with clean luke warm water before and after bed,so that any dirt or dust which might have entered your eyes during the hustling and bustling of the day can be washed away..thanx

hello doctor, pls someone blind at birth, wats d solution
there are many causes 2 blindness @ birth...the common causes are congenital cataract, some drugs used by mothers during pregnancy, retinitis of prematurity, infections from mothers to babies before or after birth, complicated delivery, ophthalmia neonatorum resulting from lack of proper hygiene during child birth, retinoblstoma (malignant cancer of the eye) etc. A detailed case history is needed from the mother of the child, this wil help wit proper diagnosis.prognosis depends on the cause of the child's ocula-visual problem e.g cataract extraction is required 4 a child with congenital glaucoma and this wil enable the baby to see as a result of the removal of the opacified lens. proper treatment action or plan should be initiated.wil like to know the cause of the blindness and age of the child..Good 2 be back here doing what I knows how to do best.I guess the moderators are on a banning spree cos I don't know what I have done to deserve the ban.

hello doctor, pls someone blind at birth, wats d solution
many things can actually cause blindness at birth. The most commonest ones are congenital glaucoma, retinoblastoma, drug induced blindness from medications used by mothers during pregnancy, infections from mothers such as syphilis, gonorrhea etc, complicated forcep delivery, congenital defects of some tissues in the eyes are also causes of blindness at birth.after birth infections from mothers and widwives causing ophthalmia neonatorum is also a major cause of this but can be treated with the right medications.A proper case history is needed from the mother of the baby to ascertain the cause and prognosis of the blindness..the mother of the baby are usually in the best position to give details about this.the age of the baby is also a major factor for prognosis.tanx

hello doctor, pls someone blind at birth, wats d solution
many things can cuse blindness @ birth, some are reversible while some may be irreversible..congenital cataract is one of the major causes of blindness @ birth, but it can be treated through cataract extraction and the person will be able to see well again..use of some drugs during pregnancy and complicated birth or forcep delivery can also cause cases of blindness @ birth..a detailed case history is usually needed from the baby's mother so thaat she can tel us the circumstances surrounding the child birth as this will give a clue to the cause of the blindness.retinoblastoma, retinitis of prematurity ( premature babies),ophthalmia neonatorum are other causes of birth related blindness..it wil be important to get the child's mum to give detailed information concerning the child's birth..I wil also like to know the age of the child..tanx

Nairaland GeneralRe: Patronizing Children(young) Street Hawkers by drsteroid(m): 7:10pm On Nov 15, 2014
I do feel sorry 4 them wheneva I see them..what annoys me most is that their parents or whoever sends them to hawk will just give them rotten or unripe fruits e.g cherry to hawk around in hot sun knowing fully that its hard for them to get someone to buy such fruits or goods..some of the goods they give them to hawk and roam about with, are not even up to 50naira sometimes..I see it more as wickedness..- think poverty shudnt be confused with wickedness..its really time for the govt 2 make a law against child hawking.

I think those at the head of the military have realy ran out of idea..today they say something and the other day another thing...how can criminals and stupid terrorists decieve a whole country all in the name of ceasefire.am more disapointed with our so called secret agent ' DSS' , they ought to be in the fore front of this war providing intelligence report, but instead they are being used as a tool to gain cheap political point

Hello Doc,
I must say u,re doing a fantastic job.
Keep it up?

My Aunt had a cataract surgery 2months back n it was great, I mean successful. But since then she,s been placed on numerous eye drops, and she,s getting tired of them. Some of which are 1. Novartis Hypo Tears Gel, Polyacrilic Acid Vitamin A Palmitate. (she hasn't started this tho) 2. Systane Ultra. Lubricant eye drops, Alcan Sterile, and many others after d cataract surgery.

My questions are;
Should she diiscontinue all eye drops?
Which are/ is the most important to be used?

She has no complain & in her sixties.
good day, once a patient had successfully undergone cataract surgery,he/she needs to be placed on antibiotics drugs, anti inflammatory drugs and other drugs to aid the healing of the surgical wounds.the patient ought to continue using the drugs and go 4 regular eye check to no if the wound is fully healed.so there is really no problem using eyedrops and oral drugs after cataract surgery.the only thing is that the patient is supose to always go 2 d clinic for post-operative cataract management. The drugs u listed are drugs used to manage patients with dry eyes and allergies.so there is really nothing bad using such drugs after cataract surgery, considering the fact that she is also in her post menopausal age which affects rate of tear production causing dry eyes. I wil advise she should try continue with her post cataract management and see her eye doctor regularly...tanx

Thanks so much. If I may ask, is there any remedy for this so-called degenerative myopia? Or is it a case of newer glass prescriptions every now and then? Also, any idea of what the anti-reflection glasses go for, cost wise? Thanks.
there is other remedy for degenerative myopia, which is keratectomy.it is a LASER surgery done on the cornea to help reduce cornea curvature if too steep.it is not done in Nigeria presently, but in abroad.antiireflection coated lenses are very affordable..try visit an eye clinic close to u for one.

Ok thanks,
lastly, can dry eyes lead to total blindness.
The artificial eye tears u prescribed, can i use it the rest of my life without much side effect?
yes! Artificial tears has little or no side effect..it has d same physiologgical components with the natural tears in our eyes.dry eyes can lead to blind due to the erosion of the corneal epithelium which can lead to cornea ulcer, and if left untreated can progress to microbial keratitis which is more devastating and can lead to cornea opacity from scar formation leading to blindness in that eye.

Thanks, drsteroid, for starting this thread and for all the helpful suggestions you're making. God bless you and others who have chipped in a thing or two. I need your help also.

I've been battling with progressively worsening blurred vision for years. Glasses have not helped to check the unpleasant phenomenon. Do glasses ever stop or halt blurry vision issues? May I also know what could be responsible for involuntary tears from the eyes? If it matters, I use phones and laptops for most part of my waking hours.

You once made mention of a special eyeglasses for people using laptops regularly. What are the glasses called and please how do I get a pair of those? Thank you.
the type of myopia u have is degenerative myopia I.e your refractive status keeps changing due to developmental changes in your eys as u grow older.its really not a problem.glasses don't correct vision permanently, they only aid us 2 see well by making sure the image formed is on the retina.involuntary tearing can be as a result of eyestrain and refractive error.in your own case, since u make use of laptop always,u tend 2 tear because of the reduction in number of blinks u make due to constant focusing on the laptop while working with it. Anti reflection lenses helps to protect the eyes against rays 4rm laptops and computers, its really gud if u can get one 4rm an eye clinic since UV rays have been implicated as one of the causes of cataract...tanx

i prefer surgery but it seems they are afraid of carrying out the surgery ,and in d aspect of glasses i cant cope because i am now refered to as a low vision patient by optometrist in ubth, am too young for those telescope and biconcave fat lens
my brother no amount of sacrifice is too much 4 ur eyes.your eyes are your windows to the world.losing ones sight is just like being a living corpse cos u won't be aware of your environment anymore.I wil advise u 2 see a low vision specialist as soon as possible, since u have been referred to see one. Glasses or drugs doesn't bring about the required improvement in your vision, hence, the need to see a low vision specialist

u mean it can be treated totaly or healed?

and where can i get the drugs?
there is really no drug that can treat dry eye,but there are drugs that can help increase rate of production of tears and those that helps 2 make the patient comfortable 4rm symptoms of dry eyes..the drugs are available in well known pharmaceutical stores.I wil advise u 2 see an eye doctor so that he can prescribe the right drug combination after comprehensive examination of your eyes and after copious irrigation...tanx
