thebigkendo: Your link is not working but all the 2000 and below cars entering lagos.. Where are they coming from? Abi na all the 2003 corolla & corolla weh full Uber? Doing nicely after over 10 years Well how many of them are road worthy? If you can recall that at one point, the Nigerian custom banned cars from certain age from coming into the country. The government felt that Nigeria became a dumping ground for these cars. But later on people protest that most Nigerians can't afford newer models cars. So the age limit was reverse ... Ghana for example has an age limit for cars coming in ...I think the car has to be at least 7 years old or something.. But the point is they have a better regulations than Nigeria... And again not to beat a dead horse, a lot of imported cars from USA can still last a few more years in Nigeria if it is well taken care ..but not to the point that you keep rebuilding engine over and over and over again... we can agree to disagree... |

Doing nicely after over 10 years Try the link again ...yes those 2000 models cars are coming from USA. But a lot of them will not pass inspection test my brother.. It will cost more to fix it so people rather sell it ..keep in mind rust is also a big problem on some cars.. For naija level and cost of labour those cars will last another few more years in naija if the car is well taken care of .. And also the auction cars ,why do people sell their cars to the auction.. In some cases the car is either too old or the cost of fixing it outweighs the value of the car ..sometimes u can get good deal too.. And nobody wants to buy high mileage car, so before that 10 year period the car will loose value.. The car might be in good mechanical shape, but the value of cars in USA is Base on millage... |

radautoworks: Please stop spreading misinformation. This is FALSE. What I meant to say is that most Americans use their cars for about 10years or about and get rid of it or sale it .. Nobody keeps their cars that long ..the older the cars get the more it cost to maintain.. This is what I was really trying to say.. |

HeavenlyBang: Why are Kia/Hyundai engines so expensive? We have to separate two things ..USA kia/ elantra engines or does made specifically for Nigeria market or climate... I have a lot of Hyundai cars on my fleet USA spec. Those engines are not expensive compare to say camry that are like 240k .. From experience I never had to buy new engines for those Hyundai, very strong engine.. Am very impressed by those engines. But I was told that the American spec engine are like 150k to 200k around those figures... |

thebigkendo: Oga Oil seller.. Engines cannot last forever.. Not every engine problem is related to not using American spec mobil 1 or using water as coolant
Sold to who sir? The buyer of the sold expired car.. What will the person do with it? Won't he/she rebuild or replace the engine? So what is your point sir
Or do you mean motor should be scraped? Will you take your car to the junkyard & distroy it after it hits "expire date"
Even with meticulous car maintenance.. Engine can still give way, it is made up of moving parts Well I do apologise to a certain point.. Am using the American thinking on the Nigerian way ..which is very wrong..well off to my point, most cars build in USA usually have a life span ,let's say 10 years the most ..and those cars are now either been sold or exported to different countries.. And the reasons are too many, but one thing for sure, those cars are more or less expire and they have reached their limit... now with a little bit more care and good maintenance those cars can likely last another three years in Nigeria.. Keep in mind that there is wear and tear on the cars ,the body or metal on those cars are not as strong as before or strong as 50 years ago ..metals are getting expensive.. And most metals been made for new cars are recycled metals ..those are not even that strong... so safety should be put into consideration. But if u want to continue to rebuild by all means please do ..but for me personally if it comes to that stage an engine needs to be rebuilt, maybe it's time to sell the car to another sucker.. That is my take on it |

thebigkendo: For any engine that cost over 400k.. Rebuild is the way if possible We can agree to disagree.. What we need to be pushing here is how to prevent rebuild... if we do the rite maintenance on our cars ,than the engine will last longer and we won't have to talk about rebuilt.. Even if the car is well taken care of , the car should be sold before it gets to that point.. Everything has an expire date now... |

[quote author=HeavenlyBang post=71795632]The VQ35DE isn't particularly expensive. And the Highlander and FX35 are completely different kinds of cars.
Yes am aware that they are two complete different cars... but when u factor in the Nigerian factor eg maintenance factor ..the highlander fully loaded or not will be a lot easier to maintain than fx35 or fx45.. The Nigerian fuel will easily in due time damage the fx35 and ,fx45 ..those cars require high grade fuel.. Well people that drive in naija might say my car is fine.. I will tell them for now yes.. It is just a matter of time ..to me those engines are expensive.. And to get a good mechanic is another story on its own ...Me personally I will advice people not to buy those cars naija used , na the person that buy am used go suffer the most likely.... |

HeavenlyBang: 3.5L V6, 4.5L. Both are gas guzzlers. The FX35 is a guzzler even with the premium fuel that's recommended, and it's much worse with our fuel here.
The FX45 is, well... Let's just say your fuel budget for the month should be 40k+ if you do any considerable driving. Ha those fx45 and fx35 must use better oil by all means ..omo those engines can cost an arm and a leg ...better oil and coolant is a must for those cars...also premium gas is needed.. Well we call it gas in Yankee, ur guys call it fuel.. Either which way good gas , Mobil oil and good coolant is a must ..good cars ,for naija I will rather go for Highlander ...the fx35 and fx45 needs a special mechanic o ... |

To all my uber partners and customers out there .... It is very important to use proper oil .. One of my cars on uber is having an oil burn ..this is due to the fact that due to bad oil ,especially mineral oil or not changing oil on time ..I bought parts like seals ,pistons, rings pcv valves.. Costing me over $130 not including labour yet.. I will post pictures soon ..please use proper oil ,if you like buy the most expensive oil ever ..if the car has been abused due to lack of good oil from the start , depending on the abuse level ,the good oil will not solve the problem.. Take care of your cars from start to finish.. So you don't cry later.. Keep in mind also I still have your Mobile oil USA spec available.. I will upload the process of fixing the engine.. Thank you u all ... |
Car Talk › Re: My Experience "Ringing" An Engine by dru23(m): 9:53pm On Oct 04, 2018 |
temmym4: I have decided to share this with everyone just to help someone out there who might be in the shoe i was once in.
As a lover of Manual Tranny, i missed and wanted to keep one at home to drive so i eventually got a fairly used Nissan Primera p11 (1998) quite clean and ok, but one issue, Revving the engine brings out smoke from the exhaust, not a serious smoke actually but if u are the type that know your onions, it is clearly an indication that Valves and/or Rings and starting to worn out and allowing oil into them little by little.
*Please note that i knew about this before i agree with the deal and the price the vehicle was given out was ok for me to replace the engine if i wish to.
I guess this happened due to the Negligence of the former owner and the type of engine oil he uses.
The thing is, u cant find out yourself except if someone rev the vehicle for you while u watch from the rear.
Some other days, the vehicle brings out smokes for few seconds after parking overnight.
Apart from the smoking part, i took time to check underneath the engine bottom plate or oil pan (not a mechanic so i actually don't know what that is called) and found oil at the bottom, which actually indicates there is a leak. And d way thing look dow there, i can see that the pan hit a hard stuff and i guess there is a little crack
Now there are 3 things involved, 1. My engine oil is leaking from the bottom due to a crack oil pan 2. It sometimes brings out blue smoke after parking a long time, for instance, overnight.. then stops, i.e valve seals are bad. 3. Revving a bit higher brings out blue smokes too, visible only to people behind u.. i.e my Piston rings are beginning to go bad already.
Although the car moves well and the engine still very active, i know i v got to get solution to those stuffs before it kills the engine and probably smoking all day on with no compression later on.
Did i tell u i had to top 1L of oil every 2 weeks since it's shortening and after a long journey?
I decided to visit a trusted mechanic and i explained things to him.
On the issue of engine, i had an option of either buying another one which costs about 130k or rebuild my existing one with new valve seals and rings which costs around 30k.
I have heard a lot of sad stories concerning ringing so i opted that one out. Some even said it doesn't last more than 6 months. He smiled and explained some things to me.
"A successful Ringing involves an experience mechanic and also using genuine parts, " and that "some of the engines which is even sold to people as tokunbo are the refurbished ones, worked on with new rings by us here and resold as tokunbo"
I wasn't really convinced at first but after some months i made a calculation..
*A new Tokunbo engine costs around 130k (I wasn't ready to spend that on something am not even sure of the quality)
*My mechanic will rebuild my old engine for 30k
*I buy 1Litre oil for top-up every 2weeks at 2k, thats 4k for a month, apart from the regular service i do every 2 months with an oil of 4k.
So for a total of 6 months, l will use about 10Litres (10 cans of 1L) topping oil and 8Litres (2 cans of 4L) for regular servicing which makes a total of N28,000 just for the oil aside workmanship.
Now, why not put this money together and try out the engine ringing, use it for the same 6months. It's iron cast built engine anyway so it shouldn't be very hard for a successful rebuilding afterall, according to what i got online.
Besides, the money is not even up to what some people will give to a lady or buy drinks at a go. Even some people spend more than that to service their cars just one month.
Job started, oil pan was replaced.. New rings and valve seals done. The whole job took 3 days.
Before i went to pick it up, i read about what and what not to do after ringing an engine so i got that covered
Throughout my journey home, i wasn't convenient driving the car as i was busy listening to any sign of somethin breaking in the engine . .. Infact i go drive small and open the bonnet to check if water has mixed with the engine oil, or maybe coolant is now inside the gear oil
There was even a point where i could smell oil burning when the engine was warm after driving some minutes, i pulled over to see if oil has splashed all over the road
I have never paid attention to all my dashboard gauges like that single moment of driving away from mechanic workshop after the ring was done.
After that day, i began a countdown when that 6 months will come. More like someone who is waiting for a death sentence. Damn, some people can give u fear and discouragement ehn
To cut the long story short. 6 months has come and gone, car is used everyday and travels long journeys too, smoke no gree come o, instead na water vapor dey come out of it's exhaust every morning.. Especially steaming during cold mornings
Not a single drop of oil again either underneath or on oil stick.
The only thing i do now is change the oil and filter every 3 months or 3000KM whichever comes first. Nothin more.
Imagine still letting myself suffer till now and wasting money just because some Kazeems did a bad job for someone else, either an inexperienced one or he purposely bought knock off piston rings.
Also the first 1000KM after ringing matters too. I had to follow instructions online on how to break-in vehicle with new rings properly, i don't just depend on my mechanic advice only.
And yes, a "Kazeem" did the job for me,
My advice.
*Never let anyone push you, listen to advises, make use of the one that favours you, don't just just follow others' footsteps.
*Not everyone has got a lost of cash in the bank and can afford to buy a Tokunbo engine.
*Just because Mr A's job wasn't done successfully doesn't quite mean yours will follow the same pattern
*Don't be too stingy with your mechanic, you will be at the receiving end since they ll keep cheating you and buying you knock off parts, don't act too wise. Especially when rebuilding engine
*Get a competent mechanic with a fear of God who ll tell you the truth, it will help you and your car a lot
*I think Iron cast built engines are better rebuilt compared to the Aluminium ones. Infact i wont advice anyone with aluminium engine to rebuild, my own opinion.
*Personally, i feel getting competent mechanics that specializes on commercial vehicle will do a better job rebuilding an engine. My own opinion and from experience though.
My own story though. I hope it helps someone out there. Please share your experience too if you ever had an engine rebuilt, maybe someone out there can learn from the perfection and mistakes as well. Thanks for your input brother... when I tell people to use proper oil ,they will say that am peddling my wares around coz I sell USA spec Mobil oil ... I have the same issues with one of my uber cars.. The car has been using road side or 5naira kobo oil ..so when I now switch to Mobil extended performance oil , the car short oil ,to the level between max and empty, basically the middle stick ....no sign of oil leakages the car runs fine etc ..so after I Google am ,it says to first check pcv valves first and change that.. The pcv valves are good for about 20k miles or so. So now I bought a new pcv valves from eBay $10, pistons rings for $40.00 rings over size for $10 and seals for $10 ,so the only thing am waiting for now is a good mechanic.. Can you recommend me one that you use ..am Base in Lagos .and also after the first oil shorten, the engine has been topped with oil for the first time.. But after two weeks only a little of oil shorten , very small short.. Bur before it gets bad I want replace those things that might be causeing oil shorten... I don't want to sit till it is too late.. Thanks again for your post and please send me the mechanic number that did yours ... and you shall live long ... |

homeboy205: Your car is smoking you just don't know... But people tailgating you knows so it's hard Roy you to know... There is another way you can know, Bring the car up to operating temperature, have someone rev the car above 3000 rpm while in Park and while you are staying at the back.. I bet you will see the smoke... If not it's head gasket... Don't buy another engine because of worn out piston ring it can be rebuilt . Thank you my brother.. I have the same issues o.. I bought brand new pistons, seals, pcv valves, and pistion rings ..better to replace that first.. But before anything make dey check the pcv valves... I was told that it should be replace at least every 20k miles or so. Between 20k to 50k miles there about... and my car is over 145k miles.... |

The car had been using 5naira kobo engine oil.. I switch to Mobil extended performance 5w30 ,after about two weeks, the oil was shorten between max and empty of the dip stick ...the oil was than topped for the first time.. After two weeks later after topping ,the oil short was very small... Google is ur friend... so Google states that I should check the pcv valves .if the pcv valves is wet ,vacuum the oil out and replace it with a new one.. So I got a new pcv valves, pistons and rings ...I will update you guys with pictures very soon.. |
