Foreign Affairs / Reactions So Far To Trump’s Recognition Of Jerusalem by Dsov2016: 9:19pm On Dec 07, 2017 |
Cross posted from the Political Madness All the Time thread. A summary of reactions so far to Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital: […] it looks like things might get worse, as the decision carries critical security implications, not just for the Middle East, but for U.S. troops and embassies there, as well. Less than 24 hours after Trump’s announcement: Hamas has called for a third intifada — or uprising — against Israel, with protests already under way and more planned in the following days. Al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group al Shabab has issued a call to arms in response to U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, urging “all Muslims to raise arms and defend the blessed al-Aqsa from the Zionist occupiers supported by America, because what was taken by force can only be restored by force,” said spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud. Lebanon’s Hezbollah — which has fought wars pushing Israel out of the country’s south — called Trump’s decision a “treacherous and malicious aggression,” with the group’s parliamentary spokesman Hassan Fadlallah, saying the only way out is via armed “resistance.” Protests have broken out in several cities across Jordan, including the capital of Amman. Jordan has also called an emergency meeting of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation this weekend to cope with the consequences of Trump’s decision. Iraq, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, has urged Trump to reverse his decision, with the leader of a major Shia militia group, the Harakt Hezbollah al-Nujaba, saying that, “Trump’s stupid decision to make Jerusalem a capital for the Zionist will be the big spark for removing this entity from the body of the Islamic nation, and a legitimate reason to target American forces.” There have also been protests against the decision in the capital of Baghdad. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded to the announcement by accusing Trump of throwing the region “into a ring of fire,” while his government spokesman said Trump had set “a fire with no end in sight.” United Arab Emirates called the move a “complete defiance of the historic and permanent rights of the Palestinian people.” It also urged Arabs and Muslims to unite against the U.S. position on Jerusalem. Pakistan’s Jamaat-e-Islami has also called for country-wide protests against the United States — already, American and Israeli flags have been burned at rallies there. culled from: https://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/2017/12/06/if-were-screwed-were-gonna-set-the-world-on-fire-and-drag-everyone-down-with-us/ |

Chukazu: not really. most of those in the league have one thing in common Islamic fundamentalist/fanatics. if they rally around the us it gives room for their power over their country to wane leading to them being ousted. they will still support us but very secretly. his decision will increase fundamentalist influence which is a big no no to anti terrorism fight |

Alcatraz005: US is not as mythical as it seems. what gives them their heavy rep is the alliances its built, comics and Hollywood. But now that their influence is waning there are people now nipping at them. its the natural law of great empire the wax and wane and lose strength and influence this could be cause by the tiniest of decisions |

wow! what a speech! let all rise in applause. you really think DT is doing Christians a favor think again. As a Christian and a Nigerian I am happy that he is taking a stance against LGBT, but as a human and a Nigerian I am scared about his foreign policies. if you think his policies will not negatively affect Nigeria and humanity think again. You do know that boko haram can be said to be to have started due to american shenanigans in the 80s, civil wars and despotism in Africa can be traced to the cold war even small arms proliferation in Africa most esp in nigeria can also be attributed to them. I just hope this his Jerusalem policy will not negatively impact africa |

yazach:. bros thank u o. I am a Christian and even I do not support this. as a christian u are to be ur brother's keeper. is supporting this madness being ur brother's keeper when you knowhow many will die due to this decision. Israelis(jew) do not like Christians just go online and see Jewish belief/thoughts on Jesus. there are some reasons why Europe did not like them until the turn of the century. Trump is doing this to fulfill his promises to the white evangelicals whose support for Israel (Jerusalem) is even more than american Jewish societies. this evangelicals are trying to preempt the 2nd coming and that this decision on Jerusalem will cause Armageddon and the 2nd coming. 2 Likes |

Sports / Re: FIFA World Cup 2018 Draw On December 1st by Dsov2016: 6:52pm On Dec 01, 2017 |
At first glance, two-time World Cup winners Argentina look to have been given a fairly friendly draw. In truth, however, there is quality throughout this group. Croatia may have needed to come through the European playoffs, but they were one of the best sides at Euro 2016. Nigeria have a handful of excellent attacking players and sailed through a tricky qualifying group. And Iceland, as we saw at Euro 2016, can shock anyone. If Argentina aren’t at their best, this could be a fascinating mess. Argentina It took for Lionel Messi to score three goals in the last qualifying match for Argentina to make it to the World Cup but now that they’re in the tournament, it’s hard not to look at them as one of the favorites. It’s confounding that a team with so many world class players finds a way to consistently struggle, even with Jorge Sampaoli who was supposed to finally balance the team but could lead the team to only one win out of four games. But this is still a team with Messi, Mauro Icardi, Sergio Aguero, Angel di Maria, Ever Banega, Javier Pastore, Angel Correa and Gonzalo Higuain, just not in the Final. It’s do or die for this crop of Argentina players, and anything less than a win will be one more disappointment to add to a history of failures. Losing in three straight tournament Finals in the waning minutes and extra time has to have some lasting psychological effect on the players, but they will have to overcome that to fulfill the potential that everyone knows they have. Key player: Lionel Messi The best player of our generation and arguably the best player to ever play the game, and this will probably be his last chance to win the World Cup. It has to be his best performance. Even though Argentina is full of great players, they are entirely dependent on his ability. Whatever success they will have will have to come by his left foot. Iceland Before now, Iceland have never made the World Cup. They’re the smallest country ever to qualify for it. They only even made their first European Championship tournament in 2016 and made it all the way to the quarterfinals before going out. They’re a fun team that plays fascinating football, and they proved with a dominating qualifying run in a tricky group that their 2016 run was no fluke. Now they’re ready to take an even bigger step forward as a national team. Iceland play a tactical brand of football, but where that kind of phrase is usually associated with dire, overly defensive game plans, Iceland’s approach is anything but. They run well-coordinated patterns of movement for both their passing attack and defensive setups that often seem to leave opponents mystified, and they do it with incredible consistency. They’re not the most outright talented team in the World Cup by a long ways, but they’ve got a lot of underrated players who play way above their level as a unit, and that’s always a good recipe for a surprise result or three in a big tournament. Key player: Gylfi Sigurðsson Sigurðsson hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons with Everton so far — no Everton players have, to be honest — but his lethal skill on set pieces and ability to create magic from open play still leaves him as the most crucial part of Iceland’s squad. He’s their best playmaker by far and the top goalscorer in the squad, and no matter what they do to approach a given match, he’s going to be at the heart of it. Croatia In a world where football results were awarded for style, Croatia might just be going into the 2018 World Cup as the reigning European champions. Their 2-1 victory over Spain at Euro 2016 was the performance of the tournament and raised the very real possibility that this generation of players might go further than the great generation of the mid-’90s. Then they ran into Portugal and got smothered. Qualification for Russia started well, then nosedived. Coach Ante Čačić was sacked following losses to Iceland and Turkey and a draw with Finland, and Zlatko Dalić took over with just one game left, a winner-takes-the-playoffs game against Ukraine. They won that then dispatched Greece to secure their place, though they made short work of Greece. But off-field matters have rather soured the achievement: Thanks to a complex and still-emerging mess of corruption allegations involving players and administrators, support for the side is at a low ebb. Key player: Luka Modric. Now 32, this will perhaps be our last chance to enjoy Luka Modric at a major international tournament. Let's hope it goes well, then, because in form he's one of the most delightful midfielders going — a creative presence who makes everybody around him better and occasionally scores beautiful goals for himself, too. Nigeria African qualifying had a clear group of death, and Nigeria was in it. Any of their opponents — Zambia, Cameroon or Algeria — would have had a good chance to get out of any other group. But the Super Eagles coasted past all of them, going undefeated and finishing six points clear. At the moment, Nigeria appears to be the clear class of Africa and the continent’s best hope at making a deep run. John Obi Mikel continues to be the veteran leader of this team, but the rest of the squad has been made over considerably in recent years, and most of the starters in Russia will be 25 or younger. Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho have emerged as star players in the attack, joining up with the top performers from the generation slightly older, Ahmed Musa and Victor Moses. Key player: Alex Iwobi Mikel and Moses might be the leaders, but Iwobi will be the difference maker. He’s the most creative player in the side and will need to be at his best for Nigeria to make a deep run. Prediction Argentina Nigeria Croatia Iceland 3 Likes |

OreMI22: Then please proffer a solution. I believe we as a country missed the opportunity to stop ethnocentrism between the 40s and independence. what we needed at that point was a brutal acculturation ie destroying any and every shred of culture and creating a new singular one from the ashes of the old several ones similar to what sir ahmadu bello did in the northern region by making Hausa the lingual franca of the defunct region. The way that I see it, to stop intolerance in the country you need some major factors in place 1 . respect ie each and every tribe respects each other . few years back I would have said we are getting there but with nmadi kanu and others I would say we are decades from there 2 removal of the political class (elites). the fight for Nigerian independence was not as united as you think. in fact it was those who fought for independence then that fostered this problems. because of their ambitions they set tribe against tribe, people who had centuries of respect for each other notwithstanding their enmities and grudges suddenly the most brutal of enemies because of ego. i blame the founding fathers because now that they have become heroes and legends people are now more than ever blind to their flaws. 3. language in Nigeria we do not really have that clear unifying event that has brought us together(though we do have some like our shared hatred of politicians, epileptic power supply, lack of amenities, even shared grief) like an external war, deadly mass affecting epidemic, wide spread natural disasters what we have had instead was a polarizing ethnocentric conflict(the civil war) which has continued to leave a scar on our national unity. What we do have causing more scars is language. We have over 400 different languages in Nigeria and its another invisible dividing line in this country. what we all need to do is to either accept pidgin as our common language but with enough modification that it is different from English sort of like hinglish of India or torglish of the phillipines or create a new artificial language like Klingon. but the problem is that it would take decades before such a language would take even 50% population proficiency . While this new languages are taking roots we slowly let the other languages die a natural death, with our new national language, with proper encouragement and enticement from the government I give it 20 yes before the only language spoken will be the national language especially if its the pidgin route you go. another thing is to stop the creation of more traditional kingdoms where there were none in fact I would say we should rather centralise existing traditional stools. this will stop communal crisis. I can write on and on but what I believe is that as long as these factors are not in place( note that there are others and some are quite controversial in present day nigeria there will not be tolerance and unity and even should break up occur the game of one upmanship will continue. its one of the reasons why nigeria has not gone far in the committee of nations. when we rise above our so called place its so easy for outside forces to oppress and demoralizing us by knocking the different tribes head against each other. its the same method politicians game to win against us |

I am not a coward like u whose people claim to legitimacy is being miscreants, malcontents and impish people. I keep saying it I am on ground you are not. Benin people are accommodating but when a handshake reaches the elbow they defend themselves. You really do not understand what you are playing with. ask any Igbo man who was in Benin during the civil war what Benin people did to them when they entered Benin. I do not want to bring up that bloody era of recent Benin history, ask residents of Benin during that time of the heaps of bodies of biafran soldiers that littered benin of what was done in the schools then and those buildings around city centre. ask about how the military governor of the region of that time how he ran with bicycle out of benin and of how benin civilian men refused to handover and continued to fight even when guns were pointed at them. in benin we do not retreat nor do we surrender, what you start we will help you finish it and when you try to harm us we will deal with you 4 Likes 1 Share |
