Education / Protest: YABATECH Shut Down For 1 Month(see WHY) by dtermined(m): 5:22am On Feb 12, 2016
The management of the Yaba College of Technology has suspended academic activities in the school for four weeks as students continued protesting against the death of a final year student of the institution, Comfort Dazan, on Thursday.

The PUNCH had reported that the angry students went on the rampage in the college, shutting all its entrances and singing solidarity songs to protest against Dazan’s death, which they claimed was as a result of the poor state of the medical facility in the school.

It was reported that Dazan, a Higher National Diploma II student of the Office of Management Technology department, passed on after she fell ill and was rushed to the college’s medical centre, which allegedly demanded N35,000 before she could be attended to.

Our correspondents learnt on Thursday that though the protest continued, the presence of riot policemen at the school entrances, prevented the students from marching to the streets.

It was gathered that apprehension made the management to suspend academic activities for four weeks.

The Head, Public Relations Unit, Charles Oni, said in a statement that the suspension of academic work was to mourn Dazan.

He said, “The academic board of the college has suspended academic activities in the school for four weeks to allow the management, workers and students to mourn the loss of Dazan, who died on Wednesday.

“To forestall further destruction of the school property, students are to vacate halls of residence latest at 12pm on Thursday, February 11. The management has pledged to attend to other issues and requests by students in due course.”

It was learnt that the students, during the protest, vandalised the college’s medical centre’s ambulance, burnt a 5KVA generator, and damaged some vehicles belonging to the school and individuals.

Meanwhile, the authorities of the Federal Medical Centre, Oyingbo also on Thursday, admitted that Dazan died in the hospital.

In a statement by the FMC Head, Clinical Services, Dr O.T. Aseru, FMC said 27-year-old Dazan died just 10 minutes after arriving at the centre from the school medical centre.

Aseru added that Dazan was “very pale, cold, clammy, anxious and gasping” when she arrived at the hospital about 1am on Wednesday with a nurse from the college.

Also, at the University of Lagos, normalcy had returned with huge police presence observed at about 12.30pm on Thursday.

Some medical students of the university and their parents had on Wednesday disrupted academic activities, alleging that the school management deliberately introduced an academic promotion policy that would frustrate them from proceeding to the university’s College of Medicine, Idi-Araba, to continue their programme.

Health / BREAKING NEWS: Abuja Records First Lassa Fever Death by dtermined(m): 11:00pm On Jan 13, 2016

Nigerian health authorities have announced the death of a Lassa fever victim in Abuja, the first fatality in the nation’s capital since the latest outbreak in November 2015.

The minister of health, Isaac Adewole, made the announcement Wednesday evening at the National Hospital, the press director, Boade Akinola, at the health ministry, said in a statement.

The medical director of the hospital, Jack Momoh, who briefed the minister, said the patient was brought in unconscious from a private hospital in Kubwa, a suburb of Abuja, where he had been admitted for eight days.

The 33-year-old newly married lived in Jos, Plateau State, but travelled to see a family member in Kubwa because of his illness. He however died within 24hours of presentation at the national hospital.

The statement said the minister had directed that all primary and secondary contacts of the victim, including the staff of the private hospital in Kubwa, an Abuja suburb, where the deceased was first managed for one week before referral to National Hospital, be tracked.

He also advised that family members should report at the nearest hospital if anyone has fever for more than two days.

The minister, however called on the residents of Abuja not to panic but to maintain high level vigilance and present themselves for test if they feel unhealthy or they feel symptoms of Lassa fever which include high fever, stooling, tiredness, vomiting, etc., adding that self-medication should be avoided at this period.

The latest death from Lassa fever brings the total number of deaths to 43 in the country (from 10 states).

The government said on Tuesday that Lassa fever, an acute viral illness, had claimed 41 lives from 93 reported cases in 10 states of the country.

The first case of the current outbreak was reported from Bauchi in November 2015.

Mr. Adewole said at a news conference on Tuesday that the government had raised a four-man expert committee, chaired by Michael Asuzu, a professor, to visit Kano, Niger and Bauchi, the three most endemic states.

“The committee will embark on a fact finding mission, assess the current situation, document response experiences, identify gaps and proffer recommendations on how to prevent future occurrences,” Mr. Adewole, a professor, said.

The minister assured the public the task of the committee was not to apportion blame but rather to document lessons learnt for better planning of an affective responsive.

According to Mr. Adewole, part of the long term response is to establish an inter-ministerial committee to deliver a final blow on Lassa fever and other related diseases.

The committee comprises the ministers of Education, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Environment, Information and Culture as well as Health.

He advised communities to improve on their hygiene, including food hygiene and food protection practices.

He also urged the public to avoid contact with rodents as well as food contaminated with rat’s secretions and excretions.

According to him, the affected states are Bauchi, Nasarawa, Niger, Taraba, Kano, Rivers, Edo, Plateau, Gombe and Oyo.

“The public is hereby assured that government and other stakeholders are working tirelessly to address the outbreak and bring it to timely end,” said the minister.

He said the ministry had ordered for the immediate release of adequate quantities of “ribavirin”, the specific antiviral drug for Lassa fever, to the affected states for prompt treatment of cases.

Mr. Adewole said Nigeria had the capability to diagnose Lassa fever, adding that “all the cases reported so far were confirmed by our laboratories”.

Business / JUST IN: 2016 Budget Documents Stolen From National Assembly by dtermined(m): 6:38pm On Jan 12, 2016

The hard and soft copies of the 2016 budget documents President Muhammadu Buhari handed over to the National Assembly on December 22, 2015, have been declared missing, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report.

The Nigerian Senate was scheduled to commence deliberation on the proposed budget Tuesday (today).

But Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, shocked lawmakers at a closed-door session, when he told them the budget documents had been stolen, people familiar with the matter told PREMIUM TIMES.

Mr. Ndume, our sources said, explained that deliberation on the budget could therefore not begin until fresh copies of the documents were obtained from the presidency, the Ministry of Finance or that of national planning.

The Chairman, Senate Committee of Appropriation, Danjuma Goje, was subsequently mandated to lead a search for the documents and liaise with the presidency, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Ita Enang, and the national planning ministry on the matter.

The Senators also resolved that the matter be kept under wraps, saying making it public could embarrass the presidency, the National Assembly and the country.

Our sources said senators of the Peoples Democratic Party accused the presidency of being behind the theft of the documents, an accusation rejected by their All Progressives Congress’ counterparts, who reportedly said it was too early to speculate.

Some lawmakers told PREMIUM TIMES they are suspicious that the presidency might have colluded with the management of the National Assembly to quietly withdraw the documents after detecting some discrepancies in them.

“Can you imagine this kind of national embarrassment?” one senator asked. “Documents that were presented to us with fanfare have been stolen.”

The spokesperson for the senate, Aliyu Abdullahi, could not been reached for comments. So also is Mr. Goje, the chairman of the appropriation committee.

President Buhari had on December 22,2015 presented a N6.08 trillion budget for the fiscal year 2016 to a joint session of the National Assembly.

It was the first time in three years a Nigerian President would personally present a budget before the National Assembly.

Copies were however not distributed to lawmakers before they proceeded on Christmas and New Year holidays.

But weeks after the budget was presented to lawmakers, there were speculations that Mr. Buhari had withdrawn the documents to enable him to correct some discrepancies, a claim the presidency and the national planning ministry denied.

In the budget, capital expenditure takes N1.8 trillion, marking a significant over 300 per cent increment from the 2015 vote of N557 billion.

According to the estimate, N396billion is voted for education, being the largest sectoral allocation.

The health sector gets N296 billion while defence has N294 billion.
