In his sermon on Sunday 6th of November 2022, Pastor E. A. Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God advices his members to eat anyhow they like. He also floors health professionals advising people to eat right to the cheers of the congregation. Please note that this article is not about fighting our father in the Lord but to evaluate and reduce the extent of damage such advice would have on our society. Firstly, Pastor Adeboye was made bold to give such advice because of the grace of God over his life. When one clocks 80 years, naturally one begin to think eating right isn’t as important after all. But dishing out incomplete health advice to millions of people could put many at risk of developing diseases or death. I’m sure that daddy G. O. for a moment forget that many of his pastors and members are currently managing diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, arthritis, ulcer, kidney diseases, stroke and cancers. Advising them to eat anything and everything could give rise to disease complications which could result to early death — I’m certain this is not his wish for his people. Daddy’s advice is even made worse when he said health professional advices on food should not be given much reference and they should be taken with levity hands. This is not good enough from a top leader and influencer like daddy G. O. We must understand that eating right is becoming increasingly important in our daily lives due to spike in diseases and as such must be put in the front burner. My advice would be, irrespective of your age, endeavour to eat healthy. Because the cost of managing a disease is higher than the cost of eating right, endeavour to eat healthy. Because you cherish good health, endeavour to eat healthy. And if you value your life, do not eat anyhow, eatRight instead. Hunger virus has done far worse than Corona virus tell them The streets are quiet, full of tears gushing out like Montenegro tree fountain. Echoing in my ear only is the grumbling and sadness of my little puppy. Ooh Africa! Ooh The world! Ooh the surface of the earth! How helpless is the land flowing with Milk and Honey! With Song of Joy and hope we embraced year 2020 not knowing the deadly Coronavirus is waiting to devour our land. The saints were busy praying but our leaders were boasting of unavailable resources saying they are prepared for the outbreak even when we can hear, see and feel the weeping of Powerful Nations. The Virus finally break out, and fear reigns in every heart because the virus regard not calibre, races and background. They asked us to stay at home, promised us palliative (of which 60% is not getting to the street), and enforced measures to curtail the spread (they instructed us to avoid social gathering, wash our hands often with soap, sneeze at our elbow or piece of disposal cloth, wear face mask, use hand gloves and hand sanitizer), yet, only the rich can afford it due to inflation. They pay no attention to hunger virus that kills millions of people per day, they find no vaccine to the hunger virus that has ravage many souls. Widows, Orphans and Aged with no hope prefers death to life while NCDC keeps dropping amazing figures and messages to hungry souls. It is surprising that our government that boast of readiness against the outbreak put not into consideration hunger and consequences therein. Oh my Helpless Nation! Where is your right to life when your citizen keeps taking their life as the day passes by? They announced and modifies lockdown when the poor doesn't have hope for tomorrow, when average of the population feeds on daily income, when the academic calender of our tomorrow leaders has been disrupted, when our health sectors lack adequate facilities, when they didn't even have one direction or hope for vaccine, but what's their concern since hunger virus is not affecting the rich, since they consume complete square meal per day, since Europe is the only place they can provide adequate care for their headache, since their children future is not influenced by education but they won't see to that, rather they prefer to lock us indoor and get killed of hunger virus just for them to make some money of the pandemic. God is not asleep my Nation! What more can we point at, millions that are homeless, billions that are jobless, numerous living in extreme poverty, thousands dying daily of hunger and starvation, Uncountable death due to some poverty related diseases or countless graduate who passionately serve their homeland but the only reward for their trust in education and service to homeland are unemployment, poverty, stress walking streets to streets, town to towns in search of a green pasture. Those that suppose to be a hero by upholding the truth and raise an alarm against injustice forget the poor when they have the opportunity to sit with the eminent just for few thousands, judges who has the power to prosecute them sold out the oath of Justice to Injustice, they manipulate laws and orders to support their false claims just because there is a breathing billions of naira in their account, the say we cover our eye to justice, but they wink their eye and embrace injustice when they received huge alert of money. How long will Injustice Prevail on our Land! The tragedy that befalls this innocent land calls for awakening. Is this how some African will die of imported virus even when some don’t know the route to airport? They neglect the knowledge of Dietitian in assembly and distribution of palliative, they have recently forgotten we can't just eat any food during this period but foods that will boost immunity and improve our general well being to fight the imported virus, but little or no recognition is attributed to the concerned expert (Dietitian -Nutritionist). Our patients with coronavirus in different isolation centers were feasting on junks and snacks and they call it treatment. What is the role of food experts as part of the medical team! What a mismanagement! In all four corners of our Nation dwells fear and confusion, Staying at home is Hunger virus, roaming on the street is Coronavirus. The firewood of this country is for only those who can take heart that's why not all can gather it (Kofi Awoonor). Nigerians are tired! They need to cater for families, They deserves good, nutritious and nourishing meal, they deserves fresh fruits and vegetables, They deserves early morning sunlight for their skin and bones, they want to shed some pounds. The Association of Nigerian Dietitian(AND), Lagos State chapter called on the three tiers of government to sensitise food vendors on how to handle, prepare and store foods to prevent outbreak of non-communicable diseases. Mr Olusola Malomo, National Publicity Secretary, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, and Mrs Jessie Nwankwo, President, Association of Nigerian Dietitian (AND), Lagos State chapter, made the plea on Friday in Lagos. They spoke at an awareness programme to celebrate the 2019 World Food Day in Lagos. The Day is commemorated on Oct.16 annually. It is set aside to celebrate the progress made toward zero hunger goals. Its theme was: “Our Actions are Our Future, Healthy Diets for a Zero Hunger World.’’ In her remarks, Malomo said: “Our health action today determines our future; we have a lot of non-communicable diseases coming up such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, hyper cholesterol and so on. “All these diseases are food-related which means they are either from improper diet or inappropriate portion of foods and they have to do with the genesis of some of these diseases. “Even, other factors can cause these diseases such as genetic and lifestyles, but we should know that diet play a major role in some of these diseases,’’ he said. Malomo, however, advised people to always eat their traditional nutritious foods such as water yam to reduce obesity and overweight among children and adults. He said that nowadays, people were gradually gravitating from the traditional diets such as yam, local rice to nutrients drain dense food like pastries. The nutritionist said that was why we came out to the public to celebrate the World Food Day and sensitise them on the prevalence of some of these diseases. “Today, we will be demonstrating food items that can reduce or prevent some of these diseases. “Some of our members from different hospitals in Lagos are displaying their food items and their nutrient values such as healthy drinks, smoothies, some local foods and fruits,” he said. Malomo said that food safety start from the market so people should ensure that the market places were clean and quality of the food and fruit items were good before buying. Also, Nwankwo said that food safety and hygiene were more of advocacy and creating more awareness on right policy on food that would benefit individuals, government officials, society and the country. “Nutritionists and food experts should team up with the environmental officials to checkmate foods being sold at market places in order to improve food hygiene and safety. “We discover that some of the food vendors lack hygiene, especially the environment where they are selling their foods are always dirty. “Government can also help by monitoring all the food vendors and give them the right information on how they can be cleaned with their foods,” she said. Nwankwo advised individuals to always identify their body system by visiting and registering at any registered and certified nutritionist at least twice in a year to prevent any form of diseases. “Nutritionist will educate an individual on what healthy foods they can eat because some people always claim they know the right foods to eat. “People should know that eating good food can guarantee healthy food, better future and wealthy living,” Nwankwo said.

Chain of transmission of HIV/AIDs part two(2) The heaven was pregnant as the sky was cloudy as if there will be downpour coupled with extreme cold. Looking through the window of my tall building, I could see it was 3rd of September 2019. My eyes vividly shows the Joy that emanates from Heart for it’s a day to my birthday and also my Nysc monthly clearance day. I jumped up from my flat student bed at exactly 5am, greeted my fellow Corper roommate, washed the pot I used in cooking concoction rice a day before , swept the room and dash down to the bathroom to have my bath, I was so excited that day not because the following day happens to be my birthday alone, but I will also be traveling to Lagos to meet my long waiting family and little son ‘Darasimi’. I finished my clearance around 12 noon, after which I took keke (as popularly called in the state) to airport road Warri, Delta state to board a bus going to Lagos, unfortunately, no more bus. After thorough waiting, I was lucky to get a bus, and that's how the journey full of life changing experience started. Take a sip of water as I unveil the deal. Sitting at the back seat with me was Sis Elohor, who originated from Delta state, Nigeria and a bonafide student of One Prestigious University in Nigeria. It was through the interesting conversation I discovered she was traveling to Lagos for a job interview. As an Advocate of health, I used the medium in bringing an educating health issue as have been willing to discuss chain of Transmission Part 2 with my audience. I started by saying ‘Do you even know many people has been denied of Job by reason of their Health? Amazingly, she said, tell me more. Of course, am Just like the heaven early this morning, am pregnant with words and my time of delivery is here as am in severe labour period to deliver on the escalating spread of the deadly Virus ‘HIV’ Many were souls after scaling through the examination phase, that were screened out due to medical report of the organization revealing deadly virus that can spread through to other staffs, causing low productivity of the organization, I explained. Her deep breathe tells me how much the word hit her. Afterwards, I showed her the captivating series on the ‘Chain of transmission of Hiv/Aids part 1’. the series must have illuminate her world as She requested of me to put into writing her experience in this world unpredictable which I also have on record for easy recall. Will you like to dine with me on some Vegetable salad as we Unveil ‘The Chain of transmission of Hiv/Aids part 2’ There lives a man called Mr Oloye in the state of Ogun, where He manages a bakery. He is a married man, blessed with three kids whose wife happens to be a traveler. She can spend several days, weeks, months and even years on business trips paying no regards to her marital home. Mr Oloye mystery started when his wife travelled abroad for years on a business trip. Mr Oloye has always been a faithful and responsible man until this fateful day, when his manhood impose on his personality restlessness, untamed longing and arousal for sex. It was already Late at night, he tried all possible means to satisfy the hunger and appetite for sex but all to no avail as he drove out to a very far hotel outskirt the city to patronize a commercial sex worker (prostitute). It was the deep inhalation and exhalation which is evident in profuse sweats that shows how deep and long He has been thrusting with the tall fairy lady laying naked on the mattress. They must have been overwhelmed by the pleasure of the moment that they did not know when the condom got bursted. To him, it was a night of enjoyment not knowing it was also a night of invasion by infection. The pleasure Mr Oloye derived from the moment pose a great threat on his thought, as he keeps reflecting on how sweet it will be if He can be making out on a daily basis in His bakery instead of going to hotel and got caught by someone who knows him. While thinking on what to do, He resolve to pretend to employ a sex mate as a maid, to cook for him and his kids, do some chores and fulfilling His actual purpose of going to bed with her. During one of His trip to the Hotel, He came across Halima, who hail from Oyo. Her beauty is indescribable, Heavily loaded with W-Shaped Buttocks with adorable curve. Halima is though from a poor home but she believes God has blessed her with adorable body structure which is an enough resources for her to earn for her living. It is not even up to a month of their Symbiotic partnership that Mr Oloye's made his intention known to Halima which she joyfully consented since Money is Involved and She hope with time, she may be legally married to Mr Oloye. Their affairs keep growing stronger and stronger in the name of taking Care of her boss and taking proper care of the kids the Boss madam left behind uncared for. As days, weeks and months is passing by, Mr Oloye started loosing weight, He is becoming lethargic and He also started noticing soar taste which prompt two of His workers to take Him to the Clinic for Biochemical check up, the result of which shows the presence of the deadly virus(HIV) in His System. What a shame he has brought upon him self and a bad legacy to His follower. The shame and Ignorance on His path as regard the Treatment of HIV virus complicate His condition as He lost Hope in Living again, waiting patiently for His Demise. It was no longer news to the populace that Mr Oloye died of HIV for He became object of mockery to both Old and young and to some, a human to pity. Halima need not to consult an oracle nor undergo any test before knowing She is a chronic carrier of the Virus. Knowingfully well that Mrs Oloye is not around and the children were too young to comprehend the tune of the song nor the beat of the drum, she promise to revenge and spread the Virus to His entire House and if possible workers. Ever since then, she has been using the same equipments (Blades, toothbrush, needle, spoon etc) that comes in contact directly with Bio fluids(Sweats, Blood, Tears etc) for the Children. She also gave out herself seductively to the boys working at the bakery, landlord in the streets, young boys who loves to eat anything twisting beneath gown, skirt and trouser. In the World today, Some married men in the street derive pleasure in extramarital affairs for many reasons such as; My wife is too spiritual, She is S.U, My wife is too fat and she always look like elephant on bed, My wife like snoring and do fart on bed, She is not fashionable and they are due for taking out, My wife usually denied me of sex among others. As of Halima, You don't need the misdeed of your wife as She is just irresistable to man who likes Sex. Men like her, as she is able and capable, young with pleasant personality, well structured body, blessed with abundant body resources and can drill them right to make them feel Heaven on bed. It has spread like a flame of a burning house among the young and old men in the street and street after of the new Sex machine known to be Halima.. Hmmmm! Halima then became a hot pepper soup which every promiscuous person want to have a taste. After two months, Halima started feeling sick and ran to her home town in Igboho, Oyo state. Two weeks later she died because she lacks the proper knowledge of appropriate medication and life after Virus. Some of those who got the infection unknowingly through Halima later discovered after infecting their wives and the unborn baby at birth. Some that have the knowledge of Life after infected with the Virus were given palliative treatment and the Ignorant died with their ignorance. *What a chain of transmission!* It was the Horn of the Driver indicating time to Alight that bring me back to the consciousness of the real world as Sis Elohor Concluded her story. Wow Lagos here I come. Written by:Fasuyi Adeshola Adeyemi CEO Standout Ambassador for Nutrition Advocacy Edited by:Oladosu Samuel (funnab)

Mr Charles was a cashier at a popular commercial bank in Lagos. He is sex addict that He derive pleasure in having fun with every fine girl that come across his path. To Him, Sexual intercourse is an opportunity and advantage. He will either collect their mobile Number via a small note, bank teller or sent an I. T boy to the girls. As a matter of Fact, He will be a living dead if a day passed by without Him laying his finger upon a Lady. He was unfortunate one day when He came across Chidera, She was a 500l student of DELSU, who believes survival in school depends on sleeping with numerous men to cater for her financial needs as regard feeding and other fees. In this struggle of survival Chidera was infected of the popular virus(HIV) by one of the man he slept with two month ago at asaba before meeting Mr Charles. Hanging out as usual for Mr charles at one hotel close to His working place at Ketu, Lagos state. She spent some moments with Chidera eating, drinking and caressing eachother. They resolved to sex and they had sex without protection. In Chidera's memory, it was the best Sex ever and a sweet day to recall, but things seems different in Mr Charles diary as He was infected this same day unknowingly. Just a day with Chidera brought a permanent regret into His life. What a Destiny Unsecured! Few days later, Mr Charles had another unprotected sex with Susan, His wife cousin who is always spending Her Holiday with the Family. Susan visits have always been irresistable for the Family as she has always been helping with chores due to the Wife tight Schedule in Saving Lives. She has been having secret affairs with Mr Charles for a year and above under the same roof unknowingly to Mrs Charles. Of course, Mrs Charles is a Nurse and Her Night duties are opportunities for Mr Charles and Susan. Mr Charles will pay no attention to medical check up, and the only help His wife keep rendering is the Provision of Ache drugs. Susan is an HND 1 student of Lagos state polytechnic studying finance. Her knowledge in finance couldn't provide a solution to her fianancial crises that abode with Her and Her Fiance. Her affairs with Mr Charles was triggered by the huge sum of money Mr Charles always give to Her whenever she is going back to school. Her fiance find it difficult to correct her because She is the source to His Mouth. Chucks Friends will not let chucks break up with Her because Ladies of such character are Rare, providing assistance for the Broke Fiance financially. Susan before returning to campus spent some times with Her Fiance and She will not deny Him of Sexual Intercourse as usual, they both had unprotected sex and chucks became a Virus Victim Unknowingly too. What a Chain of Ignorance! It was of no Suprise when it came to Light that Mrs Charles was Infected of the Virus as this is Inevitable as long as Mr Charles who has Phobia for Medical Checkup remains Her adorable Husband. Her first Love exposure was with Chucks, as a result, She couldn't distinguish between Love and Sex. Chucks will say "Tobi is good on bed and classical compared to Susan, she can go longer on bed, do Mouth Action and the likes. All these Features makes chucks cherish Tobi more. Few days after Susan's Visitation, Tobi who came to find comfort in His boyfriend as regard Her Mum sickness had Sex unprotectedly with Chucks and she became a Victim of an Everlasting Discomfort through HIV. What a Wrong Exposure! Mr Bosun, the Great, Briliant, Famous and Distinguish Lecturer of the Prestigious Federal University of Technology, Akure, who comes to Lagos every Thursday to check on his family and return back to Akure on Sunday, decided to help this beautiful and adorable Lady standing by the roadside on His way back to akure on Sunday Evening, Tobi who decided to visit her sick mother in Akure too was lucky to have a free ride with Mr Bosun. They were engrossed in their Conversation that Tobi started getting carried away by the sweet word of Mr Bosun. They got to Akure lately and Mr Bosun beckon on Tobi to spend the Night with Him amd go home the following day. Tobi complied with all pleasure as She found comfort in Mr Bosun's encouragement and Knowingfully well Mr Bosun is a lecturer, the thought of making ground in achieving Her aim of Direct Entry into FUTA seems to be coming into reality. They had Unprotected Sex that night. Mr Bosun helped her to the park the next day and gave her huge amount of money for her welfare, and assured her His line is always open to her. Mr bosun is very tough and very strict when it comes Tests and Exams, He was famous by the number of students that failed His course yearly due to non compliance to His policy. He extort money from male and go through female laps to award good grade. It is no longer breaking news to the students when olosho make distinction in Mr bosun course. Within two semesters, Mr bosun infected more than 42 female students in the school with the Virus. What a corrupt world! This infected ladies has be it boyfriend, fiance, or side chicks that they do have unprotected sex with, and that is how HIV continue to spread like a gas flame in our various institution and the society at Large. It is important to note that a Chain start from Individual, through families to communities. Break the Chain today by sharing this with Friends, Fiance, Families, Fellowship etc. A, B, C and D in Preventing HIV/AIDS A- Abstinence B- Be faithful to your Partner C- Condom D- Do not share sharp objects Strike a Warning! Hundreds of villagers fled their homes in Nigeria’s northeast late on Saturday after an attack by Islamist militants from the Boko Haram group, militia officials and witnesses said. No casualties were reported but the raid highlighted fragile security in Nigeria’s northeast, where the army is still battling to end a conflict that erupted in 2009. Militants arrived in trucks in Jimmi, 5 km (3 miles) from Maiduguri city, and opened fire, setting homes ablaze and also attacking an informal refugee camp. “Boko Haram terrorists this evening attacked Jimmi village,” militia leader in Maiduguri Musa Ari said. “They burnt homes in Jimmi and tents in the camp.” Military authorities scrambled reinforcements and fighter jets to repel the attack, said militia leader Ibrahim Liman. Panicked villagers from the area fled to nearby Maiduguri, capital of Borno state which along with neighbouring Yobe state has been at the centre of the jihadist insurgency. “We left our village to escape Boko Haram who attacked our neighbours in Jimmi,” said Bale-Shuwa village resident Suleiman Balarabe. He said villagers saw military jets flying overhead towards Jimmi. “The sounds of guns coming from Jimmi terrified us and made us leave our homes because we were afraid they were going to attack our neighbourhood,” said Sanda Gini, a resident of Jiddari-Polo area on the outskirts of Maiduguri. In April, scores of Boko Haram fighters launched a gun and suicide attack on Jiddari-Polo when they advanced on Giwa barracks where hundreds of their militant comrades are being detained. Insurgents fired automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades at troops before they were repelled with aerial support. Despite government insistence Boko Haram jihadists are near defeat, in recent months the militant group has carried out major attacks on military targets, killing dozens. Boko Haram’s nine-year conflict has killed an estimated 27,000 people and displaced two million, creating a humanitarian crisis and spilling into Nigeria’s northern neighbours Punchng Boko Haram borno

The management of Akanu Ibiam
International Airport , Enugu , says the
World Health Organisation recently
held talks with all the agencies
operating within the airport as part of
efforts to contain the spread of the
Ebola Virus Disease . The Airport Manager, AIIA , Mr. Mgbemena Orjiako , said the sensitisation was not limited to the EVD alone but also on other communicable diseases that could be transmitted by air passengers . He said the airport management had since commenced thermal and body screening of all passengers passing through the airport. He added, “ Air travel is the quickest means of moving around from continent to continent . So , if there is a contagious disease of such magnitude , it can easily move from country to country . “ So, WHO has been here and has equally assisted us in giving talks on how to tackle it; what to watch out for, and what to do to prevent the spread .” Orjiako said the Port Health Authority, in collaboration with other agencies at the airport , had held an emergency meeting where they carefully planned how to forestall the spread of the EVD at the airport in case of any eventualities. He said , “ Enugu airport is very serious on monitoring and controlling the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo because international flights are coming into the airport three times a week. The airport has also created an area where we can take away any passenger discovered to have an abnormal temperature. “ There is an area in the arrival hall where we keep them and also check their temperature discreetly while they are coming in without their knowing . We also have sanitisers in different corners at the airport where people can wash up . ” According to Orjiako , there is always a joint monitoring of the movement of passengers into the airport every Tuesday , Thursday and Saturday . “ We pay greater attention to those moving into the airport because most of them may be coming from Addis Ababa but they may be transiting from other parts of the world. So, we want to be very cautious and we don ’ t want anything to go wrong, ” he added. |
By fasuyi Adeyemi June 5 2018 Malnutrition is a condition that results from eating a diet in which nutrients are either not enough or are too much such that the diet causes health problem. It may involve calories , protein , carbohydrates, vitamins or minerals . A nutritionist, Yemi Martin's a student of Rufus Giwa polytechnic Owo, Ondo State. when speaking with our correspondent said on monday. not enough nutrients is called undernutrition or under nourishment while too much is called overnutrition . Undernutrition can lead to delayed growth or wasting, while a diet that provides too much food, but not necessarily balanced, leads to obesity. According to the nutritionist , In many parts of the world, undernutrition results from a lack of food. In some cases, however, undernourishment may stem from a health condition, such as an eating disorder or a chronic illness that prevents the person from absorbing nutrients. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), malnutrition is the gravest single threat to global public health. Globally, it contributes to 45 percent of deaths of children aged under 5 years. The nutritionist Yemi Martin's HND one student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic said Undernutrition is when a person lacks nutrients because they do not consume enough food. Poor diet may lead to a lack of vitamins , minerals, and other essential substances. Too little protein can lead to kwashiorkor, symptoms of which include a distended abdomen. A lack of vitamin C can result in scurvy. Scurvy is rare in industrialized nations, but it can affect older people, those who consume excessive quantities of alcohol, and people who do not eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Some infants and children who follow a limited diet for any reason may be prone to scurvy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 462 million people worldwide are malnourished, and stunted development due to poor diet affects 159 million children globally. Malnutrition during childhood can lead not only to long-term health problems but also to educational challenges and limited work opportunities in the future. Malnourished children often have smaller bodies when they grow up. It can also slow recovery from wounds and illnesses, and it can complicate diseases such as measles, pneumonia, malaria , and diarrhea . It can leave the body more susceptible to disease. The nutritionist urged Nigerians to consume well balanced food and eat enough fruit and vegetables. NAN. |

2018 Regular consumers of crabs are less prone to chronic heart disease and can have long lifespan, a nutritionist, Mr Olusola Malomo, said on Friday. “In regions, where seafood including crab is consumed regularly, the people usually have maximum lifespan,’’ Malomo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Malomo, who works with the Ajegunle General Hospital, Lagos, said that crab intake would support immune system and cardiovascular health, heal wounds quickly, enhance vision and promote health in pregnancy. He added that eating crabs would make the skin fresh, support blood production, aid weight loss, increase energy and prevent cell and tissue damage. The nutritionist urged Nigerians to consume at least two servings of crabs weekly. “Crabs can also become a delicious way to balance energy levels in the body, while its aroma serves as an appetiser. According to the nutritionist, crabs meat contains calcium, carbohydrate, copper, energy fat, iron, Omega 3 acid, phosphorus, protein, selenium, zinc and vitamins A, B1 and B12. “Crabs are a great source of protein because they contain meat, which is not linked to heart disease. “The protein in crab is of high quality and very digestible for people of all ages. “Crabs are very rich in calcium, which is responsible for strong bones and teeth. “It is also rich in vitamins and minerals; crab meat is low in fat and contains Omega 3 polyunsaturated acid which helps to provide protection from heart disease, and aids brain development. “Selenium plays a key role in the human’s antioxidant defence system, preventing damage to cells and tissues. “All shellfish are good sources of selenium but crab meat is especially rich in the mineral,’’ Malomo added. He, however, advised that crabs should be eaten moderately. (NAN) |

Cape Town - Within a week, the State’s key witness in an Ocean View triple murder case was dead, and the four alleged gangsters accused of the murders were free. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed all the charges against the alleged members of the Junkie Funkies gang had been dropped. Friends and family of slain State witness, Shileen Jacobs, mourn her death in Ocean View. She was allegedly killed by hit men after she turned State witness. Picture: Brenton Geach. Credit: INDEPENDENT MEDIA This comes after State witness Shileen “Linkie” Jacobs was shot dead last Monday. She had witnessed the murder of Kim Roberts and newlyweds Leonardo and Shannon Fortune on December 5 last year. Four men, Tashwell Koopman, Mario Theunis, Tyron Taylor and Carl Barendilla, were charged with their murders and were set to go on trial in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court. Investigating officer Craig Phillips had testified during the bail application in April that the intended victim of the hit was Roberts. He said the Fortunes were ”at the wrong place at the wrong time”. Jacobs could place the four men at the scene of the crime and had identified them. This put her in danger, but she refused witness protection. Her mother, who asked not to be named, told the Cape Argus her daughter wanted to be “free” and not play the part of a victim by submitting to intimidation. Her family said many attempts had been made on Jacobs’s life. The first alleged attempt was after the four men had removed their balaclavas and spotted her shortly after the triple murder. It was alleged that Koopman tried to shoot Jacobs in the face while his accomplices fled, but she survived as the gun jammed. Phillips told the court Theunis went to the State witness’s house and threatened her. He allegedly told her not to report anything to the police and offered her money to silence her. Her grieving mother said further attempts were made on her daughter’s life in the weeks following the men’s arrest. Last Monday at 1.50am, they finally succeeded when Jacobs ran away from witness protection. She lay in a pool of blood in Hydra Avenue after a gun’s magazine was emptied into her chest. On the evening of Jacobs’s funeral on Tuesday, her family pointed to some young juveniles called “bokkies” who they said helped kill her, but would not speak to the police because they were afraid they would be next on their hit list. Residents say the child hitmen, recruited to commit murders, are feared even though they are as young as nine. “I am heartsore about Linkie’s death, about the messy way she was killed. She did not deserve it. Everyone knows who killed her, but no one will talk. If you lived here and have seen people drop like flies for even speaking to police, you will understand the fear,” a family member said. Jacobs’s grandmother, 69, said: “The men who killed my granddaughter walk up and down. But we will leave justice in the hands of God.” Residents were angered that the four men were walking around as “celebrities” after they were released. Many said they would have preferred them behind bars, but admitted it would not make a difference because, “they can reach you even if they are in prison”. Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk confirmed two young men were arrested in connection with Jacobs’s murder at the weekend. “Two suspects aged 16 and 17 have been arrested, both suspects are juveniles. “One was arrested on Saturday and one on Monday. Both appeared in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court yesterday.” Criminal law expert William Booth said prosecutors and the police had a major problem keeping star witnesses safe during trials. “There have been instances were important witnesses have been killed,” he said. In gang-ridden areas - such as Ocean View - criminals work with impunity which puts witnesses at risk. “The witness may be very vulnerable. Prosecutors and the police must be alive to that fact. “This is one of the reasons why the witness protection programme was brought into being. The question is how effective is that? Some witnesses don’t want to comply with the programme which is governed by police and the NPA. “Many witnesses don’t want to comply because they are placed away from their friends and family,” he said. One of Jacobs’s friends, who saw her friend being killed, said she would miss her dearly. “She was a wonderful person. Full of life and laughter,” she said. Fasuyi_adeyemi@yahoo.com

A 400-level student of the University of Lagos, who was rusticated for his post on Facebook, Olorunfemi Adeyeye, talks about some issues raised by the authorities of the varsity in a statement and his recent arrest on the premises of the university with GBENGA ADENIJI We learnt that you were recently arrested by security operatives on the premises of the University of Lagos. What really happened? It was a minor issue which was blown out of proportion. I and three of my friends were discussing and moving towards the school. At the small exit gate of the university’s main gate, I was exchanging a contact with one of them from my phone. We were moving at a slow pace and one of the security officers told us not to loiter in an unruly manner. I nodded at him to show my acceptance of his order and also pleaded with him to be patient with us as we were almost through with the contact exchange. To our surprise, the officer replied by launching into a verbal attack. He called my friend unprintable names. They started exchanging words. The officer manhandled him and this left my friend with a scratch on his body. It later resulted into a heated argument and noticing the gathering of students to the scene, I and my other two friends advised that we should move to the security unit to resolve the matter amicably. My friend was dragged to the security unit and we all went there with another officer. When we got to the unit, we were told to make a statement which we did and we learnt that the university’s chief security officer had been informed of the incident. While giving a statement, some of the officers kept making some comments directed at me. One of them pointed at me saying, ‘‘Were you not the one who insulted the vice-chancellor? The VC has caught you.” One of the officers also said “You do not want to graduate; you are the Sahara agent, right?” I was taken aback and wondered the link between the matter and my rustication. What did you do next? We were at the security unit all through waiting to be attended to but nothing happened. We started making contacts to reach the CSO to resolve the matter. We did not hear from him and we were not released. We slept at the security unit. At about 5.45am, some policemen from Sabo Police Station came to take us to the station. Our shirts were tied to each other in twos. At the station, we made a statement and we were interrogated by a police officer. He insinuated that we should give a statement that we were cult members, planning to attack the school. We vehemently refused to make such a statement. After that, my friends were given their phones but I was not given mine. They called mine an exhibit because I took the picture of the officer manhandling my friend with it. I took the picture to have a pictorial evidence of what happened and not for any other reason as the police officer alleged. We were later locked up in a cell. Some student leaders later arrived at the police station. At that point, we were taken to the office of the Divisional Police Officer where the matter was resolved after the intervention of the CSO. With the incident, are you in any way scared for your life? On ethical grounds, I know I am no longer safe. I had received a lot of advice concerning safety. The university in a statement said you and other rusticated student leaders were not victimised because of your involvement in a protest on campus. It stated that you were found to have breached a part of the regulations in the university’s 2015-2016 student information handbook. What is your reaction to this? It was rather disheartening that the university came out to say that. It is an untrue statement. I and other student leaders were invited to a panel. The panel was known as, ‘Special senate disciplinary committee on recent students’ protest.’ I have the letters with me and they indicated that we were rusticated for our participation in the protest. Everything I wrote in the article I posted on my Facebook page pointed to the fact that the resolution of the Senate was not a product of a democratic process especially with the student leaders who participated in the protest. As of the day I was admitted into the university till the day I was rusticated, there was no regulation in the university’s student handbook that stated “unauthorised use of university name, logo, etc in a manner that would bring the university to disrepute.” I saw the “emergency” handbook a day after I was rusticated with a student who claimed that only three of them were issued the book in a class of 78 students. This affirms that it was a “kangaroo” verdict. It was premeditated and retroactive because I went to the panel with the latest handbook i.e for the 2014/2015 academic session and there was nothing of such in it. Most students, especially freshmen, do not have the ‘emergency’ handbook. I can say convincingly that the handbook was ‘prepared’ to nail me. It is laughable because the university cannot attach that sub-section in clear legal terms in its allegations against me. What is your position on the university’s submission that you abused the vice-chancellor yet expect to receive the university certificate? I am of the opinion that the university is a place for engagement of intellectual minds. It should be a breeding ground for managers; people who will be able to manage issues with all sincerity. A Nigerian graduate should be a leader who has undergone a certifiable training and must be open to criticisms and scrutiny. I have noted in one of my articles that if certificates amounted to civilisation and development, Nigeria would be the best place to be. I know some people who have about three master’s degrees and two PhDs. I know someone who enrolled for a master’s programme because of a N10,000 increase in his salary. We are too conscious of certificates and this has brought little or no development to the country. It is high time we became educated and not “certificated.” By mentioning the vice-chancellors’s name in my article on my Facebook page, I did two things. First, I awoke him to his responsibilities in the nation as a scholar. This is the same with other personalities I mentioned in the article. Also, I exposed the administrative and managerial failure I noticed in the system. The language I employed might be harsh which I had apologised repeatedly, yet I maintained that the thoughts in the article were my opinions about the university’s Senate and should not be censored. I wonder why university administrators cannot tolerate a newly-reinstated students’ union that was proscribed for 10 years. Did you organise a ‘group of boys’ as alleged by the university to cause commotion and chaos at the university gate? It was surprising to read such. The said ‘boys’ are serving corps members. It was so stated in the statement by the university. I do not think any corps members would leave their states of deployment to come and cause chaos at the gate of a university. It was a case of trumped-up charges against us. We were the ones who asked the security men to move to the security unit to resolve the issue instead of creating a scene at the gate. I did not organise any group of boys. It is part of the desperation to nail me. How would you react to the claim by the UNILAG authorities that you were arrested on campus because of your desperation to attract cheap publicity, earn public sympathy and continuously bring the name of the university into disrepute? It is an opinion which I won’t censor as a sensible and civilised democrat though they censored mine. Popularity or sympathy does not define a man. A man is defined by his level of consciousness. Have you been barred from entering the university? I have not been declared persona non grata on the premises of the university by the school authorities. We were called cult members — Aina Adeyeye’s friend, Tomi Aina, who was arrested alongside the former, tells MOTUNRAYO JOEL that the incident was premeditated For how long have you known Adeyeye? I have known him for more than three years. I think I was in part three at the time we met. He was in part one at the time. We were roommates in –Room 107, Biobaku Hall, University of Lagos. How would describe his personality? He is unassuming, easy-going and very intelligent. The UNILAG authorities said you were part of ‘a group of boys’ mobilised to cause commotion in the school. What is your view about this? It is convenient to say such a thing. When I read the statement issued by the university, I was disappointed. I was not part of any group of boys hired to foment trouble. As a matter of fact, I was on campus that day to check the list of Batch ‘B’ National Youth Service Corps members. After checking it, I called Femi who said he was on campus and we arranged to meet. We met around the school gate and joined by two other friends. As we were leaving the school, Femi was exchanging a phone contact with one of us. While we were doing that, a security officer approached us and told us to walk fast. Femi, though engrossed with the person he was exchanging contact with, nodded to the security officer to affirm that they would do as directed. He thought they were proving reluctant and in the process, he applied force. We later said we should move to the security unit to settle the matter as some students were already gathering. I thought that at the unit, we would resolve the matter amicably. But it was unfortunate that when we got there, rather than settling it, one of the security officers looked at Adeyeye and said, “You insulted the vice-chancellor, now the VC has caught you.” We were called various names ranging from cult members to troublemakers. We were detained overnight and later taken to Sabo Police Station. The whole thing appeared premeditated in a way. Were any of you manhandled? Yes, one of us was manhandled. The police also collected Adeyeye’s phone to delete the photos he took showing how the security officer manhandled one of us. We were made to give an undertaking that we would not write any malicious article or leak the photos into public domain. I see that as an infringement on our human rights. How has the incident affected your going out with him especially to the UNILAG campus? It has not affected my relationship with him. I believe in Adeyeye and in what he is fighting for. Gbenro Adeoye and Jesusegun Alagbe Labour unions and workers on Friday criticised moves by the Federal Government to use part of the N5.8tn Contributory Pension Scheme assets in its bid to get the country out of economic recession. Rather than become desperate and dip its hands into the fund, they said the Federal Government should look for alternative means of resolving the current economic crisis. Ever since the country plunged into economic recession, the Federal Government had been seeking ways of addressing the situation, including its recent consideration of selling some of the country’s assets. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently said that with the fund rising to about N5.8tn, there would always be the temptation to tamper with it for needs such as infrastructural development, but he warned against succumbing to the urge. The factional President of the Nigeria Labour Congress and General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Joe Ajaero, said the Federal Government should not think of borrowing from the pension fund. He added that dipping hands into the savings of workers, even if it would pay back with interest, would amount to illegality on the part of the government. He said, “The fund is the workers’ money from joint contributions by them and their employers and it is in the workers’ dedicated accounts with the pension fund administrators. Now for anybody, whether the government or an individual, to take from that money for anything is illegal. “The fact that it is kept where it is does not mean that you should access it. I am saying, as a person, that the little money I have contributed so far, nobody has the right to take it for whatever reason and I think this is the position of almost all the workers. “And besides, the fund is insufficient; people hardly have enough to contribute; some people could not contribute up to N300,000 before they retired. Why must the Federal Government even think of borrowing from it? I think the owners of the fund will resist it. As an individual and a leader of the workers’ union, our money is not for borrowing by anybody; not even at any interest rate.” The President of the Trade Union Congress, Bobboi Bala Kaigama, said the Federal Government has no right whatsoever to use the pension fund, given the fact that it is not an “active” participant in it, adding that workers would resist any move by the government to use the money. He said, “I don’t know why the Federal Government is interested in the pension fund. The government is not an active participant in it, so why is it trying to be active now and why is it showing interest in the pension fund because since October last year, the Federal Government has not paid in a dime as its share of the pension scheme. “It is only the employees’ contribution that is being put in, so what right does the government have to take from it? We say no. Second, what kind of infrastructure does the government plan to build? Is it the type that will benefit the contributors by way of houses? If the government wants to use our money to build roads that cannot stand the test of time, we will not accept that.” The General-Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, said the only condition upon which the Federal Government could use part of the fund is to consult all stakeholders on the matter. “Anything outside the approved guidelines for the investment of pension fund will be unacceptable because to change those guidelines will require that you revert to the stakeholders, who include the workers and the employers, so that they can revisit the matter and come out with new guidelines. Until that is done, we think it is inappropriate for the government or whoever to start new directions for the utilisation of the pension fund,” he said. Using part of the pension fund is a “no-go area,” said the Secretary-General of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Mr. Alade Bashir. “It is the workers’ contribution; it is a ‘no-go area.’ It is not a fund that can be touched. It is the workers’ money, their sweat, their future and their life,” he added. The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union doesn’t trust the Federal Government in managing the pension fund well if it dips its hands into it. Kicking against the move, he said rather than jeopardise the workers’ future, the Federal Government should look for alternative ways of bailing the country out of the economic recession. He said, “We don’t believe in the Federal Government to manage our money. We don’t want them to touch it. They shouldn’t trade with it. We have learned several lessons in our previous dealings with the Federal Government on issues relating to money. We don’t want to start shouting at each other in the future. They cannot be trusted with our money. “Rather, they should look for alternative sources of getting funds to bail the country out of recession. By the way, we are working together with the Nigeria Labour Congress on suggesting ways through which the Federal Government can get the country out of this economic recession and very soon, we’re going to make a comprehensive report available.” The spokesperson for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Mr. Emmanuel Ojugbana, also said that rather than thinking of touching pensioners’ money, the Federal Government should be thinking of selling some jets in the Presidential Fleet and reducing the salaries and allowances of the National Assembly members. He said, “They should leave that money alone. Thinking of making the move is even ridiculous. They should not look for a quick fix to solve our problems. It’s not going to last. Instead of them thinking of touching the pensioners’ money, they should cut down the cost of governance. “They should sell some jets in the Presidential Fleet. The National Assembly members should also reduce their salaries and allowances. They should block every leakage of our resources. By the time they do all of these, there will be money to bail the country out of recession.”

Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the final decision to sell national assets will be taken by the Federal Executive Council, which essentially comprises the President, the Vice-President and the 36 ministers. Mohammed said calls by the National Economic Council − which comprises the 36 governors and the Vice-President – for the assets to be sold was of no consequence. The minister said this on Wednesday while fielding questions from State House correspondents at the end of FEC meeting presided by President Muhammadu Buhari. Mohammed was accompanied by the Minister of Water Resources, Sulaiman Adamu. He said, “The government is still working on the most comprehensive manner to lift the economy and the government will make its position known very soon. “What the government will do is to expand the economy, everything you have heard so far is just suggestion, until the government makes its position known, all these assets sale, assets leasing, whatever is being bandied about, they are nothing but speculations. “The government has yet to come out with its position on how to bail out the economy and it will take that position. “NEC will recommend but it is the Federal Executive Council that will decide and what we decide will be the position of the government.” Mohammed and Adamu disclosed that FEC approved three memos from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources. Mohammed said, “Water today, like no other time, has become one of the most important resources with economic, social and political implications. And the judicious use and allocation of water for human, animals, livestock and industry have become more than ever one of the serious issues facing humanity. “As a matter of fact, many countries have gone to war over the issue of water. So, I believe it is only timely that Nigeria is proactive and has considered the issue of water resources.” Also speaking, Adamu listed the three memos to include the National Water Policy, the National Irrigation Policy and a Draft National Water Resources Bill. He said, “The National Water Policy seeks to provide strategies that will improve the management and delivery of water in the country in particular reference to water supply. “It is followed by the enabling law, that is the National Water Resources Bill, which essentially consolidates all the existing laws, the Water Resources Act, the River Basin Development Authority Act, the National Water Resources Institute Act, the National Hydrological Services Act and other Acts put together to form a national law that conforms to international standard and international best practices. “By so doing, we have been able to streamline many of the overlapping laws. Sometimes, we have conflict in laws, like the one we have with NIWA, some laws relating to environment and mining. This bill seeks to sort out all those issues so that we have a standard national law, also so that we can set up a proper regulatory agency to regulate the water sector.” With the new development, he said the door was now open for the private sector to come in to invest in water supply schemes in the country. He said that the irrigation and drainage policy sought to recognise and bring in a water users’ association and generally improve not only irrigation infrastructure but irrigation management in the country. http://punchng.com/fec-not-govs-will-decide-sale-assets-fg/ |
