Science/Technology / Is The World Getting Any Better? by dtribunal: 5:26pm On Jun 25, 2018
(From the perspective of a geoscientist)

Today we live in a world where this question is asked in nearly all spheres of life, from religion, sciences, and what have you. The problem is, we see a changing world, to some for the better, to some for the worst and with the increase in knowledge it's even more of an uncertain answer to give.

Every activity carried out by human or by nature either increases the chance of a better world or decrease the probability of our planet surviving. It has been noted that human activity directly influences the responses of nature. Energy seems to be the driving force behind all physical activities taking place on our planet whether created or natural.

Why Energy is so important

Nature thrives on energy, from volcanic eruption, wind, rainfall, ocean currents, movements of seafloors, continental drifting etc.. These forces are essential for earth longevity. Humans also have developed energy In their capacity to carry out their activities. For instance, 80 per cent of the world's population lies in developing countries and their energy consumption is just about 40 per cent of the world total energy consumption. This simply means 60 per cent of the energy consumption comes from developed countries. It should be noted that the developing countries won't stay developing forever and therefore their energy demand would continually increase. Scary right? Nah not scary until you read the next line.

The more the energy consumption, the more the search for energy, and a continual non-stop process for exploiting and exploring energy sources. In fact to show how important energy is, the development of every country is measured by their energy consumption. With a rapid population growth and an increase in industrialization, where are we plunging into? renaissance? Or desolation?

Economic growth is great, yes I agree but "what is economic growth without sustainability?" In fact, the relationship between economic growth and increased energy demand is not always a straightforward linear concept. i.e In a certain country an increase in the gross domestic product would impose an increase in energy demand almost twice the percentage. In this context, the ratio of energy demand to GDP is somewhat of a useful indicator. High ratios support energy dependencies and a strong influence of energy on GDP growth. If this the case then how do developed countries survive this effect? (guess that's the question on your mind).. they focus on energy efficiency by making use of lower energy intensive routes, therefore, maintaining a balance in the energy to GDP ratios. But for developing and underdeveloped countries how do they manage? Truth be told their energy to GDP ratio is quite high and this is simply because they do not have the technology and effective policies to practice energy efficiency methods.

Energy sources such as fossil fuels have contributed a lot to the environment and not in a very positive light. And yet this the most used source of energy in developing countries who contribute about 80 per cent of the world's population. The usage of energy resources in industries leads to environmental damages by polluting the atmosphere from sulphur oxide, nitrous oxide, and carbon monoxide emissions from boilers and furnaces etc not to talk of chlorofluorocarbons emissions from refrigerants use. Continually, the health risks of this pollutant/pollution have been preached and as we can all see the consequences are before us every day. From acid rain, ozone depletion, climate change to carcinogenic diseases to mention a few.

The major cause of air pollution has been found to be related to high levels of smokes and Co2 arising from combustion of sulphur containing fossil fuels. With the presence of smogs in some countries which is due to the effect of black smoke, sulphate/acid aerosol.
More importantly, our climate is being damaged by cyclones, floods, storms, hurricanes, desertification, draughts which are all more intense and longer than it was before and this cannot just be explained as any random event. computer models have shown trends towards more powerful storms, hotter and drier periods.

Whats the hope for our planet? Is the world still getting better?

On just these note it is safe to say that world is not getting better, but a careful study of the information above and you would notice that there is a huge potential that the world is getting better, it is getting better and would get better, although that is just my opinion. I say this because of the increase in information and because the issue of energy efficiency has been raised. With a shift in attitude toward energy consumption from fossil fuel to cleaner and renewable energy, a sustainable and a greener future is sure. Some countries in Europe have recorded successes in adopting renewable energy and has enjoyed all its overwhelming benefits. Some developing countries have adopted energy security policies to meet the need of their growing population, for the now and the future. some strategies for meeting future challenges include energy demand restraint, development, diversification of energy supply sources, energy efficiency and sustainable development.

Why energy conservation is important

For efficient use of energy, energy conservation should be understood. Both concepts related and very prior. When the growth of energy consumption is reduced we say energy is being conserved..is energy conservation possible or futuristic? In my opinion that depends on what source of energy is conserved. But a more important tool that encapsulates me is the efficiency of energy and this is possible when energy intensity(energy usage) in a product, process or area of either production or consumption is reduced without affecting output, consumption or comfort levels...this sounds nice, right? This can be made possible in improving production processes and technology through research, technology and scientific development and it is very possible.

Looking at both concepts as a whole... energy conservation is very possible too. When energy is used more efficiently, yes! Energy can be conserved. And if energy is conserved, that is a sustainable approach.
Is the world getting better? Now it is up to you to answer that….for me, the world is waiting for you and every one of us to make it better. Think renewable, think sustainable and think green….our future depends on us...

Hi folks,

Wish I could tell you all I have been facing these past few years after graduation, but that would be a story for another day as I do not intend to wet your eyes with tears. Anyways, reading some testimonies here has really help me and created a paradigm shift in my thought process and also made me believe in anything is possible.

I am in real need of a job. am currently in Kaduna but can relocate to Lagos or Portharcourt or anywhere if any opportunity comes up.
I am a positive and enthusiastic Geology graduate( second class upper) who is passionate about administration, management, science,
and ICT. Over the years I have learned to constantly improve my attitude and sharpen my skills. I believe I am creative, result oriented, innovative and self-driven.

Don't seek to inform me about self development. Unlike the attackers, I know my purpose for being in school. I know that it's what you do with your time that matters.
But take a look at the OP and his subordinates. You think someone focused on self development would sit down to attack other people's chosen institutions, just because he realized that his is inadequate?
I'm inexperienced, but I've been in both public and private universities. Meanwhile, you guys stand outside and make assumptions out of baseless hate. So who really is the one making a 'presumptuous statement'?

See ure still presumptuous...
Can u tell for a certain that i haven't had the experience of both public and private universities??

Guy, everything depends on how u look at it...opinion at d end is all that matters to every individual.. Not truth..because no one knows what it is....lol

U defend what u believe others defend what they believe..at that point hate is not baseless..

Just take it easy...I noticed u made emphasis on the 'presumptuous statement"...just to point out the spelling error...lol...anyways thanks...it was a typographical mistake...

Have a nice time in school...and keep being "focused".

Wrong, answer is log3 cos that base is 10.

Log3 is the same as log103

True...
Thanks for the correction

Lol.
Have you read the comments. While we're giving acute responses, you guys start insulting the universities and their lecturers. And those are the kind of people you want me to learn from.
Maybe I'd have ignored the thread if you 'elders' had provided objective points, instead of throwing shades at private university students.

Lol this guy!!!...

Even in senate meetings and most prolific scientific communities "shades are being thrown"...so that's not an excuse...if ur goal is to take salient points...good for u...but if it is to make presumptions statements obviously out of INEXPERIENCE good for u too..

Right now ur primary focus should be about self development and education not the school... and don't come here and give flawed statements about schools.... U hear me..FRESHER!!!
Education / Re: mathematicians solve this questions am confused about the answer pls help by dtribunal: 2:23pm On Jan 01, 2018
onihaxxy:
Answer should be log3.

Log3^2 - log3 =

2(log3) - log3

It's just like saying 2x - x which equals x.

Same way, 2log3 - log3 = log3

If the base is 3,

Log3 to base 3 equals 1.

Nah its like saying...x^2 - x.....but because of its base and an inclusion of a logarithm function, the laws of logarithm should simply be applied...

Making the equation

2x/x..... = 2....
Put x= log3...
Education / Re: mathematicians solve this questions am confused about the answer pls help by dtribunal: 2:13pm On Jan 01, 2018
Log3^2 - log3

2log3 - log3

2log3/log3

=2

Oh Lawd! This makes me wish I had chosen Uniport. I don't even know why.

This guy nah in u dey make mouth...u just gain admission recently...

So if u rejected uniport admission in 2016 or 2017 that means u should be in 100level or 200level..
Baba better face ur studies and stop saying bullshit..this debate is not for u..

You have earned no right in this debate...read comments and learn..
Education / Re: 5 Reasons You Shouldn't Attend A Private University by dtribunal: 11:54am On Dec 31, 2017
I had admission into FUTO. I rejected it and did an A Level programme in Uniport, then gained 200 level admission into Mechanical engineering. I still rejected it and went private.
And most private universities release their admission lists before public universities. By the time the public universities are admitting students, their counterparts in private universities would have even matriculated or started exams. So what are you saying?
Most of you don't even know what you're saying. You believe everything people tell you......BY DRAZEY

Plz which uniport A level programme gives u admission directly into 200 level...I schooled there never heard of such...did it start 2017...baba tell me because I still have a younger brother looking for such opportunity.

Education is different from schooling...curriculums are devised to guide and also restrict us...it doesn't matter where u get schooled... But it does matter how u get educated because education is driven by our own effort, our zeal and determination to learn.

All the shege our lecturers show us for public university ehhh....anyways it helped us forge our own path...

I've seen some really smart private university graduates..
But I still rep my public school!!!...private university dudes won't understand!!...lol

Science/Technology / 12 Lessons I Acquired From 2017 by dtribunal: 11:42am On Dec 13, 2017
Hey folks, the past 12 months have been a propulsion to self realization, maybe coz am far from home?! (Lol)..Lessons have been learnt and today I felt like sharing them with you guys...
My top lesson of 2017(*winks*)

1. Our lives are meaningful only if we believe it is. If you don't feel that way it is entirely your fault.

2. Life is not just a game but packs of games. Find the game you want to play, learn the rules and find a way to be successful at it (be specific).

3.Everything ends. Youth, love, life itself. And that's what makes them valuable..use the best of/from them. Don't set boundaries, don't limit yourself.!

4. Figure out a way or don't complain

5. Be a realist about the big things. Have a plan, have an artistic ambition but always have an engineers mindset...life is an open field for pragmatism!!!

6. Opinions don't define your reality...it's only assumptions/suggestions or an unclear fact. The opinion that matters most about yourself is YOURS!

7. Things always get better with time. RELAX!!

8. Everyone's journey's different...focus on yours!

9. There is nothing like failure!! You only fail when you quit!...

10. Smile, love, show some kindness. What goes around comes around...

11. Positive thoughts creates positive things...your thought process is optional!!! Develop your mind!!

12. If you focus on results changes would hardly come. Focus on change! Results would follow..( that is the ultimate principle of nature).

Remember everything is OK at the end, if it is not OK...then it is not the end. Be humble! We are only but cosmic dust privileged to have evolved through time...

Science/Technology / The Lessons I Learnt From Alfred Wegner by dtribunal: 6:27am On Oct 07, 2017
As a scientist, i have learnt to overcome my fears with my rational thought process, dedication to work, patience and perseverance..i didnt just discover this, an intelligent man i wish i met taught me this.....
Ever since maps of the Atlantic Ocean were first published in the mid-sixteenth century, scholars have pondered on the remarkable jigsaw fit between the ocean’s opposing coastline(i.e the puzzle like fitting between continents even if they were far apart). The German meteorologist Alfred Wegener was brave enough to propose the hypothesis of continental drift. According to this hypothesis, the fit of the coastlines was no coincidence.

Wegener proposed that the continents of Europe, Africa, and the Americas were once joined together and had subsequently broken up and moved great distances apart. In-fact he meant that the continents where still moving further apart, and this movement was due to heat from the earth interior...this means the earth is moving and our continent is still moving...funny right?

This was total bullshit, Wegner wasnt even a geologist/geophysicist...how can this be? even if Wegner wanted to prove this using coastline, coastlines at that time and up-till now were known to be ephemeral features of Earth’s surface that could be changed by a single storm. How could their shape have any meaning after millions of years of coastal erosion. In fact, the best fit between the Atlantic continents has since been shown by computer analysis to be a lie, not at their coastlines, but along lines drawn halfway down their continental slopes at a depth of 1000 meters (3300 feet) below sea level.
Unlike coastlines, which mark only the edge of the land, the continental slopes, which separate areas of land and shallow seas from the deep ocean basins, mark the edge of the continents themselves and so are far more enduring features of Earth’s surface. But the ocean floors had not been mapped in Wegener’s day, so he had no way of knowing the shape of the continental slopes.....WEGNER WAS ENTIRELY CRAZY....!!!!!!!!!!......in one of the meetings held in London Wegner failed drastically to convince his scientific audience on this jigsaw-fit theory!!!(such a shame).. what even helped him was his already established reputation in the scientific community infact a professor of paleontology at Johns Hopkins University said that Wegener’s method were not scientific, but takes the familiar course of an initial idea, a selective search through the literature for corroborative evidence. This was the height of insults for someone as renowned as Wegner! This didnt break Wegner but rather made him stronger!!! wegner spent his life proving to the world his THEORY OF CONTINENTAL DRIFT!! A new Galileo and Copernicius was born!!....Today the theory of continental drift explains about 75% of earth features, it is the most important theory in earthsciences, the backbone of Geosciences....from exploration to environmental engineering the importance of this theory can not be overemphasized!!! Wegner has shown us the light through his dedication and perseverance!!!!!
ALWAYS REMEMBER!!......dont give up, even if u are regarded as stupid and must have lost reputation..just live, work-hard, learn, improve and u'll prove everyone wrong!!
