5. Interaction with elderly people is just too formal
Nigerians show the much older people respect by being formal with them. For instance: calling your friend’s parents as Mr and Mrs Lagbaja. Nigerians are raised with the mentality to be formal and respectful to the elders.
With the blend of the western culture and our culture, this is not the case. Nowadays, the young generation show respect to elderly people based on their experience and affluence. They believe age is not equal to respect.

4. Bizarre greeting methods
People abroad think our greeting methods and habits are bizarre.
Our greeting methods are part of our culture and that is why we stick to it. Our greeting styles (Ladies kneel down while Men prostrate on the floor) are part of our heritage, a sign of respect, it is who we are and we are proud of it.

3. They think Nigerian Languages sound weird
Nigerian languages are sweet and if you don’t understand it, you are missing. Many foreigners spend money to study our languages in Universities abroad. (You think say e easy?)

2. Yikes! They cook with Red Oil!
Foreigners believe we cook most of our meals with red oil (Palm oil). I met Cheng in China Town, Ojota and he expressed how he felt about eating food made with red oil. He said, “even though it was dreadful for me the first time I ate Egusi soup made with palm oil, I will never forget the delicious taste and aroma; now I eat Naija soups like a Nigerian”.

If you haven’t tasted soups or moi moi made with palm oil, cooked beans made with palm oil, you are seriously missing. These meals are utterly delicious!

1. Foreigners think Nigerians are noisy and loud.
Like seriously? I don’t believe Nigerians are loud and noisy; we are quiet and reserved people. If we sound loud or speak in high pitched voices, it means we are either having fun or you just stepped on our toes. Nevertheless, we love life and always want to have a good time.

Most foreigners have misconceptions about Nigerians because they really do not understand how great we are. Being a Nigerian, I was curious about our general eccentricities and I decided to find out things foreigners find odd about us. Some of the answers I got are overwhelming and pretty hilarious.

Here are 10 things people abroad find odd about Nigerians:

Hi everyone, this matter has been one that have been giving sleepless night for over seven days now and I beg you to help me with it...
I have been dating her for over 2 years and some months now, my relationship with her is great, just few ups and downs. But there is one flaw in our relationship, I barely spend much time with her because I am a dependent, student, loner and to top it all, an Introvert (as people do tell me)
Her birthday is on the 5th of december, she told me she want to celebrate it, knowing that I can't afford even the cake, I told her not to hold the apart again because it shouldn't be our priority now (that's my excuse).
She got angry over it and I pretend not to care too. The next day she come back to me and say she won't hold it anymore. So she begged me that she did not want anything from me on her birthday, but all she want is for me to take her out.
I have never done that before, with her with anyone but I agreed anyway.
She was very happy, I can see it in her, she told all of her friends about it, she just can't stop talking about it anytime I'm around her.
I plan to take some money out of the sum my dad gave me to send to my sister (who is also a student) for project. She asked me to keep it for her till December ending so that she won't spend it. Knowing that I'm going to get back the money, I just keep assuring her of the promise I made.
Here is the problem, my sister called me lately that deadline for the project is now November ending. She begged me to send it and she is serious about it. My sister trusts me so much. Now I don't know how to tell my girlfriend that I can't keep the promise again.

I respect myself so much, of course I can't risk my sister's education over a promise to my girlfriend but I don't know how to tell her that.
Please help a brother, thanks.
Nairaland General10 Reasons To Avoid Drinking Sodas (soft Drink) by DY20(op):
The average Nigerian drinks approximately 56 GALLONS of soda a year. Some people even admit to drinking more soda than water each day, or no water at all. Soft drinks are a multi-billion naira product, and they account for a quarter of all drinks consumed in Nigeria. With Nigerians consuming this large amount of soft drinks each year, it becomes important to evaluate how soft drinks can influence a person’s health. With a little research, it becomes clear that even moderate consumption of soda can be dangerous.
DISCLAIMER: This thread is not to spoil anyone's business. Consumers have the right to give healthily opinion on any product they use. This is wellness.
Ten Reasons to Avoid Soft Drink
Consumption:

1. A single can of soda contains the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar. This amount of sugar, especially in liquid form, skyrockets the blood sugar and causes an insulin reaction in the body. Over time, this can lead to diabetes or insulin resistance, not to mention weight gain and other health problems. Soft drink companies are the largest user of sugar in the country.
2. Soda contains phosphoric acid, which
interferes with the body’s ability to absorb
calcium and can lead to osteoporosis, cavities and bone softening. Phosphoric
Acid also interacts with stomach acid,
slowing digestion and blocking nutrient
absorption.
3. In diet sodas, aspartame is used as a
substitute for sugar, and can actually be
more harmful. It has been linked to almost a hundred different health problems including seizures, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, diabetes, and emotional disorders. It converts to methanol at warm temperatures and methanol breaks down to formaldehyde and formic acid. Diet sodas also increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, which causes belly fat, high blood sugar and raised cholesterol.
4. Most sodas contain caffeine, which has been linked to certain cancers, breast lumps, irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, and other problems.
5. The water used in soda is just simple tap
water and can contain chemicals like
chlorine, fluoride and traces of heavy metals.
6. Harvard researchers have recently positively linked soft drinks to obesity. The study found that 12 year olds who drank soda were more likely to be obese than those who didn’t, and for each serving of soda consumed daily, the risk of obesity
increased 1.6 times.
7. Sodas contain High Fructose Corn Syrup,
which obviously comes from corn. Most of
this corn has been genetically modified, and there are no long term studies showing the safety of genetically modified crops, as genetic modification of crops has only been around since the 1990s. Also, the process of making High Fructose Corn Syrup involves traces of mercury, which causes a variety of long term health problems.
8. There is absolutely no nutritional value in soda whatsoever. Not only are there many harmful effects of soda, but there are not even any positive benefits to outweigh them. Soda is an unnatural substance that harms the body.
9. Because of the high sugar, sodium and
caffeine content in soda, it dehydrates the
body and over a long period of time can
cause chronic dehydration.
10. Drinking soda regularly causes plaque to build up on the teeth and can lead to cavities and gum disease.
Nairaland GeneralHow I Feel As A Muslim After The Attacks In Paris. by DY20(op): 3:17pm On Nov 18, 2015
My name Kareem Quamdeen Adedayo, I am a muslim and I am not a terrorist.
I woke up to the breaking news in Paris.
Instinctively, I feel pity for the lives lost.
It seems that Muslims just cannot get out
of the spotlight. This spotlight is created by
insane deranged idiots.
We just cannot get a break.
Every time there’s an event, all fingers
point at every single Muslim.
Why should every single Muslim shoulder
the blame for terrorist attacks. You hear
the media saying that Muslims are not
doing enough to denounce the “others”.
What’s even more disappointing for me is
that my friends who know me (or at least I
think they know me) question me and my
stances.
I’ve read their comments, I’ve even
received crude inbox messages and it made me wonder, did you always hate all
Muslims or did you always feel this way
about my faith and about me?
ANY ACT OF TERROR = MUSLIM = ISLAM
Do I need to walk around with an “I-
Condemn” sign 24/7 for you to realise I am
totally against terrorism, terror groups or
any acts of terror?
Should I be screaming “Not in my name”,
every time an idiot screams “Allahu Akbar”
before detonating?
Why should I apologise on any platform
for ISIS?
I do not agree with ISIS, I do not support
them, I am not responsible for them, nor
am I responsible for their formation in the
Middle East and I think I can speak for
myself and the 1.6 billion Muslims out
there.
The majority of Muslims condemn the loss
of innocent lives and bombing of civilians,
and speak out against Islamic extremism in any other country.
We have never denied that certain autocratic governments in the Middle East
are cruel and oppressive. They are denying
rights which were given to women 1400
years ago, yet there are Muslim countries,
who are very progressive and who have
women at the forefront of politics, etc.
The majority of Muslims condemn racism,
bigotry, anti-Semitism, islamophobia and
the list goes on.
Islam has been hijacked by “groups”
who reportedly say that they are
Muslims, yet they do not adhere to the
core essentials of Islam: mercy,
compassion, respect for all irrespective
of their race or religion, patience, good
manners, etc.”
Who is ISIS really?
10 years ago, when someone said ISIS, you
would have thought it was an Ancient
Greek or Egyptian religion.
But where did ISIS originate? It seems that
their information was the result of the US
led invasion of Iraq in Middle East. But no
one appointed them into speaking for the
rest of us (Muslims).
The 99% of normal Muslims, such as
myself, go about our daily lives, as we work, educate our children and make a positive contribution to our communities. We don’t want these merciless, heartless people representing us in any way or form.
They are misinterpreting everything in the
Islamic religion. They are using verses out
of the Quran to brainwash young adults
(note: ISIS doesn’t recruit people over 30).
It’s already crazy that many non-Muslims
take a verse out of context to justify their
hatred for Islams and Muslims.
Anything read, such as the holy book, can
be open to interpretation.
Religion really has very little to do with the
actions of their people, it's their culture
they come out of. Every religion has some
form of violence linked to it from
Christianity to Judaism to Islam. However
and most importantly every faith is rooted
in the soil in which it is planted.
If you are already a misogynist, the verses
will speak to that part of you. If you are a
power hungry maniac, you will take the
verse in mold it into you taking over the
world, and you will use the verse to justify
it. I could read the very same verse, the
power part could be speaking to my inner
strength, the power to change by exuding
positivity. The ones who commit these
heinous crimes are reading the very same
verses through the blinkers of their own
cultural, ethnic, and power perspectives.
I am born Muslim, I read the very same
verses and you don’t see me putting on a
vest or one day picking up a weapon to
convert every non-believer to my faith.
When I read the Quran, it helps me fight
my own Jihad, which is not a holy war, but
my own internal battles.
Paradise is not promised to me or these
groups who think they are the chosen
ones. And how can killing innocent people
justify your ticket to paradise? You have to
be totally insane to believe this.
The blood of the innocent is on the hands
of those who helped and those who have
helped give birth to these mad men.
ISIS wants to take over the world.
Muslims are also under threat, but we are
also targets.
Statistics show they are mass killing
Muslims, because they refuse to
acknowledge ISIS or join their group, if you
do not imbibe and accept their philosophies, you will be killed. This alone
should tell some bigoted people who slap
stereotypes on everything that even I am
under threat.
Why are Muslims frustrated?
We are all painted with the same ‘terrorism’ brush. We are monitored at airports with suspicion, railway platforms are death traps and on social media platforms we are ALL labelled terrorists.
Women are targeted for wearing hijab and
women are killed by ISIS for not wearing
hijab. Many peace-loving Muslims pay the
price for these 1% nutters.
Do you think majority of the Muslims want
this sort of life for their children and
grandchildren or themselves? The entire
world needs to rediscover our humanity.
We all need to join together to fight any
form of terrorism, oppression, and
injustice, so that we can live peacefully and respectfully on this planet. I don’t expect that I can cure everyone of their ignorance.
All I say is stop drawing parallels between
these nutters and the rest of the Muslim.
It’s about time that people understand the
difference between religion and culture.
