We just received this piece of news, amidst the increasing hunger in the land. An internal memo which we got hold of suggests that the government of Imo State, has increased the tuition fees of Imo State University students by more than 100%

Internal Memo:

“Please be informed that the University Council has approved the payment of the under-listed category of tuition fee by students of Imo State University who are not of Imo State Origin, thus:

Faculty of Medicine = N190,000,00
Faculty of Law = N180,000,00
Faculty of Engineering = N180,000,00
Other Faculties = N150,000,00

The payment of these fees is with effect from the current 2015/2016 Academic Session.

By a copy of this memo, the University bursar is to take necessary action to ensure strict compliance with this directives of the University Council.

Governor Rochas Okorocha on his 2016 Democracy Day broadcast monitored through Radio Nigeria programme, tagged Radio Link, has emphasised that the new payment regime at Imo State University and Imo State Polytechnics, takes effect this month, urging all parents and guardians to ensure compliance.

While, Imo State University academic and non-cademic Staff are on indefinite strike for none payment of Salaries and arrears of the University lecturers and workers. Academic activities have grounded to a halt for 3 months now and counting. …

You could recall, that the Tuition fee of Imo State University students both Indigenes and Non-indigenes as inherited by the Okorocha led administration in 2011 was pegged at N35,000,00(thirty Five Thousand Naira). Same period under previous administration, acceptance fee was N20,000 and under Okorocha’s free education, acceptance is pegged at N70,000.

Phones › The New Whatsapp Gold: Reasons You Shouldn’t Upgrade So Soon by eazydon(op): 7:33pm On May 23, 2016
If you see an exclusive invitation to WhatsApp Gold, don’t be too fast to hit on the download.

The upgrade, which is allegedly used by celebs, claims to offer new features such as the ability to have video chats, send 100 pictures at once and, tantalisingly, the ability to delete messages after you have sent them.

People have been sent a link offering to install a new version of the messaging app, but don’t be fooled.

The download actually leads to malware, which could infect your phone allowing hackers to spy on your details.

https://trend.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/wg-631x420.jpg

Users receive a message that says: ‘Hey Finally Secret Whatsapp golden version has been leaked, This version is used only by big celebrities. Now we can use it too’.

But the exclusive upgrade does not actually exist, and what you’ll actually be downloading is software which could open your phone up to hackers.

So far, it has mainly infected Android devices. Those who have downloaded it are advised to install antivirus software and only install apps via the Google Play Store in future.

If you see an ‘invite’, delete the message.

Politics › The National Grazing Reserve Council Bill Explained (read) by eazydon(op):
THE GRAZING BILL HIGHLIGHT
I decided to read a copy of the National Grazing Reserve Council Bill and I was surprised at what I saw.

The Bill creates a council to be chaired by a Chairman to be appointed by the president.

The council shall have the power to take your land anywhere the land is located in the country and then pay you compensation.

Your land, when taken, shall be assigned to herdsmen who shall use your land for grazing purposes. They shall bring cows to the land and you shall lose the land permanently to those Fulani cattlemen.
If you feel that the council was not right to take your land, you can go to court but before you go to court, you must first of all notify the federal attorney general of your intention to sue the council. Apart from notifying, you must get the consent and authority of the Federal Attorney General before you can sue.

So that means that if the Attorney General refuses to give his consent to the suit, you have lost your land forever to the herdsmen.

And this law, when passed, shall apply to the whole country so it means that your land in the village or anywhere is not safe.

The National Grazing Reserve Council would have the power to take away your land from you anytime they want and pay you whatever they want as compensation (even when you don't want to sell, and remember that for you to get compensation, you must have documents showing or proving ownership).

So I think that we all in the South West, South South and South East must rise up and reject this Bill. We must do all things to force our national Assembly members from passing that bill into law.

That bill is a deliberate attempt to take our lands and hand the land over to the Fulani cattlemen since it is only the fulanis that rear cattle in Nigeria.
That law, when passed, shall fulfil the directive of Uthman Dan Fodio and other northern leaders to take over other parts of Nigeria.

I implore you to use all available means to implore your senator and Rep not to pass that law.

That law will destroy Nigeria.
All over the world, ranches are established and used to rear cattle. The farmers buy land and put there cattle there. There is no country where the land of the citizens are compulsorily acquired and given to others.

This is evil, and designed to favour the Fulanis where the president comes from.
We must resist the passage of that bill into law to save Nigeria, and to protect our future generations.

Politics › Opinion: 15 Reasons Why I Am Convinced Buhari Collected $300,000 From Dasuki by eazydon(op): 12:07pm On Dec 23, 2015
#BuhariGate: 15 Reasons Why I Am Convinced Buhari Collected $300,000 From Dasuki (MUST READ):- By Ena Ofugara

Oh, yes! Oh, yes! I am convinced that Muhammadu Buhari indeed collected $300,000 (and even more from the former National Security Advisor (NSA), Sambo Dasuki. Despite denials from the Presidency, everything points to Buhari receiving the cash gift from Dasuki.

1. Everything Dasuki has said has been basically true. Dokpesi did not deny collecting money to perform the service he did.

2. Everything Buhari rejects makes the papers. If Buhari rejects anything like a Rolls Royce ride, it is good propaganda. What better propaganda than “Buhari rejects 300 thousand dollars bribe. Says “go and buy weapons with it” to Jonathan”?

3. He did not tell Nigerians he was given bulletproof cars. The press tried to hide it. Google now and you will see how when we said it then, they said Buhari refused it.

4. So you take the cars and reject the cash? You take the meat and throw away the soup? Does that make sense?
5. And it did not make the press.

6. Dasuki has repeatedly said he supported Buhari, not “voted” but “supported”. So, how did Dasuki support Buhari?

7. If it was possible to deny the cars, would Buhari not have denied them? Is cash not deniable unlike cars?

8. Is this Buhari who accepted moneys from Sylva who was facing EFCC charges, if that type of man… accused thief can be the one to OFFICIALLY PRESENT Buhari’s nomination form, and then he SYLVA said HE BOUGHT THE FORMS FOR BUHARI. Till date Buhari has not countered this disturbing claim. Is that the type of man that will refuse $300,000 from his Fulani brother?

9. The Rivers State jet that became Buhari’s personal air taxi, is that not Amaechi DIVERTING RIVERS PROPERTY for other use? When Rivers state bought the plane, was it to ferry a presidential aspirant for a year and a half?

10. The “80 percent of APC money was from Amaechi” that APC officially said before all of Nigeria. What business does Amaechi run that he would have 80% of APC’s multi-trillion naira campaign to contribute? What is his line of business. Now, if Buhari can collect Amaechi’s sorry River’s state money and aeroplane, why do you think he will refuse $300,000 from Dasuki?

11. And he refused money and it did not become front page of Sahara Reporters?

12. Buhari that never attended State Council meeting under Jonathan can collect SUV and bulletproof car. What can he not collect?

13. Dasuki gave Buhari a car. He must have called Buhari and Buhari knows it is not Dasuki that pays him his monthly remunerations. So why did he take the cars and MONEY from Dasuki?

14. Again, I believe Dasuki did the right thing to get Buhari an armoured car and another for maybe his security. This is all part of the work of security votes and the leverage allowed the NSA to do what he feels will bring peace to Nigeria, including paying some people inexplicable money to share in inexplicable places so some people do not bomb, kill or burn. IT IS WHY EVEN NOW THE PRESIDENT AND STATE GOVERNORS CONTINUE TO HAVE IT AND SPEND IT AS THEY DEEM FIT. Policy decisions are not questioned. This public probe of the NSA is foolishness foolishness foolishness. Will Obama and his spending in the Middle East on ISIS and media including the Aljazeera and other propaganda etc. The US guns ISIS is holding, you think Obama or his the CIA or his SECRETARY OF STATE will be probed someday? You think you will have this public circus of an American security chief on how he spent money?

15. I dare Buhari to probe all security votes of all states APC states and let us see how many times his own name will come up for receiving one thing or another.

SECURITY VOTE IS SECURITY VOTE. It has never been questioned, it should never be. If we want to end it, then let them end it. As long as it exists, it will always be a president or his assigns war chest to ensure peace and all such matters INCLUDING PROPAGANDA.

Ena Ofugara studied law in the University of Benin for some years before leaving Nigeria for the United States where he is studying while working. He has a passion for Nigeria. He has a clear bias for his people of the Niger Delta and he believes the Nigerian system – justice, social, economic – is rigged against his people. So he became a social and political commentator to highlight this injustice.

Politics › Abia Government Pays December Salary To Workers by eazydon(op): 9:55am On Dec 23, 2015
GOVERNMENT SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

ABIA STATE GOVERNMENT PAYS DECEMBER 2015 SALARIES OF CIVIL SERVANTS IN THE STATE

In fulfillment of the pledge of the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu that all Civil Servants in the State will receive their December 2015 salaries before the Christmas festivities, the Abia State Government has transferred the December 2015 Salaries of all Ministries, Departments and Agencies in Abia State to their respective paying banks for onward disbursement to the workers that bank with them.

Disclosing this during a chat with Newsmen at his office in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Obinna Oriaku noted that the Abia State Ministry of Finance has given a directive to all the banks to ensure that all the workers receive their salaries latest by Wednesday, December 23, 2015.

As for Local Government Workers, he gave the assurance that as soon as the Joint Accounts Allocation Committee (JAAC) Meeting for the month is held within the week, all workers who are usually paid from Local Government Allocations will receive their December Salaries.

Mr. Oriaku also disclosed that all the contractors handling road projects in Abia State have received massive payments to ensure that they increase the tempo of their construction works to enable appreciable progress to be made during this dry season.

In the same vein, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has approved the release of funds to Transition Committee Chairmen of all the Local Governments in the State to enable them grade key rural roads in their areas to ease anticipated heavy vehicular movement during the yuletide.

Mr. Oriaku disclosed the determination of his office to deliver on Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s instruction to prudently and creatively manage the funds available to Abia State while taking steps to increase the Internally Generated Revenue of the State to augment the dwindling allocations from the Federal Allocations occasioned by low oil prices and other macro-economic factors.

Politics › “PDP Left Nigeria In A Much Better State Than It Met It” – Soludo by eazydon(op): 12:34pm On Dec 21, 2015
Every team serious about ‘change’ starts with a clear identification of the baseline from which it measures deviations/progress.

Nigeria has had 16 uninterrupted years of democracy with the PDP controlling the federal government as well as majority of the states. APC is now in charge at both the centre and majority of the states. A minimum standard for measuring ‘change’ is the extent to which APC government beats the record of the PDP in measurable terms. As the saying goes, if you can’t measure it, you can’t improve/change it!

Government must strengthen the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and preserve its independence to produce and publish credible national statistics. It needs serious funding. I really wish our policymakers can be a little less careless or casual about the use of official statistics. I criticised the last government for relying on ‘estimates’ by World Bank staff instead of the NBS statistics.

When I hear the narrative so far in the media by the new government regarding the economy, I take it largely as the kind of ‘usual propaganda’ new officials deploy to show that their predecessors “did nothing” and therefore lay the ground for claiming that they are “doing everything for the first time in our history”. Fortunately also, there are many people as well taking a hard look at the numbers and recording scores.

At AfriHeritage, we are developing a template for measuring government performance. As Nigeria has largely evolved into a two party state in a democracy, I prefer to frame the discourse on the baseline as ‘PDP’s legacy and the APC’s challenge’!

Since it is the practice to blame the PDP for every ill that befell our country in the last 16 years (and there are many of them) it is also fair to credit them with the positive ones.

According to data from NBS, one outstanding legacy of the PDP is that in 16 years it held sway, it more than doubled the GDP of Nigeria (indeed with average year-on-year GDP growth rate in excess of 6% over the past 12 years, the GDP actually doubled within the last 12 years. It met average annual growth rate of about 2% and raised it to 6-7%, led by the non-oil sector. Yes, non-oil sector, and the “diversification” reported in the recently re-based GDP happened within the last 16 years.

Will the economy more than double in the next 12 years under the APC? For me, if only the APC can double the size of GDP from about $550 billion to $1.1 trillion in 12 -16 years, and further half the poverty index, Nigeria will indeed be on course to be one of the largest 10 economies in the world by the end of this century.

As at 1999 when PDP came to power, Nigeria was largely a pariah state still lucky to have survived as one indivisible sovereign, especially in the context of the struggle by NADECO and restiveness in many parts of the country.

On corruption, Transparency International scored it 1.6 out of 10 and ranked 98 out of 99 countries in 1999. Nigeria was listed among four countries that were non-compliant on the anti-money laundering rules by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). We could not service our external debt and relied on stressful rescheduling, with all the intrusive donor conditionalities. Poverty was estimated at 70%, and unemployment at nearly 20%.

The 1990s will go down in our economic history as the decade of stagnation: when per capita income growth was zero. Average oil price in May 1999 when President Obasanjo took over was $15.24 while stock of reserves was about $5 billion.

After 16 years, several challenges remain and some have even worsened (especially insecurity).

Although President Jonathan’s regime had the worst economic management relative to the resources at its disposal, it must be stressed that tremendous progress was made in the aggregate 16 years of PDP government. Yes, it should have left more than $100 billion in reserves but left only $30 billion (still about six times of what it met).

We also wish that Jonathan’s team did not leave Nigeria with unprecedented rate of debt accumulation.

But, according to statistics from NBS, the PDP handed over a $550 billion economy (largest in Africa and 26th in the world), with 7.5% unemployment rate (better than European Union, France, Sweden, Belgium, etc although the underemployment figure is much higher); 32%?? poverty rate (as claimed by the former Finance Minister, or 61%??: NBS needs to clarify this claim); a stock of reserves of $30 billion; GDP growth rate averaging 6% over last 12 years; a relatively more diversified economy, with ICT penetration from 0.2% to over 60%, and a new contributory pension scheme now with trillions of Naira in pension fund. Our external debt is down although total debt stock is escalating. Our Gini coefficient (degree of inequality) is not different from China’s.

Nigeria has consolidated and stronger banking system that currently finances both government debt and the private sector, with a relatively vibrant capital market. The capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange grew from less than N1 trillion to N12 trillion as at handover. For the first time, Nigerian economy is now rated by credit rating agencies (Fitch, and Standard and Poor’s). Even on corruption perception, Nigeria is far better today than in 1999, and PDP created the two major anti-corruption agencies— ICPC and EFCC, and as at 2014 TI scored Nigeria 2.7 and ranked 136 out of 175 countries.

PDP secured debt relief for Nigeria, thereby relieving Nigeria from the stranglehold of the IMF/World Bank policy conditionalities. APC does not have to negotiate with Washington on many economic policies. The list is long.
The point therefore is that despite the fall in oil price, APC is starting from a much stronger base than PDP did in 1999 and the challenge now is to do far better. In the coming years, Nigerians will be asking APC to show us their figures!
