This is true to a great extent in Hausa culture, especially daughters of powerful women even if the farther is alive. But so long it's the mother whoa seen to make decisions and bring up the girl, many elders would discourage that marriage simply because the would inevitably be arrogant taking cue from her mum's independence. |

annunaki2: He couldn't order people to stop slave trade over night but he could order people to forcefully change their religion over night Don't you feel stoopid when you come up with all this daft excuses to defend Islam? Lol again that's your myopic view that even sees western historians as "dodgy Muslim apologists" It's a waste of time debating you because you don't agree with facts. Fact as obvious as verses that discouraged slavery. So I wouldn't delve into the issue of conversions to Islam. I told you times without number that because you hold such horrible Islamophobic view devoid of facts and sincerity doesn't stop other people from the west in particular from discovering the amazing virtues enshrined in Islam, which makes them convert in drove. It's up to you to chose what you do with your life. This conversation is over. |

When western Christians championed and saw to the abolishment of slave trade globally your Arab Muslim lords were still enslaving abeeds like you. It's obvious those Muslims that held on to slavery were doing it out of their selfish reasons not what Islam encouraged, just like the Christian west championed the abolishing for their strategic economic gain not really out of compassion. |

annunaki2: What you gave was the opinions of dodgy Muslim apologists and not a single verse from the quoran asking Muslims to free their slaves. The question remains, why enslave people in the first place? Why did islam's best example capture and trade in slaves? Why did Allah permit islam's best example and his cohorts to rape female slaves? Dude it was 650AD you can't order people to change over night. It takes time and it's done in stages which was what Islam encouraged as in the verses 2:177, 4:92, 5:89 etc all talked about freeing slaves can you honestly not see that? Islam is the second best thing to happen towards abolishment of slavery until it finally happened few centuries ago. That's more 1000 years. What Islam could do it has done which was to look at slaves as human beings with basic human rights and encourage they be freed whenever it's feasible. Am done talking to you, I have made more than enough points and my conscience is clear. Am outta here. |

Experts from Wikipedia There are many common features between the institution of slavery in the Quran and that of neighboring cultures. However, the Quranic institution had some unique new features. [20] Bernard Lewis states that the Qur'anic legislation brought two major changes to ancient slavery which were to have far-reaching effects: presumption of freedom, and the ban on the enslavement of free persons except in strictly defined circumstances. [33] According to Brockopp, the idea of using alms for the manumission of slaves appears to be unique to the Quran, assuming the traditional interpretation of verses [ Quran 2:177 ] and [ Quran 9:60 ] . Similarly, the practice of freeing slaves in atonement for certain sins appears to be introduced by the Quran (but compare Exod 21:26-7). [20] The forced prostitution of female slaves, a Near Eastern custom of great antiquity, is condemned in the Quran. [22][41] Murray Gordon notes that this ban is "of no small significance." [42] Brockopp writes: "Other cultures limit a master's right to harm a slave but few exhort masters to treat their slaves kindly, and the placement of slaves in the same category as other weak members of society who deserve protection is unknown outside the Qur'an. The unique contribution of the Qur'an, then, is to be found in its emphasis on the place of slaves in society and society's responsibility toward the slave, perhaps the most progressive legislation on slavery in its time." [20] Bernard Lewis, FBA (born 31 May 1916) is a British American historian specializing in oriental studies . He is also known as a public intellectual and political commentator . Lewis is the Cleveland E. Dodge Professor Emeritus of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. Lewis' expertise is in the history of Islam and the interaction between Islam and the West. He is also noted in academic circles for his works on the history of the Ottoman Empire . These are commentaries on Slavery in Islam by renowned historians FROM NON-MUSLIM perspective who are diligent and unbiased to digest this particular. Then who are you two unknown who don't know anything to paint a gory image in your imaginations and arrogantly dish it out shamelessly. A word of advice, research on topics well before you make up an opinion, or worst post it on public domain. cc true2god annunaki2 |

annunaki2: I challenge you to quote one single verse in the quoran that discouraged slavery or encouraged emancipation of slaves. Also explain to us why mohammed encouraged his companions to rape their slaves? true2god: Sunnah ibn majjah vol. 3, book 12, is all about business transactions in Islam. And among the business transactions Mohammed engaged was the buying of slaves, among which is safiya, whom Mohammed bought from Dhiya in exchange for seven slaves (in hadith number 2272). The main reason he bought safiya was to take her as a sex slave. No sane woman will marry a man who killed her husband, father and brothers. Mohammed killed safiya's entire family and later 'married' her. If you take this evil character as a prophet or a perfect man, you better change that perception. Mohammed was evil to the core. Further reading https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_views_on_slaveryDid we not show him the two paths? He should choose the difficult path. Which one is the difficult path? The freeing of slaves. Feeding, during the time of hardship... [90:10-14] Righteousness is not turning your faces towards the east or the west. Righteous are those who believe in God, the Last Day, the angels, the scripture, and the prophets; and they give the money, cheerfully, to the relatives, the orphans, the needy, the traveller, the beggars, and to free the slaves... [2:177] The Quran lists the penalty for various misdemeanours as freeing of slaves, see 4:92, 5:89, 58:3. It also implies distribution of community/collective charities would contribute towards freeing of slaves: The charities are to go to the poor, and the needy, and those who work to collect them, and those whose hearts have been united, and to free the slaves, and those in debt, and in the cause of God, and the traveller. A duty from God, and God is Knowledgeable, Wise. [9:60] The only method mentioned in The Quran for gaining captives (more correctly termed 'prisoners of war', not slaves) is during warfare, after which they must be released or ransomed. Keeping them is not an option: Therefore, if you encounter those who deny the truth (in warfare), then bring about the captives until when you have subdued/overcome them, then strengthen the bind. Then after either grace/favour or ransom, until the war lays down its burdens. That, and had God willed, surely He would have gained victory Himself from them, but He tests some of you with others. And those who get killed in the cause of God, He will never let their deeds be put to waste. [47:4] Interestingly, in the above verse, it implies a preference for taking captives rather than killing the enemy in warfare. As can clearly be seen, taking all of the above verses of The Quran into account, it would lead to a gradual reduction in slave numbers and eventually abolish slavery. It's astonishing the level of your hypocrisy that you scout the Qur'an for verses to quote to serve your purpose but couldn't do same to be sure that there aren't verses that encourage freeing slaves even for the sake of the debate. You go about quoting historical events that happen as a result of chain of events. Anyway you are free to think and believe what you like, that won't change the fact that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, and especially in the west. Against all odds. |

true2god: Your lies are getting too embarrassing. Mohammed, your perfect man, bought and sell slaves and he did not abolish slavery.
Mohammed bought safiya, who he killed her husband, kihnana (ibn ishaq pages 414 to 418) from Dhiya in exchange of seven slaves (sunnah ibn majjah vol 3, hadith number 2272). He also slept with safiya after killing her parents in the battle of khaibar.
Mohammed also encouraged taking woman as war booty and sex slaves. Nothing ISIS is currently doing that Mohammed did not do. Nothing! It takes an irrational mind to defend the criminal acts of Mohammed. All his evil acts and instructions are written in black and white, both in the Qur'an and the hadith. Can you please bullet out my lies? |

annunaki2: Your answer was actually very nauseating and your statement that Islam did a lot to minimize slavery made me puke and rile with anger. For God's sake Islam institutionalised and encouraged slavery and till this day slavery is still being practised in some Islamic countries and territories and justified with your sharia laws. Well you can choose whatever you want to believe. But you know slavery predated Islam, so it was already an institution on its own before Islam. If anything Islam discouraged slavery and encouraged emancipation of slaves. That fact you can't deny. Any individual, group or country that still practices slavery have no Islamic justification in doing so. And am not aware of any. |

annunaki2: So how will you classify mohammed's act and that of his companions of sleeping(raping) female slaves? Is that fornication as well or just casual sex What punishment would you recommend for mohammed and his boys for raping female slaves? You shall first of all know the tremendous effort Islam made to minimize slavery. It's the only religion that has freeing of a slave as atornment of sin. Freeing slave was encouraged and admonished as one of the greatest righteous acts. Sometimes the prophet use to gift out slaves to his companions and then tell them to free them so they could get the reward. At that time in history the best thing that could happen to you as a slave is belong to a Muslim! So to do justice to your question you have to look at life from that point in history. A time when slaves in the Christian world were used as entertainment in arenas where they fight to the dead, a freed Muslim slave was becoming a governor of a large Islamic empire. To answer your questions, even at that time the Muslims couldn't have random sex with the slaves, they have to be rightly owned either by purchase or gift. Kind of like a contract in marriage. So its not casual sex it's recognized institution up until it's abolished. |
