We should have now recognized the fact that success in Nigeria doesn't depend on what one studied but the level of connections one has/have. That been said, OP in a developed economy, Met and Mat is the best Engineering profession because Engineers in other fields won't function properly without Met and Mat Engineers (or Materials Engineers).

Met and Mat Engineers ensures that Engineering materials are produced, they ensure produced materials conforms to standards, they also ensure materials do not fail in service. The major classification in Met and Mat Engineering is in two categories namely. Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Engineering.

Metallurgical Engineering deals with metals. It can be classified into Physical Metallurgy, Process (Chemical) Metallurgy and Mechanical Metallurgy. Physical metallurgy bridges the gap between Mechanical and Process Metallurgy.

The courses under physical Metallurgy includes Welding, Crystallography, Corrosion analysis, Phase transformation, phase diagrams (iron-carbon diagram), Foundry, Metallurgical Analysis and Nondestructive Testing, Furnace Technology, Materials Selection, etc.

Courses under Process (Chemical) Metallurgy includes Corrosion Engineering, Iron and steel making, Metallurgical Thermodynamics, Mineral Processing, Non-Ferrous Extractive Metallurgy, Process Design, etc.

Courses under Mechanical Metallurgy includes: Introduction to Mechanical Metallurgy, Mechanical working of metals, Powder Metallurgy, Fundamentals of Materials Testing, etc. It's under this Mech Metallurgy you will best Mechanical Engineers in the utilization of the stress-strain curve for failure analysis and you will further be taught topics on Stress, Strain, Fatigue, Creep failures, etc

Materials Engineering deals with other materials such as polymeric materials (thermoplastics, thermosets and rubbers), Ceramic Materials, Composites, Wood Materials and Biomaterials (for medical applications such as implants).

The bolded are the ones you should try and acquire much practical knowledge in while in school. Try in any way possible to gather much knowledge so that even when you graduate and you don't get job, you can easily set up your own business.

Mind you, concentrate more on welding, nondestructive testing and corrosion analysis if you are looking to get a job easily and/or ply a trade in your field. Welding is the most needed skills in fabrication industries and some oil and gas applications involving construction/production of pressure vessels, pipe joining, etc.

Here is a list of industries that require the services of Metallurgical and Materials Engineers. Iron/Steel industries, Materials testing labs, Powder metallurgy firms, Aluminium industries, polymer production firms, automobile industries, aviation industries, maritime firms that repair/maintain and construct ships and boats, ceramic factories, oil and gas industries, etc. Also, take note that the Military, Airforce and Navy greatly require the services of Metallurgical Engineers due to the fact that they work with many heavy metal equipment.

With all I've said, I want you not to get discouraged but focus on acquiring more practical skills rather than theories because when you possess more practical skills as a metallurgical engineer, you are more sellable than any other engineer. If you have a friend that owns a welding shop, buy your own welding gears and buy electrodes and make sure you learn enough skills in welding because with your skills and qualification you are hot cake. Don't mind people laughing at you in the beginning for they will envy you at the end.

Simple solution. Take the personality test and join your type of introvert group on facebook. Actually join multiple groups, so you can compare your behaviour with other introverts like yourself.

The truth is, once you join these groups, you will start contributing. You are sure to find out that introverts have this weird sense of humor , double or multiple faced and are actually talkative among their kinds.

Soon you will feel comfortable in your disabilities and gradually turn it to strength. But this was what I did when I was your age. I was a bridge burner and also learnt to give them a taste of their own medicine by becoming a better person of value.

Add value to your self and monetize it. Reduce talking to people orally and have them put their request down in writing.

This way, you will be able to say no without looking them in the eye. If you keep up with your likes on closed social media space, you should be able to look them in the eye and say Capital ‘NO’ in a matter of months or a year.

Start exercising. It’s the best way to burn negative energy. Filter people that are using or manipulating you and move away from them without saying a word. It’s the best punishment you can give them.

Then learn from the assistance you render for free.

Let me break this down by giving you a real example. In my second job as a lawyer, I worked in a firm of litigators. We had so much work load and immediately my colleagues knew I don’t say no, they started loading me with their own cases.

I was practically doing the job of 3 people for half the pay of one. Cos I was earning the least pay. But I knew what I was doing. I was simply trying to learn as much as possible and accumulate knowledge within the shortest possible time.

How did this pay me?

I never knew my boss was taking notice of everything. Suddenly, he recommended me to his friend who desperately needed a vast litigator. This friends had juicy bank and multi national briefs but had little or no litigation experience.

That’s how I became head of litigation and managing associate in a tier 2 law firm. Had my own team and gain vast exposure by going against the best of the best and SAN in court. It was scary but I was also learning from them without their knowledge. Atleast you must respond to processes filed by a SAN one way or another.

Soon I became managing associate and was earning both salaries and commission.

When Covid 19 happened, I left the firm and started mine. Guess what?

The first major brief I got was from Nairaland and it paid my entire annual salary in a matter of months. Most of my ex-boss’s client followed me to my new firm and the few that didn’t, still send referrals till date.

Suddenly, God made us a lawyer’s lawyer ( hard core litigators and masters of legal technicalities).

Other lawyers take briefs and we help them do their paperwork for a fee while the go to court and argue their cases.

If you're also competitive, then you may try this little exercise: say NO to basically every request you get, for one week. Don't think about how bad the person will feel or whatever else, just say NO.
It's extreme and quite irrational but it may allow your brain to get its feet a little wet in that department.

Report back after a week to tell us how horribly it went.

Good day Nairalanders,

My name is Covenant Ajolore. A level 300 undergraduate student of Accounting in a Federal university in Nigeria.

My reason for writing is to seek advice as well as see others views as regard my current situation.

It dated back some years ago after the completion of my National diploma, graduated with distinction in accountancy from kaduna polytechnic at age 20. After that I went for my 1 year IT which I did in a bank while simultaneously applying for a DE into the university which I did not get twice(no thanks to unilorin) Two years wasted.

Unfortunately, I decide to change based and opt for a school in the North. given my grade and less competition, I got in and started from level 2 at which I was going to be 23 that year.

With high hopes and enthusiasm I thought I was going to complete my degree at age 25 and then had the chance to start a career in the big 4 (this was part of my plan) and hopefully start ICAN during service. But no thanks to Covid 19, and coupled with the current ASUU strike, it is now evident that it won’t be any way possible, and has thus aggravated my fears and stress level, due to the following effect it has on my plans/goals to be achieved.

1. i won’t be qualified for any graduate trainee job which criteria is a 2.1 and 26 years of age.(I am currently on a 4.40 CGPA and yet to write level 3 first semester exams and I am earnestly working towards graduating with a first class so the 2.1 criterion won’t be a hassle for me but the age factor would be).

2.All my course mate during my National diploma days in the polytechnic that has gone back for there HND are now graduates or currently serving.

Given my current predicaments what would be your next line of action or advice if you were to be in my shoes.

PS: The thought of writing ICAN exam is scaring the shit out of me and also life after school. I don’t know if this is common.

Sometimes,you may find yourself creating valid points after an argument is over.

One Nairalander I was trying to help ran away with my 55k after I sent it to him in December. On the 31st, entering January 1st, 2022, he posted a video of himself with a new phone while smoking weed as he drinks beer with an olosho recording him and smiling.
