Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are in a constant battle to be the best soccer player on the planet.

Both players are unrelenting goal machines who show no mercy when they come face-to-face with opposing defenders and goalkeepers, yet Real Madrid striker Ronaldo and FC Barcelona forward Messi chalk up their goals by utilising different styles.

Ronaldo is an all-round athlete who would likely have excelled in many sports. He has an extraordinary burst of pace, is incredibly strong, and is dominant in the air. Ronaldo is best known for scoring incredible goals from all angles — bullet-like headers from close range, long-distance howitzers, and from dead ball scenarios like free kicks and penalties.

Messi is shorter and less physically imposing than Ronaldo, but has great agility and can seemingly change direction, quickly, at will. He is an expert dribbler of the football, a creative forward, and is lethal in front of goal. Messi is regarded as a soccer magician who casts spells on opponents and beguiles audiences and media alike.

But who is the best?
That is a question that is constantly up for debate, but one area where the case must now be closed is performance in the big games on the grandest of stages.

It was a point recently raised by soccer expert Tom Adams, deputy managing editor at Eurosport, who tweeted that Messi's record in "the biggest competitions compared to Ronaldo's is looking very shoddy."


The stats show the winner is clear
The last time Messi scored a UEFA Champions League goal in the quarterfinal stage or later was in 2015, when he struck twice in his side's 3-0 semifinal win over Bayern Munich. Since then, he has failed to score in the latter stages (quarterfinal or later).

Ronaldo, since Messi's two goals against Bayern that year, has scored 11 quarterfinal goals, three semifinal goals, and two goals in the final.

However, this season alone, Messi has created two goals and scored six in 10 Champions League appearances. This is an attacking efficiency of a goal scored or created once for every 97 minutes he has been on the pitch.

Messi's strike rate in Europe is impressive, yes — but not when you compare him to Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has created three goals and scored 15 in 10 Champions League outings. That's an attacking efficiency of a goal scored or created once for every 50 minutes he has been on the pitch.

In European competition, Ronaldo has been twice as productive as Messi has this season.

There is no argument to be had — when it comes to the latter stages of their careers, it is Ronaldo and Ronaldo alone who has been excelling in the big games on the grandest of stages.

Ronaldo is King

Just last week, Ronaldo's jaw-dropping overhead bicycle kick could see him get crowned with the goal of the season award. It was a highlight-reel strike that required excellent gymnastics, athleticism, bodily coordination, timing, ingenuity, and execution.

The goal, as you can see, is one to remember. But what made it all the more extraordinary was that it was struck in the first leg of Real Madrid's quarterfinal Champions League clash against Juventus. It was the second of two goals he scored that night in Italy to help his club on its way to the Champions League semifinal thanks to a superb 3-0 win.

That whole week, the whole buzz in sports pages across the world was how good Ronaldo was. In the second leg, Real squandered its three goal cushion and allowed Juventus back into the game, but in the closing moments Ronaldo stepped up and broke Juve's hearts by rifling in a penalty kick.

Real won by a 4-3 aggregate score and has its sights on a third successive Champions League title — all because of Ronaldo.

But what about Messi?

Messi messed up on the big stage, as his goals were nowhere to be found when FC Barcelona needed him the most.

Barcelona had beaten AS Roma 4-1 in the first leg of its Champions League quarterfinal match last week. But Roma fought back with an unmatched fury on Tuesday, beating Barca 3-0 on the night and squeaking through to the semis thanks to an away goal victory on a 4-4 aggregate score.

Roma had knocked Barcelona out — but the story would have been so different had Messi managed to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and score. He failed to do so, missed a golden opportunity to score from close range in the 86th minute, and Barcelona got knocked out of the tournament.

Messi is a once-in-a-generation type player and, like Eurosport's editor Adams noted earlier, he may well be "the better player."

But, while Messi fails on the big stage, it is Ronaldo who succeeds — that much is clear.

This might be the last time I will post on this thread. Some are saying those called are on merit, I laugh. Some blame those that wrote on the first day and distributed questions. I wrote on the fourth day been Thursday and I will say categorically that I benefitted from the hints shared here.

I have the said GMAT 2012 edition, a copy I bought years back while preparing for NNPC 2014 exams. I shared pictures of such to over 20candidates via WhatsApp yet only one of them was called for interview, when they all testified they did well in the test.

My test was 3english section and two maths section, which I was very familiar with the questions and answers for the English section. I am very good in maths and as such, DAT section was a bonus. After d test, I went back to d GMAT and calculated my expected score to be 80%+.... Yet my portal is closed. And someone says its on merithuh I weep for Nigeria.

A country were the elites hustle the juicy jobs for their kids and MSc holders weep for not getting the poverty suppression program (Npower) . NNPC is planning for recruitment first quarter of next year, and the slots are already been shared. Take it or leave it. Thank God I have AUST Abuja to keep me busy, while I figure out how to leave this country for good. All these are reasons Nigerians in diaspora will never come back...

Those called for the interview, if u know u don't have any top notch. Pray very well... That's my advice for all.

I wish all Nigerians success in our various career pursuit, and pray we all take that decision to speak out always, and let our voice count. Change begins with You and I.

nice post, I was initially convinced with your point until this thought popped up. is borrowing cheaper than printing in the short term or long term? seeing that a large percentage of our national budget goes in merely servicing our debts from money borrowed taking donkey years to pay up such loans and invariably costing five times the initial borrowed amount.

The young man raised a thought, although it may appear leftist, but it is worthy of consideration. Let us look at it again..... For those claiming borrowed money does not equal inflation but printed money would, how would you explain the same to a toddler if in the end, the economy is getting a boost of equivalent amount of money.....mind you before you rush to answer, in both instance, there are no exchange of goods.

For those saying he doesn't understand elementary economics, haven't it occurred to you that you may be repeating the same thought train that has been ingrained in you, leaving you without the option to think through the challenge in another way?

You see my friends, as much I understand the concept of money both the scientific and sentimental ideas of it, there are also other ways to see through things. The old ways might just have been wrong for so long.

It's not yet uhuru, don't relax yet, the indirect coombs test will have to be repeated monthly because there is still chance of her getting sensitized. There may be need for rhogam at 28 weeks and after birth, so get ready because the drug is expensive.

I think we should get this fact right... Rhogam has no role or benefit in a woman who has been sensitized already.

Rhogam is an antibody given to the rhesus negative woman during pregnancy or after birth or outside pregnancy after being transfused with rhesus positive blood (rarely anyway) in order to mop up the rhesus factor circulating within the woman's blood before they are being recognized as foreign and antibodies produced against them.

If a woman is sensitized, then it means her body has already formed antibodies waiting for the incoming rhesus positive baby to attack, hence rhogam (which is an antibody) cannot fight the already formed antibody because they are similar and cannot antagonize each other. Rhogam only attacks antigens (rhesus factors).

Therefore if she is sensitized, then she does not need rhogam.

Please I'd have a few questions to ask the doctors in the house;

I'm O- while my husband is O+. I lost my first pregnancy with him under some not too palatable circumstance. Now, I'm carrying another baby which is around 30 weeks old. My questions are;

1- How do I ascertain if the antibody has also been secreted in me as a result of my first pregnancy loss?

2- Let's say it has been secreted, what do I do to be sure that this baby I'm carrying wouldn't be hurt. Although she's very fine at the moment. Scan has revealed that it's gonna be a girl and that she's in a perfect state.


3- Let's assume my body didn't secret the antibody that time, will there still be any need for the injection?

PS: Do not blame me for asking too many questions, ever since I read all these I've not been able to swallow ordinary water very well.

However, relax your mind ooo, please! Don't panic! All will be well by God's grace. I would want to advise you to explain everything to your Doctor(s) especially your Rhesus status and that of your husband and your first miscarriage. They are in better position to handle the situation.

Things will be alright by God's special grace. Amen.

Op, pls get your facts right on this topic and don't cause people to panic. If you have been sensitized and you didn't know and the antibodies activated in your blood, once you get pregnant again, you will most likely lose the child but after the loss, Rhogam-D can be taken to deactivate them and you can have a healthy baby later with repeated doses of the injection at 28wks of pregnancy and within 72hrs after delivery. Transfusion of Rh + blood to a Rh - patient is absolutely outside the protocol of Blood transfusion medicine. Even the WHO upholds this.

Rh + blood MUST NEVER be indicated for a Rh - patient regardless of the emergency situation sir.

In the case of a female patient, this would be very devastating. If she survives the TR, she will never be able to have children if she has not hit menopause. Because, she has been sensitized in vivo. Any child conceive will suffer HDN.

However, if the patient is a Rh - post menopausal female and in critical need of transfusion, haven exhausted all options to get Rh - blood, Rh + blood may be given with loads of TR suppressants.

This is not an ideal practice but may be done in a daring emergency situation with the effect clearly explained to family relative(s) who will sign the consent form.

However, the post lacked medical depth and specificity.

NB: Your discuss on Rhesus (Rh) factor is without specificity as to which of the Rhesus factors.

There are 5 Rhesus factors amongst over 50 which are important to us. They are;
1. Rh D
2. Rh C
3. Rh c
4. Rh E
5. Rh e

Op, I believe the very Rhesus factor you have discussed is Rhesus factor D (Rh 'D').

Secondly, inheritance of the Rhesus factor is not solely from the father. The offspring can inherit it from either parents whether (+) or (-)

Let me however make this clarification. A child born to a rhesus negative mother and whose father is rhesus positive must not be rhesus positive as the op pointed out. The child may either be rhesus positive (like the father) or rhesus negative (like the mother).

Again, a rhesus negative woman can actually receive blood from a rhesus positive donor without the compatibility issues that will lead to maternal death as the Op posited. The only thing is to weigh the risk between saving the woman's life or allow her become sensitized. So the fear is for the future pregnancies not on the woman.

However, even in a setting of sensitization, the foetus can be monitored closely and many have been salvaged without dire consequences.

I want to understand the negative outcome. does it means she hasn't develop antibodies or she has already. or does it mean the child is rh-. according to tour right up of a father is rh-+ then the child have to be rH+. please enlighten me a bit more. the doctor in charge of her case have refused to pick call since last week.
