The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has made a passionate appeal to religious leaders, traditional rulers and other prominent Nigerians to prevail on the federal government on the need to implement all the Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) and Memorandum of Agreements (MoAs) entered into with the union in order to avert the looming strike action.

The appeal was made by the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the end of its Congress held yesterday, insisting that unless positive steps were taken, the strike action will resume and even more total than previous ones.

The union also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to be sincere and decisive in his intervention in the crisis in order to salvage what is remaining in the quality of the country’s educational sector.

The ASUU branch chairman, Dr. Ibrahim Inuwa who addressed journalists after their meeting said that, “The Congress, just as it had done in the past three meetings, has given us to inform the national that it is ready to go along in the resuming of the strike action. Enough is enough since the government is not sincere with the Union.”

According to Inuwa, “Since 2009 members of ASUU have remained on the same salary grade level. The agreement is that promotion shall be based on the current exchange rate of the Dollar. You can imagine what we are going through now considering the economic situation.”

The Union lamented that many of its members have not been paid their salaries for as long as 12 months due to the IPPIS which has brought untold hardship to the lecturers.

On the earned allowance, ASUU lamented that the federal government has always reneged on the release which has put the lecturers in a more difficult situation as they tried to perform their duties.

ASUU also berated the federal government for not releasing the N1.5 trillion Universities Revitalization Funds saying that since the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan which released N200b, the present administration only released paltry sums which have not even gone round the public universities.

“While government is paying lip service and dragging feet on the implementation of the MoUs and MoAs, it went ahead to increase students’ charges claiming that the system will collapse if the charges remain what they were. Who is fooling who? The Union lamented.

Inuwa, who was flanked on either side by other leaders of the Union declared that, “It is wrong for anyone to say that ASUU is insensitive to the problem the strike will have on the academic lives of the students. We too are feeling the pain. The situation is just beyond our control.”

On the call by President Buhari on ASUU to rescind its decision to go on strike, ATBU ASUU said that, “Mr. President too should be sincere in implementing the various MoUs and MoAs in order to have stability in the tertiary education sector. We are tired of deceit and empty promises.”

The ATBU branch of the ASUU then declared that its members are fully ready and committed to the resumption of the suspended total strike action by the Union until its demands as contained in all the MoUs and MoAs entered into were met.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in a drastic move on Saturday, approved the appointment of former lawmaker, Muhammad Zorro, as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs and Strategy, Office of the First Lady.

This is as the President temporarily redeployed three aides of the first lady to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement he signed on Saturday titled ‘President Buhari approves Sami Zorro SSA to First Lady, redeployment and disengagement of others’.

At the insistence of the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, the President also approved the immediate redeployment of three of the political appointees in her office to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, pending their assignment to some other government departments or agencies.

Adesina said, “Those affected by the redeployment are: Dr. Mohammed Abdulrahman who was Senior Special Assistant to the President on Health and Development Partners and Personal Physician to the First Lady; Hadi Uba who was Special Assistant to the President on Administration and Wole Aboderin who was Special Assistant to the President on Non-Governmental Organisations, NGOs.

“Also approved with effect from February 11, is the disengagement of Zainab Kazeem, the Special Assistant to the President on Domestic and Social Events, Office of the First Lady.

“Zorro, a famous journalist, brings to the new job decades-long experience in media practice, publishing and unionist leadership.:He was at various times President, Nigeria Union of Journalists, West African Journalists Association and the Federation of African Journalists.

“He was in the House of Representatives where he chaired the committee on Internally Displaced Persons, Refugees and Initiatives on North East.”

Although the reason for the reshuffle remains unknown as of the filing of this report, it comes barely 48 hours after the First Lady was spotted on an evening train returning from Kaduna to Abuja.

The Indigenous People of Biafra has alleged that the Nigerian Army had received a secret instruction to move all Obigbo youths held in the military cell in Kaduna to unknown locations in Northern Nigeria for possible execution.

The group said the over 500 Obigbo youths had been held in different detention facilities under inhuman conditions since two years when they were unlawfully arrested during the infamous Obigbo massacre in 2020.

In a statement on Saturday, the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said IPOB Intelligence unit intercepted secret instruction by the Nigeria Army high command to move the detainees to unknown locations for possible execution and extra-judicial killing.

The group, therefore, cautioned the Army and other federal agencies against secretly executing the innocent youths.

Powerful added that If anything untoward happened to those people arrested illegally, the Army should be held responsible.

The statement reads in part, “We are aware that over 500 innocent Biafrans were unlawfully arrested and abducted by the military and evacuated to different secret cells in Abuja and Kaduna Army cells where they are daily tortured, raped and maltreated as animals because they are Igbos.

“These youths were arrested in Rivers State by the Federal Government and Governor Nyesom Wike, at the heat of the #EndSARS protest because of their hatred against the Igbo Nation in Nigeria.

“With great efforts by our legal teams, some of them were released last year but many are still in custody for two years for committing no crime but being Igbo.

“We, therefore, want to place the world on notice over this wicked plot by the Nigeria Army and its plots to silence these innocent Biafrans without trace. These victims have been detained incommunicado in their custody for two years and they have been ordered to be taken to secret locations in Kaduna.

“It is only the authorities of the Nigeria Army that knows what that order and instruction meant, but any attempt to execute or extra-judicially kill them, they will regret their actions. Such barbarity will be costly and a blunder Nigeria will ever live to regret.

“We also want to remind the army and the Federal Government that we are monitoring them. Should anything untoward happen to these innocent Biafrans, those behind their fate will not escape judgement!

“We demand unconditional release of these youths because they committed no crime and must therefore be released, they have unjustly suffered enough and deserve to be released unconditionally.

“The Obigbo genocide must be remembered in history against Nyesom Wike and Nigeria security agents including the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“The world should not maintain criminal silence when the same federal government that has been freeing Fulani bandits and mass murderers including terrorists rampaging and ravaging Nigeria for the past ten years contine to keep innocent Biafrans in detention under inhuman condition.”

The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Faruq, has justified turbaning of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amechi, as “Dan Amana Daura” (the trusted son of Daura), saying the chieftaincy title was based on merit.

Speaking on Saturday while performing the ceremony at the Royal palace in Daura, Katsina State, the traditional ruler noted that the title was in recognition of the minister’s contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.

He listed parts of the development to include the Transportation University sited in Daura, the Kano-Maradi Standard Gauge Railway line that passed through Daura, among others.

He said, “Daura Emirate does not confer titles on people because of money. The Emirate considers the services rendered to humanity by whoever he wants to honour.

“The Kano – Daura – Katsina rail line which will terminate at Maradi ( The Niger Republic) and the Federal University of Transportation, Daura would bring us benefits in the education of our youths, create employment for our teeming youths and socio-economic development of our community and that of Nigeria.

“It is because of all these that we are honoring him with the title.”

He also commended the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for his leadership qualities, saying the president deserved the support and prayers of every Nigerian.

“My speech is not complete without showing gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari. I call on all Nigerians to continue their support and prayers for the President as he navigates our great country through numerous challenges.

“We pray for Allah’s guidance and protection for him as he pilots our country towards economic revitalisation, progress, and development,” the monarch added

Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, will soon be released from detention by Benin Republic authorities.

Naija News reports that this was made known on Saturday by Abuja-based human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi.

Recall that Sunday Igboho was in July 2021 arrested alongside his wife, Ropo, at an airport in Cotonou while trying to board a plane to Germany.

The secessionist agitator has been in detention after a Benin Republic Court frustrated Nigeria’s government plans to extradite him.

In a post on his Facebook page, Olajengbesi who has since resigned from the team of Nigerian lawyers for Igboho, revealed that the 49-year-old car dealer will be released soon.

He however advised Yoruba leaders to stop being selfish and allow good prevail.

Olajengbesi said: “Chief Sunday Igboho will be out very soon and there will be massive jubilation across the entire Yoruba land.

“He is no doubt a courageous MAN.

“This is very authoritative just that our Yoruba leaders should stop being selfish and allow good to prevail.”

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said that the country is like a football team that needs motivation and confidence.

The former Abia governor in January declared his intention to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 if the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket is zoned to the South.

If the ticket is zoned to the South, Kalu will be contesting the presidency with the likes of APC National leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state and Senator Rochas Okorocha.

In an interview on Friday on Channels Television, Kalu said if elected as the next President, presiding over the affairs of the country will not be a problem because he will stabilise the country.

The former governor added that if elected president, he will change the fortunes of the country just like what he did with Enyimba FC, an Aba-based football club.

The Senator also promised to rebrand the country and give Nigerians the confidence that they need to move forward in life, adding that he can make Nigeria a very big team and a big player in world affairs.

He said: “What I’m going to be getting on the table is the stability of the country; the rebranding of the country and giving Nigerian people that confidence that they are Nigerians and giving them the motivation to move forward.

“Nigeria to me is like a football team and I have done it in the past with the Enyimba football team and I can do it in the future because what every aspect of this country needs is just motivation.

“I know the faults, ups and downs of Nigeria. I can make Nigeria a very big team and a big player in world affairs because when you look at my face, you see the face of Nigeria.”

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has warned that Boko Haram’s menace will be “a child’s play” if the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) is allowed to grow.
He gave the warning when he appeared on the weekly briefing organised by the Presidential Communication Team at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday, Daily Trust reports.

Zulum, who asked the Nigerian Army to re-strategise and defeat ISWAP, said the group posed a threat to the entire nation.

He said ISWAP is building up in Borno through exploiting its closeness to the Sahel.
President Muhammadu Buhari was urged to re-engage external mercenaries for additional support in the battle against terrorism.

Zulum, while speaking on the successes achieved so far in the war against insurgency in the North East, said, “All that I have said now, would never have been feasible without the support of the government. But notwithstanding all the contributions of the federal government, we still have some challenges.

“One, I said it before, a growing number of ISWAP in some parts of the state is a matter of great concern to everybody. In the shores of Lake Chad, again in southern Borno State. Luckily, I was told there was military deployment yesterday to southern Borno state to fight the insurgents in the Tudun Katarangwa area.

“But I think this is an early warning. We shouldn’t allow ISWAP to grow. ISWAP are more sophisticated, more funded and they are more educated. And we shall do everything possible to defeat ISWAP. Otherwise, what Boko Haram did will be a child’s play. This is an early warning that the Nigerian Army has to restrategise and defeat ISWAP.
“ISWAP will be a threat to the entire nation. Because of its proximity to Sub Saharan Africa, they are coming from Libya and others resettling here.”
